From kindergarten-level and up, you’re sure to find books that are attractive to you and that your kids would enjoy too. Junior Paleontologist Activity Book More than 230 national parks are known to preserve fossils (化石) and offer a look into the past. By exploring some of the national parks in this booklet, children can learn about ancient life, as well as completing fun activities. This colorful book introduces kindergarten-aged children to foods from all five food groups of MyPlate, while building literacy skills (读写能力) through the use of sight words, interactive games and activities, and more! The Little Acorn The Little Acorn is written from the eye of a squirrel who buries an acorn near a stream. As it occasionally checks back on the oak nut, the squirrel sees for itself the tree’s growth during the course of seasonal changes. Spring rains, summer heat, and autumn winds condition the baby oak. What starts as a tiny seed in a tough shell finally grows into a “big, beautiful oak tree… dropping little acorns of its own.” Why Would Anyone Cut a Tree Down? This U.S. Forest Service publication teaches kids that “people need to cut some trees down, but that is not the end of the story.” It explores various uses for wood from cut trees—such as materials for construction, nutrients for fresh soil, and stumps for new shoots. The book also includes a note to adults about the basics of tree care. Cutting down a tree is a form of caring for that tree. It makes room for more life in the exchange of another. 1. B Ed Jackson’s team were trying to climb to the top of a Himalayan Mountain. However, weeks after they set off, they were stranded (滞留) there overnight without water, food or tents at a temperature of about -30 ℃. They took turns to keep each other awake in case they fell asleep and did not wake up again. Actually, that night on the mountain top was not the first time that Jackson had been close to death. Five years ago, while still a professional rugby player, Jackson broke his neck in a challenge, which nearly killed him. Jackson was told by doctors that he was likely to face life in a wheelchair. He was forced to retire from playing rugby. Luckily, Jackson managed to discard his wheelchair six months after the accident. To mark the first anniversary of his accident, Jackson set himself the goal of climbing Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, even though he was still using two crutches (拐杖) then. He tried to climb many higher mountains after that. Four years later, he found himself in the Himalayas. The challenges that Jackson faced in the mountains have had a great impact on his recovery both physically and mentally. Jackson realized that others might benefit, too. So he started the charity Millimeters to Mountains (M2M) with his wife Lois and his friend OilyBarkley. It takes beneficiaries (受益人) who have suffered physical or psychological injuries in challenges around the world, allowing them to access the healing power of nature. Jackson says, “I once lost hope in life because of my bad condition, thinking there was nothing I could do. But hopefully what I’m doing, what we’re doing with the charity and what our beneficiaries are proving can give anyone the hope that they can turn their life around, no matter how discouraging it might seem at that moment.” 4. What do the first two paragraphs mainly talk about? A. Jackson was tired of ball games. B. Jackson was respected for his will. C. Jackson was no stranger to suffering in life. D. Jackson was advised to do exercise by his doctors. 5. What does the underlined word “discard” probably mean in the third paragraph? A. Carry through. B. Rely on. C. Tear apart. D. Give up. 6. Why did Jackson start M2M? A. To educate sports lovers. B. To encourage safe mountain climbing. C. To help people with similar experiences. D. To raise money for the physically challenged. 7 What of the following can best describe Jackson? A. Creative and aggressive. B. Adventurous and inspiring. C. Responsible and humorous. D. Enthusiastic and independent. C In late June, the US government allowed two companies to sell lab-grown chicken, which makes the US the second country to approve it. The two companies are called Upside Foods and Good Meat. They are the first companies in the US to be permitted (允许) to sell lab-grown chicken. Lab-grown chicken isn’t created by raising and killing chickens. Experts first choose cells that can grow quickly and will have good flavor from live animals. The cells are grown inside large steel tanks, where they’re fed with everything they need to grow. In a few weeks, the cells grow into clumps (块) or sheets of meat. The companies then form this meat into more familiar shapes so that it can be cooked and sold. The companies say that their chicken is better for the environment. Raising animals for food uses huge amounts of land and water. It also creates a lot of pollution. Raising animals for food creates about 15% of the world’s greenhouse gases. That’s why cutting back on eating meat is one of the easiest ways to fight climate change. Lab-grown chicken can also help in other ways, the companies suggest. For example, raising animals for food is extremely hard on animals. They are often kept in small spaces, and are treated badly. However, many people aren’t too interested in lab-grown chicken. Lots of people believe that “it just sounds odd.” Amy Chen, who works for Upside Foods, says that once people try it, “the most common response we get is, ‘Oh, it tastes like chicken.’” Right now, the chicken is far more expensive than that from animals. Now that the companies have been approved, they have the huge challenge of figuring out how to make much more chicken far more cheaply. For now, the lab-grown chicken will mainly be served in expensive restaurants, and it will probably be a long time before you can buy lab-grown chicken in stores. 8. What does the second paragraph focus on? A. Why lab-grown chicken is made. B. How cell-based chicken is created. C. Which cells will grow into chicken. D. What lab-grown chicken looks like. 9. What is an advantage of lab-grown chicken over traditional farming? A. Reducing resource use. B. Improving animals’ life. C. Lowering meat demand. D. Cutting production costs 10. What are the two companies more likely to do next? A. Start to sell lab-grown chicken in stores. B. Stop serving some expensive restaurants. C. Ask for the US government’s permission. D. Try to reduce the cost of the lab-grown chicken. 11. What can be a suitable title for the text? A The US Permits Lab-Grown Chicken B Lab-Grown Chicken Has More Advantages C. Lab-Grown Chicken Was First Created in the US D. Two Companies Are Buying Lab-Grown Chicken D For as long as there have been gifts, we have naturally made choices based on the personality and tastes of the recipient (接受者). In fact, a recent online survey conducted by psychologists Lauren Human and Lara Aknin confirmed this tendency. However, what if we have been wrong all along and might actually benefit from turning things around? Curious about this possibility, Human and Aknin wondered whether this common approach to giving gifts missed an important way we connect with others. So they sent 78 volunteers into a shopping centre before Mother’s Day. Half were told to buy a card that “reveals (揭示) your knowledge of the recipient” while the others set out to buy a card that “reveals your true self”. After buying the card, the givers who had thought partly of themselves reported feeling emotionally closer to their mothers than those who focused only on the recipient. To find out how that approach went down with recipients, the psychologists did another test, asking more than 100 students to choose a song on iTunes for a friend, partner or family member. Each half of the group received the same instructions as the card buyers. Results revealed that recipients of songs that revealed something of the givers felt more connected than those who received purely recipient-focused gifts. This proved balanced gift-giving builds stronger relationships. Human and Aknin suggest this finding might apply to all gifts. “If building stronger social connections is the underlying (潜在的) goal of a gift — and surely it should be — then we may well be advised to offer more self-expressive gifts.” In short, for a present to be truly meaningful, you need to give away a bit of yourself, even if there is a risk that the gift might not fully meet the recipient’s practical needs or tastes. But a note of warning here: what the research does not examine is the potential risk in repeated, thoughtless giver-centered giving, which, according to Human and Aknin “could signal selfishness” — and nobody wants to reveal that about themselves. 12. What is learned from the Mother’s Day card test? A. Many pick gifts with the recipient in mind. B. Many choose gifts based on their own tastes. C. Gifts considering the giver benefit the giver. D. Gifts revealing the recipient affect the giver. 13. Why should we give gifts according to the text? A. To make the giver’s life happier. B. To meet the recipient’s practical needs. C. To show knowledge of the recipient. D. To establish stronger social connections. 14. How do the researchers view self-expression in gift-giving? A. Positive. B. Neutral. C. Critical. D. Uncaring. 15. What’s the purpose of the text? A. To suggest better ways of gift giving. B. To show how gifts build relationships. C. To stress the importance of gift knowledge. D. To discuss common gift-buying mistakes. Looking for a way to connect with nature but you’re not sure how to when you live in the city? James Dotson was laboring in his garden when a loud, painful cry came from the woods behind his home. Realizing something wrong must have happened, he rushed towards the woods quickly. Soon he found an injured baby deer lying in a pit (深坑), one of his skinny legs bleeding. So weak was the little deer that it didn’t have the strength to move when Dotson approached. He squatted (蹲下) and stretched out his hands to the deer with great care and pulled it up. As he carried the little deer towards their home, his daughter Maggie rushed outside and greeted her father with great excitement. “Wow, a deer! What happened to him, Daddy?” asked Maggie. “Well, the poor deer’ left leg is hurt badly.” Mr. Dotson said gently while walking into the sitting room. Maggie followed her father to take a better look. “Poor little deer. Can we keep him, Daddy? And I will call him Paxton.” “That’s a fine name for a deer, Maggie. We’ll do everything we can to help him,” smiled Mr. Dotson. “But we can’t keep him. He’s a wild animal.” After Mr. Dotson carefully placed the little deer on the floor, he asked Maggie to go to the kitchen and get his medical bag. The little deer was in luck. He was being attended to by James Dotson, the local Veterinarian. In a flash, Maggie rushed outside carrying his medical bag and a small carrot she had grabbed from the refrigerator. Maggie handed her father the bag and then placed the carrot by Paxton’s mouth, but the poor creature wasn’t interested. 7. What of the following can best describe Jackson? A. Creative and aggressive. B. Adventurous and inspiring. C. Responsible and humorous. D. Enthusiastic and independent. C 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第一段中的“However, weeks after they set off, they were stranded (滞留) there overnight without water, food or tents at a temperature of about -30 ℃(然而,在他们出发几周后,他们在零下30摄氏度左右的环境中,没有水、食物和帐篷,在那里滞留了一夜)”以及第二段中的“Five years ago, while still a professional rugby player, Jackson broke his neck in a challenge, which nearly killed him.(五年前,当时还是职业橄榄球运动员的杰克逊在一次比赛中摔断了脖子,差点丧命)”可知,杰克逊曾遭遇登山滞留险境和运动重伤濒死这两次磨难,说明他对生活中的苦难并不陌生。 画线词前所在的下一句“To mark the first anniversary of his accident, Jackson set himself the goal of climbing Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, even though he was still using two crutches (拐杖) then. (为了纪念他的事故一周年,Jackson给自己定下了攀登威尔士最高的山峰斯诺登山的目标,尽管当时他还拄着两根拐杖)”可知,Jackson不需再使用轮椅了,故划线词所在句意思是“幸运的是,Jackson在事故发生六个月后设法丢弃了他的轮椅。”所以划线词discard意为“抛弃”,与动词短语give up同义。故选D项。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Jackson realized that others might benefit, too. So he started the charity Millimeters to Mountains (M2M) with his wife Lois and his friend OilyBarkley. It takes beneficiaries (受益人) who have suffered physical or psychological injuries in challenges around the world (杰克逊意识到其他人也可能从中受益。于是,他与妻子洛伊丝和朋友奥利・巴克利共同创办了慈善组织 “毫米登山”。该组织的帮扶对象是那些在全球各地的挑战中遭受过身体或心理创伤的人) 可知,杰克逊创办这个慈善组织是为了帮助和他有相似受伤经历的人。故选C项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“He tried to climb many higher mountains after that. Four years later, he found himself in the Himalayas.(从那以后,他尝试攀登更多更高的山峰。四年后,他登上了喜马拉雅山脉)”可知,杰克逊热爱冒险;及最后一段“ Jackson says, “I once lost hope in life because of my bad condition, thinking there was nothing I could do. But hopefully what I’m doing, what we’re doing with the charity and what our beneficiaries are proving can give anyone the hope that they can turn their life around, no matter how discouraging it might seem at that moment.”(杰克逊说:“我曾经因为身体状况不好而对生活失去希望,觉得自己无能为力。但希望我所做的,我们与慈善机构所做的,以及我们的受益者所证明的,可以给任何人带来希望,让他们能够改变自己的生活,不管那一刻看起来多么令人沮丧。”)”可知,他是一个鼓舞人心的人。故选B项。 C In late June, the US government allowed two companies to sell lab-grown chicken, which makes the US the second country to approve it. A. The US Permits Lab-Grown Chicken B. Lab-Grown Chicken Has More Advantages C. Lab-Grown Chicken Was First Created in the US D. Two Companies Are Buying Lab-Grown Chicken 【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了美国政府批准两家公司销售实验室培育的鸡肉,介绍了这种鸡肉的制造过程、优点以及面临的挑战和未来的市场前景。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Lab-grown chicken isn’t created by raising and killing chickens. Experts first choose cells that can grow quickly and will have good flavor from live animals. The cells are grown inside large steel tanks, where they’re fed with everything they need to grow. In a few weeks, the cells grow into clumps (块) or sheets of meat. The companies then form this meat into more familiar shapes so that it can be cooked and sold.(实验室培育的鸡肉不是通过饲养和宰杀鸡来生产的。专家们首先从活体动物中选择能够快速生长且味道好的细胞。这些细胞在大型钢罐中生长,在那里它们被喂以生长所需的一切。几周后,这些细胞就会长成块状或片状的肉。然后,这些公司将这种肉塑造成更熟悉的形状,以便烹饪和销售)”可知,第二段主要介绍了实验室培育的鸡肉是如何制造的。故选B项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“The companies say that their chicken is better for the environment. Raising animals for food uses huge amounts of land and water. It also creates a lot of pollution. Raising animals for food creates about 15% of the world’s greenhouse gases.(这些公司表示,他们的鸡肉对环境更有利。饲养动物作为食物需要大量的土地和水。它还会产生大量污染。饲养动物作为食物产生的温室气体约占全球的15%)”可知,实验室培育的鸡肉与传统农业相比的优势是减少资源的使用。故选A项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Right now, the chicken is far more expensive than that from animals. Now that the companies have been approved, they have the huge challenge of figuring out how to make much more chicken far more cheaply.(目前,这种鸡肉比动物身上的鸡肉要贵得多。既然这些公司已经获得了批准,它们就面临着如何以更低的成本生产更多鸡肉的巨大挑战)”可知,这两家公司接下来最有可能尝试降低实验室培育的鸡肉的成本。故选D项。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,文章开篇“In late June, the US government allowed two companies to sell lab-grown chicken, which makes the US the second country to approve it. The two companies are called Upside Foods and Good Meat. They are the first companies in the US to be permitted (允许) to sell lab-grown chicken.(6月下旬,美国政府允许两家公司销售实验室培育的鸡肉,这使美国成为第二个批准销售实验室培育鸡肉的国家。这两家公司分别叫Upside Foods和Good Meat。他们是美国第一家被允许销售实验室培育鸡肉的公司)”点明核心事件,随后介绍其制作、优点和挑战,全文均围绕“美国批准实验室培育鸡肉”这一新闻事件展开知,故A选项“The US Permits Lab-Grown Chicken”能概括文章主旨,最适合作文章标题。故选A项。 D For as long as there have been gifts, we have naturally made choices based on the personality and tastes of the recipient (接受者). 【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一项心理学研究,该研究通过实验发现,在送礼时适当表达自我(而非只关注收礼人)有助于增强双方的情感连接。文章在肯定这种“平衡式”送礼方式的同时,也提醒了其潜在风险。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“So they sent 78 volunteers into a shopping centre before Mother’s Day. Half were told to buy a card that “reveals (揭示) your knowledge of the recipient” while the others set out to buy a card that “reveals your true self”. After buying the card, the givers who had thought partly of themselves reported feeling emotionally closer to their mothers than those who focused only on the recipient. 根据第四段中“If building stronger social connections is the underlying (潜在的) goal of a gift — and surely it should be — then we may well be advised to offer more self-expressive gifts. (如果建立更强的社会联系是礼物的潜在目标——而且它确实应该是——那么我们很可能会被建议提供更多表达自我的礼物)”可知,送礼物的潜在目标应该是建立更强的社会联系。故选D项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“Human and Aknin suggest this finding might apply to all gifts. (Human和Aknin认为这一发现可能适用于所有礼物。“如果建立更强的社会联系是礼物的潜在目标——而且它确实应该是——那么我们很可能会被建议提供更多表达自我的礼物。”简而言之,要让礼物真正有意义,你需要付出一点自我,即使这或许意味着礼物可能无法完全符合收礼人的实际需求或品味)”可知,研究人员认为送礼时自我表达可以建立更强的社会联系,使礼物更有意义,所以他们对自我表达持积极态度。故选A项。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文,结合第一段中“However, what if we have been wrong all along and might actually benefit from turning things around? (然而,如果我们一直以来做法都是错误的,而实际上从扭转局面中获益呢?)”和第四段中“Human and Aknin suggest this finding might apply to all gifts. “If building stronger social connections is the underlying (潜在的) goal of a gift — and surely it should be — then we may well be advised to offer more self-expressive gifts.” (Human和Aknin认为这一发现可能适用于所有礼物。“如果建立更强的社会联系是礼物的潜在目标——而且它确实应该是——那么我们很可能会被建议提供更多表达自我的礼物”)”可知,文章主要讨论了送礼时考虑自我表达可能比单纯考虑接受者更能增进双方关系,并引用了心理学家的实验结果来支持这一观点,所以文章目的是为读者提供更好的送礼方式建议。故选A项。 第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Looking for a way to connect with nature but you’re not sure how to when you live in the city? (运用了who引导的定语从句) 第二节(满分25分) 47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 It was a sunny day. It was so unsettled, hardly able to eat anything and had such an air of sadness on its face. Maggie was worried and sad. However, her father convinced her that Paxton would be ok. 注意:(1)续写词数应为150左右; (2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: Paxton was taken good care of in their home. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Now it was time to send Paxton to where it belonged—nature. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Paxton was taken good care of in their home. Mr. Dotson attended to Paxton’s injured leg. Maggie never left home without feeding him first thing every morning. With time and effort, not only did the deer get his strength back, but he began to eat carrots right out of Maggie’s hand. Everything went on well until Mr. Dotson said it was time to set Paxton free. Maggie shook her head and refused. Patting her gently on the head Mr. Dotson said, “Paxton needs to be with his parents, just like you. You love Paxton and wish him happy, right?” Maggie seemingly understood and nodded her head. Now it was time to send Paxton to where it belonged—nature. Paxton walked into the woods with Mr. Dotson and Maggie, running and jumping. Maggie kissed Paxton, “It’s time for you to reunite with your parents. I will miss you, Paxton.” Away ran Paxton quickly. Maggie couldn’t help crying. Suddenly, she found Paxton stopped in his tracks and looked back at her as if trying to convey deep, unspoken gratitude. After a few seconds, he disappeared into the woods. Bathed in the golden sunlight, and hugged tightly by her father, Maggie finally understood the true meaning of love. 词汇激活 行为类 ①照顾:attend to/take care of ②拒绝:refuse/reject ③消失:disappear/vanish 情绪类 ①高兴:happy/delighted ②感激:gratitude/thankfulness 【点睛】[高分句型1] With time and effort, not only did the deer get his strength back, but he began to eat carrots right out of Maggie’s hand. (运用了部分倒装句) [高分句型2] Everything went on well until Mr. Dotson said it was time to set Paxton free. (由until引导的时间状语从句和that引导的宾语从句,省略了that) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
