Last summer I went to one of the world’s most famous historical places, the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. It was the home of the emperors (皇帝) of the last two dynasties in China. the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
The Forbidden City was built in 1420. The palace has over 10,000 rooms. It was where the emperors dealt with the official business with their ministers.
In Mandarin (普通话), the Forbidden City is called the Purple Forbidden City. However, the color of the palace itself is not purple. The color purple means the great emperors of China have powerful right. It was so sacred (神圣的) that the commoners could not even dream of ever going in.
The emperor also had some of the largest festival celebrations at the Forbidden City. During Chinese New Year, the emperor would invite all the members of his family and his officials to a banquet. The banquet had a hundred and eight Chinese dishes. It was such an expensive banquet that it could feed a commoner’s family for three generations (代).

“Why do I live? Why do I wish for anything, or do anything? Is there anything in my life that will not be destroyed (破坏) by my death?” Like Leo Tolstoy, the famous Russian writer, many people ask these difficult questions. Tolstoy spent his whole life trying to answer these difficult questions.
As a young man, he thought people could be perfect if they tried hard enough. So he worked very hard to be the best in everything. He thought that he would find meaning and truth in success.
In the 1850s, Tolstoy wrote his first stories. He wrote about his life in the army. He also told stories about his childhood. These works were published and Tolstoy became well-known.
He got the respect he always wanted. Many rich and smart men met and talked with Tolstoy. They talked a lot about faith (信仰) and the meaning of life. But soon Tolstoy recognized that these men were not perfect. Now he knew they could not answer his questions about faith.
So in the 1860s, Tolstoy tried a different way to find the meaning of life. He opened a school for the children of his serfs—the people who worked on his land. These workers were very poor. He wanted to help them because he thought they were more honest than the rich people he knew.
Tolstoy learned a lot from his workers. He understood how they worked hard to support their families. He began to believe that marriage and family would give his life meaning. So in 1862, Leo Tolstoy married a young woman named Sonya Behrs.
The next 15 years were the best years of Tolstoy’s life. It was during this time that he wrote his most famous books—War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Many experts say that War and Peace is one of the greatest books ever written. In these books, Tolstoy believed humans should live a simple life and take care of their families. Tolstoy thought this would satisfy (使……满足) him and bring him happiness.
Leo Tolstoy is still liked by many people today. His faith and writings have influenced many people all over the world.

Right now the Forbidden City is known as a historical site for tourists from all over the world. Everyone can go in there. It is a museum with priceless Chinese antiques (古董) and treasures in it. I really learned a lot about the Chinese culture and its history from this trip to the Forbidden City. It was like a dream come true to go on the trip and see the things that I had always wanted to see.

②DeepSeek came from High-Flyer, a Chinese hedge fund (对冲基金) . At first, High-Flyer used AI for stock (股票) trading. But its bosses thought AI could do more. So, they started DeepSeek a few years ago. Unlike many tech companies, DcepSeek didn’t make products right away. It put the money from stock trading into research (研究).

⑦In short, the rise (崛起) of DeepSeek shows us that if we have special ideas, are not afraid of difficulties, and work hard on research, we can be successful in the tech world.
