People are once again impressed by a recent science fiction movie. In the movie, people on a desert planet wear special suits that turn sweat (汗水) into clean drinking water. Sounds like magic? In fact, in some water-short places on Earth, people recycle waste water in similar ways. Even astronauts in space recycle their water!
You might think, “We have plenty of water on Earth.” But actually, clean water is limited. Some countries are developing better ways to save water. In Germany, there’s an amazing waste water reuse system. This new system separates waste water into different types.
—Rainwater is collected to water the gardens.
—“Gray water” from kitchen and bathroom sinks is used to flush toilets.
—“Black water” from toilets is sent to a local factory to be turned into biogas (沼气).
The purpose of the system is not only to reduce water use but also to provide power for local people.
Perhaps more countries can follow this example. The challenge lies with old houses. Using these new systems in old buildings costs a lot. However, people once thought LED lights were expensive too. Now they’re everywhere. This time, we can make similar changes to save water.
Remember, every drop counts! By using water wisely today. We can make sure there’s enough clean water for everyone tomorrow.
回答下面5个问题,每题答案不超过6个词。
1.What do people wear to get clean drinking water in the movie?
2.How many types of waste water are reused in the new system?
3.What is one of the purposes of the new system in Germany?
4.Why is it a challenge to fix new systems in old buildings?
5.What does the writer advise us to do in the last paragraph?
I’m Patrick McCarthy, and you can call me Pat. This is the space where I can help you with your daily life problems. Go ahead and ask away!
Dear Patrick, Every time I look through my phone, I see someone having the time of their life. When I miss out on something fun or important that my friends are experiencing, I feel worried. How can I avoid this?Sarah
Hi! Sarah,This is a big reason why so many people worry about social media’s influence on teenagers. Feeling worried and lonely as a result of looking through your phone is quite normal, even if it is unhealthy.
Quite a lot of people post their pictures or videos on social media. Most of them share the best parts of their lives. You must keep in mind that they do so to share good feelings with others. It’s hard to find people sharing their bad moments, like feeling stressed about their home life or shame after failing a test.
If seeing these videos and photos still causes bad feelings, stop connecting for a while. Do something that makes you pleased and relaxed. Try to read or spend some time with your family. You don’t need to impress anyone else.
Pat

Imagine you are walking through deep snow. As you walk, you leave footprints where you’ve been. That’s what happens when using technology, such as computers, mobile phones and tablets. You leave your digital footprint and it will never disappear.
Here are reasons why your digital footprint should matter to you.
How people see you
Of course, you have nothing to hide, but if people get information about you, they might judge you from the information you have left online. For example, you make a bad joke online. Years later, it’s found by the university you are applying to, and they don’t think it’s funny. Maybe they decide you are not the “right” kind of person for them,
Your private information
Not everything can be shared with everyone. For example, you might share your school reports with your parents, but keep them secret to your e-friends. If you share them on the Internet, they will not be a secret anymore. Therefore, to protect your privacy(隐私), remember to put out less information online.
Keeping your money safe
There are plenty of people looking at information about you, and some of them want to steal from you. So you shouldn’t write bank details, card numbers or passwords in emails or text messages.
Overall, the message is: No one can go online without leaving his digital footprint—but with care, you can control it.
回答下面5个问题,每题答案不超过6个词。
1.When do you leave digital footprint?
2.How many reasons are mentioned in the passage?
3.What should you do to protect your privacy?
4.What shouldn’t be written in emails or text messages?
5.How can you go online safely?

On May 10, 2025, the Jiangsu Football City League started at Zhenjiang Sports and Exhibition Center. It is a provincial amateur (业余) football competition, but it became very popular in China quickly. After only four rounds, more than 190,000 people watched the games in person. Online, hundreds of millions of people watched them too, according to Xinhua.
The league, also called “Su Super League”, runs from May to November. There are 13 teams, each from a different city in Jiangsu. First, all 13 teams play against each other once. Then the top 8 teams move to the knockout stage. They play to decide the top 4 teams, and finally the champion.
One big reason for the league’s success is that many common people can join. There are 516 players in all. Over 65% of them have different jobs—like college students, teachers, and delivery workers. Liu Tong, from Jiangsu Sports Bureau, said, “This is a new way to do basic-level soccer. It makes the game closer to people.” The league is also popular because of its fun cultural vibe (气氛). Teams are named after local favourites: Yancheng is known for Milu deers, and Nanjing for its tasty salted duck. Soccer commentator (评论员) Xu Yifan said, “The league’s soccer shows that if we focus on local culture; let more people join in and have good times, community soccer can really work.” Since the league began, slogans like “match comes first, friendship fourteenth” have been popular online. They show the competition between Jiangsu’s 13 cities. All 13 cities are in China’s top 100 for GDP. People call their competitions “thirteen brothers”. A Nanjing soccer fan said, “We compete hard but we are like family!”

In Tongren city, Guizhou Province, there is a special embroidery called leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉刺绣). This type of embroidery began in the Song Dynasty. It was used for communication among different ethnic groups in southwestern China.
Making leaf-vein embroidery is not easy. It takes a lot of steps, including choosing the right leaves, drying them, creating the designs and embroidering. Yang Li, a master of this craft, mentioned that in the last ten years, only about 20 people could complete the whole process by themselves.Because of the long, hard work, passing on the traditional craft faces challenges. “I have introduced this art to universities, communities and villages, but very few people have continued to do it,” Yang said. “I feel a duty. In my lifetime, I must pass on leaf-vein embroidery.” she said.
In 2022, Yang set up the Guizhou embroidery intangible cultural heritage base (黔绣非物质文化遗产基地) and started to share traditional skills of leaf-vein embroidery by making short videos online. “Leaf-vein embroidery is a treasure. I hope more young people will return to their hometowns to continue its legacy.” Yang said.

Chinese science scored big again! Du Mengran, a geoscientist (地质学家), and Liang Wenfeng, the founder of DeepSeek, have been successfully selected (获选) for Nature in 2025. Together with eight other outstanding people from around the world, they won the honour because they have made many excellent achievements that have pushed for the development of global science this year.
Du was selected for her excellent achievements in exploring the deep-sea world. In the submersible (潜水器) Fendouzhe, her team dived down to over nine kilometers more than 20 times. In the dark deep-sea environment, the team discovered the deepest-known animal ecosystem which is completely new to science on Earth for the first time. When facing the unknown, the best way to do is to go and see for yourself, she says. Her words have become an encouraging motto for many researchers.
Liang was selected for his contribution to developing new AI models. His company, DeepSeek, released (发布) its powerful and affordable AI model early this year. As soon as the model was released, it shocked the global technology community as it’s equal to the best US model including ChatGPT. It showed that the United States was not as far ahead in the AI field as many people had ever thought.
“Nature’s 10” is a yearly list of ten people who made huge contributions to science. It’s not a prize or ranking (排名) but a selection of important stories in science over the past year. It allows others to see these great people who are working hard to help us understand the world. It also encourages more young people to follow their dreams in science.

You may know about “junk food” like French fries. But do you know about “junk sleep”?
A British survey shows that there are many electronic products in teenagers’ bedrooms. They are influencing teenagers’ sleep badly.
The survey was done among 1,000 British kids from 12 to 16. It is found that 50% of them got just 4 to 7 hours’ sleep every day. But doctors say they need 8 to 9 hours.
Almost 25% of the kids said they often fell asleep while they were watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic products.
“The results are very worrying,” said Dr. Chris, a British professor, “We call it ‘junk sleep’. It means you don’t get enough sleep and the quality of the sleep is low, too.” The survey found that quite a few of the kids felt tired each day because of the junk sleep, especially girls between 13 and 16. Nearly all the teenagers have a phone, music player or TV in their bedrooms. And lots of them even have all the three.
Dr. Chris suggested that parents should help their children keep away from electronic products, and that teenagers should spend less time on phones.

As a beginner, instead of feeling nervous or scared, Zhao thought it a chance to prove himself. Every shot, every move, made the audience’s hearts beat faster than usual: Zhao focused hard on the table, aiming at the colorful balls and hitting them with his stick carefully. In the end, Zhao won with a total score of 18-12, becoming a national hero in China. As Ding Junhui said, “Tonight’s starlight belongs to all Chinese fans who have been waiting for this moment!” The sport’s chairman, Jason Ferguson, said, “Since he is young and talented, Zhao will take snooker to another level.” This victory not only ended China’s 20-year wait for a championship in this sport but also helped an Asian player reach the top position in the sport for the first time.

The seed vault (种子地窖)
A lot of countries need different kinds of seeds so that they can plant them again. There is an important reason for this. Sometimes plants can’t grow in a country because of bad weather or disease, so farmers need new seeds.
You can keep seeds in a “seed vault”. It’s a place at a special temperature. The seeds don’t grow, but they can live for a long time. Norway has the biggest seed vault in the world — the Svalbard Global Seed Vault and it has seeds from a lot of different countries.
The vault is on the island of Spitsbergen. The island is about one thousand kilometers from the North Pole. It’s a very cold place so it’s good for seeds. Above the ground, the doorway is small, but inside, the building is huge. You walk down a long corridor (走廊), which is one hundred and thirty meters inside a mountain. At the end of it, there are three large areas with seeds.
There are about half a million kinds of seeds inside the vault. For example, there are kinds of seeds for rice from Asia and Africa, 32 kinds of seeds for potatoes from Ireland and seeds for different tomatoes from the USA.The seed vault has space for a lot more seeds. You can put about 2.2 billion seeds inside.
The seeds can live here for thousands of years because of the cold temperature of-18℃. So in the future, humans can grow any seed they want. In other words, the seed vault is the difference between life and death.

On Sept 1, Yao Miao made history as the first Chinese woman to win the 50-kilometer race at the famous Utra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB, 环勃朗峰超级越野耐力赛). This adds to her earlier success in 2018, when she became the first Chinese woman to win the 100-km race at the UTMB.
The UTMB is one of the world’s most well-known trail running events, taking place every year in the beautiful Mont-Blanc area, covering parts of France, Italy, and Switzerland. This year, Yao completed a 57-km course with a top elevation (海拔) of 3,500 meters. “I started off a bit slow, but after 20km. I felt stronger, especially on the downhills. During trail running, finding the right pace is like solving a math problem—you must plan carefully for long distances,” Yao explained. She kept a steady rhythm on flat paths and saved energy for steep climbs.
Her love for running began in her childhood in the countryside of Guizhou. Her school was four kilometers from home, and she walked the distance four times a day. Growing up in the mountains gave her a toughness (韧性) that later helped her as a runner. At 16, she joined her city’s sports school, starting her formal training. In 2019, Yao was recommended to join the Hubei provincial team as a professional marathon runner. She was later accepted into the sports department of Central China Normal University in 2020. To balance professional training with her studies, Yao trains in Yunnan, running about 30 kilometers a day, and in her free time, she takes online courses there. Lacquer fans are amazing fans from China, and their history dates back to the Han Dynasty. Later, lacquer fans became one of the top collections in the art world during the Tang Dynasty.
Lacquer is a natural material taken from the lacquer tree. It was first used to coat wooden objects to protect them from water and insects. Over time, workers began to use lacquer to make and decorate fans.
Lacquer fans are made with bamboo or wooden frames (框架). Traditionally, they are painted with different subjects and patterns (图案) such as flowers, birds, and figures (人物), to make them more beautiful. Although the methods of making fans continue to develop, skilled workers still use traditional skills to create lacquer fans, keeping this ancient art form alive.
Nowadays, lacquer fan painting is one of the most popular activities among young people, which is considered a new form of expression of lacquer art. Instead of using traditional tools such as brushes, lacquer fan painting is done only by the lacquer and water. The process is quite simple: people first choose the colors they want to use, drop the colored lacquer into the water, mix it, put the fans in the water for a while, and then take them out. And that’s it.
Making each fan is like opening a blind box, as no one can know how the product will be like before it turns out. So every fan is special.
For centuries, lacquer fans have been loved for their beauty. And they are becoming increasingly popular among young people nowadays.
根据短文内容回答下列问题(每题答案不超过6个单词)。
1.What was lacquer first used to do?
2.What are lacquer fans made with?
3.How do the workers keep this ancient art form alive?
4.What is considered as a new form of expression of lacquer art?
5.What can you learn about lacquer fans?
Thanks to China’s new visa-free transit policy (免签过境政策), American YouTube star IShowSpeed, famously nicknamed “Jiakang Ge”, visited Dengfeng, Central China’s Henan Province, to learn Shaolin kung fu. His training video, which showed his teacher Liang Xiaolong, became popular online immediately. Liang, a modest kung fu coach at the Henan Provincial Shaolin Wushu Center, won high praise from viewers for his kindness and skills.
Liang, born into a martial arts family in 1987, started learning kung fu at the age of 11. He teaches both foreigners and locals at the center, which develops Shaolin culture and tourism. During the lesson, IShowSpeed learned basic moves like the “five-step fist” and tried Sanda skills, a mix of traditional kung fu and modern fighting. Liang later mentioned that Speed impressed him deeply with his bravery and quick learning, mastering most of the routine after just two tries.
One unforgettable moment came when IShowSpeed volunteered to try Hard Qigong, a skill where a person is hit with a stick. Though IShowSpeed clearly felt pain, Liang encouraged him by explaining that pain was part of kung fu training and life itself. Many viewers found these words inspiring.
Liang shared his belief that kung fu helps people connect even without shared languages. He described kungfu as a bridge connecting martial arts lovers across cultures (跨文化). Despite getting attention from IShowSpeed’s video, Liang remained modest, saying that his goal was to continue teaching Shaolin traditions developing cultural exchanges. And this event also shows how kung fu can bring people from different cultures together.

Liang later mentioned that Speed impressed him deeply with his bravery and quick learning, mastering most of the routine after just two tries.
