Four children survived alone in Colombia’s Amazon rainforest for 40 days. On May 1, their small airplane went down. However, the children tried to survive for over a month in the forest before being saved.
The children’s travel began when they were flying with their mother. Their small plane had problems and crashed (坠毁) in the rainforest. All three adults on the plane died. At first, the children ate flour (面粉). They found it on the airplane. When the flour ran out, the children used their knowledge of the forest’s fruits to survive. Luckily, it was a time when many rainforest plants were growing fruit.
As soon as the plane crashed, people started searching to see if anyone survived. After two weeks, the plane was found. The people searching found signs of the children—a bottle, a partly-eaten piece of fruit, and even a cover made by the children.

①Water is important for all living things on Earth. The water cycle (循环) takes water from the ground and the sky and brings it back to the Earth again. It is a cycle that happens the whole year and is most active from March to June in China.
②The water cycle always begins with water vapor (水蒸气). When it’s hot outside, you can see clouds forming in the sky. These clouds are made of water vapor that comes from the ground, plants and rivers. As water vapor rises into the sky, it cools down and becomes clouds. After that, clouds travel through the sky and fall back to Earth as rain or snow. Then, water runs through rivers and oceans and finally returns to the earth again in different forms like rainwater or snow.
③The water cycle is important in protecting our Earth’s climate. It provides us with water to drink and keeps our climate healthy. Moreover, it takes water from rivers and oceans and brings it to the areas that don’t have enough water. ________ When there is too much water in one place, it becomes a flood. When water is badly needed, it results in a drought (干旱). Besides, water vapor can take heat from the sun and keep our Earth cool.
④Understanding the water cycle can help us enjoy the beauty of nature, know how our Earth works and find better ways to protect our Earth and that is our duty.
38. What is the main purpose of the water cycle?
A. To change water into vapour and clouds. B. To protect Earth’s climate and support life.

Milu has been back in China for 40 years. For many years, they were known as “Pere David’s deer”. The Frenchman Pere David saw it in Beijing for the first time in 1865 and introduced it to Europe. However, it is now widely called the milu deer, showing respect for its Chinese origin (起源) and China’s protection for them.
The milu is also called “sibuxiang” in Chinese, which means “like none of the four” because of their special appearance—a horse-like face, a donkey-like tail, cow-like hooves (蹄子) and stag-like antlers (雄鹿一样的角). These animals are native to China and are described in many ancient Chinese books.
However, the number of milu in China dropped because of climate change and human activities. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, there were only a few hundred left. They were kept in a park in Beijing. In 1894, a flood from the Yongding River broke the walls of the park, and some milu ran away and died. In 1900, the last of the milu died or were taken away during the war.
In 1985, China brought 22 milu deer from the UK back to Beijing. This started a successful effort to increase their numbers in China. Since then, the number of milu has grown a lot, with over 15,000 now across the country.

Tom, Huck and Joe decided to run away from the town and become pirates (海盗), never to return. They left at midnight on a raft (筏) and finally landed on an island five kilometers south of their town. They took the old sail from the raft and made a tent. Then they let the raft go down the river.
They built a fire and cooked some stolen food to eat talking about the life of pirates.
Slowly, they felt sleepy. Huck slept easily. Tom and Joe had more difficulty getting to sleep. Their consciences (良心) started to work. They began to fear that it was wrong to run away and worried that it was bad to steal.
After they woke up the next morning, they played in the shallow, clear water. Then they caught some small fish and cooked these for breakfast.
Later they went to explore the woods. When they got hungry, they went back to their camp, ate lots of cold ham, and then lay down in the shade to talk. They thought the new life was free and interesting.
Suddenly, the boys heard a strange noise in the distance. Soon this sound became louder.
“What is it?” asked Joe.
“It isn’t thunder,” said Huck. “Let’s go and see.”
They hurried to the shore (岸). A little ferry (渡船) full of people was about a kilometer below the village. There were lots of rowing boats moving around near the ferry. The boys couldn’t understand what they were doing. Some white steam (蒸汽) came from the ferry’s side and they heard that same sound again.
“I know,” cried Tom. “Someone’s drowned (溺死)! They are searching for the dead body.”
“That’s it,” said Huck. “They did this last summer when Bill Turner drowned. They send out some white steam over the water and that makes the body come to the top.”

This left the four children alone in the forest. The oldest child was a 13-year-old girl. Next came a 9-year-old, a 4-year-old, and an 11-month-old baby.
Over 150 soldiers (士兵) were sent out with dogs to search on the ground. After more than a month, the soldiers finally found the children in a small open area, about 5 kilometers from where the plane crashed. The children were very weak, but they were alive.

C. To help us understand nature in a better way. D. To explain why floods and droughts happen.
39. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A When the water cycle is most active. B. The different forms of water on Earth.
C. How the water cycle works step by step. D. The problems caused by the water cycle.
40. Which sentence should go in “________” in Paragraph 3?
A. However, this cycle is not always perfect.
B. Without the cycle, we would face many problems.
C. As a result, we must learn to save water in our everyday life.

42. The underlined phrase “are native to” in Paragraph 2 means ________.
A. are popular in B. first came from C. are only found in D. looks strange to people
43. Why do people usually call the deer “milu” instead of “Pere David’s deer” now?
A. To attract more international visitors. B. Because the old name is too long.
C. To show its origin and China’s protection. D. Because it was first found in China in 1865.
44. In which order did these events happen?
a. People in Europe called it “Pere David’s deer.” b. Flood and war led to the end of milu in China.
c. Ancient Chinese books wrote about milu deer. d. China brought milu back and the number grew.
A. c→a→b→d B. a→c→b→d C. b→a→c→d D. c→b→a→d
45. Which is the best title for the article?

Tom, Huck and Joe decided to run away from the town and become pirates (海盗), never to return. They left at midnight on a raft (筏) and finally landed on an island five kilometers south of their town. They took the old sail from the raft and made a tent. Then they let the raft go down the river.
They built a fire and cooked some stolen food to eat, talking about the life of pirates.
“I wonder who drowned,” said Huck.
“It is us,” said Tom.
