Introductory Chemistry was taught at Duke University for many years by professor Bonk. One year, two guys took the class and did pretty well on all the exams and mid terms. They each had an A. These two friends were so confident in going into the final that the weekend before finals week, despite the Chemistry final being on Monday, they decided to go to the University of Virginia to party with some friends.
They had a great time there. However with their hangovers (宿醉) and tiredness, they overslept all day Sunday and didn’t make it back to Duke until early Monday morning. Rather than taking the final then, they found professor Bonk after the final and explained to him how they missed the final. They told him they went up to the University of Virginia for the weekend and had planned to come back in time to study, but they had a flat tire (轮胎) on the way back and didn’t have a spare. So they were late getting back to campus.
Bonk thought this over and agreed that they could take the final the following day. The two guys, happily and relieved, studied that night and went in the next day at the time that Bonk had told them. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet. He told them to begin.
They looked at the first problem. So simple! It was worth 5 points. “Cool,” they thought, “this is going to be an easy final.” They then turned the page. They were unprepared, however, for what they saw on it. The question contained only two words: (95 points) Which tire?
4. Why did the two students decide to go to the University of Virginia?
A. Because they were scared of the final.
B. Because they had a chemistry class to attend.
C. Because they had great confidence in themselves.
D. Because they thought the final would be held there.
5. When did they take the final at last?
A On Tuesday. B. On Wednesday.
C. On Friday. D. On Sunday.
6. What can we know from the passage?
A. Bonk’s lessons were easy for his students.
B. Bonk didn’t believe the two guys’ explanation.
C. The two guys went back to campus late by design.
D. The two guys spent a lot of time repairing the flat tire.
7. What lesson does the story intend to tell us?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. He who is honest is wise.
C. Every dog has its day.
D. Actions speak louder than words.

With an AI tool, researchers study penguin photos taken by tourists and scientists to track Adélie penguins in Antarctica. “Right now, everyone has a camera in their pocket, and the number of photos we could collect for studying will be out of our expectation,” says Thomas Brown, a scientist from an international research team.
With guidance from an expert, the AI tool is able to get a handle on and draw out the penguin groups in photos. Compared with humans, the AI finds and marks Adélie penguins in these photos more quickly, taking only 5 to 10 seconds per image.
The team created a 3D map of the Antarctica to know exactly where the photos were taken. By identifying the details in the tourist pictures, the researchers could place the photographer and the habitats of the Adélie penguin groups within the 3D map to get a bird’s eye view. This allows researchers to track how Adélie penguin groups change in location and population size over time. Such tracking is important because it can tell the climate changes. That is what researchers want to know. Similarly, the AI tool can also use historical photos to track natural signs such as glacier (冰川) changes that develop very slowly and may only be obvious by looking across many years.
Opinions about AI tools are different among researchers. Some worry that using tourist photos for research may encourage more people to visit Antarctica, which might lead to more tourist activities and could destroy the ecosystem in the end. However, for Thomas, he believes studying tourist photos with the AI tool could be useful, especially as many penguin groups have not been noticed by the research community. “Since Antarctica is hard to study 24/7,” says Thomas, “this method is helpful for keeping an eye on penguin groups that might only get studied once in a while.”
8. Why does the research team employ an AI tool in their study?
A. To study the photos taken by scientists.
B. To recognize the 3D map of Antarctica.
C. To collect the photos provided by tourists.
D. To follow Adélie penguins in Antarctica.
9. What is the closest meaning of the phrase “get a handle on” in Paragraph 2?
A Explore. B. Confuse.
C. Identify. D. Ignore.
10. What do the researchers aim to find out through tracking Adélie penguins?
A. Climate changes. B. Ocean temperatures.
C. Penguin breeding habits. D. Location marks.
11. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. 3D map helps locate penguin groups.
B. Researchers use AI to track penguin groups.
C. Penguins can show signs of climate change.
D. Adélie penguins help to develop AI tools.

Sending a package back is not easy. Repacking, printing labels and shipping it back up to the seller is an increasingly familiar experience for online shoppers. In America 21% of online orders, worth some $218bn, were returned in 2021, according to the National Retail Federation, up from 18% in 2020. For clothing and shoes it can reach around 40%.
The problem has its roots in the birth of e-commerce. To compete with physical sellers and make buyers comfortable with ordering online, e-commerce companies offered free returns. Buyers came to expect it.
Each step of the process is costly. Retailers (零售商) have to pay for goods to be picked up or posted. Processing returns is labor-intensive (劳动密集型), explains Zac Rogers who worked as a returns manager at Amazon. A return must be opened and someone has to decide what to do with it. “A worker in an Amazon warehouse can pick 30 items in a minute, but a return can take ten minutes to process,” says Mr. Rogers.
Once processed, only 5% of the returned goods can be resold immediately by retailers. Most go to liquidators at the lowest prices or are thrown away.
One solution involves adding barriers. Last year, a Japanese fashion brand became one of the first retailers to charge a small fee for posted returns. Other companies are selling more refurbished (翻新的) goods as a way to cut losses.
Startups are getting in on the action. Using artificial intelligence to help retailers decide what to do with the returned goods is the brainchild of them. Happy returns, another startup, helps with logistics (物流). It has 5,000 drop-off points for returns across America, mostly in chain stores. The returns are collected and sent back to retailers all at once, saving up to 40% of postage costs.
Some are experimenting with virtual reality (VR). Over half of the items are returned because they are the wrong size. In June Walmart said it would buy Memomi, an augmented-reality (AR) startup that lets shoppers virtually try on glasses in real-time for an easy and fun experience. Walmart also offers ways to try on clothes and arrange furniture in rooms using AR.
12. Why did e-commerce firms offer free returns at first?
A. To cut costs of the goods.
B. To compete with physical stores.
C. To develop logistics service.
D. To show the advantage of shopping online.
13. Which of the following best describes the processing of returns?
A. creative. B. Automatic
C. Efficient. D. Expensive.
14. How did the Japanese company solve the return problem?
A. By charging a fee.
B. By raising the price of goods.
C. By selling more returned goods.
D. By using advanced technologies.
15. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Walmart has pioneered the use of AR.
B. Cooperation among companies is important.
C. Technology plays a role in reducing returns.
D. VR and AR will be used in more industries.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Ask a parent today what they worry about, and many will mention screen time. ____16____ Parents can’t help wondering: is my kid really doing homework on the computer, or has YouTube taken up four hours of their time?
In spite of these worries, many parents are resigned (顺从的) to the situation. They’ll tell their kids they aren’t allowed on social media, only to find that their children have opened accounts anyway. Many parents feel extremely desperate, while others have simply given up. ____17____ According to my own experience, talking is just not enough. We need clear rules around technology use because they are kids. Below is my advice.
____18____ Six out of ten 11-17-year-olds use their phones between midnight and 5 a.m. at least once a week. Not only do they lose sleep every time the phone buzzes and they grab it to check notifications, but the mere presence of a phone in the bedroom — even if unused overnight — can still disturb their sleep.
Then, first phones should be basic phones. ____19____ They have no social media and no AI companions, but they can call, text, and take pictures just like a smartphone. If you don’t want your kid on social media until they are 16 or older — and that’s the growing agreement — basic phones make that much easier, while allowing kids to text their friends.
Sticking to these rules is not always easy. But rules like these are far easier to follow than the unclear advice that “every kid is different.” Even if you can only follow some of the rules some of the time, your kids will benefit. ____20____
A. The best is certain to come.
B. Families care much about their kids.
C. Basic phones have no internet browser (浏览器).
D. Teens simply can’t put down their phones.
E. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
F. That’s because much advice is difficult to follow.
G. Strictly no electronic devices in the bedroom overnight.

Paul, a high school exchange student, came to our school with excitement, hoping to learn about the culture and language. However, learning Chinese was much harder than he thought. The characters looked like a puzzle, and the different tones (声调) confused him. Every Chinese class was a struggle, and Paul felt disappointed. Our classmates tried to help, but it was hard for them to understand each other. One day, after a difficult lesson, Paul sat down sadly. He felt like giving up. That’s when I, his partner, decided to step in.
I loved languages and was good at making difficult things easier to understand. I could see how upset Paul was, so I went up to him. “Paul, I know Chinese is hard, but I believe you can do it,” I said. “Let’s study together.” Paul looked a little doubtful but felt grateful. We started meeting after school. I shared some tips on how to remember characters and practice tones. Slowly, Paul began to improve, but he still had trouble speaking.
One day, while we were practicing, Paul stopped and said, “I still find it difficult to open my mouth to speak with our classmates freely.” He looked discouraged. I gently reminded him, “Paul, remember why you came here. You wanted to experience China, and learning the language is part of that.” He nodded. Just then, our Chinese teacher walked by and overheard our conversation. He smiled and said, “Paul, speaking is the key to learning any language. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.” His words gave Paul some encouragement. We continued practicing, and I had an idea. “Let’s try something different,” I suggested. “We’ll visit a local market and practice speaking with the vendors (摊贩). Maybe you’ll meet someone at the market, who can help you practice speaking in real situations. It’ll be more interesting than just studying in the classroom.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】One possible version:
At the market, Paul was nervous but excited. The lively atmosphere filled with colorful stalls and enthusiastic vendors immediately drew him in. I encouraged him to order some fruits in Chinese. At first, his pronunciation was shaky, but the elderly vendor, noticing his effort, patiently corrected him with a warm smile. By the third stall, Paul was confidently bargaining for souvenirs using simple sentences. A tea shop owner even invited us to taste different varieties, explaining their cultural significance in slow Mandarin. That day, Paul didn’t just practice language — he discovered how communication bridges cultures.
Weeks later, our Chinese teacher announced there would be a class speech on Chinese culture. To everyone’s surprise, Paul volunteered immediately. He spent days preparing, incorporating market experiences into his speech about “The Beauty of Daily Communication”. When he stood before the class, his tones were clear, and his gestures lively as he described how a street food vendor taught him the difference between baozi and jiaozi. The classroom erupted in applause. Later, the teacher praised his progress as “the magic of courage meeting opportunity,” and Paul whispered to me, “Now I understand mistakes are just steps to success.”
