When Paul Ninson of Ghana came to New York to study photography five years ago,
he found a large collection of images of life in Africa, past and present,on the shelves of
the city's libraries, galleries and museums, more than he had ever seen back home. That led
to an idea:oreate a library of photobooks in Ghana to reintroduce the tales of Africa to its
birthplace, allowing people to learn about their history and giving them the tools to tell new
stories of Afriea.
This isn't the only time Ninson set his sights on a seemingly impossible dream. When
he originally pursued (a career in photography, the challenge felt daunting.
Photography isn't much valued as a career path in Ghana,Ninson says:"If you tell your
parents you're going to be a photographer,it was like,Yuck,what?Go be a lawyer.'"
But Ninson felt photography was his calling. He was deeply influenced by the rich
family history of storytelling passed down through his grandparents and a friend's images.
It felt natural to combine the two arts,so he threw himself in.He sold his iPhone, bought a
camera and began studying photography, largely teaching himself.
With characteristic willpower,Ninson began hunting through New York City for
books to ship to Ghana. While continuing his studies,he searched secondhand stores on
the Lower East Side, participated in online bidding (wars and reached out to
publishers and galleries. He managed to collect more than 30,000 photobooks-mainly
about photography filmmaking, but also issues of publications.
Ninson's dream has been realized with the creation of the Dikan Center in Accra,
Ghana's capital. For Ninson,it is more than a library-it's a way to help Africans find their
identity(身份认同)through history. He doesn't see the library as an end but a start of
greater dreams.

A new scientific study has found that pesticides (are likely to cause a number of
Western monarch butterfly deaths, which helps people understand a major harm to this kind of
endangered insects.
As The Guardian reported, researchers discovered hundreds of dead or dying monarch
butterflies near a California protected area, where these butterflies usually overwinter. The
butterflies showed signs of being poisoned by chemicals that harm the nervous system. This
made the researchers do more advanced tests to find out what caused the large number of
deaths
The tests showed 15 kinds of pesticides on the dead butterflies, such as chemicals used to
kill insects and weeds. On average, each butterfly had seven different pesticides on it.Three
specific insect-killing chemicals were found in amounts that could kill the butterflies or almost
kill them.Almost all the tested samples ()had these highly poisonous chemicals, showing
that pesticides were probably the main cause of death.
This large number of deaths has made the already serious decline (of the Western
monarch butterfly population even worse.Since the 1980s,their numbers have dropped by
nearly 95%.In 2024,their population reached the second lowest level ever recorded, and by
2025 overwintering Western monarchs have totaled just 9119 individuals. The insects are listed
as endangered, and it may die out by 2080.
Another key takeaway from this event is just how unprotected monarchs are during
migration and overwintering. As such, preventing the deadly effects of pesticides is a priority
for monarch butterfly protection.Following the study results,an environmental protection
group suggests educating the public about the dangers of pesticides, creating areas without
pesticides around the places where butterflies spend the winter, improving protection measures
in plans to save the butterflies, and strengthening cooperation among officials to track pesticide
use.
Experts stress that both public knowledge and policy changes are important to protect the
butterflies'living places and help their population recover.
28.What led to further tests on the monarch butterflies?
A.Cold winter in California.
B.The application of chemicals.
C.The discovery in a protected area.
D.Poisoning signs of the nervous system.
29.What can be concluded from the tests?
A.Most tested samples had insect-killing chemicals.
B.There were 15 kinds of pesticides on each butterfly
C.Three poisonous chemicals were found on weeds
D.The chemicals on the butterflies were slightly harmful.
30.Why were the figures in paragraph 4 used?
A.To explain death causes.
B.To predict the die-out time.
C.To show population crash.
D.To rate the degree of endangerment.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Decline of Monarch Butterflies
B.Tests on Dead Monarch Butterflies
C.Pesticides'Harm to Monarch Butterflies
D.The Protection of Endangered Insects

Good social connections are related to better health, and a new research shows that
regularly helping people outside one's family can clearly slow down the decline in thinking
ability among middle-aged and older adults.
Both organized volunteer work and informal helping are equally useful, according to a
study led by researchers from the University of Texas at Austin. This study is one of the first to
compare organized volunteer work and informal helping.Informal helping, such as giving
someone a ride or looking after children, was once thought to have fewer health benefits
because it gets less social recognition. But the research found that it helps improve thinking
ability just as much as organized volunteer work.Helping for 2 to 4 hours a week gives the
strongest and most lasting benefits.
Long-term figures from the national Health and Retirement Study support these findings.
After considering elements like money, physical health and mental health, continuing to help
others still slows down the drop in thinking ability. The benefits grow when helping becomes a
regular habit year after year.On the other hand, stopping helping others is connected to worse
thinking ability.
The results show that everyday acts of support-whether organized or informal should be
seen as public health issues. This is especially important for older people, who are more likely
to face problems like poorer thinking ability and Alzheimer's disease(阿尔a兹海默症).Other
research by the same team found that volunteer work reduces the harmful effects of long-term
stress on body inflammation ()a known cause of poorer thinking ability. This benefit is
bigger for people with more inflammation.
In general, helping others is good for brain health. It reduces the physical tiredness caused
by pressure and strengthens social connections. As more societies grow older and loneliness
becomes a bigger problem, giving older people-even those who are not in the best
health-chances to help others is valuable. These people may get great benefits from such
opportunities.
32.What is true about informal helping?
A.Less social recognition.
B.Fewer health benefits.
C.More effective than volunteering.
D.Over four-hour service time.
33.What can be inferred about long-term regular helping?
A.It needs much money.
B.It brings growing benefits.
C.It requires professional skills
D.It only suits healthy people.
34.Why is the research important for public health?
A.It solves aging problems.
B.It lowers medical costs
C.It improves social equality.
D.It lowers the elderly's health risks.
35.What does the last paragraph indicate?
A.Loneliness hits the old most.
B.Helping others benefits social ties.
C.Health determines helping ability.
D.Brain health is a top health need.

be an even better friend or partner.39

Peter and Henry were close friends in the same class. They always hung out together and
went home together.
One afternoon,as they made their way home, loud shouts came from a street corner.
Peter's eyes lit up with excitement,"A fight!Let's go and see!"He pulled Henry's arm,but
Henry stepped back firmly,"It's none of our business. Our parents are waiting for us to have
dinner together.I don't want them to worry about us."
“Coward(▣小鬼)I”,said Peter and off he ran with some other boys..Henry shook his
head, watching them go,and then headed home alone, trying not to think too much about
Peter's words.
But Peter couldn't let it go.He told all their classmates that Henry was a coward.Soon,
everyone started laughing at Henry and avoided playing with him.
Henry felt sad but he didn't get angry with Peter. He remembered what his dad once told
him,"True courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding even though it is not the case,
and you ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong."Thus,he just ignored the other boys'
laughter and continued to go to school and study as well.
Peter,meanwhile,found new "friends".Every day after school,they didn't go home
directly but went to a nearby river on their way home, showing off how "brave"they were.
A few days later, disaster struck. That afternoon after school,Peter was bathing
with his new friends in a river happily.Suddenly, his feet got stuck in the soft mud ()and no
matter how hard he struggled,he couldn't pull them out.The mud kept pulling him down, and
soon panic set in.He cried for help. His friends froze for a second, and then got out of the river
as fast as they could. They were so frightened and did not even try to help him.
