The following day, her birthday, again on the way home, she asked 17 we could stop at the store to buy cakes for her. How could I say 18 to a birthday girl? After paying for the bill, I noticed that Norah was standing up in the cart, excitedly announcing, “Hi, old person! What is your favourite colour? US scientists have found a new colour called “olo”. It is a very deep blue-green.
Colours come from light. Our eyes and brain work together to see them. Light goes into our eyes and hits the retina (视网膜) at the back. On the retina, there are about 6 million cone cells (视锥细胞). Most of us have three groups of cone cells: S cones for blue, L cones for red, and M cones for green. When light hits the cones, they send “messages” to our brain. The brain then tells us what colour we see.
We can see about 10 million colours this way. But all of them fall between ultraviolet light (紫外线) and red light. Olo is outside this colour space, so we can’t see it with just our eyes, said ScienceAlert. In the new study, scientists made olo by using special tools to fire lasers (激光) into five people’s eyes safely. This “woke up” only the M cones. Natural light usually hits all cones, but this was different, said the BBC.
The study may open new doors for helping with colour-blindness (色盲), said USA Today. Imagine wearing special glasses that let you see olo every day. Maybe these glasses can help people with colour-blindness enjoy more colours in life, like the bright red of a strawberry or the fresh green of spring leaves. In our daily life, we often forget how amazing our eyes are. When we look at a rainbow or a sunset, thousands of cone cells are working together in less than a second. The new colour olo tells us that the world still has secrets waiting to be discovered.
Next time you pick up a crayon or choose a T-shirt, think about the tiny cone cells in your eyes. They are quietly telling your brain, “This is blue,” or “This is red.” And who knows? Maybe one day you will be the scientist who finds another brand-new colour!
29.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The olo light. B.The red light. C.The ultraviolet light. D.The natural light.
30.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?
A.Your brain tells cone cells in your eyes what colour you’re seeing.
B.Olo was first seen in nature by US scientists with just people’s eyes.
C.All colours fall between ultraviolet light and red light, including olo.
D.Many cone cells often work together when people look at a rainbow.
31.What is the main purpose of this text?
A.To warn readers about the danger of ultraviolet light.
B.To compare common people with ones with colour-blindness.
C.To explain how animals see colours differently from humans.
D.To introduce a newly created colour and the science behind it.
【答案】29.A 30.D 31.D
根据第三段“Natural light usually hits all cones, but this was different”...可知,“this”指代前一句中科学家用激光只激活M视锥细胞的实验方法,即人为制造的“olo光”现象。故选项中“The olo light”最直接对应。故选A。
30.细节理解题。根据第四段“When we look at a rainbow..., thousands of cone cells are working together.”

Two young Chinese street dancers,10-year-old Song Haoming and 14-year-old Fu Junxi, have taken the global street dance scene by storm. Competing in the Hip-Hop adult category at the Juste Debout 2025 World Finals in Paris on March 3, 2025, the team defeated two top international pairs to reach the semifinals—marking the best performance ever by a Chinese team in the competition’s history.
The two dancers showed the spirit of Chinese martial arts in their performance. They started with a polite fist-and-palm salute, then amazed everyone with a street dance mixed with kung fu moves like Phoenix Three Nods, Drunken Fist, Tai Chi, Wing Chun, and Shaolin spinning kicks. Their moves were sharp and smooth, lighting up the stage—and the best part? They designed the whole moves themselves!
All the achievements came from their years of hard work. Fu Junxi began learning street dance at the age of five and a half, while Song Haoming started practicing as early as three. Their smooth teamwork on stage rises from years of dance training.
In Song Haoming’s home, the living room is filled with his dance awards. His mom shared that whenever schoolwork isn’t too heavy, he practices nonstop—even repeating a single move hundreds of times. Bruised knees? Normal. To him, “Dancing is tiring but brings joy.” He pushes himself to improve every day, never ignoring details.
As for Fu Junxi, he turned his 6 square metres dining room into a dance studio. Every night, he practices for more than two hours in front of a mirror. Though he once felt like quitting, his parents’ support kept him going. Now, after 7 years, dance is his “happy childhood.”
Juste Debout (a famous dance competition) praised them online: “These fearless young dancers from China conquered the stage with unstoppable energy!” When the young dancers cheered on the Paris stage wrapped in China’s national flag, it showed the world the energy and creativity of Chinese culture shining brightly.
Now that the competition has ended, both children have returned to school and normal studies. Yet their creative journey continues, as they plan to mix China’s intangible cultural heritage-including lion dance, bian lian (face-changing), and traditional opera-with street dance. Though just in their early teens, they embrace both challenges and high expectations for what lies ahead.
32.What’s special about Song and Fu’s performance at the Juste Debout 2025 Finals?
A.They designed Tai Chi on their own. B.They showed smooth moves on the stage.
C.They used storm scenes in their street dance. D.They mixed Chinese martial arts with moves.
33.How did the two dancers achieve their smooth teamwork on stage?
A.With the help of a professional designer.
B.Through years of dance training and practice.
C.By learning from famous international dancers.
D.By attending the same school and practicing together daily.
34.What does the text show about Fu’s practice?
A.He prefers outdoor practice spaces.
B.He trains alone with skilled coaches.
C.He dances on weekends to focus on schoolwork.
D.He practices in his dance studio for over two hours nightly.
35.According to the text, what future plans do the dancers have?
A.To show traditional Chinese cultural elements. B.To become dance judges instead of performers.
C.To stop dancing and return to their school lives. D.To compete only in national-level competitions.

While fake (虚假) news can take many forms, it can be divided into two broad types: misinformation and disinformation.
Misinformation
Misinformation is when false information is shared by someone who believes that information to be true. Normally it isn’t done on purpose.
Disinformation
Disinformation is when misleading or even false information is shared with the intention to deceive (欺骗) others.
There are lots of reasons why people share fake news. Often the person sharing it doesn’t realize that it’s fake. Sometimes it’s done to advertise a service or product, so that someone can make money. It could even be done to make people laugh.
Fake news can also be shared by someone who wants others to hear their own personal opinions and be affected by them. Still, fake news is shared to influence the opinions and beliefs of others about organizations and business.
Fake news? Question it!
To work out whether the “news” we are reading is fake, we can use our critical (批判性) thinking skills to ask ourselves the following questions.
Is it a mistake or just a joke?
People sometimes share information, believing that it’s true, because they don’t realize that it’s a joke. It might even be April Fools’ Day!
Are there lots of spelling and grammar mistakes?
If yes, it’s a sign that no one is checking the content. This could mean that those writing the content are not professional writers or journalists and the news content is untrustworthy (不可靠的).
Is the article advertising something?
Sometimes a news article can influence us to buy something. Companies will often pay a news organization to talk about their product as if it’s “news” to encourage people to buy it.
Is the headline believable?
Sensational (耸人听闻的) headlines encourage us to click on a story because they catch our attention. Some people get paid for every click, so before clicking, ask yourself, does the story sound made-up, or even impossible?
Is there bias (偏见)?
Sometimes certain facts have been left out of a story because the writer wants the readers to believe it. Bias is an underlying (隐含的) opinion that guides our actions. See if you can fact-check the story with another news source if you’re unsure.
When fake news causes stress or hurt to the person or people it targets (将……作为目标), it is often the case that those who have helped spread it will claim they were not to blame. However, sharing fake news is just like adding fuel (燃料) to a fire. If the false information doesn’t get shared, it doesn’t get seen and cannot fulfil its purpose. When it comes to fake news, it’s not enough to not write something, we must refuse to share it, too.
36.What’s the main difference between disinformation and misinformation?
A.Disinformation is harmful to the public, while misinformation is not.
B.Disinformation is shared to deceive others, while misinformation is often not.
C.Disinformation is aimed at young people, while misinformation is aimed at older ones.
D.Disinformation is produced by professionals, while misinformation by ordinary people.
37.People spread fake news for the following reasons except to ________.
A.trick or entertain people B.challenge the news industry
C.make money through advertising D.influence public opinions and beliefs
38.According to the writer, what do lots of spelling or grammar mistakes show?
A.The news report is published in a hurry.
B.The news report isn’t professionally written.
C.The person who checks the content is careless.

A)阅读下面短文,根据所读内容,在文章后小题的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意最后两个小题词数不限。
A reader’s brain is different
It appears that few young people read for fun these days in the UK. In a 2024 survey by the UK charity The Reading Agency, almost one in four people aged 16~24 in the country said they didn’t read regularly. What does it mean? What kind of structure does a good reader’s brain actually have?
My new study published in the journal Neuroimage studied open-source data from more than 1,000 people. The result shows differences in two regions of the brain’s left temporal lobe (大脑左颞叶), which sits behind the left ear.
One is the lobe’s front part known as the temporal pole (颞极). It helps connect and sort different kinds of information. For example, to understand a word like “leg”, this brain region links how legs look, feel, and move. In people who read well, the left temporal pole is thinner compared to the right.
The other is the Heschl’s gyrus (海氏回) on the lobe’s upper part. The fold hosts the auditory cortex (听觉皮层) that processes sounds. That the auditory cortex would be related to reading might seem less obvious (明显的): isn’t reading mainly a visual skill? Not only. To match letters with speech sounds, we first need to be aware of the sounds of the spoken language. This phonological awareness has been known to set the stage for children’s reading development.
A thinner left Heschl’s gyrus has previously been often related to dyslexia (阅读障碍), a condition that makes reading very difficult. However, my research shows that this difference in thickness isn’t just about dyslexia. It applies to more people, where having a thicker auditory cortex is related to being better at reading skills. But it’s important to know that the brain changes when we learn something new or practice a skill we have already mastered. For example, young adults who studied languages a lot saw an increase in the thickness of brain areas related to language. Similarly, reading is likely to shape the structure of the left Heschl’s gyrus. So, if you want to keep your heschl’s gyrus healthy, pick up a good book and start reading.

D.The news report is likely to be written by a machine.
39.Which of the following can help us tell if a piece of news is fake?
① a biased fact is given ② its headline is sensational
③ the news content seems like a joke ④any product or service is mentioned
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④
40.Which of the following best describe the writer’s opinion on sharing fake news?
A.Support. B.Praise. C.Doubt. D.Disagree.

56 information
● Few young people enjoy reading in the UK.
● 1/4 of people aged 16~24 don’t have the 57 of regular reading.
A study
● It is 58 on open-source data from over 1000 people.
● It studies the influence of reading on the 59 structure.
Findings
There’re 60 lying in two parts of the brain’s left temporal lobe.
The temporal pole
● It lies in the front part of the lobe.
● It helps connect and sort information.
● Skilled 61 have a thinner left temporal pole.
The Heschl’s gyrus
● It lies on the upper part of the lobe.
● The auditory cortex in this part deals with sounds.
● Though it isn’t 62 noticed, the auditory cortex helps children’s reading development.
● People with a thicker auditory cortex do 63 in reading.
