Here're some must-visit museums while you're traveling.
Museum of the History of Medicine
"It was built in 1902.Its collections exhibited are concentrated on surgical instruments and
other medical devices, especially those from the 16th to the 19th century,"says Andrea
Barbe-Hulmann,the museum's head.It was in those long dark days before anesthesia(
that doctors and surgeons relied on tools that, while innovative for the time, look
today so terrible. Each is laid out in glass cases on the second floor of Paris Cite
University-a hall of horrors that was once at the cutting edge of health care.
Museum of Fairground Arts
Created by Jean Paul Favand in 1996 in Paris,it's more like a 19th-century fair than a
museum.Almost everything here demands interaction."The museum is brought to life by
our visitors, says Favand."Objects can be touched, and there's the possibility to play

with century-old fairground attractions or ride old merry-go-rounds operated by the

Sewer(下水道)Museum
So many visitors have been coming here since guided tours of the modern waste
system began at the 1867 Paris World's Fair, riding in boats pushed by sewer workers.
The mode of transportation was discontinued when it was officially founded in 1975,and
the mode was replaced by walking tours that travel more than a third of a mile through
underground.Although visitors never have to face to face with raw sewage, there's no
escaping its unpleasant smell.
The Louvre Museum
Built in the early 12th century in Paris, the Louvre was previously used as a royal
castle. It was turned into a museum in the late 1700s and today displays around 35,000
objects. It's home to some of the world's most famous artistic treasures, including
Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.

Everyone knows chewing gum(口香糖),but few people know the story behind it..
On June 26,1974,at the Marsh Supermarket in Troy,Ohio,as in major grocers
throughout the country, cashiers would ring up items by entering the price of each on a
cash register by hand before computing a final total. That day, though, saw something
new:An employee named Sharon Buchanan rang up a packet of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit
chewing gum without ever having to key in a price.Instead, she used a remarkable new
device to scan()a symbol on the packaging that'd indicate the cost. For customers
and cashiers alike, this would change shopping forever, making checkout a piece of cake.
Clyde Dawson, who purchased that gum from Buchanan, was Marsh's head of
development and research.Marsh had been preparing for this big day since 1970,when
the grocery industry began to study the possibilities of introducing barcode scanning into
stores.Though at the beginning the shoppers viewed the new tech in disbelief-they
missed the old hand-placed price tags on each product-the checkout process itself was
undeniably smoother. The store manager at Marsh's declared a victory for all shoppers,
"This system will definitely avoid cashier error.
With the arrival of the micro-computer and the creation of laser()scanner
technology in the early 1970s,the game-changing scanner known as the Spectra-Physics
Model A was produced. The scanner projected light onto a given item's barcode. In no
time at all,the machine then translated the reflected light and directed the distinguished
data to an in-store computer, which matched the incoming signal with a product
description and price. The device could read a code so small that it could be printed on a
pack of chewing gum.
Now,the improved scanners are everywhere around us,especially in the self-checkout
registers that we see all the time-all thanks to the revolution that began 50 years ago,
when Sharon Buchanan scanned Clyde Dawson's gum.

Dozens of wildfires are burning across Canada in May 2024 and sending unhealthy
smoke blowing into the northern US again. At the same time, the southeastern US is
getting smoke from Mexico, where drought()conditions have been fueling fires.
Last year,Canada's record 2023 wildfire season introduced millions of Americans
across the Midwest and northeastern states to the health threats of wildfire smoke, with
air quality warnings that reached levels never seen there before.Professional baseball
games were postponed and the skies in New York City turned orange,at times exposing
millions of people to the worst air quality in the world. In some regions, the smoke hung
on for days.Hotter, drier conditions, coupled with dry grasses and underbrush that built
up over decades of fire control, have made large wildfires more common.
Canada is experiencing a second consecutive(extremely dry year in 2024,and it
is also facing the re-emergence of fires that burnt underground through the winter. In
May,2024,smoke from fires in British Columbia and Alberta reached unhealthy levels
from Montana to Wisconsin and began to spread south and east into the Midwest and
Great Lakes region. The North American Seasonal Fire Assessment and Outlook for May
through July highlights drought conditions in western Canada and Central America are
higher than normal fire risk in both regions.More importantly,it notes the challenge of
forecasting fire risk for later in the year as the El Nino climate pattern changes to La Nina
in late summer.
Computer simulations()of the future in a warming climate show there will be
more smoky days, higher smoke concentrations, larger burned areas and higher carbon
emissions from the fires, which further fuel climate change. In short, people will need to
learn to live with wildfire smoke. It won't be every year, but it will be more common.
28.Why does the author mention“baseball games'”and“the skies in New York”?
A.To illustrate wildfires in Canada are a trend.
B.To show how scientists evaluate air quality.
C.To emphasize the consequences of wildfires.
D.To explain the return of wildfires in Canada.
29.How does the change of climate patterns affect wildfire risk predictions?
A.It increases their uncertainty.
B.It makes them more accurate.
C.It offers more detailed data.
D.It simplifies their processes.
30.Which statement does the author agree with concerning wildfire smoke?
A.It can prevent La Nina.
B.It will be a new normal.
C.It relies on climate change.
D.It means more burned areas.

Can artificial intelligence(AI)make a tastier chocolate chip cookie(CCC)recipe than
a human being?
Dan Souza,a top cookie expert from America's Test Kitchen, did the experiment. He
matched the Test Kitchen's Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe against recipes from two
AI programs,ChatGPT and DishGen."When it comes to CCCs,if you make small
changes to ingredients(配料),you'll find that you get some pretty massive differences,”
Souza explained."So,it's kind of a fun one to use as a perfect test for how successful a
recipe development could be.
Souza required each AI program to come up with a CCC recipe. The results were
nearly identical."If you look on the back of the packaging bag of Toll House chocolate
chip cookies, which is where most CCC recipes kind of come from, the AI recipe is a
pretty good copy of that,Souza said.DishGen had an "adjust"button if you wanted to
change the recipe to make the cookies chewier. But there were some disappointments.
"The craziest thing is that I asked ChatGPT or DishGen to do it on different days, and I
actually got completely different recipes. So,the same prompt but I had a different recipe,
which I found totally annoying. If I had something that I liked and I wanted to make it
again,I couldn't.”
Souza said the Test Kitchen recipe has many innovations that the AI engines couldn't
pick up on.He thought the Test Kitchen's Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe lived up
to its name, with its cookies crunchy()on the edges and chewy in the middle.
Souza explained the AI recipes have a lot of potential, but that the technology is not
quite there yet, emphasizing:"It's missing the people part of it.So,if you're tasting a
CCC recipe that your mom has made forever, there's a big emotional pull there. And that
actually influences how you taste something. We eat with our eyes, but we also eat with
all of our emotions. You're never going to get that from an AI."
32.Why were chocolate chip cookies chosen as a comparison subject?
A.Chocolate chip cookies are one of the most popular desserts.
B.The recipe for chocolate chip cookies is very difficult to make.
C.Artificial intelligence has a unique advantage in making cookies.
D.Small changes in ingredients can lead to great differences in taste.
33.Which of the following can replace the underlined word "prompt"in Paragraph 3?
A.Reason.
B.Assumption.
C.Order.
D.Concern.
34.Which is Souza's opinion about the AI chocolate chip cookie recipes?
A.They are lacking in human factors.
B.They awaken eaters'emotions easily.
C.They affect producers'proper choices.
D.They defeat America's Test Kitchen.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.AI Defeats Human in CCC Recipes
B.AI Makes CCC Recipes more Quickly
C.Can You Distinguish AI's CCC Recipes?
D.Are You Favorable to AI's CCC Recipes?

Shortly before the exams, almost every student is in a state of emergency. You learn
until the doctor comes.36 Here're the best tips on how you can achieve more in your
studies with less work!
Schedule fixed times. Many students find it difficult to organize their free time. There
is often a lack of motivation to learn since you can always postpone it to another time
anyway. At some point, you have so much work that you don't know where to start.37
For this reason, you should schedule fixed working hours.A well-structured plan with
balanced study periods will increase your motivation and productivity! You know where to
start and can tick off the task at the end, which gives you a sense of achievement.38
Know your performance curve().Everyone has a rhythm. Some are productive as
soon as they get up in the morning, and some are only late in the evening.39 In your
high phases you can think much more concentrated and therefore also need significantly
less work and time.Of course,it can also be as late as 10:00 p.m.Don't let yourself be
forced into any pattern.
40 Many students like to study on their own.Of course, this has the advantage
that you work more concentrated. However,it can happen that you lose yourself in the
lecture material and perhaps do not take important aspects into account. The advantage of
a study group is that you can work on the lecture material together and ask each other
questions to improve your studies.
A.Study with others.
B.Seek help when needed.
C.But in fact,that doesn't have to be.
D.Understand your study weaknesses and get rid of them.
E.In this way,you can achieve good results with significantly less work.
F.Know your ups and downs and adjust your working hours accordingly.
G.This helplessness is not only very demotivating, but also a big-time waster.
