My middle school life is meaningful and valuable.
When it comes to schoolwork and sports, I feel especially
confident. I did well in all the subjects and I got good grades in every
exam. As for sports, I joined the basketball and the football club in our
school. In addition, I won first place in the 500-meter race at the
school sports meeting. However, I’m not very good at doing chores at
home. My mother told me doing chores can help to develop
independence and responsibility. So I have made up my mind to do more
chores, such as washing the clothes and cooking some simple dishes.
I believe I can get over my weakness and be a better person.

When I finished high school, I traveled with a friend and we
visited 17 countries in Europe. What an adventure(冒险)we had!
After this, I studied at three different universities and lived in

that we should never stop moving. I want to have a life full of

Their first stop in the aquarium was to see the penguins. Erica
noticed that some of the penguins walked together. Others had little baby

“How come some of those penguins stay together?” Erica asked
Ms. Lane.
“Well, some penguins stay together to keep each other warm and
safe,” explained Ms. Lane. “By using some signals (信号) like we
do, they let other penguins know if there is danger, while others look
after their babies. Without the group, the babies would get lost or go
hungry,” 虚拟语气,表示与现在事实相反

“Like us,” said Lisa. “We are a school because we all stay

“Some schools of fish stick together in order to stay alive in their

/汉字之美·汉字演变与文化传承/ As one of the most ancient
characters, Chinese characters have played an important role in the
development of Chinese culture. The history of the Chinese language can
be studied by looking at how these characters developed.

① Chinese writing began thousands of years ago. According to
Chinese mythology(神话), a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese
writing. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of
animals in the snow and noticed that the appearance of each one was
different. Then he used different shapes to show different objects. The
first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some
characters have been simplified (简化) and others have been made more
difficult over time.
一
二
三
四
五

② However, as a whole, the characters have developed
from drawings into standard forms. The character for “mountain” was
at first three mountaintops together. This became one mountaintop and
three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays.
一

三
四
五

③ Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by
adding two or more characters together. For example, the Chinese
character for “rest” was made up of the characters for “man” and
“tree”. The character for “prisoner” was formed with a “man”
inside a “square”. Other characters were developed for directions and
numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区分) their meanings by looking at
them, for example, the characters for “up” and “down”, which
are opposites of each other.

④ Though these kinds of characters show meanings, one of
their weaknesses is that they do not show how they should be
pronounced. So a method was developed to have one part of a character
show the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese
characters used today were made this way.

In the 1950s, the Chinese government introduced simplified
Chinese characters in the hope of making learning to read and write easier

My middle school life is meaningful and valuable.
When it comes to schoolwork and sports, I feel especially
confident. I did well in all the subjects and I got good grades in every
exam. As for sports, I joined the basketball and the football club in our
school. In addition, I won first place in the 500-meter race at the
school sports meeting. However, I’m not very good at doing chores at
home. My mother told me doing chores can help to develop
independence and responsibility. So I have made up my mind to do more
chores, such as washing the clothes and cooking some simple dishes.
I believe I can get over my weakness and be a better person.
