Isaque Carvalho Borges, a 16-year-old high school student from Brazil, delivered his award winning proposal to become the Central and South America winner of the 2025 Earth Prize. Borges pointed out that urban heat islands are a growing problem and introduced a cutting-edge concept to draw on AI and satellites to plant much-needed green spaces to cool overheated cities. He said, “This is an opportunity to save cities around the world while also saving the future.”
An urban heat island is an area within a city that is significantly warmer than its surroundings. This phenomenon is often caused by the dense (密集的) construction, concrete surfaces, and waste heat generated by human activity in cities. These areas provide less shade and moisture than natural landscapes. This can lead to a dramatic increase in temperatures within a relatively small area. Because of the warming climate, urban heat islands can also contribute to an increase in pollution and electricity usage from air conditioning units.
Borges said that certain cities are experiencing unbearable living conditions and worsening climate change. According to the 2020 U. S. Census (人口普查), 80% of Americans live in urban areas. That’s 265.1 million people. With some temperatures in urban heat islands rising up to 20°F higher than surrounding areas, vulnerable (脆弱的) populations such as old adults face a higher risk of heat-related health problems. Borges’ project would analyze historical patterns to locate areas in need to maximize results and offer relief to those in the city, which offers a chance to prevent urban heat islands from developing in the first place.
“Using AI, satellite data, and urban planning, my project will identify the areas most at risk of heat islands in Palmas,” Borges said. “...The goal? To inform local authorities and organizations where to plant trees, build green spaces, and carry out policies to cool the city down.”
4. What is the main goal of Borges’ project?
A. To expand forests with the help of AI.
B. To improve the efficiency of satellites.
C. To find the causes of urban overheating.
D. To cool hot cities with green spaces.
5. What does “an urban heat island” probably refer to?
A. A city with a large population.
B. A place with a few tall buildings.
C. An area in a city with higher temperatures.
D. An island greatly affected by global warming.
6. Why is the U.S. Census data mentioned?
A. To confirm the number of heat islands.
B. To show the severity of urban heat islands.
C. To highlight its effect on vulnerable populations.
D. To emphasize the success of Borges’ project in the U.S.
7. How will Borges’ project help with city planning?
A. By providing data for taking cooling measures.
B. By analyzing data on urban population growth.
C. By designing new buildings with modern facilities.
D. By suggesting policies to reduce electricity usage.

Throughout the United Kingdom, a remarkable shift is taking shape: more young people are choosing to use non-smartphones on purpose. The year 2025 has seen basic mobile devices, commonly labeled dumbphones, outsell all expectations in what was once considered a smartphone-only generation.
Recent data from Medico Digital reveals nearly 3 in 5 Gen Z (those born between 1995 and 2009) said they’d like to cut down on screen time, stating anxiety, information overload, and poor sleep as key motivators. A Vodafone UK report showed a 76% increase in sales of non-smartphones between 2022 and 2023, while Carphone Warehouse noted growing demand among under-25s. TikTok videos under the #dumbphone and #digitaldetox labels are full of teens showing off their basic phones, and praising the impact on their focus and mental well-being.
“This is a clear sign that Gen Z is more mindful about their mental health than we often give them credit for. In our work with National Health Service (NHS) and private health providers, we’ve noticed a growing concern about tech-driven anxiety, and younger patients are leading the charge to take control. Going back to a dumbphone isn’t anti-progress, but a healthy rebalancing. It removes the constant digital input and gives your brain the breathing room it desperately needs. That space is where proper sleep, focus, and even joy can return,” says Oliver Capel, Digital Health expert from Medico Digital. “For UK teens and students especially, where social pressure and mental health concerns are at an all-time high, even temporary (暂时的) breaks can make a noticeable difference. And this isn’t just a trend! It’s the early stages of a broader movement around conscious tech use. The future of digital health is about balance, not disconnection.”
From Shoreditch students to Scottish countryside locals, Gen Z is proving that old-school is groundbreaking. More than a nostalgia (怀旧) trip, the dumbphone is a strong tool in the fight for digital well-being. And whether you abandon your smartphone or just reduce the use of it, the message is clear: when it comes to mental health, less really can be more.
8. What does recent data show about Gen Z?
A. They reduce the use of mobile phones.
B. They totally give up using smartphones.
C. They spend more time on social media.
D. They prefer advanced mobile phones.
9. What does Oliver Capel think of the trend?
A. It merely appeals to younger adults.
B. It makes people disconnected from digital.
C. It is a refusal to accept modern technology.
D. It represents a healthy balance in digital life.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards the trend?
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring.
C. Supportive. D. Unclear.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Future of Digital Health
B. The Benefits of Gen Z’s Reducing Screen Time
C. The Rise of Dumbphones Among Gen Z
D. The Impact of Technology on Mental Health

Skinning your knee or cutting a finger is a small inconvenience for most of us — it usually involves a few days of discomfort and wearing a band-aid before everything goes back to normal. But for those stuck with a slow-healing (愈合慢的) injury, it’s a totally different story. Wounds that take weeks or even months to close can be painful, stressful, and increase the risk of infections, hospital visits or even long-term health problems, especially for people with diabetes (糖尿病) or other potential conditions.
Now, researchers in the U.S. have developed a smart device that doesn’t just cover wounds, but actively treats them using AI. The device, known as a-Heal, is basically a high-tech upgrade to the everyday bandage. It consists of a bunch of mini cameras alongside bio-electronic sensors as well as an AI system that monitors the wound. They work together to decide what stage of healing the wound is in before serving up personalized treatment right there and then.
Depending on what the device can see, it can either apply a tiny electric field to help the wound close, or deliver a proper amount of anti-inflammatory medicine directly to the skin. Then it checks again, updates its plan dynamically (动态地), and repeats the cycle all over again. The result is a closed-loop system that personalizes care without the patient having to do anything. It’s also said to speed up the wound-healing process by a massive 25%.
“It’s actually a microscope,” said Professor Mircea Teodorescu, a scientist involved in the study. “Individual images say little, but over time, continuous imaging lets AI spot trends, scrutinize issues, and suggest treatments.”
Unlike most machine learning tools, the AI here actually learns about the patient as it goes, constantly adjusting its strategy to deliver the right amount of medicine or the right level of electrical stimulation. It’s a sort of digital trial-and-error, but much faster and smarter.
While it’s not yet on the market, the development suggests that a-Heal could be a game changer for the medical industry, especially for people dealing with hard-to-heal or infected wounds.
12. What problem do slow-healing wounds cause according to paragraph 1?
A. Severe diabetes.
B. A higher infection risk.
C. Loss of the sense of pain.
D. Short-term inconvenience.
13. How does the a-Heal work to treat wounds?
A. By applying a constant electric field.
B. By delivering a fixed amount of medicine.
C. By monitoring and adjusting treatments dynamically.
D. By taking a single image and providing standard care.
14. What does the underlined word “scrutinize” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A Examine. B. Remove.
C. Ignore. D. Postpone.
15. What can be inferred about the future of a-Heal?
A. It will be available in all hospitals soon.
B. It will significantly improve wound treatment.
C. It will mainly be used by people with diabetes.
D. It will face rejection from the medical industry.

The mindset (心态) plays a vital role in how people deal with and respond to different challenges and problems in life. ____16____ While each individual’s mindset is unique, they can be grouped into two general types: the fixed mindset and the growth mindset.
The fixed mindset refers to the belief that ability or talent is a fixed characteristic that does not change over time. It sees effort useless, because one doesn’t have to work hard if they have the talent or skill. Those with such a mindset are concerned with the appearance of being smart to prove their abilities. ____17____ Thus, a fear of not living up to expectations develops during early childhood. Besides, they see helplessness as a sign of failure, which means it is time to give up.
____18____ As such, they believe that talent is developed over time through practice, study and other efforts. They enjoy challenges and are more likely to explore and hug new experiences. They see making errors as an opportunity to try new approaches. This means they develop hardiness and determination during their formative years.
Mindset development primarily happens during childhood, which means parents, teachers, and peers have a significant effect on one’s attitude towards ability. ____19____
Valuing growth allows an individual to see criticism as a necessary element of improvement, and recognize challenges and failures as opportunities for self-improvement. ____20____ When moving forward, just focus on the process instead of the end result.
A. Here are ways a growth mindset can serve you.
B. It also affects toughness, determination and motivation.
C. It’s about learning from mistakes and moving forward.
D. People with a growth mindset consider abilities as adaptable.
E. Additionally, it shifts the focus on seeking approval to learning.
F. But this doesn’t mean individuals can’t develop a growth mindset on their own.
G. Individuals who are taught to have this behavior focus on how they are judged.

At Riverside High, there was a boy named Jacob who always sat at the back of the classroom. Most of the time, he was quiet, but when he heard something he cared about, he couldn’t help cutting in — he was afraid no one would listen to his ideas if he waited. It was this habit that bothered his classmates — he would often interrupt others while they were talking. Jacob didn’t mean to be rude; he was just eager to share his own thoughts. When Sarah was explaining her idea for the science project, Jacob cut in with, “Actually, I think we should do it this way.” When David was telling a funny story at lunchtime, Jacob jumped in before he could finish. His classmates found this really frustrating.
Sarah once told him gently, “Jacob, could you please let me finish my sentence?” David also said, “It’s not fun when you interrupt my story.” But Jacob didn’t pay much attention. He thought they were just too sensitive and continued to speak out of turn.
Over time, Jacob noticed that his classmates didn’t involve him in conversations any more. During group work, he was often left without a partner. When camping, he would sit alone while others laughed and chatted in groups close by. Jacob felt lonely but didn’t understand why.
One afternoon, Jacob stayed late in the library to study. He overheard two of his classmates, Emma and Liam, talking quietly at a nearby table. Emma said, “Jacob never lets anyone finish talking. It’s like he doesn’t care what we have to say.” Liam nodded and replied, “I know. It’s hard to feel heard when he’s around.” Jacob’s face turned red with shame. For the first time, he realized how his interruptions made others feel — unimportant and disrespected.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
That evening, Jacob thought over what he had heard.

【答案】4. D 5. C 6. B 7. A

A. Examine. B. Remove.
C. Ignore. D. Postpone.
15. What can be inferred about the future of a-Heal?
A. It will be available in all hospitals soon.
B. It will significantly improve wound treatment.
C. It will mainly be used by people with diabetes.
D. It will face rejection from the medical industry.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. B

考查非谓语动词。句意:清晨的武当山周边空气凉爽,一名身着黑袍的高个子男子缓缓将重心从一条腿移到另一条腿,手臂划出流畅的圆圈,仿佛在描摹空气。此处为非谓语动词作定语,a tall man与dress为被动关系,用过去分词dressed,be dressed in为固定搭配,意为“穿着”。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
That evening, Jacob thought over what he had heard.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After days of listening more and speaking less, something amazing happened.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
That evening, Jacob thought over what he had heard. He recalled the disappointed looks on his classmates’ faces whenever he cut them off. He decided to break his bad habit. Determined to start fresh, he made up his mind to behave differently. The next day in English class, he waited until Sarah finished speaking before responding. She smiled warmly in surprise. At lunch, he listened attentively to David’s story without cutting in, laughing at the right moments and asking questions afterward. David nodded appreciatively.
After days of listening more and speaking less, something amazing happened. Jacob noticed that his classmates began to warm to him. Emma invited him to a study group, and Liam asked for his help with a math problem. For the first time in a long while, Jacob felt a profound sense of belonging. Through daily practice, he learned that real conversation means valuing others’ words, not just sharing his own. In the end, he built stronger, more respectful friendships and realized that sometimes, the kindest thing you can do is simply listen.
