THE PALISADES FIRE in Los Angeles burned Charlotte Tragos’s home to the ground. “It was a pretty special and unique house,” says Tragos, who fled with her family when the fire broke out. “The streets were packed with people running, driving on the wrong side of the road,” she says, adding that everyone knew they were running for their lives.
A few days after the fire started, a friend shared a video with her of a Los Angeles artist offering to create, for free, watercolor paintings of people’s homes before they were scorched (烧焦). Tragos reached out to the artist, Jordan Heber, asking if she could do Tragos’s childhood home. Heber accepted and completed a painting of Tragos’s home in just three days. Tragos says she will forever be grateful to Heber. “It means the world,” she says. “We’re in a position where we have nothing, and anything like that, especially pieces that mark what the house meant to us — it is really uplifting.”
“I moved around a lot when I was younger, and so the meaning of home is significant to me,” Heber says. After the wildfires started, Heber thought about ways she could contribute. A friend sent her an Instagram post by another local artist offering to draw people’s homes at no charge, and Heber was inspired. Shortly after she posted her offer on social media, requests started coming in.
Heber has created more than 25 paintings, including one for Jeremy Wineberg, whose home in Pacific Palisades was destroyed. “It was a place you never wanted to leave,” says Wineberg, adding that the house had been in his family for nearly 30 years. “We told her our story, and she so kindly and lovingly made such a beautiful memory that looks exactly as if it was a photograph,” says Wineberg. Heber is glad people find her paintings meaningful, saying, “Hopefully it inspires others to pitch in with their own gifts.”
24. How did Tragos feel about Heber’s painting of her childhood home?
A. She viewed it mainly as a beautiful piece of artwork.
B. She felt it failed to capture the true memory of her home.
C. She found it emotionally comforting during a difficult time.
D. She considered it a practical replacement for her lost belongings.
25. Why did Jordan Heber offer to paint for wildfire victims?
A. She needed to improve her painting skills. B. She was responding to numerous requests.
C. She was inspired by an artist’s act of kindness. D. She valued the meaning of home since childhood.
26. Which of the following can best describe Jordan Heber?
A. Conservative and selfless. B. Innovative and compassionate.
C. Humble and adventurous. D. Enterprising and devoted.
27. What can be inferred from Jordan Heber’s words in the last paragraph?
A. She wants to teach wildfire victims how to paint.
B. She hopes to encourage more people to help others.
C. She regrets not being able to help more wildfire victims.
D. She plans to stop painting and focus on her full-time job.

Twice a week, Adam Knox jumps into a four-wheel-drive pickup and climbs to a forest high in the mountains of Hawaii. “You feel like you’re in one of those adventure-type movies,” Knox says. “This is where the native birds live.” These birds are honeycreepers. They’re in danger of going extinct because of avian (鸟类的) malaria, a disease spread to birds by mosquitoes. To save them, the American Bird Conservancy has launched an innovative conservation project. As a drone pilot and project member, Adam Knox goes into the forest with a key mission: to release more mosquitoes as part of a scientific intervention.
Instead of chemicals, “this technique uses mosquitoes to fight mosquitoes,” says scientist Christa Seidl, of Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project. When the mosquito project began, in 2023, helicopters were the best available means. “It’s been a long road to get here, with a lot of trial and testing,” Knox says. “But at this point, we have a system that can fly in these difficult environments.” Plus, drones are quieter, cost less, and allow more flexibility with timing.
Honeycreepers live in Hawaii, and nowhere else. There used to be more than 50 species. “Now there are only 17,” says Chris Farmer, ABC’s Hawaii program director. Unlike honeycreepers, mosquitoes are not native to Hawaii. As temperatures have warmed, mosquitoes have moved higher to honeycreeper habitat. A single mosquito bite can kill a honeycreeper.
The mosquitoes Knox drops into the forest are males, so they don’t bite or transmit disease. They’ve been raised in a lab and bred to carry a natural bacteria that prevents them from reproducing with wild females. When these mosquitoes mate with wild ones, the eggs that are produced won’t hatch. “This lowers the mosquito population over time,” Seidl says, especially since most females mate only once. It also gives honeycreepers time to bounce back.
Conservationists aren’t sure how long it will take. Until then, Knox will continue doing drone drops. And Seidl will continue tracking mosquito numbers and honeycreeper health. “Everyone is so committed and works so hard because we understand that it is our responsibility to save these birds,” Farmer says. “And we can do that. We have the technology.”
28. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To emphasize the risks involved in Knox’s work.
B. To introduce the honeycreeper conservation project.
C. To describe the natural habitat of the honeycreepers.
D. To state the main threat to the honeycreepers’ survival.
29. What do we know about the project from paragraph 2?
A. Its primary objective. B. Its scientific principle.
C. Its operational approach. D. Its developmental challenges.
30. What does the underlined phrase “bounce back” probably mean?
A. Survive. B. Migrate. C. Withdraw. D. Restore.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Studying bird diseases. B. Using drones in forests.
C. Saving birds with mosquitoes. D. Tracking wildlife numbers.

Sunscreen is a literal lifesaver for humans, protecting us from dangerous ultraviolet (UV) rays (紫外线) and skin cancer. However, the same cannot be said for its effects on marine life. Every year, thousands of tons of commercial sunscreens wash off swimmers and wind up in the planet’s oceans. Studies indicate that the chemicals from commercial sunscreens can cause pollution and lead to coral bleaching, threatening marine habitat.
Drawing inspiration from nature, material scientists at Nanyang Technological University have developed the world’s first pollen-based sunscreen to address this critical issue. Pollen (花粉) grains have evolved strong outer layers that safeguard their internal components against unfavorable environmental conditions, including intense UV rays. Crucially, this natural protective characteristic remains effective during extraction, positioning pollen as a safer, eco-conscious sunscreen alternative.
Unlike commercial sunscreens that rely on harmful chemicals, the pollen-based sunscreen adopts a gentle, eco-friendly production process, using pollen’s naturally tough shell to form a lightweight natural microgel (微凝胶) that acts as a UV barrier. Laboratory tests confirm it achieves a sun protection factor (SPF) of about 30, blocking approximately 97% of UV rays. This matches the protection level of commercial alternatives, while being far gentler for sensitive skin.
Beyond its eco-friendliness, the pollen sunscreen offers cooling benefits even during peak UV hours (10 a.m. — 4 p.m.). In tests, skin treated with the pollen sunscreen stayed up to 5℃ cooler for as long as 20 minutes under intense UV radiation of 3200 μW/cm2, a level typical of midday summer sunlight. This cooling effect stems from pollen’s natural trait of absorbing less heat, which addresses the overheating discomfort common with regular sunscreens.
Despite its advantages and UV protection meeting commercial standards, the product remains unavailable to consumers. As Cho Nam-Joon, the study’s leading author, emphasized, “Official approvals and additional tests on its sustained reliability under various storage conditions are necessary before market launch.” This required process delays its arrival on store shelves, even as the pollen-based sunscreen shows great potential for reducing chemical pollution and protecting both human health and marine life.
32. What is the problem with commercial sunscreen?
A. The risk of skin cancer. B. The inefficiency of UV protection.
C. The difficulty in washing off. D. The threat to marine ecosystems.
33. What distinguishes the pollen-based sunscreen?
A. Its high SPF value. B. Its natural ingredients.
C. Its marine-based components. D. Its skin-repair ability.
34. How does the author explain the cooling effect of the pollen sunscreen?
A. By providing statistics. B. By designing a test.
C. By making comparisons. D. By describing a process.
35. What is the focus of the last paragraph regarding the pollen sunscreen?
A. Procedures of its official approval. B. Outlook for its market performance.
C. Factors for its delayed launch. D. Significance of its reliability tests.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
At first glance, the idea of living a minimalist (极简主义的) lifestyle may sound difficult, restrictive, or even boring. I was a bit doubtful when I first decided to take on minimalist living. ____36____ Becoming a minimalist has given me more time and freedom for what I love and value.
It’s pretty common for beginners to think that minimalism starts with hard-to-manage habits and rules. ____37____ Minimalism starts with your mindset, the lens through which you are viewing your life, then moves outward from there to become actionable habits and steps.
Another big misunderstanding when it comes to living a minimalist life is that the main goal of becoming a minimalist is to get rid of as much stuff as possible. Wrong again! The main goal of minimalism is to get rid of the things that don’t contribute to the value of your daily life. ____38____
In order to make more space for the things you value, you first have to identify what those things are. Ask yourself what your life could use more of and what you could use less of in your day-to-day life. ____39____ If something is annoying you in your day-to-day life, you had better address these things and keep them from dragging you down further.
____40____ When you’re getting started, don’t focus too much on the end result or on the most difficult things to change. Start with the easiest things to change and work your way up from there. Making small amounts of progress can help improve your motivation and inspire you to keep going.
A. It’s nothing but an excuse.
B. This couldn’t be further from the truth!
C. Fixing what bothers you is also necessary.
D. This leaves more space for you to boost productivity.
E. But doing so has given me a life I genuinely love living.
F. So you can make space for what’s most important to you.
G. Just start simple and realize becoming a minimalist is a journey.

Wang Yifan, a 16-year-old from Chengdu, had always pictured the United States as a land of skyscrapers, endless highways, and smiling faces. When his exchange program placed him at a high school in a small town in Oregon for ten months, he tried hard to hide his disappointment — no skyscrapers, only endless pine trees and rain. Still, he told himself that adventure could bloom anywhere.
From the first day, however, the gaps felt wider than the Pacific he had just crossed. His host family, though friendly, chatted away in slang he couldn’t catch. At school, he couldn’t get used to the loud slam of lockers, and the sour cheese smell in the cafeteria only sharpened his longing for Sichuan peppercorns.
One Monday morning, when Mr. Brown asked him to read a short paragraph aloud in history class,he came across the word “castle” and pronounced every letter, which sent a ripple of giggles through the classroom and left his ears burning.
That afternoon his literature teacher Ms. Carter announced the annual Story Slam: each contestant would tell a five-minute true story onstage the following Friday and the one who moved the crowd most would skip the literature final exam. Yifan’s first instinct was to withdraw — the laughter in history class still rang in his ears.
But that night, the thought of escaping the three-hour final exam stirred something in him. A story surfaced: the first time he and Grandpa leaned over a tiny pot of crimson oil fishing tofu out of the steaming soup, laughing between hot bites. Then he typed, trimmed, and polished it until it was Slam-ready.
However, the next morning he hesitated at the sign-up sheet. Mary, his only new friend, came over, patted his shoulder and whispered, “Tell the hot-pot story and I’ll help you practice after school.” Yifan felt the warmth that chili once sparked in his chest. He picked up the pen.
注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
On Story Slam Day, Yifan was the last storyteller.

第二节(满分25分)
【57题答案】
【答案】
On Story Slam Day, Yifan was the last storyteller. He walked onto the stage, with his heart pounding in his chest. Just at that moment, he saw Mary giving him encouraging waves, so he calmed down immediately, took a deep breath and began his hot-pot story. Lost in the memory of happily fishing tofu from the bubbling pot with his lovely grandfather, he spoke confidently and smoothly, with his fear of mispronunciation and being laughed at gone. After what seemed like an eternity, Yifan finished his story to thunderous applause and won the golden chance to skip the literature final exam, a surge of delight mingled with gratitude washing over him.
Unexpectedly, Yifan’s winning story made the class hungry for more than hot-pot. Their curiosity drifted from hot-pot’s rising steam to tai chi’s flowing grace, then to calligraphy’s dancing ink. Thus, Yifan patiently explained these cultural elements and demonstrated their beauty to his eager classmates, with all his disappointment and unease over the past days gradually giving way to warmth and acceptance. It dawned on him that it wasn’t the skyscrapers or the highways that defined America, but the people genuinely willing to listen, feel, share and care. Relieved and proud, he was even more firmly convinced that adventure could literally bloom anywhere, even in a quiet town with endless pine trees and rain.
