Elaine Smith, once scared of cows and without any farming background, now leads farm education by welcoming children to her Croston dairy(乳品)farm's education center. After working as a full-time teacher for years, she shifted focus to the farm five years ago, combining her teaching experience with agricultural engagement.
The farm features milking robots and a viewing space big enough for school classes to watch cows being milked anytime. Her teaching experience helped her better connect with children from non-agricultural backgrounds. Aiming to bridge the gap between children and their lack of knowledge about food sources, Elaine emphasizes“a lot of work goes into producing a bottle of milk.”
Elaine also ensures the visits are authentic. “We are a working farm-not a petting zoo,"she states, proud to show what farming is actually like. All sessions link to the national curriculum(课程)or other studying purposes, suitable for children aged 4 and up, even high school students. Her main goal is to equip children with knowledge to make informed food choices and help them recognize that food is produced by a farmer somewhere.
Through a government scheme(方案),Elaine can fund 25 school visits per year, but that is not enough. She also notes the over-200-page national curriculum has only one sentence on food for a learning stage, “Understand where food comes from." She hopes to give schools a place to come and do that.
Elaine has achieved a lot through the education center, even appearing on TV and visiting Downing Street with children to showcase food and farming. Yet, what brings her most joy is seeing children who have never seen grass run and laugh in the fields for the first time. Elaine Smith has made it her mission to excite children about the world of farming.
24. What do we know about Elaine Smith?
A.She was born in a farming family.
B. She launched a field trip program.
C.She is unwilling to work with cows.
D.She raises money for an education center.
25. What can children do on the farm?
A.Interact with robots. B. Choose their own food.
C. Learn to build a bridge. D. Watch the milking process.
26. What does the underlined word "authentic" in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Real. B.Adventurous. C.Engaging. D.Helpful.
27.How does Elaine Smith find her work?
A.Meaningful and profitable. B.Fruitful but unrecognized.
C. Instructive and rewarding. D.Challenging but interesting.

As the world's thirst for coffee shows no signs of slowing down, widely used practices to increase crop production have become self-defeating, warns the nonprofit group Coffee Watch. In Brazil, the world's largest coffee producer, expanding coffee farms are causing serious deforestation, which in turn makes coffee harder to grow.
According to a recent report, over 1,200 square miles of forest were cleared for growing coffee in Brazil's coffee-growing regions between 2001 and 2023. In total, more than 42,000 square miles of forest have been lost in these areas, including land cleared directly for farming and indirectly for roads and infrastructure(基础设施).While coffee is not the main driver of deforestation in Brazil-cattle ranching(放牧)has a larger impact-its role has been overlooked. Deforestation reduces rainfall in tropical rainforests, since trees absorb and release moisture(湿气),forming clouds and rain.Cutting them down disturbs this cycle, causing droughts that threaten coffee crops.
"When you kill the forest, you're also killing the rains-exactly what your crop needs,”Higonnet, founder of Coffee Watch, explained. Even those unconcerned about climate change should worry about the future of coffee, she added. In recent years,Brazil's key coffee regions have repeatedly experienced rainfall shortages.
Aaron Davis, a coffee researcher at Kew Gardens, noted that farmers are expanding their farms to meet increasing demand. "To produce coffee, you need land. Simple as that," he said. He called the report "timely and useful" for starting conversations on coffee's environmental impact. Although Brazil's current government has made progress in fighting deforestation, more action is needed. He hopes coffee companies will stop buying beans from deforested land.
Sustainable methods, such as planting shade trees and diversifying crops, exist but often produce lower yields than industrial farming. Most Brazilian growers have not adopted such practices. Davis emphasized that farmers who adopt sustainability should be rewarded, and consumers also share responsibility. For coffee drinkers, he advised,“There needs to be an awareness and a mindset shift around the implications of purchasing products like coffee."
28.What is warned by Coffee Watch?
A.Coffee supply may fall short.
B. Coffee farms are losing profits.
C. Coffee consumption is slowing down.
D.Coffee production is too concentrated.
29. What is the main cause of deforestation in Brazil?
A.Coffee farming. B.Climate change.
C.Cattle ranching. D.Road construction.
30.How does deforestation affect coffee production according to HIigonnet?
A. By lowering crop diversity.
B. By degrading the quality of soil.
C. By reducing the area of coffee farms.
D.By causing unfavorable weather conditions.
31.What does Aaron Davis advise coffee firms to do?
A.Stop deforestation. B. Buy beans wisely.
C. Adopt shade trees. D.Reward small farmers.

As summer heat becomes increasingly dangerous, the high energy consumption and environmental cost of air conditioning have led researchers to explore passive cooling solutions. A team at Columbia University has developed an innovative wall design that offers a promising, electricity-free way to keep buildings cool.
The Columbia group, led by Qilong Cheng, designed pleated(褶皱的)walls that can be attached tothe outside of conventional buildings. Each section of the pleated wall is angled differently-half facing upward and half downward-and coated with different materials to maximize cooling.
A key insight behind the design is that the ground is often significantly hotter than the air in summer. While flat walls can reflect some sunlight, they also absorb heat from the ground. The Columbia team's pleated design addresses this by using a highly reflective mylar film(聚酯膜)on downward-facing areas to block ground heat, while the upward-facing sections are coated with a clear silicone polymer(硅酮聚合物)that helps release heat.
To test the concept, the researchers built a small-scale model using a pleated frame attached to a plastic wall. They compared its performance against a traditional flat wall over a 24-hour period in New Jersey. On average, the pleated wall was 2.3℃ cooler, with a peak difference of 3.1℃. Computer simulations(模拟)indicated that indoor temperatures could also be reduced by about 2.3℃, a meaningful improvement for occupant comfort and energy savings.
That may not sound like much. In fact, though, this is “a significant improvement”,notes Xiaojie Liu, a mechanical engineer at Purdue University, who was not a member of the research team. "In passive cooling for buildings," she notes,“even a few degrees of indoor-temperature reduction can improve comfort.”
This approach can also save energy. The cooling effect achieved equals30-67 watts per square meter of the cooling capacity provided by air conditioners. This design serves as an example of how passive cooling can significantly help create a comfortable temperature inside buildings.
32.Why are summer heat and air conditioning mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To highlight the significance of the research.
B. To explain the consequence of climate change.
C. To introduce a discussion about energy saving.
D.To get the readers interested in an architectural style.
33.What's the function of the downward-facing part of the pleated wall?
A.To reflect sunlight into space.
B. To protect the outside of the building.
C. To absorb the heat inside the building.
D.To prevent ground energy heating the wall.
34.What's Xiaojie Liu's attitude towards the pleated wall?
A.Doubtful. B.Approving. C.Cautious. D.Dismissive.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Pleated Walls: Passive Cooling
B. Summer Heat: A Big Problem
C.Wall Materials: New Research
D.Cooling Solutions: Energy Saving

With so much information flying around on the Internet, it's easy to come across stuff that just isn't true. How many times have you seen a shocking headline or a surprising “fact” online, only to find out later it wasn't quite right? 36
Misinformation might look convincing at first glance. This can lead to all sorts of problems, like arguments, distrust, and even poor decision-making, especially during emergencies. 37 You might panic and make unnecessary preparations, or worse, ignore real warnings from trusted sources.
But how do you know if a source is reliable? It's essential to look for sources that are well-known and respected, like academic institutions, government websites, or reputable news outlets. 38 If the source seems biased or sensational(耸人听闻的),be careful.Even Al-generated content can't be fullytrusted. While AI can be useful for summarizing information, it's not always accurate.
39 Look for other credible sources that report the same facts. If multiple trusted sources agree on the same point, it's more likely that the information is accurate.Don't rely on just one source for important decisions.
To avoid misinformation, it's also crucial to be critical of what you read. Ask yourself whether the information seems too sensational or emotional. 40 If you come across information that seems false or misleading, take the time to verify(核实)it using trusted sources. If it turns out to be unreal, report it to help others avoid misinformation.
A. The Internet has become a huge part of our lives.
B. Cross-checking is commonly used to check information.
C. It's recommended to use AI tools to identify misinformation.
D. Always look for evidence before believing or sharing content.
E.Such misinformation in our daily life can really mess with our heads.
F. Imagine seeing a false news report about a dangerous storm heading your way.
G.Also, check if the source provides clear citations and if the author has expertise in the field.

In our house, every week unfolded as a predictable dinner cycle. My mom, wonderful as she was, had exactly seven recipes on repeat, each assigned to a day of the week. We had Meatloaf(烘肉卷)Monday, Tuna Tuesday, and so on. It was reliable, but for my eleven-year-old appetite, it was endlessly boring.
One particular Meatloaf Monday, a piece of meatloaf landed on my plate next to some vegetables. My mood was already sour from a bad day at school."Meatloaf?Again?” I complained, pushing my plate away. My younger sister, Jeanie, immediately copied my behavior. “Yeah, again!” My dad put down his fork. “Malia, that's enough.Your mom works hard to put dinner on the table. You should be more appreciative and be a good example to your sister."
I couldn't stop myself. “But it's always the same! Sarah's mom makes amazing dinner, and they havedifferent dishes all the time. Our food is ... boring." The words hung in the air. My mom didn't say anything, but her expression was obviously unpleasant, making me feel kind of guilty.
The following week, I was sitting in our school's brand-new kitchen classroom.Everything-the tables, the stove, the pots and pans-shone. Our teacher taught us to make simple but delicious spaghetti(意大利面). Following the teacher's step-by-step directions, I cut up the vegetables and herbs before I heated some oil in a pot and put in the onions. At the teacher's another instruction, I then added the tomatoes, peppers and garlic. As I stirred(搅动)the sauce, the teacher stepped in and seasoned it with herbs and salt. Breathing in the rich smell of tomatoes and herbs, I feIt a sense of excitement. All of this seemed easy and maybe I could do it at home.
That weekend, I announced my plan to coo dinner. My mom looked hesitant but agreed.
