I remember when I started telling people about my upcoming solo (独自的) travel to Mongolia, I was met with surprise and often confusion. My manager at the time gave me a funny look and warned me against going there. I didn’t panic. I’d done my research. Mongolia wasn’t as dangerous as people thought — in fact, it’s far safer than a lot of more frequented countries, like South America.
The thing about Mongolia is… no one has been there. I don’t know a single other person in my life who has been there. Except for the friends I made while I was there.
That’s the thing about solo travel — you don’t technically have to do it alone. Since Mongolia held some risks to it and is considered one of the most remote regions in the world, I decided to join a small-group tour.
I admit I was a little nervous. Looking up past trips on this company’s website, it looked like it was a whole bunch of couples that frequented these tours. I started picturing six couples, enjoying a Mongolian sunset… and then little old me. Just off to the side, enjoying it on my own.
When I arrived in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, and met the rest of the tour, I was both surprised and thrilled to realise that, of the ten people on tour, there was only one pair. Everybody else was there on their own. And instead of sitting off to the side like I’d feared, I’d been tent-paired with a lovely young American girl called Annie. On what other occasions might I have met her if not for this solo trip? The decision to travel solo, to not let the fact that I didn’t have a travel companion stop me, was what brought us together.
And that’s the beauty of travelling solo. When I’m alone, I’m more likely to branch out and talk to the locals and strangers, even if there’s a language barrier. And, in my experience, most people are good people. Start up a conversation, ask questions, and be curious. Most importantly: don’t be a tourist. Be a traveller.
4. What does the author say about Mongolia?
A. It is hardly accessible. B. It is suitable for solo travel.
C. It is a popular destination. D. It is safer than people think.
5. Why was the author nervous about the small-group tour?
A. She feared being left out. B. She feared being too old to bond.
C. She was unsure of the risks ahead. D. She was unfamiliar with such tours.
6. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Annie?
A. To illustrate a benefit of solo travel. B. To show the friendliness of the small-group.
C. To stress the growing popularity of solo travel. D. To explain the importance of cooperation in travel.
7. According to the author, what is most attractive about solo travel?
A. The thrill of self-discovery. B. The freedom of being alone.
C. The authentic engagement with others. D. The improvement of conversation skills.

The arm bones of women who lived 7,000 years ago show a surprising level of strength--even higher than today's professional athletes. That's according to a first-ever study comparing prehistoric(史前的) bones to those of living people. The finding suggests a revision of history- the everyday lives of prehistoric women were filled with hard labor, rather than just sitting at home doing lighter tasks while the men struggled and fought for life.
“Before the study, there are no clear records describing how our ancient ancestors lived. It can be easy to forget that bone is a living tissue, one that responds to the difficulties we put our bodies through,” said lead author Alison Macintosh. “Physical force and muscle activity both put pressure on the bone. The bone reacts by changing in shape, thickness and other aspects over time.”
Previous studies only compared female bones to contemporary male bones, the researchers said-and that's a problem, because the response of male bones to stress and change is much bigger than that of women. For instance, as humans moved from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle constantly on the move to a more settled agrarian(农耕的) one, changes can be observed in the structure of the shinbone(胫骨)- and these changes were much more evident in men.
However, a comparison of the bones of prehistoric women to the bones of living female athletes can help us work out a more accurate picture of what those prehistoric women were doing. "By analyzing the bones of living people and comparing them to the ancient bones, we can start to explain the kinds of labor our ancestors were reforming, Macintosh said. What they found was that women's leg strength hasn't changed a great deal, but their arms used to be very powerful. Prehistoric women, the researchers found, had arm strength 11-16 percent stronger than those of modern rowers(桨手), and 30 percent stronger than those of non-athletes.
8. What does the study tell about prehistoric women?
A. They were stronger than men. B. They had lighter bones than men.
C. They did tough tasks as the men. D. They spent most time staying at home.
9. What problem did previous studies on prehistoric bones have?
A. They lacked enough comparison. B. They only studied men' s bones.
C. They focused little on bones. D. They ignored the lifestyles.
10. What does the underlined word "that" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Bones’ structure. B. Bones' thickness.
C. Bones’ response to stress. D. Bones’ stress from hard labor.
11. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. It's still hard to explain our ancestors' lifestyle.
B. Prehistoric women went through much suffering.
C. Women's arms have become much stronger over time.
D. Prehistoric women are stronger than contemporary females.

AI technology has long been able to recognize patterns in music preferences and create personalized playlists. Now, a new AI system has taken this a step further by analyzing how people listen to music and identifying their unique “listening styles”. This advancement changes how music streaming services tailor playlists to individual users, making them more enjoyable.
Music recommendation algorithms (算法) have been highly effective at suggesting new songs and artists. But Dr. Emily Carter, a music data scientist at the University of Music and Technology, notes that these algorithms often use a one-size-fits-all approach that doesn’t record the slight differences of individual listening behavior. To better understand and satisfy individual preferences, researchers need to analyze each user’s unique listening patterns.
To develop and train their AI, the researchers collected data from over 50 million listening sessions and fed it into a neural network. They tested the system by seeing how well it could distinguish between different users’ listening habits. The system was given 100 listening sessions from each of about 3,000 known users and 100 new sessions from an unknown user. The AI looked for the best match and identified the unknown user 86% of the time, according to a study presented at the International Society for Music Information Retrieval (ISMIR).“We were quite surprised by the accuracy,” says Alex Johnson, a doctoral student in Carter’s lab and the lead author of the study. A non-AI method was only 28% accurate.
“The work is innovative,” says Dr. Sarah Kim, a music researcher. “Personalized music experiences could transform how we interact with music platforms.”
The researchers are aware of the privacy impact of their system, which could potentially identify users based on their listening habits. In theory, similar systems could also analyze other behaviors, such as the types of podcasts (播客) people listen to or the timing of their music consumption. ISMIR organizers found the study impressive but questionable, and accepted it on condition that the researchers detail the privacy risks. Carter says they have decided, for now, not to release the software publicly.
12. What advancement of AI is mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. Protecting people’s privacy.
B. Recognizing music patterns.
C. Tailoring personalized playlists.
D. Improving music streaming quality.
13 What does Carter say about the music recommendation algorithms?
A They consider listening styles.
B They renew networks constantly.
C. They recommend popular songs.
D. They ignore individual preferences.
14. What is the main concern about the new AI system?
A. Its technical weaknesses in analyzing data.
B. Its inability to distinguish between users’ habits.
C. Its limited accuracy compared to non-AI methods.
D. Its potential privacy risk from tracking listening habits.
15. How do ISMIR organizers feel about the new AI system study?
A Careful. B. Disappointed. C. Favorable. D. Uninterested.

It was a sunny Saturday afternoon when a family of four decided to explore the woods near their home. With their camping equipment, they embarked on a much-anticipated trip in the nearby woods, full of excitement.
Upon arrival, the parents set up the tent while their two children, Max and Emma, wandered around and looked for fun. They were especially thrilled, laughter echoing through the woods. Max, the big brother, proposed to go deeper into the woods and explore more. Emma followed.
As they walked along the narrow path, chatting and laughing, they suddenly heard a strange noise coming from a thick bush. Feeling a little bit scared, Emma came closer to her brother. Then, they noticed another sound. Even with the scare and nervousness, curiosity got the better of them. They carefully approached the source of that sound.
To their big surprise, they found a small, injured fox lying there, making some heartbroken sounds. Taking a closer look, Max found that one of her legs was bleeding, and she looked weak and scared. Emma’ s heart ached at the sight of the poor creature. “We can’t just leave her here. Let’s do something,” she begged, looking determined. Max hesitated for a while and nodded in agreement.
Emma suggested coming back to the camping site and called their parents for help. But they worried the fox could be attacked by other bigger animals. Then Max decided to take the fox back. They knew they had to be extremely careful, not scaring the fox and not causing further injury.
Slowly, Max made his first attempt. He took off his coat and tried to gently place it over the fox. The fox, sensing Max’s approach, struggled to run away but failed due to her bleeding leg. Max did another try. This time, he succeeded. He covered the fox carefully with his coat. The fox still whined(哀鸣) sadly, but didn’t run away. With great care, they lifted the fox and carried her back.

7. According to the author what is most attractive about solo travel?
A. The thrill of self-discovery. B. The freedom of being alone.
C. The authentic engagement with others. D. The improvement of conversation skills.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. A 7. C

C Bones’ response to stress.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. C 11. D

13. What does Carter say about the music recommendation algorithms?
A. They consider listening styles.
B. They renew networks constantly.
A. Careful. B. Disappointed. C. Favorable. D. Uninterested.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. D 15. A

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Once they arrived, they quickly called their parents. Their parents rushed over, shocked but impressed by their children’s kindness. The father carefully examined the fox’s wound and said they needed to clean and bandage it immediately. The mother fetched the first-aid kit. They worked together gently. Max and Emma watched nervously, hoping the fox would be okay. After the treatment, they made a small, warm nest for the fox near the tent. Over the next few days, they took turns looking after her, feeding her small pieces of food and fresh water. The fox gradually got used to them and stopped being so scared.
A few days later, the fox’s leg was fully healed. Max and Emma knew it was time to let her go back to her natural habitat. They felt a bit sad but also happy for the fox. They carried her to the place where they had found her. Gently, they put the fox down. The fox looked at them for a moment as if saying thank you, then ran into the woods. Max and Emma watched until she disappeared. They realized that this experience not only taught them to be kind to animals but also gave them a deeper understanding of the importance of co-existing with nature.
