As a child, I devoted myself to books. When exams came, I revised for hours without break. But in recent years, I’ve watched that capacity for intense concentration fade into infinite phone scrolling (滚动). My attention span contracts like a candle in the wind. I want to restore that mental flexibility.
So, about a year ago, I made a small promise: every time I encountered a word I didn’t know, I’d look it up and write it down. Nothing complicated, just a running list kept, ironically, on my phone. Each week, I’d review to fix words into my memory. The list now covers almost 20 pages, and this tiny routine has been quietly transformative. Each time I look up, record and review a word, I feel a faint stretch, as though some neglected part of my brain is flexing again.
It’s not an easy habit to keep up, often impractical. If I’m reading on the subway, I have to stop mid-paragraph, pull out my phone and type “millenarianism” into my Google document while trying not to knock into strangers. It can slow my reading to a maddening pace. And then there’s the revising, dutifully scrolling through my growing word-collection like preparing a vocabulary test. Realistically, I apply maybe 5% of these words into my everyday speech. Most remain like museum pieces-admired but rarely handled.
Still, it’s made my mind sharper. I find myself reaching less often for the same tired adjectives, and more often for something precise. Few things are more satisfying than unearthing the exact word you seek.
In an age when our devices absorb our attention with merciless efficiency, it feels unconventional to use mine as a tool for slow thinking. And it’s given me back something I feared I’d lost—the pleasure of exercising a mind that, after years of mindless scrolling, is finally waking up again.
4. Why did the author begin noting down unfamiliar words?
A. To prepare for a vocabulary test. B. To collect rare words for daily use.
C. To regain the ability to focus deeply. D. To replace phone use with useful tasks.
5. What can we know about the author’s word-recording habit?
A. It requires his consistent effort. B. It speeds up his reading process.
C. It improves his everyday speech. D. It enables him to use most words.
6. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A. Common adjectives might be misused. B. Using precise words fulfills the author.
C. Poor vocabulary does harm to thinking. D. The author no longer uses simple adjectives.
7. What does the underlined word “mine” refer to in the last paragraph?
A. The author’s attention. B. The author’s time. C. The author’s vocabulary. D. The author’s phone.

Most science fiction books paint grand visions of the future — monumental space battles, cruel and disordered worlds, or technological utopias (乌托邦). Douglas Adams took a different route. Instead of idealizing space travel, he turned it into a bureaucratic (官僚主义的) nightmare. Rather than having noble heroes, he gave us a confused Englishman in a bathrobe. Instead of deep philosophical insights, he gave us a joke about the number 42 being the answer to everything.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy opens by describing Earth as an “insignificant little blue-green planet”. Adams prepares readers to separate themselves from their attachments to their own world. Adams urges readers to look at human existence objectively. In doing this, he is able to illustrate the insignificance of things like money, to which humans otherwise attach great meaning. What’s more, he suggests that humans are fundamentally unhappy and that the pursuit to ease this discontentment is a key part of life on Earth. Unfortunately, though, it’s clear that humans are incompetent at identifying the true source of their unhappiness, something that surely intensifies their lack of contentment.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a book that refuses to be boxed into one genre. It’s science fiction, but it’s also satire. It’s full of deep ideas but never takes itself seriously. It’s absurd (荒谬的), yet surprisingly insightful. Adams uses deadly serious delivery to explain humanity’s struggle to find meaning in life. Still, he emphasizes the extent to which humans long to find happiness in life, framing the species as a group who constantly pursues knowledge about the nature of its own existence.
Whether you’re a sci-fi fan or not, this book is a must-read. It makes you laugh out loud while weaving in wisdom, proving that life’s absurdity is part of its charm. As its cover advises: “DON’T PANIC” — just dive into this funny, smart, and endlessly memorable adventure.
8. How is Douglas Adams’ writing different from most sci-fi books?
A. It describes grand space battles. B. It takes noble spirit as its theme.
C. It includes deep philosophical ideas. D. It uses absurd humor for sci-fi elements.
9. Why does Douglas Adams describe Earth as “insignificant”?
A. To help readers view human life objectively. B. To prove money is meaningless to humans.
C. To show humans can’t escape unhappiness. D. To stress Earth is small in the universe.
10. What does paragraph 3 try to illustrate?
A. The book’s oddity and absurdity. B. The book’s unique feature and theme.
C. Douglas Adams’ philosophical insights. D. The popular characters in the book.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To compare Adams’ works with others. B. To analyze the genre of a book.
C. To explain features of science fiction. D. To recommend a science fiction.
D
“We are one step closer to a greener and climate-friendlier food production.” That is the conclusion reached by Kasper Røjkjæ Andersen and Simona Radutoiu, professors of molecular (分子的) biology at Aarhus University. Their new research highlights an important biological clue that could help reduce agriculture’s heavy reliance on artificial fertilizer.
Plants require nitrogen (氮) to grow, and most crop species can obtain it only through fertilizer. Nevertheless, a small group of plants, including peas, clover, and beans, can grow without added nitrogen. Scientists worldwide are working to understand the genetic and molecular basis of this natural nitrogen-fixing ability. The hope is that this feature could eventually be introduced into major crops so that they could supply their own nitrogen. This shift would reduce the need for artificial fertilizer, which currently represents about two percent of global energy consumption and produces significant carbon dioxide.
Plants rely on the root protein serving as a “receptor” to sense chemical signals in the soil. Researchers have now found that small receptor changes can cause the plants to temporarily stop defending themselves and enter a cooperative relationship, known as symbiosis, with nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
The team identified a small region in the receptor protein that they named Symbiosis Determinant 1. This region functions like a switch that controls which internal message the plant receives. By modifying only two amino acids (氨基酸) within this switch, the researchers changed a receptor that normally activates defense so that it initiated symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria instead.
In laboratory experiments, the researchers successfully engineered this change in the plant Lotus japonicus and then confirmed it in barley. The long-term potential of this change is significant. “But we have to find the other essential keys first,” Radutoiu notes. “Only very few crops can perform symbiosis today. If we can extend that to widely used crops, it can really make a big difference on how much nitrogen needs to be used.”
12. What is the main expected benefit of the research?
A. To stop the use of artificial fertilizer. B. To understand how most crop species grow.
C. To make food production more eco-friendly. D. To increase the quality of nitrogen-fixing plants.
13. How did researchers make plants initiate symbiosis?
A. By balancing the soil conditions. B. By removing a key switch region.
C. By alarming plants’ defense system. D. By making a change in the receptor.
14. What is the future focus of the research?
A. Extending symbiosis to more crops. B. Testing the essential keys.
C. Predicting the long-term potential. D. Increasing nitrogen use.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Crops’ Unique Growth Boosts Food Production
B. Artificial Fertilizer Harms Agriculture Development
C Tiny Genetic Change Enables Crops to Self-Fertilize
D. Nitrogen-fixing Bacteria Influences Energy Consumption

Most of us are pretty good at celebrating our big wins: moving house, getting married, or passing a driving test. But what about all the small wins along the way? ___16___ Taking notes of these wins keeps you motivated. So, here are four practical ways to celebrate your small wins.
Pause and slow down.
When you achieve a small win, it can be tempting to move on with the next task on your to-do list or display your progress. Why not practise pausing and slowing down? ___17___ It can in turn strengthen positive feelings and remind you that progress, however small, still counts.
Celebrate wins with understanding companions.
Sometimes, the small wins we’re proud of don’t get the recognition they deserve. Whether it’s nailing a tough presentation, finishing a challenging assignment, or simply sticking to a daily routine, these moments feel more meaningful when shared with someone who gets it. ___18___
Create a “win” wall
___19___ For example, if you’re training for a marathon, which demands planning, commitment and regular weekly runs. Write down the date and details of every run on a whiteboard or large wall sheet. You could even buy running-themed stickers and get the thrill of popping one on your win wall after every run!
___20___
Take a photo, write a poem, or record a voice note to document your feelings when you reach your milestone. These snapshots become reminders on harder days and proof that progress is happening. Over time, you’ll build a collection of moments showing how far you’ve come.

B. Remind yourself of your daily wins.
C. After all, good interpersonal relationships make you relaxed.
D. So go to a trusted friend and turn a quiet win into shared joy.

I’d always thought of my dad as a quiet, modest man — good with his hands, yes, but not one to share his feelings easily. So, when he called on a mild afternoon asking if I’d help him fix the porch steps at his house, I agreed without hesitation. I figured it would be a simple weekend project, a chance to spend some time together without much conversation as usual. But what I never expected was that it would change how I saw him — and myself — forever.
Under the weathered old porch, the steps were rotting, the wood soft and cracked. “We’ll need to replace the whole stringer (楼梯侧梁),” Dad said, bending down to examine the damage carefully and pointing to the structural beam underneath. I nodded, pretending I knew what a stringer was. As we worked, side by side in the warm spring sun, he told me stories I’d never heard before: about how he’d built his first house with his own two hands after returning from Vietnam, how he’d worked three jobs to put my sister and me through college, how he’d cried for hours after my mom passed away, even though he’d tried to hide it from us.
“I never wanted you girls to see me weak,” he said, his voice quiet as he hammered a nail into place. “But now I realize. that’s not strength. Strength is letting people see you, all of you.”
I thought about all the times I’d dismissed my dad’s silence as disinterest, when really it was fear-fear of fragility, fear of not being enough. As we finished the steps, I turned to him, my throat feeling a little tight with regret, “Dad, I’m sorry I never took the time to ask about all this before.”
He smiled, a rare, warm smile crinkling his eyes. “It’s never too late, kiddo. That’s life’s beauty — we can always learn something new, even about the people we love most.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I couldn’t wait to share the weekend’s experience with my sister.

C. Tiny Genetic Change Enables Crops to Self-Fertilize
D. Nitrogen-fixing Bacteria Influences Energy Consumption
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. C

Create a “win” wall.

1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】 I couldn’t wait to share the weekend’s experience with my sister. That evening, I called her and poured out everything — dad’s stories about building the house, working three jobs to support us, and crying secretly after mom left. I told her how I’d misunderstood his silence for years and felt regretful. My sister was moved to tears, saying she also remembered dad’s quiet care but never dared to ask more. She added that dad had always hidden his love in actions, not words, and we both agreed we should spend more time with him.
Inspired by my sister, I decided to prepare a special surprise for dad. The next weekend, I invited my sister to dad’s house early. We cooked his favorite dishes, cleaned the porch, and hung photos of our family — including those of mom and dad when they were young. When dad came back, he was shocked to see the warm scene. We hugged him tightly, saying we loved him. Dad’s eyes were filled with tears of joy. That night, we chatted happily around the table, and for the first time, I felt our family was more connected than ever. I knew this was the best way to repay his silent love.
