Have you ever read Little Women by US writer Louisa May Alcott? The classic has been changed into plays, films and television programs many times because of its popularity since it came out in 1868. It tells a story of a mother raising her four daughters, while their dad is away fighting a war. Meg, the eldest, wants to live a better life very much. Jo, the second-born, wants nothing more than to be a writer. Beth is a sweet girl who loves music and brings joy to others. The youngest daughter, Amy, dreams of being an artist. After reading Little Women, I have a feeling of warmth and kindness from the family.
Take the following scene as an example.
It was near Christmas. The four girls were talking about Christmas gifts meanwhile (同时) they were waiting for their mother. At six o’clock, Beth put a pair of slippers (拖鞋) by the fire to warm and Meg lit the lamp (灯). Amy got out of the comfortable chair, and Jo forgot how tired she was and held the slippers closer to the fire.
“These are old,” she said. “Mother needs a new pair.”
“I’ll get her some with my dollar,” said Beth.
“No, I shall!” cried Amy.
“I’m the oldest—” began Meg.
“I’m the man of the family now. Father is away, and I shall buy them,” said Jo.
“Let’s each get her something and not get anything for ourselves,” said Beth.
“That’s a kind idea!” said Jo. “What shall we get?”
Everyone thought for a moment, then Meg said, “I’ll give her a nice pair of gloves.”
“The best army slippers,” said Jo.
“Some handkerchiefs (手帕)”, said Beth.
“A little bottle of perfume (香水),” said Amy, “It won’t cost much, so I’ll have some money left to buy something for me.”
“We’ll let Mother think we’re getting things for ourselves, and surprise her,” said Jo.
1.When did Little Women come out?
2.Who is the third-born girl in the family?
3.Where did the four girls’ father go?
4.Why would Jo buy her mother army slippers?
5.What do you think of the four girls? Give your reason.
Huck took the canoe and paddled across the river to the town. Very soon he met a woman and they started talking. She told him that her husband and another man were looking for a runaway slave (奴隶).
“They’re going to Jackson’s Island tonight to catch him.” she said.
This wasn’t good news for Jim. He hurried back to the cave to tell him.
“Jim! They know you’re here. They’re coming to get you tonight. We must leave Now!”
They put all their things, including the canoe, on the big raft and set off down the river for the town of Cairo, where the Mississippi and the Ohio rivers meet.
They never got to Cairo. They ran into a thick fog on the river one night and they couldn’t see a yard in front of them. The next day it cleared but there was no sight of a town that looked like Cairo.
“Maybe we missed it in the fog.” Jim said.
So they continued drifting down the river because the raft couldn’t sail back up the river against the current.
1.How did Huck get to the town?
2.Who did Huck meet in the town?
3.What do you think of Huck?
One of my favorite books is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (《汤姆•索亚历险记》) by Mark Twain. The story happens in a town in the US. It tells some exciting stories about a boy who has many adventures (冒险) . Tom, the hero of the book, lives with his aunt. He does not like people telling him what to do, so he always gets into trouble. One day, Tom discovers (发现) the secret of a bad man named Injun Joe, so the bad man is looking for him.
Tom first runs away to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River. Later, he runs into a cave (山洞) with a friend. They find Injun Joe’s treasure box and arrive home safely with it.
My favorite part of the book is when Tom and his friend start their adventures on the island in the Mississippi River. At first, they are happy. But hearing that everyone thinks they are dead, they feel very sorry. So they come back home. When they suddenly appear, the family and neighbors are surprised to see them, but very happy to find that they are alive.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a great book. First of all, it tells a wonderful adventure story. It also tells how young people grow, how people love each other and how bad people pay for their actions. It is written in everyday English. Today, it is still read and loved by people all over the world and is thought to be one of the greatest American stories.

The Adventures of Pinocchio, also known as Pinocchio, is a cartoon for children by C. Collodi. It is about the adventures of Pinocchio and his father, a poor woodcarver (穷木匠) named Geppetto.
In the story, the poor man Geppetto makes a puppet (木偶) for a better life. He gives the puppet the name Pinocchio. Pinocchio is not nice to this old man at first. After Geppetto makes Pinocchio’s feet, Pinocchio gets out of the door and runs away into the town. Geppetto has to go to the police office when he finds Pinocchio. Pinocchio goes back to Geppetto’s home alone. He has no food to eat and asks an old man in the neighbourhood for food. But the old man puts some water on him. He almost gets his feet burnt when he tries to dry himself. Luckily, Pinocchio’s father comes home and makes him new feet.
There are interesting things about Pinocchio. Every time he tells a lie, his nose gets longer. He always wants to be a real boy, and he becomes a real boy in the end.
Pinocchio has important lessons for children. If children don’t listen to their parents, they may face terrible things. If children love and take care of their parents, they will get rewards (奖励). And children should not lie.
1.Who is the writer of the cartoon The Adventures of Pinocchio?
2.What does Geppetto do to make a better life?
3.What happens to Pinocchio every time he tells a lie?
4.What lessons can children learn from Pinocchio?
5.What’s the best title of the passage?
My favourite book Wonder
Title: Wonder
Author (作者): R. J. Palacio
What’s the book about?
The book tells the story of a 10-year-old boy. His name is August. He lives with his parents and sister in New York. August is a common boy in many ways. He likes riding a bike and playing video games. But he was born with facial deformities (面部畸形) and looks very different from others.
August’s first year at school was terrible. Most people were afraid of him and stayed away from him. But he never gave up himself and never lost hope. During that hard time, a girl named Summer reached out to him and wanted to be his friend. That was the first time that he had felt kindness from friends.
Then a surprising thing at a school camp changed everything. People found how brave he was and how hard it was for him to get along with others, and they began to understand him better.
Kindness is the main theme (主题) in Wonder. It helps me learn that a small, simple act of kindness can make a big difference. From this book, I have also learned to face differences in people. Everyone is a special star, always ready to shine.
Reading can truly change what people think about life. So I hope you can find a good book and try to make reading a part of your life.
1.What is the type of the passage?
2.What are August’s hobbies?
3.Why was August’s first year at school terrible?
4.How did Summer show her kindness to August?
5.What does the book Wonder tell us?

Written by E. B.White and first published in 1952, Charlotte’s Web is a classic story set largely on a farm. It is a story of friendship and a celebration of farm life, which is full of warmth and wisdom.
The story takes place on a farm. Eight-year-old Fern Arable is sad when she hears that her father is going to kill the smallest pig. Saying that the pig has a right to life and promising EBWHITE to look after it in their family’s yard, she saves the animal and names him Wilbur. However, fearing his daughter is spending too much time with an animal, Mr Arable sends Wilbur to the nearby farm of Fern’s uncle, Mr Zuckerman.
At first, Wilbur’s lonely and misses Fern. However, he settles in his new home when he makes friends with a spider named Charlotte and other animals. When Wilbur learns that he is going to be killed and served at Christmas dinner, Charlotte comes up with a plan to save him.
Charlotte spins (结网) words of praise like “Some pig” for Wilbur on her web.
This catches the attention of the Zuckermans and their neighbours. They all think Wilbur is special and the thought of killing him becomes unthinkable.
When Wilbur is taken to the country fair, Charlotte goes to continue her work.
She spins new messages. The results draw huge crowds and Charlotte’s plan to save Wilbur’s life pays off.
At the close of the fair, however, Charlotte says goodbye to Wilbur. She is dying. But she entrusts (托付) her friend with her eggs. Heart broken, Wilbur takes the eggs back to the farm and sees that they hatch (孵化). Three of Charlotte’ s “kids” stay with Wilbur and live happily with him on the farm.
While humorous, the novel also contains important lessons. For example, Fern’s caring for Wilbur teaches her responsibility. And she realizes that if she stands up for what she believes in, she can make a difference in the world.

Anne of Green Gables is a favourite book of teenagers all over the world. It came out in 1908. What it teaches us is simple: How to grow up to be a happy and useful person.
Anne is an 11-year-old orphan (孤儿) who arrives in the town of Avonlea, Canada. She helps Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a brother and sister, on their farm.
At first, Matthew and Marilla hope to adopt (收养) a boy, not a thin girl. Will she be of any use on the farm? It seems unlikely. Anne is full of imagination, talkative and easily distracted (分心的). That’s not what is needed on a farm.
And yet, Anne proves (证明) that she can actually be useful. She works really hard. But she doesn’t lose her great sense of fun and this is why readers love the story. She doesn’t become “a good girl”, if “good girl” means knowing only how to work but living unhappily. We see Anne’s love for life everywhere. She knows how to enjoy herself, whether it’s by eating ice cream or trying on a new dress.
Many stories for children are written to tell them how to be good. Usually, it means doing one’s duty (责任) and not having any fun. But that’s not the kind of story Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery wanted to tell. The book gives readers a helping hand rather than try to scare them into being “good” girls and boys.
1.When was the book first printed?
2.Why do the brother and sister dislike Anne at first?
3.How does Anne prove herself on the farm?
4.Who is the writer of the book?
5.What small thing do you think Anne might do to make Matthew and Marilla smile on a boring day on the farm? And why do you think that would work?
The Merchant of Venice is an important early work of Shakespeare, which is a comedy. It was written in about 1596-1597. In the play Shakespeare not only speaks highly of love and friendship, but also mirrors (反映) the social background of that time.
Antonio had a friend named Bassanio who spent money without limit. As a result, he ran out of his property in a short time. Bassanio fell in love with Portia, but he was required to pay a large amount of money. So he went to Antonio for help. Antonio was also a rich Venetian merchant but he didn’t have so much cash. Antonio went to Shylock, a moneylender, for help. Having been scolded (责备) by Antonio for being cruel and greedy, Shylock hated him. However, he agreed to lend him the money on condition that Antonio would allow him to take a pound of his flesh if he could not repay him within three months. At last Antonio agreed to the contract (契约). With the money Antonio had borrowed from Shylock, Bassanio married Portia, but unluckily, Antonio lost all his ships at sea. He was not able to pay Shylock back, and the Jew went to the court of Venice to carry out his deal.
To save Antonio’s life, Portia pretended to be a famous lawyer. According to the contract, she agreed to Shylock’s request, but said he could only cut a pound of Antonio’s meat, no more and no less. At the same time, he couldn’t let any of Antonio’s blood drop. The wise judge also said that according to the law if anyone tried to kill a citizen of Venice, everything he owned should be taken away from him, and half of what he owned would belong to the man he wanted to kill. Shylock said that he would rather die if all his money and goods were taken away. Finally, Antonio gave up his part of Shylock’s money on condition that Shylock should leave the money to his own daughter and her husband upon his death. The cruel moneylender had to agree.
1.What does Shakespeare speak highly of in the play?
2.According to the play, why did Bassanio run out of property?
3.What does the underlined word “him” in the second paragraph refer to?
4.How did Portia save Antonio’s life?
5.What do you think of Portia?
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (《汤姆·索亚历险记》) is a classic. It was written by the famous writer Mark Twain and was published in 1876.
Tom Sawyer, an orphan (孤儿), lives with his aunt in a small town on the Mississippi River. He always has many clever ideas but doesn’t like school. He always likes to run away to fish. Tom has a friend, Huck Finn, who is kind and independent. Together they have great adventures on the Mississippi River, like playing different roles, going to their own funeral (葬礼) and seeing a murder (谋杀). Tom is so brave that he even says the name of the murderer in court (法庭). Finally, he and his friend find a lot of treasure and become very rich.
Tom Sawyer shows people the wonderful parts of childhood. Because of this, the story is really great. It’s full of action, adventure, fun ideas, and friendship. Mark Twain wrote about both real adventures from his childhood and the ones he dreamed of having when he was young.
The book is a little difficult to read at first. But on the whole, the book is an enjoyable read for people of all ages. I really want to introduce this book to anyone looking forward to feeling young again.

2.Who does the writer want to introduce the book to? (不超过10个词)

I saw a man stretched out on the floor. His hands and feet were tied. There were two men standing over him. One held a lantern, the other held a pistol.
The man on the floor kept begging, “Please, I won’t tell anyone!”
Every time he’d say that, the man with the lantern grinned. “Indeed you aren’t!”
The man with the pistol was ready to shoot, but the other man said, “Wait!” They mumbled a few things, and then headed my way.
I scooted out of there quickly as I could and hid behind some boxes. Then the two men stood talking at the deck rail.
“Let’s just put the loot in our boat and head out,” one man said. “It won’t be long before this steamboat washes back into the river and sinks. When it does, old Jim Turner in there will drown for sure.”
“But suppose it doesn’t wash back out?” the other man said.
“I guess we can wait a bit to see.”
When they headed back in, I lit out. I was covered in a cold sweat.
“Jim,” I whispered, “there is a gang of murderers yonder. We need to find their boat so we can cut in loose. Then they will be stuck here. The sheriff will be able to find them and take them in. We’ve got to hurry. You look on one side, and I will look on the other.”
“And then what, Huck?”
“What do you think? We will get back on the raft and sail out of here.”
Jim let out a powerful sigh. “We can’t, Huck. There isn’t any raft. It broke loose and sailed off on its own. We are stuck here.”
1.What did the man on the floor keep doing?
2.Did the man with the pistol shoot at last?
3.What was Huck covered in when the two men headed back?
4.What’s wrong with the raft?
5.Do you like Huck? Why?
In the late 19th century in Europe, many people had more money to spend than before. They had better education, so they could read about the world outside of their own countries. They mostly couldn’t have the money for real travel, but they could dream about travel. Surely the fact that people wanted to see the world is one of the reasons why French writer Jules Verne’s great science fiction Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (海底两万里) (1870) was such a success.
The story begins when a sea monster that looks like a whale sinks (击沉) an American boat. The “monster” is causing chaos and spreading fear among sailors and the public. Passengers are too afraid to cross the Atlantic.
They want to kill this mysterious monster because it is endangering human life. The great powers meet in New York and decide to send a ship to deal with the monster. The crew (船员) include two sailors, Ned Land, Professor Aronnax and his servant, Conseil. The ship is the Abraham Lincoln under Captain Farragut, a very good sailor. After chasing at sea for three months, they are almost giving up. Captain Farragut is the only person who still believes in the monster and asks for another three days. It is almost dark at the end of the second day. Ned Land is standing on the deck and shouting, “There it is! There it is!” Everybody rushes to him because he is pointing to the monster. They chase the monster all day, travelling four hundred kilometers, but it does not tire. That night, the ship quietly floats closer and closer, until at last Ned Land can throw his harpoon. It hits the monster, but the ship sinks. All the crew are thrown into the sea.
As we follow their journey, we are left wondering what lies ahead. Will they kill the monster? What secrets will they uncover? The story is full of suspense and excitement, making it a perfect read for students in Grade Nine.
1.Which country does the writer Jules Verne’s come from?
2.Why was Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea a great success?
3.What does the sea monster look like?
4.Which one among the crew is the first person to see the sea monster?

On a sunny September morning, Bobbie, Peter, and Phyllis walked along the railway near their home. The autumn sun made everything look warm and golden. Bobbie was placing small white stones on the ground to spell “HELLO” for the passing trains.
“Look! There’s smoke coming from that old red building!” Phyllis suddenly shouted.
Peter, always the bravest, moved closer carefully and pushed the door open. Inside, they saw something that made their hearts beat fast — a man was sitting on the dirty floor, his left wrist (手腕) locked with a chain to a big iron pipe (钢管)! His face was dirty with black marks like coal dust, and his shirt showed a bleeding cut on his arm.
“Water ... please ... ” the man said weakly. Though he looked poor and tired, Bobbie noticed he spoke like a well-educated man. Quickly, she gave him their water bottle while Phyllis used her hair ribbon (发带) to tie around his wounded arm.
“My name ... is Jim,” the man said. “They stole my important papers ... I need to catch the 11:15 train to London ...” Just then, the loud whistle of a coming train made Peter rush to close the door so nobody outside would hear them.
When Mother arrived with the village policeman later that evening, the building was empty. The broken chain lay on the floor like a dead snake, and the only signs left were footprints. But Bobbie noticed something shiny in the dirt, a gold button with a special design.
That night, Bobbie heard the familiar whistle of the11:15 train passing by. But tonight it sounded different — two short calls instead of one. The train’s yellow lights went through the darkness like fireflies (萤火虫) running along the railway.

Saturday was the day of Becky’s picnic. Becky’s mother prepared the picnic food. No adults went with the children, just some young teachers. They all met at Judge Thatcher’s house and then they went on the ferry together.
They played games at the wooded place where the ferry stopped. Then there was the picnic meal, and finally a visit to some nearby caves. It was quite late when they started back towards the town.
Huck was already on duty watching the tavern. He heard the door closing softly. Two men walked past him, and one had something under his arm. It must be the box! It was too late to call Tom now, so Huck decided to follow them. They went up Cardiff Hill and down the other side into the dark trees. Then they stopped. Huck heard Indian Joe’s voice just in front of him.
‘Widow Douglas has got guests — there are lights on!’
‘Let’s go back,’ said the other man.
‘Go back? I’m going to leave this country forever and this is my last chance to get my revenge (报仇) on her. I’m not interested in her money — you can have it. But her husband jailed me many times for being homeless and whipped me in front of the whole town. He’s dead, but I’ll take revenge on her!’
‘Let’s start now!’
“No, we must wait until the guests have gone and the lights are out.”
Huck listened in horror. Then he walked backwards very carefully until he was a good distance from the two men. Then he ran down the hill until he reached the Welshman’s house. He banged (猛敲) on the door. The old man put his head out of the window.
“What’s all that noise? What do you want?”
‘Let me in — quickly! I’ll tell you everything!’ The door opened and Huck told his story. Three minutes later the old man and his sons were up the hill walking quietly. After a silence there was a sudden explosion of guns and a cry. Huck ran back down the hill as fast as he could.

The men then took his mother by the rope and led her. He didn’t like this; it was like a trap. He followed them. They went down to the river, and made a camp. White Fang was amazed by what he saw the men do. They were the masters of things not alive. Their tent were especially strange and big to him.
White Fang explored the camp. He met a puppy, who was older than him, called Lip-lip. White Fang wanted to be friendly, but Lip-lip suddenly attacked him. They became enemies. White Fang’s mother wanted him to stay with her, but White Fang was curious and soon he was exploring again.
Gray Beaver was doing something important with two sticks and some grass. Women and children carried sticks and branches to him. White Fang saw something like mist (雾状物) coming from the sticks and branches, and then, something bright like the sun appeared, and grew.
White Fang went towards this bright thing with his nose, and touched it with his tongue. Then he jumped into the air, yelping. Gray Beaver laughed, and told everybody, so they all started laughing, too. Kiche started snarling loudly, but she could not get to her cub because of the rope. Poor White Fang sat there crying in the middle of the laughing men. Their laughter hurt him more than the pain.
He went back to his mother and lay down beside her. As night came on he felt sad. He missed the woods and the cave. Here, there were so many people making noise, and all the dogs. The men were always doing something, using their power. They were gods!

【答案】1.In 1908./It came out in 1908./It was first printed in 1908. 2.Because they want to adopt a boy to help them on the farm./Because Anne seems useless on the farm./Because Anne is very imaginative, talkative and easily distracted. 3.She works really hard but she doesn’t lose her great sense of fun. 4.Lucy Maud Montgomery./The Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. 5.I think Anne might pick some pretty wild flowers from the farm and put them in a small jar for Matthew and Marilla. Because the flowers would be a sweet gesture. (合理即可)
