Walking is a basic human activity that’s regarded as a modern workout with different styles. Research has shown that regular walks can bring us many benefits. Whether you want stronger bones, less stress, or slimmer bodies, there’s a walk for that. Here’s how different walking styles meet detailed fitness aims.
Walking is great for your health — and walking backward may be even better. But how much should we walk each day? “Forget about 10,000 steps,” says fitness expert Joey Masri. “While having a goal like this can make walking attractive, it’s key to remember that physical activity is different for everyone. A goal that is too easy for one person might be impossible for another.”
1. How many walking styles are especially women-friendly?
A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 4.
2. Which style of walking values real-world senses?
A. Rucking. B. Interval Walking. C. Power Walking. D. Mindful Nature Walking.
3. What is suggested about walking in the last paragraph?
A. Winners never quit. B. Life lies in movement.
C. What fits you is best. D. Practice makes perfect.

I first visited China when the country began to open up to westerners, and I spent a long time exploring Yunnan back then, so being invited back after so many years feels like a wonderful chance to see just how much has changed here. This visit is nicely unhurried, allowing me to explore on my own as well as with other journalists (记者). Often, press (新闻媒体) trips are so rushed that you hardly see anything — but this time, I feel we’re really getting to experience each place deeply.
Yunnan has changed a lot — far more than I could have ever imagined. Dali and Lijiang, once sleepy little towns without a visitor in sight, are now famous tourist attractions. Back then, both Dali and Lijiang were where people lived and worked. Now, they’re full of tourist shops and hotels. In the past, locals in bright traditional clothes would come into town to shop, shyly turning away from cameras. Now, people rent those same clothes for photos.
The changes are also positive. Food in those days was fairly limited, but now there’s a wide variety. I relish the street food, especially unusual things like crickets (蟋蟀), and also the food in the restaurants, which is equally excellent. Another positive is making local friends who are happy to discuss every part of the country and its culture. My guide, Tammy, is outstanding — she goes out of her way to feed my curiosity. At one point, she even knocked on doors in the backstreets of a village, so I could meet local families and get a look at their lifestyle.
Although I have visited other places in China since the first visit, it is extremely interesting to return to Yunnan in 2025. People are friendly and polite, hotels comfortable and well-run, and the organization perfect. The place is beautiful and well worth exploring.
4. What can we learn about the writer from the first paragraph?
A. He enjoys press trips. B. He often travels to Yunnan.
C. He likes to travel alone. D. He prefers deep exploration.
5. What is the main change in Dali and Lijiang according to paragraph 2?
A. Offering more choices of food. B. Turning into well-known tourist spots.
C. Losing its traditional way of life. D. Behaving more politely towards visitors.
6. What does the underlined word “relish” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Get shocked by. B. Take pleasure in. C. Feel unsure about. D. Focus mainly on.
7. What is the writer’s trip to Yunnan in 2025 like?
A. Tiring but meaningful. B. Inspiring and breathtaking.
C. Rushed but educational. D. Worthwhile and impressive.
C
On a winter night, a snow leopard (雪豹) jumped into Rinchen Lama’s livestock (家畜) in Dolpa, a faraway Himalayan area in western Nepal, killing 37 sheep and goats. Months later, another attack took his horse, leaving him very sad. “We’ve been told protecting snow leopards is important, but for villages like us, they make our life very hard,” Rinchen says, sharing the unhappiness of many local herders (牧民).
Snow leopards, animals in danger, live in high mountain areas across 12 Asian countries. As their wild food gets less due to habitat loss, these top hunters are increasingly targeting livestock. For poor Dolpa herders, the losses are large, equal to $900-$1,050 — almost the same as a local’s yearly income, so herders fight back. A report states that 221-450 snow leopards are killed worldwide each year, and 55% of these killings result from fighting back.
Environmental protector Tshiring Lhamu Lama is dealing with this problem directly supported by groups like the Snow leopard Conservancy and others, she gives out solar-powered lights to stop nighttime leopard attacks and works with local women to build a protective fence to keep leopards out in Dolpa. She also uses stone bases, a design coming from a successful example in an Indian park, where similar structures greatly reduced the number of livestock killings.
In the long run, Tshiring encourages snow leopard tourism, from which host families earn good money. On average, families who host visiting tourists can earn between 65,000 and 103,000 Indian rupees during the annual four-month tourist season. “Local attitudes are changing.” Tshiring says, “Back then, the locals saw me as an enemy. They were the guardians of their livestock, and I was the guardian of the snow leopard. Now we know that we need to protect both — snow leopards for the ecosystem, and livelihoods for the people.”
8. How does the author begin the passage?
A. By giving an example. B. By quoting an expert.
C. By explaining an idea. D. By referring to a study.
9. What does the author try to show by mentioning the numbers in paragraph 2?
A. A fruitless effort. B. An agreeable solution.
C. A serious situation. D. An unavoidable result.
10. How does Tshiring mainly solve the problem of livestock loss?
A. By taking protective measures. B. By working with local women.
C. By using stone bases from India. D. By teaching herders new skills.
11. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Livestock and wildlife can be friends. B. Wildlife should be put in the first place.
C. Tourism is important for the economy. D. Cooperation is better than hard fighting.
D
According to recent scientific reports, tornadoes, wildfires and sea level rise are all on a list of dangers made worse by climate change. Understanding how damaging these disasters will become, when they will happen, and what areas are likely to suffer the most damage is very important for effective disaster preparation. To address this urgent need, Columbia climate scientists at the National Center for disaster preparedness (NCDP) have led a project to develop a tool, which can provide officials, city developers and families with the information they need to plan for the worst.
This tool, based on the Natural Disasters Index (指数) v2.0, which can judge 14 different disaster types, will use new and communicative datasets (数据集) to track the disasters caused by climate change. The research team stresses that since the basic climate conditions are changing, past weather patterns can no longer reliably guide our understanding of future risks. Instead, the datasets, with advanced computer modeling and the latest climate science, can project how the major types of natural disasters will strengthen themselves and spread widely through the coming decades. This tool marks an important change in how we prepare for climate-related disasters.
“We are in a time when the disasters we face are increasingly affecting the lives and livelihoods of our communities, right when we need this tool most.” said Jeffrey Schlegelmilch, the director of NCDP. “By working on the project, researchers can provide more reliable data that help to raise better decisions, investments (投资) and recovery for communities.”
“For individuals, the datasets may help you look at the kinds of disasters that you may face, which can lead you to plan for them in your own personal preparedness.” said Schlegelmilch. “And the datasets can also help investors to encourage adaptable investments to deal with these risks. Emergency managers and city planners can use these to help look into how disasters may change, which will have a wider effect on disaster prevention plans and city development plans.”
12. What is the main purpose of the project on disasters?
A. To warn of natural disasters. B. To give information for disaster planning.
C. To introduce disaster damage. D. To track disasters’ changes over a long time.
13. What makes the datasets better than past models?
A. The ability to identify disasters. B. The ways to prevent disasters.
C. The use of high-tech and science. D. The basis on the present index.
14. What can be inferred about the datasets in the last two paragraphs?
A. They mainly serve scientific studies. B. They have brought economic returns.
C. They have wide practical applications. D. They are mostly used for data collection.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Tool Mapping Future Climate Risks. B. A Model for Science Data Collection.
C. Datasets Presenting Changing Climate. D. Methods of Natural disaster Prevention.

The Language Learning Journey
“How many languages do you speak?” This simple question is surprisingly difficult to answer. I have studied five languages, but I cannot truly say I can speak all five. ____16____ Simply giving a number doesn’t seem right.
The easiest answer is two: English and French. I can use both well, yet calling them equally “fluent” is misleading. I have studied French for years and even lived in France, so I am very comfortable with it. But my English, as my mother tongue, is far stronger. ____17____
I think of English as sitting and French as walking. Sitting is natural and requires no effort. ____18____ I move without thinking about each step and can go a long way, though I might trip now and then.
____19____ Learning Spanish feels like running a race — it demands total focus and leaves me very tired. Learning Norwegian is like running on a path with things in the way; it is much harder, and when I can’t get past, I have to find another way. Then there is Greek, which feels like running that same race with a lion following close behind — a struggle I have to deal with, but the speed is completely out of my control.
So, what number does that leave me with? “Five” is too much, since I don’t truly command them all. Yet “two” does not tell the full story. ____20____ My real pride comes from the journey of learning the others. In the end, the value lies not in a number, but in the personal challenges faced and the effort, growth, and understanding gained along the way.
A. Walking is also comfortable.
B. My abilities in each are different.
C. For very difficult ideas, I still need it.
D. Actually, I take no pride in a simple count.
E. Each language feels like a different kind of sport.
F. My journey with other languages has been more challenging.
G. This personal experience changed my view on learning completely.
