I decided to try to make some money during the summer holidays. I took our lawn mower and went around our neighbourhood asking if anyone wanted their grass cut.
Our lawn mower was very old. It wasn’t electric or gas-powered (以汽油为动力的). It was hand-powered and you had to push (推) it to make the cutting blades move. It was a lot of hard work.
I put a little sign on the mower saying “Charlie’s Lawn Cutting”. After working for a few weeks, I soon had regular customers. Within about a month, I had enough money to buy a gas-powered mower. I thought, “Now I can do the work faster and make more money!”
The first time I brought my new gas-powered lawn mower to cut a neighbour’s lawn, the lady came to the door and asked, “What’s that?” I told her it was my new lawn mower and that it would do a better job than the old push mower.
She looked disappointed and said, “You mean you threw away that old push mower?” I explained that it was such hard work using a hand-powered mower, and now I could make more money.
The lady said, “You know, I gave you the job mainly because of that old lawn mower. It doesn’t pollute and it doesn’t make a big noise. I’m sure it’s hard work, but it’s great exercise for you, isn’t it?”
Then she said, “I’ll let you cut my grass if you use that old mower, but not that gas-powered one.” I was shocked. “I’ll have to come back later with the old one,” I told her.
I went to the next house and the same thing happened. People liked the fact that I was using good old-fashioned hand power instead of gas power.
I took the gas mower back to the store that day. Now I use my old push mower and I wear a T-shirt that reads “Charlie’s Lawn Cutting. No noise, no pollution—just me!”
24. The writer’s old lawn mower was ________.
A. hand-powered B. noisy C. electric D. gas-powered

A To reduce noise. B. To interest customers.
C. To save money. D. To work faster.
26. From his experience, the writer learned that ________.
A. people preferred the new mower B. the push mower was much greener
C. working hard could please the neighbours D. using a hand-powered mower made less money

Researcher Elyse Salek says curiosity is the driving power for the fast-growing teen (青少年) brain. When teens wonder, they remember better, think sharper, and build skills for life. Think of curiosity as a seed—it grows best in the loving garden of a family. Here are four tips to help your teen’s curiosity grow.
____________________
Teens today often have very busy schedules (日程表). However, having too many things to do and feeling stressed leaves no room for exploring interests. Not having enough time to rest can lead to anxiety, depression, and burnout. Tell your teen directly that you value rest and fun. If your teen is a high achiever, keep an eye on whether they seem less excited or more stressed. Help them plan relaxing time with family and friends.
Explore the Unknown
The great scientist Albert Einstein said “I am only passionately curious.” Creative thinkers are comfortable with the unknown and enjoy the process of discovery. Encourage your teen to ask questions, find answers, and develop their ability to explore. It’s okay to be honest when you don’t know something, and ask open-ended questions like, “What’s interesting to you about that?” This trains their brain to stay open and think deeper.
Take Mistakes as Chances
Some teens see failure as something about themselves, which limits what they can achieve. Curious teens, however, usually see mistakes as chances to learn and improve. Tell your teen that mistakes are part of growing up. When they know your love and their value are unconditional, they’ll be more confident to try new things and take small risks. Praise them for their hard work and help them learn from mistakes to move forward.
Help Them Find Interesting Outlets
Curiosity can sometimes lead teens to risky behaviors, as their prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层) isn’t fully developed. But when teens focus their curiosity on something good for them, it reduces risky behaviors. Passionate (激情的) teens are too busy working on their interests to harm their future success. If your teen hasn’t found their passion, you can light a fire for learning by showing interest and support. Ask what problems they want to solve and help them plan meaningful actions. When they find their passion, be their biggest fan.
By valuing curiosity family can help teens make the most of it, grow their brain and give them the strength throughout their adult lives.
27. Which of the following is the best heading for Paragraph 2?
A. Make Sure Time to Rest B. Stop Being Stressed Out
C. Explore Personal Interests D. Change School Schedules
28. Why does the writer mention Einstein in Paragraph 3?
A. To explain why asking questions is important for learning.
B. To encourage parents to bring out teens’ joy of discovery.
C. To show the great success Einstein achieved in science.
D. To teach parents how to ask open-ended questions.
29. According to the passage, curious teens ________.
A. usually relate failure to themselves B. refuse to try new and risky activities
C. believe their failure limits their success D. take mistakes as chances to make progress
30. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Strong curiosity leads teens to success.
B. Parents should choose hobbies for their teens.
C. Family support helps teens fire up their curiosity.
D. Filling schedules fully helps build curiosity well.
D
We’ve all been in situations where we find it hard to say no. Maybe we agreed to a friend’s request (要求) that we didn’t have the time for, or we kept silent when we saw something wrong at school or work. Why is it so challenging to voice our true thoughts?
The Oxford English Dictionary defines (解释) “defiance” as openly challenging others’ power. However, more usefully, we can understand “defiance” as adhering to our values even when we are pressured (迫使) to do something else. This is important because our daily acts of compliance (顺从) or defiance play a part in building our society (社交圈). Also, it’s key to tell the difference between compliance and consent (同意): compliance is unthinking agreement with others’ requests, while consent is a careful yes based on our values. It needs us to think clearly, know about the thing, understand what might happen, have the right to say no, and finally agree willingly.
But real life brings a big challenge: having the right to say “no” doesn’t always make it easy to actually say it. Why do most of us find it so hard to say no even when we know we should? The main reason is heavy social pressure. We worry about what others might think of us if we don’t meet their expectations. This fear of letting others down can show up in small things like not liking a haircut but keeping quiet or much bigger ones like agreeing to a boss’s extra (额外的) request at work. It often makes us put others’ feelings and needs ahead of our own.
Thankfully, there are practical solutions. In the short term, taking a short break before making a decision gives us space to think clearly. Creating physical distance, such as leaving the room for a minute, can also reduce the pressure. Making decisions in private helps avoid others’ influence and consider our true feelings.
In the long run, training ourselves to be more confident is key. We can start by finding common situations where we usually have trouble saying no. Then, we can picture how we’d like to say back and practice. By doing this regularly, we can change our old habits, making it easier to stand up for ourselves in the future. It’s a process that takes time and effort, but with practice, we can gain the confidence to say no when necessary and live more in line with our values.
31. The words “adhering to” in Paragraph 2 probably mean “________”.
A. sticking to B. giving up C. writing down D. building up
32. ________ can help us say no.
A. Putting others’ opinions first B. Making decisions under pressure
C. Keeping thinking about the situation D. Developing confidence through practice
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To help people to train themselves to be more confident.
B. To explain the difference between compliance and consent.
C. To encourage people to voice true thoughts in line with their values.
D. To discuss the influence of social pressure on people’s daily decisions.

Strength Inside and Out
On May 12, 2008, a magnitude-8.0 (震级8.0的) earthquake hit Wenchuan. Niu Yu, an 11-year-old girl, lost her right leg in the disaster. During the past number of years, she has learned to be strong. The following is her first-hand story of how she turned pain into strength and found her confidence.
The first time I took off the outer prosthesis (假肢) around my leg, I was so afraid that my whole body was shaking. The memories came flooding back. I remembered being buried under the rubble (废墟) of the earthquake for three days. I remembered lying in the hospital staring at the ceiling (天花板) , but seeing only darkness. All I knew was that I had lost a leg. I wouldn’t be able to run anymore.
For many years, I felt afraid. I wanted to be a “normal” girl, but it seemed impossible. I did everything I could to hide. But one day, my father told me something I’ll never forget: if you want to live a good life, you must accept your body as it is.
With encouragement from those around me, I learned to see my leg as a badge (勋章) of honor. It is the thing that has seen me fall and pick myself up countless times. “Why should I hide it?” I asked myself.
My confidence grew when I volunteered (自愿报名参加) for a teaching program in Tibet. And I started running again. In 2018 I ran Wenchuan’s half marathon. That was when I really accepted myself. I pulled off the outer cover of my prosthetic leg to show the metal (金属的) part—it was so cool!
In October 2021, I was invited to walk in a runway (T型台) show in Shanghai. I had never received any modeling training, so I was nervous when I stepped out onto the runway, metal leg first. Then, I remembered a message I had received from a fan. She told me that her dream was to become a model. But being an amputee (被截肢者) made it feel impossible.
Suddenly, I felt powerful. I realized that I was standing on that runway not just as myself, but as someone who stood for everyone just like me. I was there not to look perfect. I was there for me—and them—to feel seen.

The great scientist Albert Einstein said, “I am only passionately curious.” Creative thinkers are comfortable with the unknown and enjoy the process of discovery.
By valuing curiosity, family can help teens make the most of it, grow their brain and give them the strength throughout their adult lives.

29. According to the passage, curious teens ________.
A. usually relate failure to themselves B. refuse to try new and risky activities
C. believe their failure limits their success D. take mistakes as chances to make progress
