One day, my Science teacher, Mr Pearson asked me to have a “quick talk” after class. Although I had always done quite 1 in Science and Maths, I had given up a bit with schoolwork by Grade 8. I didn't really find the 2 in trying. I just thought I would leave school as soon as I could.
So that afternoon, when all the rest of the class had 3, Mr Pearson sat down next to me. He asked me what I wanted to do in the future. I could answer that question 4, because I'd been thinking about it—I wanted to work in a garage (汽车修理厂).
“So you'd like to fix cars?” he said. “Why not 5 them?”
I was surprised, “Making them?”
Mr Pearson said, “You can be an engineer. That means you can 6 and make the best cars in the world possibly.” It was something I'd never 7. Mr Pearson said, “You are good enough at Science and Maths to do that, I know. But you don't try your best. 8?”
I said shyly, “In Grade 8, I just … find everything a bit boring.”
Mr Pearson continued, “It's sometimes boring, but it's like 9 a mountain. You can't find any exciting point until you work up from the bottom. The 10 is difficult, and there's no view for you to enjoy.”
Mr Pearson was there for me after that, to explain things that I couldn't understand, or to help me with 11 in my life. And every month or two, he asked me, “How are things on that mountain?” I always said, “No view but I'm still going 12.”
Mr Pearson was right. At the end of Grade 8, I really started to 13 Science and Maths. He wasn't right about me becoming an engineer though. I got a bit 14 with cars as I got older, and decided that I wanted to study medicine when I left school. I now work in medical research, and I really feel like I'm on the top of that 15 at last. And the view is the greatest!

What subject do you worry about the most at school? Many students worry about Maths. Some students can't sleep well the day before a Maths exam. Others may feel very nervous during the exam itself. But there might be a way to make the subject less stressful (有压力的).
“For students who are worried about Maths, posture (姿势) makes a big difference,” Erik Peper, a researcher from a university told Daily Mail. That's right—sitting up straight can help you do better in Maths exams.
Researchers tested 125 college students. They asked them to do a Maths exam while sitting in a slumped-over (趴倒的) position, or sitting up straight. After the test, 56% of the students said the exam was easier to do if they were sitting up straight.
“Slumping over is a defensive (防备的) posture. It can bring out negative (消极的) memories in the body and brain. This can stop you from thinking clearly,” Peper said.
Students who were not nervous about taking the Maths exam didn't necessarily benefit (受益) from better posture. But they did find that doing maths in a slumped-over position was more difficult, Science Daily reported.
Good posture isn't just helpful for taking Maths exams. Musicians, sports players and public speakers can all benefit from it. When you feel stressed out, you can also try to sit up straight or stand tall. It can help you feel more positive (积极的) and focus better.

One day, the students at Sunshine International School filled in papers about their experience at school. The teachers looked at all the answers. The students were very happy with the teachers, the buildings and the after-school activities. However, everybody disliked the school lunches.
The head teacher thought about this. She asked some students to find out more. She told them to ask the students what exactly they wanted on the lunch menu.
Li Ming, Nick, Karen and Sarah all offered to help out. They named their group the “Lunch Committee (委员会)”. Nick thought they sounded important.
“The school doesn't give students enough choices,” said Karen. “We have cooking for vegetarians. It is never very nice to have potatoes, cabbages and tomatoes all the time.”
“Yes!” Li Ming agreed.
“I think that the menu is too American. Not everyone likes burgers and pasta (意大利面). We should have dishes from different countries,” said Sarah.
“We should offer more dessert (甜品) choices. Dessert is the best part of any meal,” said Nick excitedly. “We need …”
Karen cut in, “We need more fruit and salads.”
Sarah agreed with Karen.
“We should ask them for a chocolate fountain (喷泉),” Nick said happily.
The four friends talked to different groups of students. Then they took the ideas and the students' advice to the cooks.
After that, the cooks made changes to the lunch menus. They offered menus for students with different eating habits. They added more fruit and vegetables. They made noodles, dumplings, small pies and soup. Everyone was happy, except (除了) Nick.

Recess (课间休息) for Kids
Ask a group of kids about their favourite part of the school day and many will talk about something that happened at recess. Maybe they finally made it across the monkey bars (单杠). Maybe somebody kicked the ball over the fence. Maybe a fruit tree in a neighbouring yard started to drop apples on the playground. 1
It's true not just according to kids, but also to adults who study recess for kids. Whether they're inventing a new game or sitting under a tree, kids need a break—or several of them—during the school day.
Why Kids Need Recess.
There's no debate that recess, or mainly referred to as physical activity, is good for kids.
You can't have your brains go for hours at a time and retain and store information in working memory. 2 Besides, activity that involves arms and legs—running, climbing, crawling—builds new neural connections, which helps kids regulate their emotions. Studies show that after recess, children are more attentive in class, perform better and have fewer emotional problems.
How Much Recess Should Kids Get.
“Ideally, children should get four 15-minute breaks every day,” says Debbie Rhea, a professor from Texas Christian University, who advocates for outdoor play in schools. 3 It is noted that Centres for Disease Control and Prevention have recently expanded the idea to encourage recess for all students, including those in middle and high schools.
4
In addition to simply providing enough time for recess, schools should teach skills that will make recess more successful. For example, letting kids run fast will help them develop coordination. 5 And even falling is something kids need to practise to avoid getting badly hurt. To allow children to take reasonable risks with their bodies is also a wise move.
A. How to Make Recess Better.
B. Who should help kids have recess.
C. You need time away to process it.
D. This recommendation has been widely accepted.
E. Any one of these things is a marker of good recess.
F. Maybe running up the slide is not as unsafe as it looks.
G. We wouldn't have kids sitting there for maths or reading for long hours.
