If you think any kind of walking is the same for your health, a new study might change your mind. Researchers recently found that walking for 15 or more minutes in a row is better for you than breaking the same number of steps into short, quick walks — even if you walk the same total distance each day.
To do the study, scientists looked at data from over 33,000 middle-aged and older people in the UK Biobank, a big database of British people’s health records. They divided the people into groups based on how long their longest daily walk was: some walked 5 minutes or less, some walked 10 minutes, and others walked 15 minutes or more. All the participants wore activity trackers for a week to record their movement. Then, the researchers checked their health over the next few years, watching for things like heart disease or early death. They focused on people who took fewer than 8,000 steps a day.
When they compared these groups to the participants’ health outcomes, the results were clear. People who walked for 15 or more continuous minutes were about 12% less likely to get heart disease. They were also 20% less likely to die from any cause. Even when two people walked the same total steps in a day, the one who took longer walks had better health.
This is good news for people who don’t get enough exercise but struggle to stay active. Instead of stressing about long workouts, just grouping your steps into 15-minute walks can help. As one expert put it, any movement is better than none, but longer walks give extra health benefits.
So next time you walk, skip the quick trips. Take 15 minutes to walk — your body will thank you!

The book, Nature State of Mind: SUNY Students Reflect on Our Environment, focuses on the environmental diversity of New York State through essays, photos, and artwork. It is more than a book; it is a collaborative (协作的) project of the deep bond between people and the natural world.
In 2024, Professor David Taylor proposed a statewide effort to unite 13 State University of New York (SUNY) schools, including 70 student artists and writers. He organized research classes, and five key students managed connection with others and contributions. The team worked for over a year, making countless decisions to bring the vision to life.
For the students, the project was deeply meaningful. “Putting this book together was important to me because it really shows that students care about and are inspired by their local environments,” said Alanna Earls, a key team member. Esther Poon, another key contributor, emphasized the whole team’s great contributions to the project and the goal of uniting SUNY schools through environmental art and literature. “I am very proud of all of us knowing that our hard work has paid off.” Poon said.
All profits (利润) from the book sales will support the New York State Outdoor Educators Association (NYSOEA), a nonprofit organization for outdoor education. Beyond the final product, Taylor highlighted the invaluable experience students gained — learning publishing processes, managing a large project, and building a vast network across the state.
8. What do we know about the project?
A. It was a nonprofit project.
B. It was organized by SUNY.
C. It was completed by five professors.
D. It was a team work of university students.
9. How does the author show the significance of the project in Paragraph 3?
A. By analyzing data. B. By listing examples.
C. By giving definitions. D. By making comparisons.
10. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. The students gained much beyond money.
B. The book didn’t sell well in America.
C. Taylor undervalued students’ experience.
D NYSOEA gave the project much support.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To introduce a collaborative project.
B To appreciate the professor’s efforts.
C. To show students’ excellent artwork.
D. To advertise a newly published book.

As the busy holiday shopping season is around the corner, you’ll soon see cheaper tech products: retailers (零售商) plan to cut prices by up to 28% for consumer electronics (消费电子产品) and 23% for computers. While it’s exciting to buy new devices, don’t forget about the old tech you already own — instead of letting it sit unused and gather dust, contributing it can help people who need it most.
Take Compudopt, an organization based in Texas, for example. This group collects old computers, refurbishes (翻新) them, and gives them for free to low-income families and individuals, who get two years of technical support to help them use the tech. Every year, Compudopt hosts hundreds of giveaway events in over 30 cities, handing out 300 or more laptops to those who sign up. Most of the computers it refurbishes come from companies that are upgrading their office devices. Even if your old device isn’t good enough to reuse, it still helps — personal contributions are often taken apart for parts to repair other computers.
Other organizations do similar work too. And why does this matter? A recent study found that owning a computer helps people use the Internet in more beneficial ways, like searching for jobs, looking up health information, or using government services, more than just having a smartphone. For many busy families, having a computer at home saves them time they’d otherwise spend on in-person tasks, like paying bills.
While donating old tech won’t solve the “digital divide”, the gap between those who have easy access to tech and those who don’t, it can make a small but meaningful difference for someone in your community. This gift-giving season, turn your old devices into a helpful gift for others.
12. Why is the shopping season mentioned at the beginning?
A. To present a scene. B. To raise readers’ awareness.
C. To lead in the topic D. To introduce the background.
13. What does Compudopt do with the computers it collects?
A. It sells them to tech companies. B. It breaks them for parts to sell.
C. It offers them to people in need. D. It upgrades them for individuals.
14. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Introduction to the contribution.
B. Benefits of owning a computer.
C. Ways of making the contribution.
D. Advantages of surfing on the Internet.
15. What may be the author’s attitude towards the organizations?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.

Last night, as I finished my coffee and checked tomorrow’s weather report, my granddaughter Lily tiptoed (蹑手蹑脚) into the room. Holding her favorite doll tightly to her chest, she looked at me with wide, eager eyes — an expression showing she had a heartfelt request (请求).
“Grandpa, can you babysit Rosie tomorrow?” she asked softly. Confused at first, I soon realized Rosie was the doll. “She wants to go trucking with you more than anything,” Lily said, her eyes shining. I couldn’t refuse. When I nodded, Lily’s face lit up. She hugged me warmly and handed Rosie to me carefully, as if it were her treasure.
This morning, she walked me to my truck and reminded me, “No naps without a blanket, and don’t let her sit in the sun.” She waved until my truck was out of sight.
On the road, I tied a small seat belt for Rosie and sent her photo to Lily. Lily replied with more reminders, like propping Rosie up to see the view. At a truck stop, a man noticed Rosie and laughed. I told him the story, and he shared that his granddaughter also made him take teddy bears on trips. We chatted happily, connected by our granddaughters’ love.
I even ordered a tiny work vest for Rosie. Tonight I took a photo of her watching the sunset and sent it to Lily. Her voice message came quickly, full of joy, “Thank you, Grandpa. I love you so much. Rosie loves you too.” Those words warmed my heart deeply. The light doll carried the precious love between Lily and me.

All the participants wore activity trackers for a week to record their movement. Then, the researchers checked their health over the next few years, watching for things like heart disease or early death.(为开展这项研究,科学家们调取了英国生物样本库(UK Biobank)中3.3万余名中老年人的数据——该数据库是英国大型健康记录数据库。 故选A项。

13 What does Compudopt do with the computers it collects?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.
C 13. C 14. B 15. A

根据第一段“As the busy holiday shopping season is around the corner, you’ll soon see cheaper tech products: retailers (零售商) plan to cut prices by up to 28% for consumer electronics (消费电子产品) and 23% for computers. While it’s exciting to buy new devices, don’t forget about the old tech you already own — instead of letting it sit unused and gather dust, contributing it can help people who need it most.(随着繁忙的假日购物季即将来临,你很快就会看到价格更实惠的科技产品:零售商计划将消费电子产品降价高达28%,电脑降价23%。虽然购置新设备令人兴奋,但别忘了你已拥有的旧科技产品——与其让它们闲置积灰,不如将其捐赠出去,帮助那些最需要的人)”可推知,开头提及购物季是为了由新品降价的话题,引出捐赠旧科技产品的文章主题。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“This group collects old computers, refurbishes (翻新) them, and gives them for free to low-income families and individuals, who get two years of technical support to help them use the tech.(该组织回收旧电脑,对其进行翻新后,免费捐赠给低收入家庭和个人,这些受助者还能获得两年的技术支持,以帮助他们熟练使用这些科技产品)”可知,Compudopt会将收集的电脑提供给有需要的人。
根据第三段“Other organizations do similar work too. And why does this matter? A recent study found that owning a computer helps people use the Internet in more beneficial ways, like searching for jobs, looking up health information, or using government services, more than just having a smartphone. For many busy families, having a computer at home saves them time they’d otherwise spend on in-person tasks, like paying bills.(其他机构也在开展类似工作。而这一点为何重要?近期一项研究发现,拥有电脑能帮助人们以更有益的方式使用互联网 —— 比如搜索工作机会、查询健康资讯或使用政府服务——这比仅拥有智能手机的作用更广泛。对于许多忙碌的家庭来说,家中有一台电脑还能节省时间,否则他们就得亲自处理缴费等事务)”可知,本段核心讲述拥有电脑的诸多益处。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“While donating old tech won’t solve the “digital divide”, the gap between those who have easy access to tech and those who don’t, it can make a small but meaningful difference for someone in your community. This gift-giving season, turn your old devices into a helpful gift for others.(虽然捐赠旧科技产品无法彻底消除“数字鸿沟”——即那些能便捷获取科技产品的人与无法获取者之间的差距,但它能为你所在社区的人带来微小却意义非凡的改变。这个送礼季,不妨将你的旧设备变成一份助力他人的暖心礼物吧)”可推知,作者认可这些组织的作用,还呼吁读者参与捐赠,可见其态度是支持的。故选A项。
Our lives are based on self-worth. ____16____ However, what you do, what you achieve, and how people see you cannot decide your value. The reality is that you are a worthy person simply because you exist. Here are three habits to help improve your self-worth.
Keep promises to yourself
Each thing you promise to yourself gives you a chance to either build or reduce your self-worth. For example, if you skip a planned workout, you are not keeping a promise to yourself. You are sending yourself an extremely strong signal that your well-being isn’t worth the effort. ____17____
Do something challenging regularly
____18____ Whenever you achieve something tough, you are telling yourself that you are powerful and worthy of respect. In this way, you are improving your self-worth. You prove to yourself again and again that you deserve the best because of what you know you’re capable of.
____19____
How you treat yourself matters most. Many people have no problem showing up 100 percent when someone they love needs help, yet hesitate when it comes to themselves. ____20____ By doing so, you not only make your relationships stronger but also raise your worth.
A. Seek others’ help directly
B. Step forward for yourself
C. Self-worth is earned through daily actions.
D. Self-respect and self-worth are closely related.
E. Thus, keeping your word ensures your self-value.
F. Most individuals assume self-worth relies on their achievements.
G. Instead, you should care for yourself the way you care for others.
F 17. E 18. C 19. B 20. G
由上文“Our lives are based on self-worth.(我们的生活建立在自我价值感之上)”和下文“However, what you do, what you achieve, and how people see you cannot decide your value.(然而,你的所作所为、所获成就以及他人对你的看法并不能决定你的价值)”可知,空格处需指出人们对自我价值感的普遍错误认知,与后文形成转折。
由上文“For example, if you skip a planned workout, you are not keeping a promise to yourself. You are sending yourself an extremely strong signal that your well-being isn’t worth the effort.(例如,如果你跳过了计划好的锻炼,就是没有遵守对自己的承诺。你正在向自己发出一个强烈的信号:你的健康不值得付出努力)”可知,空格处需总结前文,点明遵守对自己的承诺对自我价值感的重要性。E项“Thus, keeping your word ensures your self-value.(因此,信守承诺能守护你的自我价值感)”符合语境,“Thus”表因果,承接前文“违背自我承诺会贬低自我价值”的内容,反向点明信守承诺的意义,契合本段“信守对自己的承诺”的核心主题,逻辑清晰。故选E项。
【18题详解】
由下文“Whenever you achieve something tough, you are telling yourself that you are powerful and worthy of respect. In this way, you are improving your self-worth.(每当你完成一件难事,你就是在告诉自己,你很强大,值得被尊重。通过这种方式,你就在提升自己的自我价值感)”可知,空格处需引出本段核心,说明完成挑战与自我价值感的关联,或总述该做法的作用。C项“Self-worth is earned through daily actions.(自我价值感是通过日常行动获得的)”符合语境,该句总起本段,“daily actions”指代后文“完成有挑战性的事”这一具体行动,后文正是对该句的具体阐释,说明完成挑战这一日常行动如何赢得自我价值感,逻辑连贯。故选C项。
【19题详解】
由下文“How you treat yourself matters most. Many people have no problem showing up 100 percent when someone they love needs help, yet hesitate when it comes to themselves.(你如何对待自己才是最重要的。很多人在所爱之人需要帮助时会全力以赴,却在对待自己时犹豫不决)”可知,空格处需作为本段主题句,概括“主动善待自己、为自己付出”的核心建议。B项“Step forward for yourself.(为自己挺身而出)”符合语境,该句总领全段,精准概括了后文“正视对自己的态度,像对待他人一样认真对待自己”的内容,逻辑清晰。故选B项。
【20题详解】
由上文“Many people have no problem showing up 100 percent when someone they love needs help, yet hesitate when it comes to themselves.(很多人在所爱之人需要帮助时会全力以赴,却在对待自己时犹豫不决)”和下文“By doing so, you not only make your relationships stronger but also raise your worth.(通过这样做,你不仅能让人际关系更牢固,还能提升自我价值感)”可知,空格处需给出正确的做法,衔接前文的错误行为与后文的积极结果。G项“Instead, you should care for yourself the way you care for others.(相反,你应该像关心别人一样关心自己)”符合语境,“Instead”表转折,针对前文“对自己犹豫”的行为给出正确做法,且该做法正是后文“By doing so”所指代的内容,能直接带来提升自我价值感的结果,逻辑连贯。故选G项。

I’m sorry to hear you're feeling anxious about your body shape. In my opinion, swimming is an excellent choice for you.
Swimming is a full-body workout that can help you build muscles and burn fat effectively. It’s gentle on the joints, reducing the risk of injury compared to high-impact sports. Moreover, being in the water can be relaxing, which helps relieve stress and anxiety. You’ll gradually notice improvements in your body and mood as you swim regularly.

Tonight, I took a photo of her watching the sunset and sent it to Lily. Her voice message came quickly, full of joy, “Thank you, Grandpa. I love you so much. Rosie loves you too.” Those words warmed my heart deeply. The light doll carried the precious love between Lily and me.
