As we know, the desert covers large areas of the earth. In the desert, there is very little rain and it is very hot during the day and so cold at night. If you are a hiker who wants to cross the desert, it might be wise to know what you should do in order to survive in the desert.
Try to find water in the desert. If you find a small piece of land where the earth is wet, dig deep inside to look for water. Another method of getting water is to cover a green plant with a plastic bag. As it breathes, water vapour will collect inside the bag. Little by little, you can collect enough water to drink.
Plan to travel at night and sleep during the day if you find you have to stay in the desert for a period of time. If you can find any shade in the desert, use it as a shelter to protect you from the strong sunlight.
Wear light-coloured clothes. You’ll be cooler if you wear that kind of clothes, which can help your body become cool and protect you from sunburn (晒伤).
Prepare to signal (示意) to planes passing overhead if you are caught in the desert. During the day keep a smoky fire burning and at night, a bright one. Spell out the word “SOS” on the ground, using whatever materials you can find. In this way, you are more likely to be saved.

It’s wintertime. There are six solar terms—Lidong, Xiaoxue, Daxue, Dongzhi, Xiaohan and Dahan—in winter, according to the Chinese lunar calendar.
Lidong is the start of winter. After Lidong, in most parts of the country it is very cold. On this day, after a year of hard work, people are happy to take a break and spend some time with their family. People in the northern part of China celebrate Lidong by having dumplings and mutton (羊肉) soup.
Xiaoxue and Daxue come after Lidong. During Xiaoxue, in northern China, it snows and temperatures slowly fall below 0ºC. Daxue means even more snow and greater temperature drops.
On the day of Dongzhi, the day is the shortest and the night is the longest in the northern hemisphere. Many places around the country can still be cold. Ancient Chinese people would often start counting “nine cold periods” from Dongzhi. Every cold period has nine days. They believed that after 81 cold days, spring would arrive.
Xiaohan usually brings the lowest temperatures of the year. There may be great winds and heavy snow. Finally, during Dahan, the snowy weather fills the fields with snow. All Chinese people are ready to welcome the Chinese New Year after Dahan. The Spring Festival, China’s most important festival, falls at this time. After that, a new round of solar terms will start.

Dana Csonka is an adult now. When she was 8, her house caught on fire. The fire left burning scars (伤疤) on over 18 percent of her body, including her face, neck and arms. She got better and returned to school. Her classmates were mean, though. They made fun of her scars. “I didn’t have any friends,” she said.
Her nurses at the hospital gave her a suggestion. They said she should go to a camp for kids who had been burned. She went there every summer for 10 years. It helped her feel better. She met kids who could understand what she went through.
The burn camp started in the 1980s. Since then, it has been offering children with burning scars a week of relief from looking different. Campers go there to swim, play games and do many other things.
For 14-year-old Kevin Aeling, this was his second summer at the camp. Before then, a terrible fire left scars on over 25 per cent of his body.
At first, he was not sure if he wanted to go to the camp. His mother said, “He said, ‘I don’t want people to stare at me,’ I said, ‘Kevin, it’s a burn camp. Other people there have burns.’” He ended up loving it. Later, his mother noticed a difference. He was no longer embarrassed about the special clothes he had to wear for his scars. He was more comfortable being himself.
Every year, the Thursday of the camp week is Fire Truck Day. Fire trucks arrive, along with campers from previous (以前的) years, doctors and nurses, and family members. Campers can see fire trucks up close and talk with firefighters. Sometimes, they are the very firefighters who rescued the campers months or years earlier. Fire Truck Day allows them to see each other in a happy situation, which is always the campers’ most unforgettable day.

When my daughter was in primary school, she brought home four small twigs (嫩枝) one day. Her school gave these twigs to the students to plant. None of them looked very hardy, but with hope for the future, I planted them in our backyard. But because of an accident with the lawnmower (割草机) and poor soil, three of them died. Only one survived. It was crooked (弯曲) and grew very slowly. It never got very tall. In the end, it looked more like a bush than a tree. A few years ago, I noticed that it was starting to die. The lower branches were becoming bare Only the top third of the tree was still green. Last summer I did my best to save it by feeding it a lot of fertilizer (肥料), but it didn’t work.
Later one morning, I went out and looked at it again. I was wondering whether it would be better to just cut it down. It would make mowing the lawn easier. As I walked over to take a closer look at it, however, I noticed something moving within the leaves. It was a robin (知更鸟) patiently building a nest in the topmost branches. I smiled when I looked at it. I thought maybe this old tree was still useful. It might not be healthy or pretty, but it was still giving a bird a home. This tree made me know that all of our lives have purpose. It doesn’t matter if we are young and strong or old and sickly. Until our last breath, we have things to do, love to give, and joy to share.
We can help to make this world a better and more beautiful place.
46. Which of the following is a reason why the three twigs died according to the writer?
A. There was a natural disaster. B. His daughter didn’t plant them correctly.
C. The soil around them was not rich. D. There was no sunlight in the backyard.
47. The underlined word “topmost” in Paragraph 2 means “________” in Chinese.
48. What might the writer do with the tree later?
A. He might cut it down. B. He might leave it as it was.
C. He might build more nests in it. D. He might take away some of its leaves.
49. Through the story, the writer aims to tell us that ________.
A. we should take care of animals and plants B. we are living in a beautiful world
C. every living thing has its own purpose D. we should work hard until our last breath

My mother and I were staying in a town near Pompeii (庞贝). The earth shook those days. That night, I was sleeping when the ground shook very hard. My mother rushed into my room to wake me up. We had to stay outside for the night. My mother was so scared. She didn’t shut her eyes for even one second. By six o’clock the next morning, many buildings were still shaking. We decided to leave the town.
The road was crowded. We were at a place out of town. Just then, shocking things happened. Our coach couldn’t go straight ahead. It began to move from side to side. The sea moved back suddenly, and many sea animals were left on the sand.
We noticed a very dark cloud over Mount Vesuvius. Soon, the cloud moved down and covered the sea. My mother asked me to continue without her, but I refused to leave her behind. We moved on while the cloud was spreading over the land like a flood. It turned day into night. The air was thick with smoke and ash began to fall in heavy showers. All around us, women were calling, children were crying and men were shouting. People were trying to find their families in the dark.
Thankfully, after a while, the daylight returned! Everything was covered in ash, like the snow in winter. After a night of living between hope and fear, we had no thoughts of things to come.
50. What happened when the writer was sleeping that night?
A. A heavy rain started. B. The ground shook very hard.
C. Their coach broke down. D. Mount Vesuvius erupted (喷发).
51. What can we know about the writer and his mother?
A. They were not afraid of the earthquake. B. They helped others find their families.
C. They didn’t separate (分开) during the disaster. D. They knew exactly what would happen next.
52. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. A scientific report about Mount Vesuvius. B. A personal experience during a natural disaster.
C. A historical story about Pompeii. D. A lesson on how to survive an earthquake.

1. —Would you please ________ your shoes on the floor?
—Sorry, I ________ do it any more.
A. not fall; won’t B. not to drop; won’t C. not drop; won’t D. not drop; will
“Would you please (not) do sth.?”
2. —Lucy, do you know World Sleep Day?
—Yes. Let’s ________ bad sleeping habits and form better ones on World Sleep Day.
A. get ready for B. get rid of C. get tired of D. get along with
get ready for为……做准备;get rid of摆脱,除去;get tired of对……感到厌倦;get along with与……
3. We all passed the exam ________ Wang Lei. He felt very sad.
A. except B. since C. with D. besides
【答案】A
之外;since自……以来;with和……
4. Which of the following words does not belong to (属于) the same group as the other three?
A. action B. scientist C. reporter D. visitor
【答案】A

It was crooked (弯曲的) and grew very slowly.

C. every living thing has its own purpose D. we should work hard until our last breath
C 47. A 48. B 49. C
根据第一段“But because of...poor soil, three of them died.”
根据第二段“It was a robin (知更鸟) patiently building a nest in the topmost branches.” 故选A。

It might not be healthy or pretty, but it was still giving a bird a home.”
根据第二段“This tree made me know that all of our lives have purpose. It doesn’t matter if we are young and strong or old and sickly. Until our last breath, we have things to do, love to give, and joy to share.”
