Some people think that's 1.because it is healthy and clean. Others drink bottled water because it's convenient—you can carry it around with you. In hot countries, summer is often 2.when people buy bottles of cold water. However, the truth is 3.that using lots of plastic bottles is not a good idea. First of all, oil is 4.what we need a lot to make plastic products. If we reduced the number of bottles we use, we wouldn't need so much oil. Plastic bottles also pollute the environment, which is 5.where we human beings live and work. If we reused all our plastic bottles, we wouldn't need so much space for rubbish dumps. But in some countries, people don't reuse much of plastic. They reuse only a small amount. The rest becomes rubbish on land and in rivers and seas. These are 6.why we shouldn't use so many plastic bottles. So next time you want to throw away a plastic bottle into a litter bin, stop and think. Reusing it will be 7.how you will help the environment. Go green! The point of going green is 8.that you can make a difference to the world. Ⅰ.阅读理解 A In China, jade (玉) serves as one of the nation's oldest symbols of virtue and nobility. For years, jade carvers have produced beautiful artworks, because of their exquisite skills and complicated techniques passed down from generation to generation. Among China's wide-ranging styles of jade carving, Beijing's is one of the most famous and recognized worldwide for its use of imperial elements. Jade carving originated in the Yuan Dynasty. In the succeeding dynasty, the Ming, the court gathered skilled jade carvers from all over the nation to create the finest of products for the imperial family, lifting the art to new heights.During the Qing Dynasty, jade became especially popular in Beijing, and the carving skill reached its peak. After the Qing, the craft continued to flourish, with thousands of people pouring their creativity into the jade carving industry. In 2008,Beijing's particular practices were listed as national intangible cultural heritage. Zhang Tiecheng is a third-generation Beijing jade carving inheritor. In 1983,when the technical school attached to the Beijing Jade Factory began to enroll students, Zhang decided to try his luck. After four years of training, he graduated and started working at the factory. Through pure diligence and perseverance,he gradually became a master of the carving art. The year 2008 was a significant one for Zhang.Chinese jade art was introduced internationally through the “Chinese Seal” Olympic symbol and the jade-carved medals. Zhang participated in the design of both. They combined white jade with gold,a light greenish jade with silver, and a gray shade of jade with bronze to make the medals present that perfect combination of truthfulness and virtue. Following his Olympic work, Zhang was invited to restore the jade decorations in the Palace Museum. During this assignment, Zhang couldn't help but feel sad as he realized how the once successful jade artistry was slowly disappearing from its once celebrated stage. As an inheritor of Beijing jade carving, Zhang has added modern artistic elements into this traditional skill. He now hopes more young people can take up the craftsmanship so it can continue to flourish for many years to come. 1.What is special about Beijing jade carving? Proving it to be true is Jackson Hedden, a 27-year-old industrial designer. Jackson Hedden is an advocate of creative minds and creative ideas. He believes that every person is born creative but loses their creativity as they mature. This results in completely boring personalities and a lack of creative problem-solving techniques. According to Jackson, the most significant way to find personal success is to allow creativity to shine through all ideas coming to life. It is important to build a connection with anything one is working on.It is a common human characteristic that people tend to react to situations better if they have had a personal experience with them. This enables them to understand the problem better, resulting in more unique and innovative solutions to solve it.Following a similar approach, Jackson also establishes a connection with the products he is designing so that he can better understand the improvements he can bring to the existing design. Jackson made his debut (首次露面)as an industrial designer in 2017 and worked with Karim Rashid, a New York-based industrial designer. This was his first exposure to the design industry, and Jackson learned a great deal.As this was just the beginning of his career, Jackson wished to explore more, so he worked together with the founder of Kabaq and the CEO of Alper Guler to become the exclusive designer for an augmented food reality startup. He then joined a Los Angeles-based firm, RKS Designs, and worked there for a period of two years. Keeping up with the trends, Jackson's designs are clean, innovative, and elegant. He has always kept himself in his customers' shoes and designed the product according to their convenience. Having a keen interest in designs and creative works, Jackson is always interested in a challenge to build something new with his extraordinary design techniques. 5.What does Jackson Hedden think of people's creativity? What does it take to achieve worldchanging scientific breakthroughs? Some are the result of a lucky accident, combined with curiosity. Scientists traveling down one road suddenly find reason to switch to another road, one they have never planned to travel—a road that may well lead nowhere. 1.________ One day, usually initially in their career, they get an idea they can't stop thinking about. It's crazy, they say to themselves, but is it really impossible? They talk to respected colleagues who often remind them of all the reasons that their ideas might not work, and how damaging this could be to their career. Yet, the idea won't die and they are determined to travel that road—a road that may well lead nowhere. 2.________ Whichever road scientists who achieve lifesaving breakthroughs travel, they often endure disinterest, like Fleming, who discovered penicillin(青霉素) due to lucky accidents and curiosity, or repeated skepticism and rejection, like Karikó, who made all mRNA vaccines possible with years of persistence and resilience. By bringing their dreams to life, they were rewarded with fame, wealth and something even more valuable. 3.________ Of course, the obsession (痴迷) with an unlikely dream fails to pay off for many scientists. 4.________ Nature doesn't turn out to operate the way they have predicted it. In the end, their beautiful theory is killed by brutal facts. For those dreamers on the right track, they would have achieved their dreams—if only they had done the experiment a little differently, if only they had persisted a little longer, or if only the support for their work had not run out. Ultimately, scientific breakthroughs are possible only if a society is willing to invest in dreamers, recognizing that not all investments will lead to major breakthroughs. 5.________ Above all, the investments prevent suffering and death and change the world. A.Some scientists are addicted to their crazy ideas. B.Their ideas, though brilliant, in the end are proved wrong. C.But they refuse to back down and struggle to find more financial support. D.Because of them, millions of people around the world avoid getting sick or death. E.Other major breakthroughs originate from scientists pursuing a specific idea. F.But sometimes the road leads to major breakthroughs like Xrays and vaccines. G.However, the investments leading to breakthroughs bring a greater economic return. 1.E 解析:根据上文“What does it take...Some are...combined with curiosity.” E项与上文中的“Some are the result...curiosity.” 2.F 解析:根据上文“Yet, the idea won't die...may well lead nowhere.” 3.D 解析:根据上文“By bringing their dreams...even more valuable.” Ⅲ.语法填空 (2024·大庆铁人中学高二月考)Known as a “voice catcher” in his social circle, 39-year-old Long Qing is working to record dialects (方言) and 1.____________(nature) sounds in danger of fading away as a result of urbanization.
