Can AI Make Intelligent Art? Adapted from The Guardian 202404 Two people dressed in black have their face covered by oversized①, smooth gold masks, as though they have their faces in half an egg. They seem like sculptures, but the subtle② rise and fall of their chests makes them look like human. The fact is that they aren't actually human. They're humanmachine , “Idioms”, created by French artist Pierre Huyghe for his exhibition in Venice. Idioms are wandering③ the exhibition for its between March and November. Sensors in their masks monitor④ the rooms they sit in and visitors they encounter, and artificial intelligence will gradually convert⑤ this information into a brandnew language—building a dictionary until they will even be able to communicate with one another. Every day, their knowledge will ; Huyghe wonders what they might be able to say in 20 years' time. AI is already all around us, autocompleting⑥ our emails, suggesting a new show to watch on the video platform. Chatbots have revolutionised⑦ writing—responding to prompts⑧ to write cover letters, code, plays and poems—while texttoimage models allow anyone to create “art” by typing in a few words. Like Huyghe, creatives from German filmmaker Hito Steyerl to British conceptualist⑨ Gillian Wearing have used AI to make or their art. But as the technology becomes more prominent⑩, artists' use of AI risks feeling trite⑪. Turkish artist Refk Anadol's “live paintings” are displayed at the Serpentine Gallery in London. AI was fed imagery⑫ of rainforests and coral reefs to generate Anadol's exhibition, Echoes of the Earth: Living Archive. However, have said that Anadol's previous AIgenerated work is overhyped⑬. New York Magazine's Jerry Saltz found the work to be pointless⑭—good at entertaining you briefly but ultimately⑮ “not disturbing anything inside you”. What makes Huyghe's Idioms special is that as a viewer, it is interesting to be confronted⑯ not with a finite state of artificial intelligence but an ongoing process of “artificial learning”. Here, Huyghe's use of AI takes the art out of the artist's control. The Idioms could fail to produce a language or produce one that is offensive⑰ to our ears. Anyway, it is exciting. Therefore, AI art works best when it does something that the artist alone could not, as is the case with Huyghe's selfgenerating language. In the 1960s, “computerart” swept the globe. One contemporary⑱ writer said “perhaps a computer will never produce a painting all by itself” and noted with caution⑲ that “at least one expert thinks such art represents a genuine new artform”. One day, undoubtedly, discussions of AI's place in art will sound out of date. ①oversized adj. 1.dressed 2.sensors 3.gradually 4.autocompleting 5.to create 6.artists' 7.What 8.but 9.that 10.undoubtedly 1.bury v.
