To the dynamic beat of Aretha Franklin's songs, families sit in the crowd at the hall
of Horace Mann Middle School here. They are waiting, slightly anxious. These families
are participating in a one-of-a-kind program called Spark.
The meeting will pair students with volunteer apprentice()teachers.Lawyers,
hair stylists, and software developers will meet up with students who have selected their
occupations as the ones they would most like to learn about.Spark apprenticeships provide
workplace experiences that bring economically disadvantaged teens into contact with a
world they have probably only imagined.
Nationally, some 30 percent of US high school students drop out. While improved
curricula, better teaching, and modern equipment may be part of the solution,"You have
to have the relevance,"says Mr.Balme of his six-year-old Spark program.
The gap between those worlds-one of limited expectations and hardship, the other
of success and prosperity-hit Balme one day when he was volunteering as a science
teacher at a public school in Philadelphia. He was also studying at the Wharton School of
Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
The public school was in bad shape, with a high dropout (rate. While
walking back to Wharton,Balme realized he was "seeing all these resources, and yet
these kids had no idea what was right there all around them".That's when everything fell
into place. The problem and the solution were right next to each other. In 2004,he and
Melia Dicker co-founded Spark.
"Apprenticeships are not rocket science,"says Holly Depatie,Spark board chair. But
other coaching programs, such as Boys and Girls Clubs of America, while pairing
youngsters with adults, don't specifically target learning about jobs.So far,Spark has
created more than 700 apprenticeships in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles.
4.How does Spark help the students?
A.By financing young apprentices.
B.By improving school curricula.
C.By updating teaching equipment.
D.By offering hands-on experiences.
5.What is the major drive for Balme to set up Spark?
A.The dropout rate of US high schools.B.The prosperity in famous universities.
C.The expectation of disadvantaged teens.D.The imbalance in educational resources.

In most theoretical models examining how reputations impact people's desire to
cooperate with one another, reputations are defined as either good or bad, based on
limited information. These models have typically assumed that a single action determines
someone's reputation.
There is a lot of information available about people's behavior in today's world,
especially with social media.A research by biology professor Jeshua Plotkin's team
showed that looking at multiple actions and forgiving some bad actions is a method of
judging behavior that is sufficient to sustain cooperation,a method they call "look twice,
forgive once”.
The basic idea in this study is that if you observe two interactions of somebody and at
least one of them is an action that you would consider good, then you cooperate with that
person,but otherwise you reject them.
The research points out that even if different people in a society subscribe to different
standards of judgment,"look twice, forgive once"still generates sufficient consensus to
promote cooperation.Plotkin says that this method maintains cooperation without
referring to reputations released by public institutions. It offers an important alternative
when public institutions exist but decrease of trust in them prevents cooperation.
Plotkin says all researchers were surprised that the "look twice, forgive once"
strategy couldn't be displaced by other strategies, such as always cooperating or always
rejecting, looking at more than two actions from a person,or forgiving a different
proportion of "bad actions".Perhaps most surprisingly looking more than twice didn't
generate an additional benefit."Information turned out to be a double-edged sword,so
that even when information was freely accessible, individuals were typically unable to use
all of it,”he adds.
Plotkin notes that the overall simplicity and reliability of their findings indicate that
this behavioral strategy might be old in human societies. The researchers see potential for
anthropologists(人类学家)and behavioral scientists to build on their work.
8.How does Plotkin's method of judging behavior differ from prior models?
A.It relies mainly on social media.
B.It emphasizes public reputation.
C.It requires less personal information.
D.It takes into account more behaviors.
9.What can be inferred about the "look twice"method?
A.It broadens the definition of reputation.
B.It develops alternative ways to cooperate.
A
英语试题(四)第3页(共8页)

C.It encourages concentration on good behaviors.
D.It aims to provide a solution to social problems.
10.What does the underlined word "consensus"in Paragraph 4 mean?

C.Motivation.
D.Benefits.
11.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about concerning the "look twice"strategy?
A.Its effectiveness.
B.Its influence.
C.Its disadvantages.

Traditional methods employed for the diagnosis()of mental-health conditions
require that patients engage in direct communication with a doctor. While these methods
appear sensible in theory, such assessments can,in practical terms, extend over a period
of several months, and furthermore, the diagnoses are ultimately subject to a degree of
subjectivity.
It is precisely for this reason that scientists are actively involved in experimental
efforts to automate this diagnostic process. For instance, large language models(LLMs)
possess the capacity to analyze literally recorded interviews in search of speech patterns
and contextual clues indicating psychological disorders.However,text-based AI has its
limitations.Cultural distinction, language barriers, and varying levels of fluency in
language can impact the results. It has also been demonstrated that LLMs have a tendency
to mirror the linguistic discriminations in society. In one study,an LLM failed to diagnose
depression in black patients compared with white patients.
Consequently, the novel methods currently under development do not focus on
individual words but on the way those words are spoken. An AI model, for example,is
intended to detect slight changes in a patient's voice. The researchers assume that
individuals with depression may possess distinctive ways of speaking that are not very
noticeable for the human to detect.
The system uses "pre-training",a technique by which the model is initially exposed
to vast quantities of general speech,to help it recognize complex speech patterns. These
patterns might include variations in rhythm,pitch()variability and voice quality that
human can rarely catch. This pre-trained acts as a linguistic tuning fork, enabling the
system to pick out complex variations in speech that might potentially signal depression,
without the necessity of comprehending the words themselves.Subsequently, the
researchers adjusted,or "fine-tuned"this general-purpose system specifically for the
detection of depression with the aid of recordings of patients with depression. This method
was 95%accurate when tasked with categorizing its severity based on one clinical rating
extent.
Diagnosis, though valuable,is only the first step.Different people with the same
condition often require customized treatments for the symptoms they find most troubling.
The next step for this promising technology seems self-evident-building AI models that
can help doctors personalize the treatments they give to patients.

Whether you're in high school or college, presentations have become an essential part
of academic life.Yet,many students find themselves nervous, unsure,or even
unprepared when it comes to creating and delivering a presentation.16
Before diving into your presentation, take a moment to think about your audience.
Are you presenting to your classmates, teachers,or even a broader school community?
17 If you're talking to classmates, you might be able to make the tone more casual. If
it's for teachers,consider focusing on depth,clarity,and structure.
A key to any great presentation is simplicity.18 Stick to one idea per slide and
make your content clear and to the point.Bear in mind that your audience is there to hear
you. They are not to read paragraphs on a screen.
Visuals are a powerful tool in presentations.19 Meanwhile, they also help to
explain complex ideas more effectively. But,no matter how visually appealing your slides
are, your delivery needs to be smooth.Practice your speech several times to make sure
you're comfortable with the flow and timing of your presentation. It's also helpful to
rehearse()in front of a friend or family member who can give you feedback.
20 Summarize the main points, emphasize the key takeaways, and provide a
clear call to action, especially if you need your audience to do something after the
presentation like turning in feedback forms or starting a class discussion.

said after practice. His voice was calm but firm, the way it always was when he saw
something wrong.I sighed,knowing I couldn't avoid the conversation."Yeah,Coach?"
He studied me for a moment, his eyes serious."You're not yourself lately.I've also
noticed there's tension between you and Ryan. What's going on?"
I hesitated,then said,“Nothing,I'm fine.”
Coach didn't buy it."I've been around long enough to know when something's
weighing on a player. You're not just dealing with basketball issues, are you?"
I finally admitted,my throat tight and my eyes starting to water,"I have some
family problems...my parents had an accident, and I've had to take care of them.
Coach nodded,understanding."That's a lot to handle.But Ryan...he's a tough guy,
and you two are teammates, and the team only works if you're united.Let's talk things
through.”
The next day.Coach pulled Ryan and me aside. The conversation was awkward at
