The Age of Majority
In most countries, [1]turning① 18 marks② the start of adulthood③. But what does reaching this milestone④, the age of majority, really mean? Will you be completely in charge of⑤ your own life and able to express yourself in new and exciting ways? What new responsibilities will this freedom bring? Here, three young people tell us [2]what turning 18 means, or meant, to them.

I can't wait to be 18. One reason is that although I've been working [3]ever since leaving school, I won't be voting in the next general election⑥.Why?Because I still won't be old enough. Surely, if you're old enough to earn a wage⑦ and pay taxes⑧, you should be allowed to have a say⑨ on how the government spends them! I've also been taking driving lessons, and in fact I will be taking my driving test on the very⑩ day I turn 18. My mum worries about me being behind the wheel⑪.As an ambulance driver, she's seen a lot of car accidents [4]involving⑫ teenagers and thinks the legal age⑬ for getting a driving licence should be 21. But I think I'm already mature enough to understand [5]that driving a car also means taking responsibility for my life and the lives of other people.
[3]此处“ever since leaving school”(=ever since I left school)在句中作时间状语。
[4]此处为动词-ing形式作定语,其中“the legal age for getting a driving licence should be 21”是省略连接词that的宾语从句。

I celebrated my 18th birthday just before I went to university. I expected to feel instantly⑭ different, [6]as if I had closed the door on⑮ my childhood⑯ and stepped into a whole new adult world. But it wasn't like that. When I woke up the next day, there were still [7]rules to obey and lessons to attend⑰.In fact, the change has been more subtle⑱ and gradual⑲ [8]than I imagined. Instead of being the selfish⑳ teenager [9]I used to be, I have begun to feel more aware of other people and to develop a stronger sense of social responsibility. To give an example㉑, I will be signing an organ donation agreement㉒ this time tomorrow. This was a big decision for me and I made it without asking my parents (although I knew they would approve㉓) . Turning 18 also changed the way [10]that society viewed me.I was really surprised when a bank contacted㉔ me with a credit card offer. Of course, I would like to have more freedom with money and no doubt㉕ I will be getting a credit card at some point㉖ , but I currently㉗ don't have a steady income㉘ , [11]so getting a credit card might tempt㉙me to spend more money than I have!
[10]此处为that引导的限制性定语从句,先行词为the way;that可以替换为in which,也可以省略。

People say that 18 marks a new chapter in our lives, and [12]that we should become more independent. I used to believe this, but the reality for me has been very different. [13]I assumed㉚ I'd already have a well-paid job and that I'd be moving into a rented apartment as soon as I turned 18, but how wrong I was!My librarian's㉛ salary means that I'll be living at home with my parents for a while longer. Because I contribute to the household bills㉜ and my commute㉝ to work is quite expensive, I [14]find it hard to save any money. I'll be starting a new job next month, however, so maybe things will get easier. [15]I know I could get a bank loan to pay the deposit㉞ on my very own apartment, but I don't feel ready to㉟ make that kind of commitment㊱, and I do like my mom's cooking. I guess some responsibilities are more about attitude than age.
[14]此处it作形式宾语,hard作宾语补足语,动词不定式短语to save any money作真正的宾语。
do like是“do/does/did+动词原形”结构,强调谓语动词。

The Little Prince
Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent① picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval② forest. It was a picture of a boa constrictor③ in the act of④ swallowing⑤ an animal. Here is a copy of the drawing.
In the book it said:“Boa constrictors swallow their prey⑥ whole, without chewing⑦ it. After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through⑧ the six months that they need for digestion⑨.”
I pondered⑩ deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It looked like this:
I showed my masterpiece⑪ to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.
But they answered: “Frighten? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?”
My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor [1]digesting⑫ an elephant.[2]But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing:I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to [3]have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this:
The grown-ups' response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside⑬ my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to⑭ geography, history, arithmetic⑮ and grammar. [4]That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career as a painter. I had been disheartened⑯ by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and [5] it is tiresome⑰ for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.
[5]此处为“it is+adj.+(for sb.) to do sth.”
So then I chose another profession⑱, and learned to pilot⑲ airplanes. I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful to me. At a glance⑳ I can distinguish㉑ China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.
In the course of this life, I have had a great many㉒ encounters㉓ with a great many people who have been concerned with㉔ matters of consequence㉕. I have lived a great deal among grown-ups. I have seen them intimately㉖ , [6]close at hand㉗. And that hasn't much improved my opinion of them.
[7]Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clear-sighted㉘, I tried the experiment㉙ of showing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always kept.[8]I would try to find out, so, if this was a person of true understanding. But, [9]whoever it was, he, or she, would always say:
“That is a hat.”
Then I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors, or primeval forests, or stars. I would bring myself down to his level. I would talk to him about bridge, and golf㉚ , and politics㉛, and neckties㉜. And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to㉝ have met such a sensible man.
(Excerpt from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry)
