Dear Editor,
As I took part in the summer camp about personal life choices, I started to analyze my choices, especially what I did to relax and how it was affecting my whole life.
After starting high school, I felt stressed out and always relaxed by playing computer games. I got so absorbed that I played the games day and night. Playing was fun, but I felt even more worn out afterwards! So after the camp, I realized that it was very, very important to adjust my lifestyle. I decided to take control of my life and find other ways to relax.
It was a big struggle not to join my friends in playing online games as I'm mad for them. However, I realised that to succeed in quitting, I had to replace it with something else. So I thought about what to try. Rock climbing, bowling, watching comedies, and playing basketball were the things I thought of doing instead.
Now my dad and I go rock climbing together monthly! It has enhanced the quality of my life, improving my health and increasing my happiness. I get refreshed through climbing, spend more time with my dad, and get to meet new friends.
After six months of trying out new ways of relaxing, I feel much more energetic. I feel that I can change myself for the better. And if that's true for me, then it might truly be possible to change the world for the better. As Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
Sincerely,
George Fielding

(2024·德州高二期中)Are you always looking at your mobile phone as you're walking, playing with it as you're studying, and unwilling to put it down as you go to bed?Tired of a life controlled by their mobile phones, many young people are appealing to extreme measures to kick the habit.
A discussion group called the Screen-Free Project on a community network now has more than 33,000 members, who promise to “quit” their mobile phones. That generally does not mean they will abandon their phones, but means they will seek to cut down on their use of greatly.
That is a very hard thing to do, particularly when cashless payments are everywhere in China. One way to cut your mobile phone screen time is the mobile phone isolation box. Users simply put their mobile phone in the box and set a time lock that will ban them from having access to the phone for a set time.
Lin Tianqi, a student at Beijing Technology And Business University, bought an isolation box recently online. She has attached several eye-catching stickers to the box:“Happiness will find you when you are working.” and “The harder you work, the luckier you are.” The stickers help remind her of the need to face up to reality.
This summer, Lin says, she will be busy preparing for autumn career recruiting (招聘) and the postgraduate entrance exam. With so much to do, if her mobile phone took up most of her time, it would influence her prospects largely.
Though using a physical box to reduce mobile phone use may not seem so useful, it appears a good thing to the market. However, Liang Wenyu, another college student, looked down on these “useless” attempts.“It is meaningless to use the isolation box—you might as well lock yourself up, as simple as that,” he says. “I can understand why they attach these inspiring stickers on the box because they lack discipline.Self-disciplined people will succeed without such tricks.”

(2024·本溪高中高二月考)Today, with most of us owning a smartphone that allows us to post pictures or videos on social media wherever and whenever we want, oversharing has become unprecedentedly harder to avoid. But the tricky thing is that people are unaware that they're oversharing. It can only be triggered (引起) by their friends and family. A survey shows that every two in three people in the US think their friends share too much on social media.
Oversharing can have negative influences. For instance, it can put your personal information at risk. When you update your status, or simply recall an experience on social networking sites, chances are that you are divulging critical personal information.
According to a Canadian survey, 45% of people aged 18-34 “overshare” their financial information online. “Young people share payment card information via e-mail, loan out their cards, and don't keep their PIN confidential,” said a reporter. This behavior mirrors similar habits of sharing personal information on social media sites. They're really not totally aware of who has access to this information and who else can be seeing this information and what could be done with it.
“Oversharing contributes to a larger culture in which such behavior is considered appropriate or even desirable,” said Seidman, associate professor at Albright College in the US. Elizabeth Bernstein, a US-based educator, said, “The constant increase of oversharing is partially connected with the wild use of social media as a subconscious (下意识的) attempt to control anxiety. We actually use a lot of mental energy to try to manage other persons' impressions of us by oversharing.”
Moreover, oversharing online can damage effective communication in real life. “Having such easy access to so many people makes communication superficial (浅表的),” said Chen, a psychologist at South China Normal University. “In the end, the lack of deep communication hurts strong social bonds, particularly friendships.”
