【改编自人教选必三 U4】
We have been struggling for days, but things on Elephant Island are going from bad to worse. We are now crowded together under one of our boats on the rocky shore of this miserable place. Soon after we arrived, Shackleton left us to find help on South Georgia Island, 1,320 kilometres away—the voyage was too dangerous and difficult for all of us to make it in our small boats. If Shackleton fails, will we have any hope of rescue? No. No navy in the world ever stops at Elephant Island, and no one else knows that we are here.
课后巩固·多维提能
I feel low. It's cold and windy. The island has no plants. Sometimes we are able to catch a seal or a penguin to eat. Otherwise, there is no food. I try to think of happier things: decent food, warm and dry clothes, a cosy bedroom, sunny days, and my mother's face...However, these happy memories are soon interrupted by a sudden cold rush of air.
课后巩固·多维提能
I shouted, “Shut the door!”
“Hold on now, Perce. Don't you go turning into another Tom,” came the reply. “We've caught another penguin, so it's penguin soup tonight!”

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2024·成都七中高二期中)At 74 James Patterson has sold many copies of his novels globally, making him one of the highest paid authors in the world. “I do not work for a living. I play for a living. I love doing it,” Patterson tells CNBC. But Patterson's road to success didn't happen overnight. He started writing as a parergon (副业) and he faced a lot of rejections before getting his first book published.
课后巩固·多维提能
Patterson grew up in the woods in Newburgh, New York with an insurance salesman father and a schoolteacher mother. “Despite having dreams of being a writer, the idea always seemed presumptuous,” Patterson says. “But after reading books by James Joyce, they really turned me on to reading, and then I started writing,” he adds.
课后巩固·多维提能
After college, Patterson got his first job as a junior copywriter at the advertising agency J.Walter Thompson. While climbing the corporate ladder, Patterson wrote his first book, The Thomas Berryman Number in the mid-70s. “The book got turned down by 31 publishers,” Patterson says. But after it was finally published in 1976, it won an Edgar Award for the best-first novel. The Edgar Award, which is named after Edgar Allan Poe, honours the best writers in mystery fiction and non-fiction.
课后巩固·多维提能
Despite publishing his first book at age 26, Patterson didn't have a best-seller until he was 40. “It wasn't like all of a sudden,” he says. In fact, Patterson kept his day job for decades and got promoted to CEO of J. Walter Thompson in 1988. Patterson says during that time, he would read well over 100 books a year to help spark his creativity. “I have a huge imagination and I'm constantly asking, ‘What about this? What about that?’” he says.
课后巩固·多维提能
Despite his success, Patterson says he doesn't like to give advice, especially about writing. But he credits his own success to his work ethic and passion. “I also don't take myself too seriously,” he says. “Yeah, I sell a lot of books, but so what?”

In recent times, with the rise of electric cars, the idea of fuelling cars with solar energy has also gained in popularity.Electric cars—even though they run on electricity and don't use fossil fuels—are still not green! People suffer from the misunderstanding that not using fossil fuels means “green”, which is kind of false, considering the electricity we use is generated by burning the very same fuels!
课后巩固·多维提能
What if your car had solar panels (太阳能电池板) that could charge it? Now that would indeed be a green machine! However, although we would like to use this energy source in our car, the efficiency of currently used solar panels is subject to several different factors.
课后巩固·多维提能
Firstly, solar panels occupy a large amount of space. An average car has an area of 10-25 sq.ft.on the roof, which,if fully covered by solar panels, can generate between 50-150 W under ideal conditions. This is hardly enough power to support a light bulb! Also, the sunlight's temperature needs to be ideal, as extremely high temperatures can reduce the efficiency of solar panels.Cars must work in all weather conditions,so if a solar panel limits the car's functionality, it becomes practically useless.More importantly, the cost of the panels and the development required to power the electronics using the sun's energy outweighs the benefits that solar panels provide.
课后巩固·多维提能
Most cars today that have solar roofs use solar energy to power only a few basic functions. While there is still time before we will be able to drive cars fully powered by solar energy, there are some improvements, such as solar power stations, which are being designed to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels for electricity.
课后巩固·多维提能
Personally, I think solar-powered vehicles are surely the future, although not the near future. As the cost of solar panels continues to fall and their efficiency increases, things will begin to look much “brighter” for this sustainable option!
