If you were to walk through each of the Louvre’s 400 galleries (展厅), you would cover about 14.5 km. Stop to look at each artwork for 15 seconds, and you would be there for about 145 hours. As a result, few of the nearly 9 million people who visit the Louvre each year leave feeling as if they have truly mastered it.
Elaine Sciolino, formerly the leader of The New York Times, has volunteered herself as a tour guide. In the book Adventures in the Louvre, she does not try to take readers through every room or write the museum’s long and colorful history. Instead, she focuses on central topics and small details that will interest them.
The writer has a reporter’s knack for raising a good question. Of all the faces in the Louvre, “Who is the fairest one of all?” she asks Sébastien Allard, director of paintings, who offers five suggestions (by Jacques-Louis David, Rembrandt, Pisanello, Titian and Johannes Vermeer). Many Louvre workers think the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, the world’s most famous artwork, is not as good as people say. Yet around four-fifths of visitors come mainly to see it and pay little attention to other treasures.
Even people who understand the collection well can still learn something. For example, about 1,700 works have “mnr” on their labels (标签), which stands for Musées Nationaux Récupération, or National Museums Recovery. That means they are looked after by the Louvre but aren’t part of its collection.
For the Louvre, history ended in 1848 — later masterpieces are in France’s other national museums — but its change continues. Recently French government started a renovation (翻新) costing $800m-900m, which would, among other things, give the Mona Lisa her own gallery. Visitors will have even more need of a knowledgeable guide.
8. Why does the author list the numbers in paragraph 1?
A. To prove the value of artworks.
B. To recommend the best tour path.
C. To show the large size of the Louvre.
D To stress the speed of viewing artworks.
9. What does the book Adventures in the Louvre focus on?
A. Every room of the Louvre.
B. The long history of the Louvre.
C. Well-known artworks in the Louvre.
D. Specific topics and details in the Louvre.
10. What does the underlined word “knack” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Hobby. B. Skill. C. Task. D. Chance.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Mona Lisa: A Perfect Work
B. The Louvre: Facts You May Not Know
C. The Mona Lisa: The Star of the Louvre
D. The Louvre: A Must-Visit for Art Lovers
C 9. D 10. B 11. B

根据第一段中的“If you were to walk through each of the Louvre’s 400 galleries (展厅), you would cover about 14.5 km. Stop to look at each artwork for 15 seconds, and you would be there for about 145 hours.(如果你走过卢浮宫的400个展厅,行程约有14.5公里。如果每件艺术品停留15秒观赏,你会在那里待上约145个小时。)”可知,作者列举这些数字是为了直观展现卢浮宫的规模十分庞大。故选C项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“In the book Adventures in the Louvre, she does not try to take readers through every room or write the museum’s long and colorful history. Instead, she focuses on central topics and small details that will interest them.(在《卢浮宫奇遇记》一书中,她并未试图带着读者走遍每个展厅,也没有撰写这座博物馆漫长而多彩的历史。相反,她聚焦于能引起读者兴趣的核心主题和微小细节。)”可知,《卢浮宫奇遇记》这本书聚焦于卢浮宫中的特定主题和细节。故选D项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“The writer has a reporter’s knack for raising a good question. Of all the faces in the Louvre, “Who is the fairest one of all?” she asks Sébastien Allard, director of paintings, who offers five suggestions (by Jacques-Louis David, Rembrandt, Pisanello, Titian and Johannes Vermeer).

A major study with over 80,000 people has shown that speaking many languages can greatly slow down the brain’s aging process and help prevent cognitive decline Published in the journal Nature Aging, the research finds that multilingual (多语言的) people are half as likely to show signs of speedy biological aging compared to those who speak only one language.
According to Agustin Ibáñez, a scientist of the study, the research aimed to address a long-standing question in aging studies: whether multilingualism really slows down aging. While earlier studies had suggested that speaking many languages improves cognitive functions like memory and attention, many of those studies had problems. Their sample (样本) sizes were small and their ways to measure aging weren’t practical, so the results weren’t the same.
This new research, however, has been praised for its size and dependability. Christos Pliatsikas, a professor at the University of Reading, noted that the findings could bring a big change to the field.
The research group looked at information from 86,000 healthy people. These people were between 51 and 90 years old and came from 27 European countries. They worked out each person’s “biobehavioral age gap (差值)”. This gap is the difference between how old a person really is and how old they’re expected to be based on things like heart health, how they live, and their educational level. A larger gap suggests faster aging. The researchers also discovered that people who spoke only one language were two times more likely to have a big biobehavioral age gap. Moreover, the protective effect increased with the number of languages spoken.
Even though the research subjects only self-reported their language skills without detailed examination, the large and different sample helped researchers explain things like wealth and background. Agustin Ibáñez stressed that the study strongly supports the idea that multilingualism itself — not other things — helps protect the brain during aging. He also called for future studies to include non-European populations.
The researchers hope their findings will influence educational rules to improve language learning, viewing multilingualism as a powerful tool for healthy cognitive aging.
12. What is the main finding of the study mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. Education reduces cognitive decline.
B. Language learning avoids brain aging.
C. Multilingualism benefits brain function.
D. Multilingual people have speedy aging.
13. What does the phrase “biobehavioral age gap” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. A person’s actual age (in years).
B. The speed of a person’s aging.
C. A person’s educational level.
D. The condition of one’s physical age.
14. What is Agustin Ibañez’s attitude towards the study’s finding?
A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
15 Where is this text most likely taken from?
A. A practical guide. B. A personal blog.
C. A language textbook. D. A science news report.
C 13. B 14. A 15. D

根据本段小标题“Dream big; act small.(立大志向;做小事)”以及上文“If you aim too high, you’ll never hit your writing goal.(目标定得太高,永远无法实现写作理想)”、下文“If you write two hundred words each working day, by Friday you’ll have one thousand words.(每个工作日写200词,到周五就能积累1000词)”可知,空格处需贴合“从小事做起”的核心,建议写作从简单的小步骤开始。
根据本段小标题“Write down specific writing goals.(写下具体的写作目标)”以及上文“Studies have found that people who wrote down specific actions required to achieve their goals were three times more likely to succeed than those who wrote down their dreams in unclear terms.(研究发现,将实现目标所需的具体行动写下来的人,其成功的概率是那些用模糊的措辞写下自己梦想的人的三倍)”、下文的具体目标举例可知,空格处需强调写作目标必须清晰、具体。
根据上文“Julia Cameron, writer of the best-selling book The Artist’s Way, says that what defines (定义) a writer is showing up at the page, no matter what.(畅销书《艺术家之路》的作者朱莉娅・卡梅伦说,界定一名作家的关键,是无论如何都要坐下来提笔写作)”可知,空格处需进一步解释这句话的含义。
根据本段小标题“Join a writing community.(加入写作社群)”以及上文“Join a discussion group for writers, join a writing circle or take a writing class.(加入作家讨论组、写作圈,或参加写作课程)”、下文“Writing can be a lonely business and finding out that most writers meet the same difficulties and have the same concerns can be comforting.(写作本是一场孤独的修行,而当你发现大多数作家都面临着同样的困境、怀揣着同样的顾虑时,内心便会感到些许慰藉)”可知,空格处需说明加入写作社群的意义。G选项“Connecting with like-minded persons keeps you encouraged.(和志同道合的人相处,能让你始终保持动力)”紧扣“写作社群”的主题,“like-minded persons”对应社群中的同好,“keeps you encouraged”衔接后文的“感到慰藉”,体现社群的精神支撑作用,符合语境。故选G项。

On a bright Saturday morning, Kell Morris, 61, and his wife, Joanna, were hiking east of Seward. The sun was shining as they carefully walked along a rocky riverbed, heading towards a lake at the foot of a large hill. They were laughing and enjoying the beautiful nature, completely unaware that their peaceful hike was about to turn into a fight for survival.
As they made their way up the river, Kell climbed a small bank to get a closer look at an object he thought was an old, unused ski. Suddenly, the ground under him broke apart. He was caught in a rockslide. When the sliding stopped, Kell found himself face-down in the icy river, a huge, half-moon-shaped stone on his back. He was trapped.
The water was very cold. Kell struggled to keep his head above the rising water. His wife, Joanna, rushed to help. She tried with all her strength to lift the huge rock, but it wouldn’t move. Kell felt the dangerous cold spreading through his body. “I’m not going to last long in this water,” he thought to himself. He began to fear this was where his adventurous life would end.
They were in a faraway mountain with no phone signal (信号). Knowing time was important, Joanna told Kell to “stay put” and hurried off to find a signal to call for help. Alone, Kell fought to stay conscious (意识清醒的), the icy water weakening his strength.
In Seward, Fire Leader Clinton Crites received the call. He knew ground conditions were too hard for vehicles (车辆) or a quick hike. A rescue on foot would take too long. Luckily, a local helicopter company agreed to help. A helicopter carried rescuers to the site, where they had to jump a short distance to the ground because landing was impossible.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
They found Kell still trapped and the water was higher.

They found Kell still trapped and the water was higher. Joanna was holding his head up, trying to keep him out of the icy river. The rescuers quickly checked the situation. They used special air bags, ropes, and other tools to try to lift the rock. After several minutes, they managed to move it. He was immediately covered in warm cloths and carried to the waiting helicopter and then to the nearest hospital. Though tired and shaking uncontrollably, Kell managed a weak smile, with a ray of life returning to his eyes.
When Kell woke up in the hospital, he saw his teary wife. She was sitting by his bedside, holding his hand. “Thank goodness you’re awake,” she said, her voice filled with emotion. Kell smiled weakly and touched her hand. He knew he had been lucky to survive. The doctor came in to check on him, telling him he would recover. Kell felt thankful for the quick response of the rescuers. He made a call to the leader of the rescue team, expressing his deep thankfulness. This life-threatening hiking accident turned into a heart-warming story of survival, love, and thankfulness, showing the power of human kindness and the value of life.

17-year-old Marcus Skeet completed the cross-country run from Land’s End to John O’Groats on Thursday, May 29, 2025, a classic challenge across the mainland UK. After raising about £130,000 for a mental (心理的) health charity, he said the 58 days of running had been “the best months of his life”. Marcus is the first person under 18 to have completed the adventure.
The teenager who lives with his parents in Malton, North Yorkshire, has openly talked about the challenges he faced with his physical and mental health. “When I was 15, I tried to end my own life. I was 145 kg and suffering badly from anxiety.”
Marcus started to run one mile a day before taking part in his first marathon (马拉松) in September, joined by his friend Russ Cook, who ran the length of Africa. Encouraged by Mr. Cook, Marcus said his dream was to run the length of the UK, and he hoped to raise £20,000 for the mental health charity Mind.
Marcus said the journey was “very difficult” and that at times it was wet, dark and a “lonely adventure”. But there were also some unforgettable moments, from running alongside deer to enjoying amazing sunrises and sunsets. “It’s been beautiful. The last few weeks have been dream-like,” he added.
His challenge caught the attention of famous people, and on day four of the run he received a special message. Four-time Olympic medal holder Sir Mo Farah posted on social media saying: “Keep going, young man! Anything is possible.” Former NFL star JJ Watt also sent a message, saying: “Just over a year ago, you began a journey to change your life and along the way, you changed the lives of so many others.”
Marcus said he met many “amazing” people along the way, but one of his best moments was when someone drove four hours to find him on the road and share their story about mental health.

If you were to walk through each of the Louvre’s 400 galleries (展厅) you would cover about 14.5 km.
D. To stress the speed of viewing artworks.
9. What does the book Adventures in the Louvre focus on?
A. Every room of the Louvre.

A. A person’s actual age (in years).
B. The speed of a person’s aging.
C. A person’s educational level.
D. The condition of one’s physical age.
14. What is Agustin Ibañez’s attitude towards the study’s finding?
A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
15. Where is this text most likely taken from?
A. A practical guide. B. A personal blog.
C. A language textbook. D. A science news report.

His wife Joanna, rushed to help.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
They found Kell still trapped and the water was higher.
