Lake Wilderness Arboretum and Maple Valley Library have partnered together to bring a StoryWalk® to Maple Valley. StoryWalk® is an innovative approach to encouraging people to get out and walk while enjoying wonderful children’s books. With her wealth of experience, Sharon Chastain, the children’s librarian at Maple Valley Library, selects the best children’s books for the project. Then the pages are put in frames along Arboretum’s Main Looping Trail, so as you walk, you can read the book one page at a time while enjoying being outside. Our hope is that this feature will provide people with a new way to see, learn and experience the amazing world that we live in.
The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier and developed in cooperation with Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Since its start in 2007, the project has been warmly welcomed in 50 states and 12 countries.
March StoryWalk®:
Looking for a reason to get outside? Take a walk at the Arboretum and read this month’s StoryWalk® selection, Trillions of Trees by Kurt Cyrus. This fun, rhyming story follows a brother and sister as they turn a misunderstood phone call into a way to improve their environment. Hard work, getting dirty, and accepting help from others can lead the two on a journey of planting a trillion trees.

Every morning on the island of Oahu, students at Pū’ōhala Elementary gather on a field as towering mountains watch them from the mist. Their day starts with songs in ‘Õlelo Hawai’i, the islands’ native language, restating values of respect and justice that their teachers hope will guide them through their education, and throughout their lives.
Like most kids of their age, they’re not concerned about the significance of the language they’re learning. Still, they have a weighty responsibility: to receive the torch (火炬) and ensure the security of ‘Õlelo Hawai’i for future generations.
It was only 50 years ago that the language was on the edge of extinction. Though the situation is much improved, in many ways ‘Õlelo Hawai’i is still on life support. Teachers say there’s a huge enthusiasm for school kids to learn the language, but as they grow up, they’re encouraged to focus on “more useful” subjects and use English, which are believed to assist them in achieving success in their work. In 2016, there were 18,610 Hawaiian speakers on the islands.
“One hundred thousand is the approximate number of speakers needed to consider the language safe” says Solomon, professor of Hawaiian language at University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. “The idea is that there are enough people passing it on to the next generation, socializing their children to use the language in all domains of life, to express all thoughts and needs and desires.”
Fortunately, the kids of Pū’ōhala Elementary will take the responsibility to continue the work of the current young adults defending the language, expanding access to ‘Õlelo Hawai’i in part through social media, and making the language a practical skill in adulthood. These youth, along with those committed to recovering the language from previous generations, share their hopes for the better.
4. What are the students at Pū’ōhala Elementary expected to do?
A. Figure out the value of life.
B. Go out of the island of Oahu.
C. Pass their native language down.
D. Draw people’s attention to folk songs.
5. For what are most students persuaded to abandon ‘Õlelo Hawai’i when growing up?
A. Lack of enthusiasm. B. Career development.
C. The improved situation. D. Little educational support.
6. What does Solomon say about ‘Õlelo Hawai’i?
A. It’s used in all walks of life.
B. It’s considered a safe language.
C. It demands more speakers to be safe.
D. It gains much support from social media.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of ‘Õlelo Hawai’i?
A. Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Unclear. D. Indifferent.
C 5. B 6. C 7. B

根据第二段中“Still, they have a weighty responsibility: to receive the torch (火炬) and ensure the security of ‘Õlelo Hawai’i for future generations. (不过,他们肩负着一项重大责任:接过这枚火炬,并确保“夏威夷语”这一文化遗产能为子孙后代得到妥善保护。)”可知,这所小学的学生们被期望将他们的母语传承下去。故选C项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Teachers say there’s a huge enthusiasm for school kids to learn the language, but as they grow up, they’re encouraged to focus on “more useful” subjects and use English, which are believed to assist them in achieving success in their work. (老师们表示,学生们对于学习这门语言有着极大的热情,但随着年龄的增长,他们会被鼓励去专注于“更有用”的学科,并使用英语,因为人们认为这有助于他们在工作中取得成功。)”可知,大多数学生长大后被说服放弃夏威夷语是出于职业发展的考虑。故选B项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“One hundred thousand is the approximate number of speakers needed to consider the language safe (大约需要10万人使用该语言,才能认为这种语言是安全的。)”
根据最后一段“Fortunately, the kids of Pū’ōhala Elementary will take the responsibility to continue the work of the current young adults defending the language, expanding access to ‘Õlelo Hawai’i in part through social media, and making the language a practical skill in adulthood. These youth, along with those committed to recovering the language from previous generations, share their hopes for the better.

Cupping (拔火罐) is an alternative therapy which uses suction (抽吸) to increase blood flow and potentially reduce pain. As well as getting cupping done by a professional, there’s a growing range of at-home cupping devices now available, ranging from silicon cups to smart electronic powered devices. They claim to offer the benefits at home, helping with pain reduction, increased circulation and relaxation.
Cupping has been practised for thousands of years, and can be traced back to ancient Chinese and Egyptian medicine. Recently, cupping has become famous as a form of alternative medicine, thanks to the red marks it can leave and celebrity fans like Michael Phelps.
Glass, plastic or silicon cups are placed onto the skin for several minutes creating suction on localised areas. It’s thought this encourages blood flow to improve circulation and reduce pain, although there is no firm agreement on how it works and no single theory can explain the full effects of cupping.
While it’s popular, there’s only limited scientific evidence on the benefits of cupping. A study found it can be useful to decrease pain levels and improve blood flow to affected areas with low adverse effects.
“The suction causes smaller capillaries (毛细血管) in the skin to rupture, causing the circular bruise (瘀伤), and keeping the body in repair mode as the body has to repair these small capillaries and make fresh blood flow to the area days after the treatment,” Dr Tom Ingegno, author of The Cupping Book says.
Cupping is low risk, but it’s not suitable for everyone, especially pregnant women, cancer patients and those with organ failure.
Cupping is known as a complementary treatment and sports performance coach Arj Thiruchelvam believes that cupping devices do have a place but they should be used as an additional bonus to other methods. “Sleep, nutrition, light cardiovascular work and regular stretching all seem to have a more solid evidence-base for recovery,” he says.
8. Which of the following makes at-home cupping an alternative therapy?
A. Its budget-friendly cost. B. Its benefits and convenience.
C. Its professional guidance. D. Its safe and labour-saving devices.
9. Why is Michael Phelps mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To tell us the history of cupping. B. To prove how cupping functions.
C. To show how cupping gets popular. D. To reveal celebrities’ preferences.
10. What does the underlined word “rupture” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Heal. B. Form. C. Bend. D. Break.
11. What does Thiruchelvam think of cupping?
A. It is good for skin repair.
B. It has a certain positive effect.
C. It is suitable for home health care.
D. It can’t be replaced by other treatments.
B 9. C 10. D 11. B
根据第一段“Cupping (拔火罐) is an alternative therapy which uses suction (抽吸) to increase blood flow and potentially reduce pain. As well as getting cupping done by a professional, there’s a growing range of at-home cupping devices now available, ranging from silicon cups to smart electronic powered devices.(拔火罐是一种替代疗法,它利用抽吸作用来促进血液循环,并可能减轻疼痛。除了由专业人士进行拔火罐治疗外,如今市面上还出现了越来越多可在家使用的拔火罐器具,从硅胶罐到智能电子驱动设备应有尽有。)”可知,其安全且省力的设备使家庭拔罐成为一种替代疗法。故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Recently, cupping has become famous as a form of alternative medicine, thanks to the red marks it can leave and celebrity fans like Michael Phelps.(最近,由于拔火罐会留下红色印记,且拥有像迈克尔·菲尔普斯这样的名人粉丝,它作为一种替代疗法而声名大噪。)”
根据划线词后文“as the body has to repair these small capillaries and make fresh blood flow to the area days after the treatment(因为在治疗结束后的数天内,身体需要修复这些细小的毛细血管,并促使新鲜血液流向该区域)”可知,抽吸会导致皮肤上的小毛细血管破裂,使身体处于修复模式,故划线词rupture意思是“破裂”,和Break意思相近。
根据最后一段“Cupping is known as a complementary treatment and sports performance coach Arj Thiruchelvam believes that cupping devices do have a place but they should be used as an additional bonus to other methods. “Sleep, nutrition, light cardiovascular work and regular stretching all seem to have a more solid evidence-base for recovery,” he says.(拔火罐被视为一种辅助疗法,运动表现教练阿尔杰·蒂鲁切尔瓦姆认为,拔火罐器具确实有一席之地,但应作为其他方法的额外补充。他说:“睡眠、营养、轻度有氧运动和定期拉伸似乎都有更坚实的恢复依据。”)”可知,Arj Thiruchelvam认为拔火罐应该用来辅助其他治疗。故选B。

The feeling of love is the very best feeling in the world. Love is always available, as available as the air we breathe. Yet most people do not go through their days filled with love, joy and peace. Instead, they feel empty and alone, and often turn to various addictions to fill the emptiness.
One of the addictions many people turn to is getting love from others. Believing that people need to be their source of love, they try in various ways to gain control over getting love from others. Through physical appearance, accomplishments, threats, anger and blame, people try to manipulate (操纵) others into giving them the love, attention and approval they need. Sometimes this works for the moment, but like food, it is only for the moment.
Other people try to get filled through the giving of love. The problem here is that unless you are first bringing love into yourself and then sharing your love from a full place within, the giving of love becomes just another manipulation to get love. This is caretaking — giving to get. It does not lead to feeling filled up with love, peace and joy. Rather, it leads to feeling drained, used and resentful (气愤的), since rarely do others give back the love you hope for.
The highest experience in life with another person is the sharing of love. It is truly an amazing experience. It can happen in person, over the phone and on social media. Time and place are irrelevant—love is an energy that can be experienced from any distance. A circle of love is experienced when two or more people are sharing love from a full place within.
If you have never had the experience of sharing love, you may not realize what you are missing. I hope you keep in mind that only by doing your inner work will you ever be able to experience the greatest experience on the planet — the sharing of love!
12. What does the author think of getting people to give love?
A. It is practical. B. It won’t last long. C. It is reliable. D. It never fails.
13. Why does giving love cause negative feelings?
A. It doesn’t produce desired results.
B. It leads to a person being misunderstood.
C. It calls for constant caring for others.
D. It ends up with an empty place within.
14. What can be learned about sharing love?
A. It occurs in a fixed way. B. It takes time to see its effects.
C. It involves more complicated context. D. It goes beyond time and space.
15. What does the author intend to do in the text?
A. Define happiness. B. Seek the missing self.
C. Provide guidance. D. Encourage reflection.
B 13. A 14. D 15. C

根据第三段“Rather, it leads to feeling drained, used and resentful (气愤的), since rarely do others give back the love you hope for.(相反,这会导致你感到精疲力竭、被利用以及心怀怨恨,因为很少有人会像你所期望的那样回报你的爱。)” 故选A。
根据第四段“Time and place are irrelevant — love is an energy that can be experienced from any distance. A circle of love is experienced when two or more people are sharing love from a full place within.(时间和地点无关紧要——爱是一种能量,无论相隔多远都能被感知。当两个或两个以上的人从内心充盈着爱的地方分享爱时,便能体验到爱的循环。)”可知,关于分享爱,我们可以了解到它超越了时间和空间。故选D。
【15题详解】

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It’s not so long ago that contactless card payments were exciting and new, but the technology is already old hat. The new, better way to pay for things in shops? By using your phone to make a contactless payment.
Because traditionally, when you have paid with a card tap or using a chip and pin machine, ultimately the shop you are buying from will be noting down all of your card details. ___16___ And this could be a problem — it means that if the shop is hacked or plays fast and loose with its data, you could find your card number exposed to the world.
___17___ When you tap to pay with your device, it generates a unique ID number for that deal and sends that instead. So you can pay for your goods and the shop can get your money. No one needs to share any sensitive data.
It’s also more effective against the threat of thefts. If a pickpocket steals your card, they can immediately use up the money. But if they get your phone, when the phone goes to pay, it will typically perform a biometric check.___18___ It will ask for a finger-print or use the camera to look at your face to check that you are who you say you are.
___19___ Because of this added security, the limit (限额) is typically higher than for contactless cards. In the UK, it’s around £100 for most retailers — though some shops including most supermarkets let you spend much more with just a tap of the phone.
Want to give it a try? To actually set things up, go to your Wallet app and follow the instructions. Typically this starts by scanning your card with your phone. Then it will automatically recognise the numbers and connect with your bank. Usually you receive a text message with a special code on it. When you pay, hold your phone over the payment machine, and pay for your goods! ___20___
A. And then, well, you’re done.
B. It helps to build the client list.
C. The setup process varies with banks.
D. Phone payments, by contrast, are smarter.
E. And phone payments are increasingly convenient too.
F. Therefore, it knows which bank account to take the money from.
G. It is a process of identifying a person by evaluating biological features.
F 17. D 18. G 19. E 20. A

由上文“Because traditionally, when you have paid with a card tap or using a chip and pin machine, ultimately the shop you are buying from will be noting down all of your card details.(因为传统上,当你刷卡或使用插卡输密机付款时,你购物的商店最终会记录下你所有的银行卡信息。)”和下文“And this could be a problem — it means that if the shop is hacked or plays fast and loose with its data, you could find your card number exposed to the world.(而这可能会带来问题 —— 这意味着如果商店被黑客攻击或随意处理数据,你的银行卡号可能会泄露给所有人。)” F项“Therefore, it knows which bank account to take the money from.(因此,商店就知道从哪个银行账户扣款。)”
由上文提及的银行卡支付会泄露信息的问题,和下文“When you tap to pay with your device, it generates a unique ID number for that deal and sends that instead. So you can pay for your goods and the shop can get your money. No one needs to share any sensitive data.(当你用设备轻触付款时,设备会为该笔交易生成一个唯一的识别码并发送出去。这样你可以支付货款,商店也能收到钱,没人需要分享任何敏感数据。)”可知,空格处需形成对比,引出手机支付的优势,衔接银行卡支付的弊端与手机支付的安全机制。D项“Phone payments, by contrast, are smarter.(相比之下,手机支付要更加智能。)”
由上文“But if they get your phone, when the phone goes to pay, it will typically perform a biometric check.(但如果他们偷走了你的手机,当用手机付款时,手机通常会进行生物特征验证。)”和下文“It will ask for a finger-print or use the camera to look at your face to check that you are who you say you are.(它会要求输入指纹或使用摄像头识别人脸,以验证你的身份。)” G项“It is a process of identifying a person by evaluating biological features.(这是一种通过评估生物特征来识别个人身份的过程。)”
由下文“Because of this added security, the limit (限额) is typically higher than for contactless cards. In the UK, it’s around £100 for most retailers — though some shops including most supermarkets let you spend much more with just a tap of the phone.(由于这种额外的安全性,手机支付的限额通常比非接触式银行卡支付更高。在英国,大多数零售商的手机支付限额约为 100 英镑,不过包括大多数超市在内的一些商店,只需轻触手机就能支付更多金额。)”可知,空格处需作为主题句,概括本段手机支付在使用上更便捷的特点,核心体现支付限额高的优势。E项“And phone payments are increasingly convenient too.(而且手机支付也越来越便捷。)”
由上文“To actually set things up, go to your Wallet app and follow the instructions. Typically this starts by scanning your card with your phone. Then it will automatically recognise the numbers and connect with your bank. Usually you receive a text message with a special code on it. When you pay, hold your phone over the payment machine, and pay for your goods!(实际设置时,打开钱包应用并按照提示操作。通常首先用手机扫描银行卡,然后手机会自动识别卡号并与银行建立连接,你通常会收到一条带有验证码的短信。付款时,将手机放在支付机上,即可完成购物付款!)”可知,空格处需总结前文的手机支付操作流程,说明操作的最终结果。A项“And then, well, you’re done.(然后,就搞定了。)” 故选A项。

In a small, friendly town where neighbors knew each other well, lived Emily and her best friend, Grace. They had been inseparable since childhood, sharing everything from secrets to dreams. Emily and Grace were both members of the school’s drama club. They were excited about the upcoming school play, where Emily was chosen for the lead role, something she had dreamt of for years. Grace was happy for her, helping her rehearse and offering support.
As the day of the play approached, tension and excitement were high. During a dress rehearsal, Emily accidentally overheard Grace expressing doubt about Emily’s ability to handle the lead role to another friend. Emily felt betrayed and hurt. She confronted Grace, who was tolerant and tried to explain, but Emily was too upset to listen. Their friendship was in danger, casting a shadow over the upcoming performance.
Emily’s hurt feelings affected her performance. She found it hard to concentrate, her lines slipping away as she dwelt on Grace’s words. She avoided Grace, and their friendship grew cold.
Grace tried to apologize, explaining that her words were taken out of context and that she had always believed in Emily. But Emily was too hurt to accept her explanations. The misunderstanding between them grew, affecting not just their performance but their mutual friends as well.
On the night of the performance, Emily’s nerves were on edge. As she stepped onto the stage, her heart was heavy with the loss of her friendship. The play started, but midway, Emily forgot her lines. The audience fell silent, and a wave of panic swept over her.
Just then, Grace, from behind the curtains, whispered the forgotten lines to Emily. Hearing her friend’s voice, something shifted in Emily. She realized that despite everything, Grace was still there for her. Emily regained her calmness, delivered her lines correctly, and the play was a success.

Their reconciliation (和解) brought back the joy in their lives.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
After the curtains fell, Emily found Grace. She saw the genuine concern and regret in Grace’s eyes. In that moment, Emily understood the power of forgiveness. Holding onto her hurt feelings wasn’t only harming their friendship but was also hurting herself. Emily forgave Grace, not just in words, but with a heartfelt hug. They talked it out, understanding that miscommunication happened and that their friendship was strong enough to withstand misunderstandings.
Their reconciliation (和解) brought back the joy in their lives. They learned that forgiveness is not just about the other person but also about freeing oneself from negative emotions. Their friendship grew stronger, built on a deeper understanding and respect. The experience taught Emily and Grace, and those around them, an important lesson about the power of forgiveness. It showed them that everyone makes mistakes, but the willingness to forgive and move forward is what truly strengthens friendship.

“One hundred thousand is the approximate number of speakers needed to consider the language safe,” says Solomon, professor of Hawaiian language at University of Hawai’i at Mānoa.

8 Which of the following makes at-home cupping an alternative therapy?
