As December arrives, town squares in many countries, especially in Europe, begin to change. Wooden stalls (摊位) appear, lights are hung, and the air fills with music and warm smells. These are Christmas markets, and they have become one of the most recognizable winter traditions in many countries.
Christmas markets began to appear in parts of central Europe during the Middle Ages. People gathered in winter to buy food, candles, and handmade goods during the cold months. Over time, these practical markets became more festive.
Walking through a Christmas market feels like stepping into a story. Stalls are often decorated with lights, pine branches, and ribbons. Visitors might hear carols or see performers playing instruments. Food is an important part of the experience. Different countries offer different treats. Some markets sell sausages and warm bread, while others offer pastries, sweets, or hot chocolate. Many markets also have rides, small games, or activities designed especially for children.
Christmas markets are not just about shopping. They are places where people meet friends, spend time together, and enjoy being outdoors during winter. Families often visit in the evening, when the lights make the market feel especially magical. For children, Christmas markets can be exciting places to explore. They offer a chance to see traditions from other countries and learn how people celebrate winter in different ways.
Although Christmas markets began in Europe, they are now enjoyed around the world. Cities often add their own traditions, foods, and music. This makes each market different, even though they all share a festive feeling.
32.What was the main purpose of early Christmas markets for people in Europe?
A.To buy food and winter goods. B.To sell Christmas decorations and gifts.
C.To host musical performances. D.To provide a place for children to play.

Toad visited Heron several times. He liked talking with Heron because Heron always listened carefully. This made him feel safe. One afternoon, Toad came in looking angry. He sat down heavily in his usual chair.
“What happened, Toad?” Heron asked.
“I had a fight with my friend Mouse,” Toad said sadly. “He said I was selfish (自私的) and only thought about myself. I got angry and shouted at him. Now he doesn’t talk to me.”
Heron nodded. “Would you like to understand why you felt so angry?”
“Yes, please,” said Toad.
“Remember the Child Ego State (儿童自我状态) we talked about last time?” asked Heron.
Toad nodded.
“Children have basic feelings: happiness, anger, sadness, fear and surprise. When your friend hurt you, your ‘Natural Child’ felt pain and quickly showed anger. It’s natural that people feel this way even when they grow up. But sometimes how we act causes more trouble than the problem itself.”
Toad looked worried. “So I was acting like a child?”
“In a way, yes,” said Heron kindly. “But that doesn’t mean you are bad. Those kids’ basic feelings are natural and can help us grow. However, if children don’t get enough love and care, some bad feelings like anger and sadness can grow stronger and harder to control when they grow up.”
Toad thought for a moment. “When I was little, I often felt nobody listened to me. So now, when Mouse says I only think about myself, it feels like people still don’t care about my feelings. Maybe that’s why his words hurt so much.”
Heron smiled, “That’s why understanding your feelings matters. Next time, instead of shouting, you could tell Mouse how you feel.”
Toad felt calmer, “I will try.”
“Good,” said Heron. “Disagreements are part of life. If you learn from them, friendships can become stronger.”
Toad left Heron’s place feeling hopeful. Maybe he could fix things with Mouse after all.

60.so 61.from 62.the highest 63.to show 64.their 65.activities 66.What 67.named 68.the 69.will feel
根据“On this day, both the month and the day are the ninth, …people also call it the Double Ninth Festival.” 故填so。
根据“zero to nine”可知,表示从0到9,from…to…“从……到……”,是固定搭配。故填from。
根据“Among all the numbers…zero to nine, nine is…odd number (奇数).” 故填the highest。
根据“So it is a special holiday for Chinese people…love and respect for…elders.” 故填to show。
根据“…love and respect for…elders.” 故填their。
根据“They hold many kinds of…in honor of old people”可知,many kinds of后接名词复数,activity的复数形式是activities,表示“活动”。故填activities。
根据“…a meaningful and timeless tradition it is!” 故填What。
根据“They also carry a kind of plant…dogwood (茱萸).”
根据“People in ancient times believed that…plant could drive away evil (邪恶的) spirits”可知,此处是特指前面提到的茱萸这种植物,所以应用定冠词the修饰。故填the。
根据“If you follow these customs in the festival, you…its warm and auspicious (吉祥的) atmosphere!” 故填will feel。
Sally woke with a sudden movement. She heard strange sounds; she could smell smoke. The room was full of smoke. She coughed. What was happening? Her bedroom door opened with a bang and her mother ran in, her face white.
“Get up Sally, we have to go! Get dressed now!” Her mother disappeared back into the house.
Sally jumped from her bed and opened the window. Screams and cries came from the streets below. Sally watched people throw their things into carts, horses threading the ground, keen to leave.
“Hey, what’s happening?” Sally yelled.
“Fire!” her neighbour shouted back.
“Coming from Pudding Lane! Get out now Sally! No one is safe!”
Sally pulled her window shut and got changed as quickly as she could. Downstairs, she found her father, mother and sister jamming their things into a handcart. They watched people trying to put out the big fire with leather buckets full of water. It didn’t seem to make any difference, as the fire jumped from one building to the next.
“The houses are so close tighter and made of wood!” Sally noticed, as she tripped over candlesticks, burnt pans and odd bits of furniture that people had dropped in the streets.
The grocer’s boy, Tom Winter, saw Sally and said, “Some people are going to St. Paul’s Cathedral to stay safe. Made of stone. Won’t burn like wood.” Sally nodded, but followed her parents down the dark street.
They walked and walked. Finally, they arrived at Moorfields. It was a wide-open space with no buildings to burn. They were safe.
70.Sally’s house was on fire, wasn’t it?
71.Where did the fire start?
72.How were people trying to put out the fire?
73.Why did Sally’s family go to Moorfields?
74.What change do you think were made to the buildings after the fire?
70.No, it wasn’t. 71.It started in Pudding Lane. 72.They were trying to put out the fire with leather buckets full of water. 73.Because it was a wide-open space with no buildings to burn, so they could be safe there. 74.People probably built buildings with stone instead of wood, and made houses less closely packed.
70.根据“‘Coming from Pudding Lane! Get out now Sally! No one is safe!’” No, it wasn’t.
It started in Pudding Lane.
72.文中提到“They watched people trying to put out the big fire with leather buckets full of water.”,说明人们用装满水的皮桶灭火。故填They were trying to put out the fire with leather buckets full of water.
73.根据“Finally, they arrived at Moorfields. It was a wide-open space with no buildings to burn. They were safe.” Because it was a wide-open space with no buildings to burn, so they could be safe there.
74.从文中“The houses are so close tighter and made of wood!” People probably built buildings with stone instead of wood, and made houses less closely packed.

—Adapted from Counselling For Toad

A.They go away completely as people grow older.
B.They are always harmful to kids and their friends.

39.What will Toad do next according to the passage?

Do you want to be a doctor or an engineer? It’s easy to get information about how to become one. It’s more difficult if you want to be an actor. Nobody can say, “First you do this, then you do that, and one day you’re an actor.” 40
Learning to be an actor usually starts at school. Drama (戏剧) lessons can teach students many things like different ways of acting and how to write their own plays. 41 But even more important is learning to work in a club with other members.
However, school lessons and clubs are only one part of learning to be an actor. Find small theatre groups near where you live and don’t worry about being the star! 42 It will still help you improve. You need to be on stage (舞台) as much as possible to try different kinds of plays.
43 Of course, it’s possible to be an actor without going to university, but taking theatre courses (课程) is a good idea for some people. 44 Besides, they might also help you learn about different subjects, such as business, history, music and dance.
