Taking risks is part of life. It may bring good results, or cause you to lose. To help students understand the idea, a math teacher named Marilyn Burns designed a simple dice game called “100 or Less”. The game is not only about numbers, but also about learning how to balance risk and choice.

Write down the score after each turn. Here is an example:
Each player rolls the dice six times in total.
paper

13. What can you learn from the game?

“I think I might have bad news for you, Alice,” Willow said quietly as we stood near the welcome table. “This is Nature Camp. Tech Camp kids stay in totally different houses.”
“Nooo!” I said. “I must have clicked the wrong form on the website!”
We rushed back to ask, but were only told Tech Camp was already full.
I tried to act calm, but inside I felt down. Coding (编程) games were something I was looking forward to all summer.
“Look! Too many trees here,” I said. “I wonder if bears ever come around.”
“Oh! Wouldn’t that be the best?” Willow laughed. “You just reminded me of a joke.”
“What kind?” I asked.
“What do you call a bear with no teeth?”
“I don’t know—a very hungry bear?”
“No,” she said proudly. “A gummy bear! The candy we often eat!”
I couldn’t help laughing. “That’s really funny. I love gummy bears.”
“Me too—especially the green ones,” Willow said. Then she added, “You just gave me an idea. Maybe you can design your game characters based on gummy bears.”
I sighed (叹气). “Only if I were in Tech Camp now.”
Later that night, we sat outside. Though I still wasn’t too excited, I found myself listening closely as the teacher told stories about the moon and stars. The air was cool, and the trees were quiet.
Willow moved over and whispered another joke. I smiled—happy to find that even a mixed-up plan could still hold something unexpected.

Have you ever imagined having eyes in the back of your head? Some animals look like they do! However, these “eyes” aren’t for seeing—in fact, they can’t see at all and are called fake (假的) eyes or eyespots. It’s easy to be tricked by them—after all, they look a lot like eyes. They’re large and round, and they seem to stare (瞪眼看).
Though eyespots are similar to real eyes, they are just designs, or patterns (图案), found on different parts of an animal’s body, including feathers or fur. They can be seen on the tails of peacocks, the wings of butterflies, the skin of frogs.
You might wonder: if eyespots can’t help an animal see, why are they there at all? Scientists believe that eyespots send strong messages to other animals. For example, peacocks have long, colorful tails decorated with many eyespots. During mating (交配) season, they spread their tails to attract female peacocks. Eyespots seem to be an honest sign of quality, a way for a peacock to say, “You can be sure I’m the best choice!”
In other cases, eyespots help animals defend themselves. They can also send a totally different message, acting as a way for an animal to say, “Boo!” to its enemies and scare them away. The four-eyed frog of South America has eyespots on its bottom. When in danger, it turns around and shows large eyespots on its body. Filled with poison (毒液), these eyespots can harm anyone who tries to bite the frog and can even cause death.
Eyespots may be fake eyes but they play a very real role in helping animals survive.
18. Why are people tricked by eyespots?
A. They look like real eyes. B. They help animals see.
C. They are on animal heads. D. They are the best designs.
19. How does the writer introduce the use of eyespots?
A. By telling a story. B. By doing research.
C. By giving examples. D. By showing a survey.
20. What does the underlined word “defend” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. express B. relax C. hide D. protect
21. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Fake Eyes with Real Help B. Peacock Eyespots: A Male Feature

A great cultural event took place in Fuzhou, Jiangxi Province. The English-language The Peony Pavilion (牡丹亭) by Tang Xianzu was performed (表演) in China for the first time. At the same time, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Dream of Nanke were also performed. These plays created a dialogue across time and space and showed the shared human feelings of Tang Xianzu and William Shakespeare (莎士比亚).
Tang Xianzu from China and William Shakespeare from England were great writers during the mid-16th century. Though they never met, their works share many similarities. Their works were about themes like love, life and human spirits, and often used “dreams” in plays to express feelings that still touch people today. This idea was shown clearly at a gala held by CCTV in Fuzhou.
In the drama Tang & Shakespeare, The Peony Pavilion and Romeo and Juliet appeared on the same stage. The performance showed Eastern “pure love” and Western “devoted love”, proving that writers from different cultures can express similar feelings about love and life.
The English-language The Peony Pavilion was successful in bringing Eastern and Western cultures together. However, it also faced a challenge: how to make the special singing and music of Kunqu opera easy to understand for English people? To solve this problem, the actors used rhythms (韵律) often found in Shakespeare’s plays and mixed Western and Chinese styles in movement, dance and music. With actors from different countries, the performance became a real cultural exchange, not just a translation.
Another exciting part of the event was the “Tang-Shakespeare Legacy: Youth Dialogue”, which brought together young actors from China and the UK. These young artists not only keep traditions alive, but also bring new ideas to classic works. Their work proves that cultural differences are bridges, not barriers (障碍). As we witness the exchange, we are reminded that the influence of Tang and Shakespeare is not limited to their time but lives on in every play, every shared story, and every heart it touches.
22. What do we know about Tang and Shakespeare according to the passage?
A. They worked together to write plays. B. They were writers in different periods.
C. They wrote plays in the same country. D. They used dreams to express feelings.
23. How did the performers help English speakers enjoy The Peony Pavilion?
A. By inviting many famous international actors. B. By changing the old story into a modern one.
C. By using Western rhythms and mixing art styles. D. By explaining the play before each performance.
24. Why are young artists important in this cultural event?
A. They help make the performance shorter. B. They bring new life to traditional works.
C. They follow old traditions without change. D. They decide which plays to be performed.
25. Which idea is best supported by the passage as a whole?
A. Chinese artists play an important role in this cultural event.
B. Traditional art should be protected without making changes.
C. Cultural differences lead to misunderstandings without dialogue.
D. Cultural exchange helps classical works connect different cultures.

The Secret of Monarch Lake
While opening boxes in their new home, Kristy found an old photo. In the picture, a smiling girl stood beside a small lake.
“It says Mabel beside Monarch Lake, summer 1910,” Kristy read carefully.
Her mother explained that Mabel once lived in the house. Kristy felt curious and decided to keep the photo by herself. Later, their neighbor Mrs. Stevens told Kristy that Mabel loved Monarch Lake more than any other place, but no one knew where it was.
Kristy searched maps and the Internet, but she found nothing. She even went to the library with her mom, checked town maps, and typed “Monarch Lake” again and again. She asked the librarian for help, but no lake appeared anywhere.
One afternoon, she looked at the photo again and noticed a tower in the background. It looked exactly the same as the one behind their house.
“The photo was taken here,” Kristy realized.
That night, heavy rain fell. The next morning, Kristy looked outside and saw a pool of water in the garden, with monarch butterflies flying above it.
“Monarch Lake!” she cried.
At that moment, Kristy finally understood the secret. Monarch Lake was not a real lake. It was a small, living place, easy to miss but full of beauty.

Taking risks is part of life. It may bring good results, or cause you to lose. To help students understand the idea, a math teacher named Marilyn Burns designed a simple dice game called “100 or Less”. The game is not only about numbers, but also about learning how to balance risk and choice.
WHAT YOU NEED
a 6-sided dice
HOW YOU PLAY
Two or more players play the game.
All players roll the dice (掷骰子) once. The player with the lowest number goes first.
Players take turns to roll the dice.
After each roll, the player chooses to keep the number or multiply (乘) it by 10.
Write down the score after each turn. Here is an example:
Each player rolls the dice six times in total
paper
pencil
WHEN YOU WIN
The player wins the game when the total score is closest to, but not more than 100.
11. Who goes first in the game?
A. The player with the highest number. B. The player with the lowest number.
C. The player who keeps the number. D. The player who writes down the score.
12. Look at the example. Which dice result for Round 6 may win the game?
A. B. C. D.
13. What can you learn from the game?
A. Winning is everything. B. Being prepared is the key to success.
C Take risks whenever possible. D. Think twice before making decisions.

“Me too—especially the green ones” Willow said.

A. express B. relax C. hide D. protect

A. Fake Eyes with Real Help B. Peacock Eyespots: A Male Feature
C. Beautiful Spots for Attraction D. Fake Eyes: Best Tools for Animal Hunting

【答案】例文
Together We Made It
The four students in the picture are making a poster titled “Protecting Our Earth”. A girl is writing while the other three classmates are drawing. Teamwork is very important for each of us. When I just entered junior high school, the school held a sports meeting. All the events our class signed up for failed, leaving only the last one, the relay race. I’m a member of the team, but I’m not good at running. My teammates comforted me, telling me to believe in the power of the team. In the end, everyone in our group did their best and won the race. From this, I understand that teamwork is the key to victory.
