Microplastics in Water-a Wake-up Call for All of Us
Today researchers announced that they have found tiny pieces of plastic-
microplastics()in water from around the world. These pieces are so small that
they are unseen to the naked eye()and are very difficult to clean from the water.
36.
Even worse, the plastic has also been found in drinking water across the world,

Almost every country across the world agrees that we can't continue using so much
plastic in our lives.39.We also need to introduce new taxes and other means to
encourage companies to choose environment-friendly things and recyclable packaging(
装)for their products.
We need to take personal responsibility, too. We all may have the freedom to choose
how we spend our money and what kinds of business and products we support.Let's work
together to protect our environment, both now and for the future.40.

There are different kinds of plants and animals on the earth and they get their food
in different ways.Food chains are just used to show who eats what in a very simple way.
Food Chains
Here are some examples of food chains.
.A garden food chain might look like this:
Md
Humans can also be part of a food chain.A farm food chain could look like this:
leave◆wom网→4◆human的
A food chain shows how plants and animals are connected with each other based on
the food they eat.Food chains are different depending on the habitat ()A habitat
is the scientific name for a place where animals and plants live.Habitats can be very
different from each other,so a garden food chain would be very different from a farm food
chain
Food chains usually start with a green plant, such as grass or a tree. This is because
plants can directly change sunlight into energy that they can use for themselves. These
plants are called "producers",and they create or produce their own food. They use this
food to grow leaves, flowers, fruit and seeds.
Food Chain Disruption(中断)
When the balance()of a food chain is broken,it may result in a bad
situation. An example is overfishing.Over the years, humans have been catching too
many fish at high speed leaving not enough to keep a healthy population.Because of
this, other animals such as the turtles are endangered. So,humans should make sure our
activities don't harm the ecosystem.
()44.How does the writer explain "food chains"?
A.By listing numbers.
B.By telling stories.
C.By asking questions.
D.By giving examples.

()45.What can be best put in the“▲”in the second food chain?

B.chickens
C.trees
D.flowers
()46.What can we know from the passage?
A.Food chains usually start with human beings.
B.Different habitats lead to different food chains.
C.A garden food chain may be the same as a forest food chain.
D.Plants are called "producers"because they produce food for others.
C
Unlike what you may imagine, taking good care of a plant can be difficult, especially
when it comes to how to water a plant. Many people are not sure how often or how much
they need to water their plants.Even some farmers may have the same problem.Luckily,
a new technology called GrowStream can help them "talk"to their plants.
GrowStream is a watering system. Its tubes()have special tiny holes in them.
When plants need water, they will release(释放)chemicals(化学物质)through their
roots. When the holes detect()these chemicals, they will open. The plants then get
water from these holes. As the plants "drink"enough water, they stop releasing these
chemicals. And that "tells"the holes to close back up and stop watering.
This system can help save 45 to 50 percent more water than common watering
systems. It was created by a company called RDI.The company has brought the
GrowStream system to many farms in South Africa. It is also testing the system in the
US.It will be used to make the city greener while saving more water.
"GrowStream is more than just a technology, said Jan Gould,CEO of RDI."We
want it to 'talk'to people,too.It says'two things:The earth's natural resources(
)are not so much, and we should take better care of the planet through new technology."
()47.Why is it difficult to water a plant?
A.Plants need too much water.
B.Watering a plant takes too much time.
C.Some farmers don't teach you how to water a plant.
D.It is hard to discover whether the plant needs water.
)48.What does the underlined word "they"in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Plants.
B.Holes.
C.Chemicals.
D.Tubes.
()49.What is the main advantage of this new system?
A.Saving time.B.Easy to use.C.Saving water.
D.Cheap to buy.
()50.What does Jan Gould mean by saying the words in the last paragraph?
A.The earth is heavily polluted.
B.People can talk with GrowStream.
C.We have to find more natural resources.
D.New technology can help save natural resources.

Humpback whales(座头鲸)live in every sea. They can weigh as

whales can live to be fifty years.Scientists can look in its ears to tell a
whale's age.
Male humpback whales sing songs!Their songs start with a faint hum(嗡嗡声).
The sounds become louder and might last up to 20 minutes. You can hear whale songs 20
miles away.
Being huge does not keep these whales safe. They still face many dangers. This is
closely related to human beings. Now there is a similar challenge:global warming. It's
believed that greenhouse gases are the main cause of global warming. It also influences
the whales'living environment.
What's more, people kill these whales in large numbers for their meat.Boats give
out oil in the sea, which can make these animals sick.People throw rubbish in the sea.It
is hard for these whales to avoid oil and rubbish. All of these human activities have
decreased the number of humpback whales.
