I didn't expect that learning to ride a bike again would feel so much like learning to live. When I first
arrived at Stanford, the bikes on the road moved at their own pace-riding was part of campus rhythm,a
symbol of balance, speed and self-direction.Back home in Guyana, though, bikes were different:their
baskets filled with fruits, bags and books, carrying the weight of daily life.
I'd rarely ridden my bike in Guyana, but at Stanford, grasping my new bike's handles and practicing
circles in the sloping parking lot felt like learning to walk again-this time,in a crowd, where one mistake
could knock over others. As an international student,I had "invisible training wheels":student assistants
stayed nearby, steadying me before I lost my balance.Yet beneath the comfort,my unease continued-I
longed for the thrill of moving on my own.
At first,I hung on to every helping hand, memorizing maps and double-checking assignments. But a
mistake taught me a hard lesson:riding back from class,I almost turned left, only to catch strangers'
confused stares and spot the lane arrow pointing right.I wasn't home anymore and I needed to adapt.
I realized then that maybe the training wheels aren't the problem.Maybe they're part of the process,
the stage between being guided and being free.Every fall teaches me to shift weight, stay in lane, and
watch for others-lessons I applied to academics too.In Guyana,education was structured;at Stanford,
knowledge was an open road.Liberal education felt like too much to handle, like pedaling uphill to West
Campus,but I learned to treat each class like a ride:adjust pace,pedal hard when needed,coast()
when possible.
Now,each ride gets easier, each day steadier. And as I pedal between these two worlds-one foot in
memory, the other in motion-I appreciate the value of my training wheels.Riding a bicycle along the
road of life is the act of moving, falling and rising again-always forward, always learning to ride.
24.What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A.He had great interest in riding bikes.
B.He always lost balance and knocked others.
C.He enjoyed filling his bike with daily items.
D.He got comfort from student assistants'help
25.Why did the author almost turn left when riding back from class at Stanford?
A.He was used to the traffic in Guyana
B.He intended to confuse the strangers.
C.He followed the lane arrows mistakenly.
D.He wanted to take a shortcut to the dorm.

26.What does the author think of"training wheels"?
A.They are a sign of weakness.
B.They are necessary for growth.
C.They limit his wish for freedom.
D.They make riding faster and safer.
27.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.My New Campus Life at Stanford University
B.The Challenges of Being an International Student
C.Riding Differences:Between Guyana and Stanford
D.Riding Through Transition:From Guyana to Stanford
As wildfires spread across forests and grasslands, they give off large amounts of gases and tiny
particles()into the air.Scientists now believe we may not have fully understood how much pollution
these fires cause.A study reported in Environmental Science Technology shows that wildfires around
the world likely produce far more gases that harm air quality than earlier studies had suggested. The
research also points out that in several areas, pollution from fires joins together with pollution from human
activities,making air quality worse.
Every year, wildfires burn through huge areas of plants, sending a complex mix of chemicals into the
atmosphere. These include VOCs that easily form in the air, plus IVOCs and SVOCs,which need higher
heat to turn into gas and more readily become tiny particles. When people breathe in these particles, they
can be harmful to health. However, they are often not studied when scientists look at what wildfires
release().Their large quantity and chemical complexity make measurement difficult, leading past
assessments to focus primarily on VOCs.
To solve this problem,Shuxiao Wang's team tried to include IVOCs and SVOCs along with VOCs in
their study to better understand how wildfires affect air quality, human health, and the climate. The team
first analyzed a global database of burnt land from 1997 to 2023.Then they collected information about
the chemicals released when different plants burn. When they could not get direct measurements from real
fires, they used lab experiments to estimate the chemicals produced.By putting all this information
together, they worked out yearly worldwide wildfire emissions().
The results showed that wildland fires released an average of 143 million tons of chemicals yearly-
about 21%higher than previous estimates. The team also found that although human activities produce
more pollution overall, both wildfires and human activities release similar amounts of IVOCs and SVOCs.
This finding highlights the greater-than-expected role of wildfires, particularly through IVOC and SVOC
emissions,in reducing air quality.Different plans are needed to reduce pollution from both wildfires and
human activities.
28.What does the author want to point out in paragraph 1?
A.Wildfires are spreading faster than before.
B.Wildfires are the main cause of air pollution.
C.Human activities pollute the air more than wildfires.
D.Fire-related air pollution is more serious than known.
29.Why were IVOCs and SVOCs often left out in earlier studies?
A.They are hard to measure accurately.B.They disappear quickly in the air.
C.Their effect on climate is insignificant.D.Their existence remained unknown.
30.Which best describes the study led by Shuxiao Wang's team?
A.Thorough and data-driven.
B.Regional but well-recorded.
C.Theoretical and model-based.
D.Limited but system-building.
31.What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A.Current policies fully control wildfire pollution.
B.Wildfires and human activities require emission cuts.
C.More research is needed on chemicals emissions.
D.Reducing human-caused pollution is less essential.

We've all heard of procrastination ()-putting off tasks until the last minute. But have you
met its over-enthusiastic cousin,pre-crastination ()While procrastinators delay,pre-crastinators
rush to finish tasks immediately, even if it means extra effort, like carrying all groceries in one trip to
avoid a second walk.Invented in 2014 by psychologist David Rosenbaum,pre-crastination describes this
desire to deal with things as soon as possible. Why do people do it?And is it really the productive habit it
seems to be?
Research began with a simple experiment.Participants chose between carrying a nearby box a long
distance or a farther box a shorter way.Logically, the farther box required less effort.Yet most chose the
closer one, preferring a longer physical carry to quickly "clear the task"from their mind.Later studies
using"double-response"tasks further showed that people spend more time on their first decision and
rarely change it,showing a careful "think first, act once"pattern-a way to solve mental tasks early.
This behavior is driven by a desire to reduce cognitive load-the mental effort of holding onto
unfinished tasks. The "cognitive load-reduction idea"suggests our brains want order.By deciding or
acting early,we free up mental space.Interestingly,higher self-control often leads to more pre-crastination;
it's a way to manage mental mess(),not lose control.For example,booking a vacation months in
advance can bring calmness, even if it means less flexibility.
However,pre-crastination is not always efficient.Like procrastination,it can have the opposite effect.
Handing in a draft too soon may mean missing needed revisions, just as carrying the closer box leads to
unnecessary tiredness. It can be a "misguided superhero-feeling productive while actually causing
inefficiency.
Whether you tend to pre-crastinate or procrastinate, the key is balance.Reflect on your habits, but
don't overthink.The healthiest approach lies in the middle:act when it's timely,stop when it's wise,and
remember that clearing mental mess shouldn't come at the cost of physical or emotional well-being.
32.Why procrastination is mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.To stress why people often put off tasks.
B.To explain the reason for pre-crastination.
C.To introduce the topic of pre-crastination.
D.To criticize its negative effects on productivity
33.What do we know about pre-crastinators in Rosenbaum's experiment?
A.They preferred the easier way.
B.They hesitated for their actions.
C.They regretted their first choice.
D.They chose harder tasks to start sooner.
34.What does the underlined phrase"misguided superhero"in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.A hero who is highly appreciated.
B.A helpful but ineffective behavior.
C.A helpful person with good judgment.
D.A productive habit that causes tiredness.
35.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Procrastination improves work efficiency.
B.Pre-crastination comes from mental mess.
C.It's wise to adapt your approach based on the situation.
D.It's wise to focus on finishing tasks to clear your mind.

How to Stay Mentally Healthy in the Age of Social Media
Social media has become a big part of our lives. It helps us connect with friends, learn new things,
and find entertainment.36 The good news is that you can take control. Here are four practical ways to
protect your mental health while using social media
Set time limits
It's easy to lose track of time while scrolling().To avoid this, use your phone's built-in feature
to set daily time limits for social media apps.37 This helps you become more aware of your habits and
encourages you to use your time more wisely.
38
Your social media feed should be a positive space. If certain accounts make you feel bad about
yourself, don't hesitate to unfollow them.Fill your feed with content that inspires you, educates you,or
simply makes you happy. You have the power to shape your own online world.
Find other enjoyable activities
Instead of automatically opening a social app in your free time, try to build other healthy habits.
39 These activities can enrich your daily experience and help you take more active control of your
leisure time, rather than being passively drawn into endless scrolling.
Seek help when needed
If you find that social media is making you feel consistently sad, anxious,or is affecting your sleep
and schoolwork,it is important to talk to someone you trust, like a parent, teacher,or a mental health
professional.40
Keep in mind that social media is a tool.By using it mindfully and taking these simple steps, you can
enjoy its benefits while keeping your mental well-being safe.
A.Share more positive content.
B.Choose who you follow carefully.
C.Asking for support is a sign of strength
D.When your time is up,you will get a reminder.
E.Positive habits greatly benefit your mental health.
F.You could read, listen to music or walk with friends.
G.However, the overuse of it may cause stress or anxiety.

Mom and I stood in the hallway, nose to nose. Her hands were on her sides."I think you'd better go
to bed now,"She said.I'll be talking with your dad when he gets home. He'll be in to give you your
consequence.”
I tumed around immediately and walked angrily to my bedroom. Then I pulled the curtains shut and
threw myself down on the bed.10:15.The green digital numbers reported that my dad would be home
from night shift soon.I knew I'd be in trouble.Worst of all,I deserved it.
Lying there in the dark,I kept thinking about my failed math test-the angry red marks and the
mocking laughter of my classmates.Of course, all of that had nothing to do with my mom, except that I'd
been terrible to her this afternoon.I'd come home to fresh peanut butter cookies."Couldn't you have made
chocolate chip?'I said.Later,when she pulled chicken from the oven,I complained,"Why didn't you
make hamburgers?"I shouted until Mom hit her limit, lost her cool, and we had a shouting match in the
hall.
By the time I heard the garage door open,I felt pretty bad about the whole thing. Why had I taken my
troubles out on Mom?I knew that if I'd come home and shared what had happened,Mom would have
listened.But I hadn't.
Soon,I heard voices from the kitchen-Mom and Dad were talking. After what felt like a long time,
Dad's quiet footsteps stopped at the dining table. Then, from the kitchen, the strange sounds began.First a
machine was turned on,and then dishes were being moved.
Finally,my bedroom door opened slowly, letting the light from the hallway flood into my dark room.
Mom's hair slid past my cheek as she leaned in to whisper,"Why don't you come down to the kitchen?'
There,Dad waited with the hamburgers, calm and concerned.

Hello, everyone.I'm glad to share my study tour plan designed with AI.My topic is Huizhou's natural beauty,
like West Lake and Luofang Mountain. The AI tool helped me find beautiful spots and design outdoor activities,
such as bird-watching and plant studies. It also made a clear timetable and a packing list.
Through this task,I realized AI is a powerful assistant. It can quickly provide information and suggestions.
However, the final ideas and decisions still depend on us.I learned to use technology wisely to support, not replace,
our own thinking.
Let's unlock further potential in learning with Al

Version 2
Hello, everyone.I'm pleased to present my AI-assisted study tour plan, which centers on Huizhou's historical
culture.By instructing the aI to analyze local heritage,I developed a program that includes visiting ancient sites
and experiencing traditional crafts. The tool also assisted in arranging the trip schedule clearly and preparing useful
background notes, ensuring both depth and efficiency.
This process highlighted that while AI efficiently processes data and provides suggestions, human insight is
essential for understanding our history. It's wise toto use AI as a helpful tool that supports, rather than takes over,
our own learning and thinking.
I look forward to partnering with AI for more creative projects.
