Long ago, there was a little boy who became very ill. He had to spend all day in bed, unable to move. Other children couldn’t come near him, so he felt really sad and lonely (孤独的) every day.
He had nothing much to do but look out of the window. As days went by, he felt more and more hopeless. Until one day, he saw something strange outside the window. It was a penguin eating a sandwich. The penguin squeezed (挤) in through the open window, said “good afternoon” to the boy, turned around, and left again.
Of course, the boy was very surprised. He still didn’t know what had happened when he saw another sight outside—a funny monkey was busy blowing a balloon. At first the boy asked himself what that could be, but after a while, more and more funny-looking “visitors” appeared one after another. He couldn’t stop laughing when he saw a piggy playing a small drum and singing, or a doggy with glasses talking about food. The little boy didn’t tell anyone about this because no one would believe him. These strange visitors brought joy back to his heart and helped his body get better. Soon after, he was healthy enough to go back to school.
It was the little boy’s first day back to school. To his surprise, when he opened the door, he saw a group of “familiar visitors” waiting for him. “Welcome back!”, they cheered. When they took off the fancy dresses, the boy found that his good friends had dressed up as those funny characters to make him happy when he was ill!

Why do people in Northern China often eat noodles and dumplings, while in Southern China, rice is common? Why do people living near the sea eat more fish than those in the mountains? This is not by accident. In fact, what we eat is closely connected to geography and climate.
The main reason is that land and weather decide what food can grow there. For example, rice needs a lot of water and warmth, so it grows well in the hot, rainy south. That is why rice is the main food there. Wheat (小麦) grows better in cooler, drier places. That is why people in the north use wheat to make noodles and dumplings.
Where people live also affects the other foods they eat. People by the sea naturally eat more fish. In mountain areas with forests, people often find plants and mushrooms to eat, or they raise animals like cows and sheep. In the cold northwest, eating beef or mutton helps people stay warm. In short, people eat what their local land can provide (提供).
Long ago, there were no cars or planes, so people could only eat food from nearby. But people are smart and have learned to adapt. In Northeast China, people save vegetables in cool places underground or make special cabbage that lasts a long time. In dry Xinjiang, people dry fruits and meat in the sun. They eat fresh food in summer and save food in winter. Dishes like Sichuan hot pot help people keep warm in cold, wet weather. These ways of eating show how people live wisely with nature.
Today, things are different. We have greenhouses. So even in winter, people in Liaoning can grow strawberries. Planes and trains bring fresh fruit from Hainan to Beijing. We can also freeze food or put it in cans to keep it fresh. Now we can enjoy food from different places, but we still remember the value of eating what grows near us.
10. How does the text begin?
A. By telling stories. B. By giving facts.
C. By asking questions. D. By showing numbers.
11. Why do people in South China often eat rice?
A. They like the taste better.
B. They can keep it for many years.
C. It is quicker to make than wheat food.
D. The weather there is good for growing rice.
12. What does the underlined word “adapt” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Forget old habits. B. Travel to new places.
C. Cook delicious food. D. Change to fit the situation.
13. What might change about food if a person moves from the mountains to the seaside?
A. They might start eating more rice.
B. They might eat less meat and more fish.
C. They might learn to dry food in the sun.
D. They might eat more fruit from the south.
14. What does the writer mainly want to tell us?
A. Food from far away is always the best.
B. Geography and climate decide what we eat.
C. Life in the north is harder than that in the south.
D. Modern transportation makes it easier to enjoy different foods.
