【中考真题】
Joss Naylor is a sheep farmer from the Lake District. Among most people, his name means little, but in certain circles, he is known as one of the finest mountain runners to have ever lived.
Joss lives and breathes mountains. He has lived and farmed all his life in an area of the Lake District which has many mountains, including the tallest mountain in England. Joss has an almost superhuman ability to run at speed over mountains. However, he wasn’t always a mountain runner. As a young man, he was advised to give up farming because of serious back problems. But, when he was 24, he was tired of being told to take it easy.
Nothing can stop a good man from being better! He continued working and took up running. When he ran his first mountain race, he discovered that he fell in love with it. All his time spent herding (放牧) sheep on the mountains had prepared him for this.
His achievements are nothing short of famous. For example, he smashed his own record and set a new one. At the age of 49, he ran up 214 mountains. “It is a wonderful experience though the practice is very hard,” he said. Many of his runs have raised money for charity, and he is popular in the community.
He keeps writing and sharing his experiences about his climb. “I want people back home—especially family and friends who support me—to get a real feel for what it’s like,” he said.
1.Why is Joss famous in certain circles?
A.He is a well-known sheep farmer.

C.He gave up running when he was 24.
4.Which part of a magazine is the text probably taken from?

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though they worked so hard, the production of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about our difficulty, and later, a canal (灌溉渠) project began to be built in my village. “Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government,” my grandma replied.
Then, I moved to another city for my middle school. During one summer holiday, I came back to my hometown with my parents. When we arrived there, we were astonished because everything changed. We saw the canal ran through every orchard. And my grandma told us that after the canal project was completed, villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill to carry water anymore. And more and more people started planting fruit and the production increased a lot.

I like traveling alone, because it helps me relax. Attracted by the beauty of the Great Wall, I went there by myself. At the entrance (入口), I was stopped by some people who were selling postcards. One short old woman followed me wherever I went. She wanted me to buy some postcards. Finally, I became angry. “Don’t you understand the meaning of ‘No!’?” I shouted at her and left.
On the Great Wall, I felt very excited. Then, half-way up, I suddenly realized I was on a very dangerous road. It was no wider than a meter. And there were no walls. When the cold wind came up, I felt terribly afraid. Suddenly, I was woken up by a soft voice behind. It seemed that someone told me not to be afraid and she would help me. As I felt a pair of hands trying to protect me from falling down, I gradually calmed down.
With her help, I reached a safer place. Feeling better, I turned around to see who had been so kind. It was the short old woman. I felt sorry for what I had done and gave her a big hug.
Through this experience, I realized that most of the time, we should try to forgive others because we never know what situation we’ll be in and when we’ll need help.

Living with a host family when studying abroad is a special experience. Being away from family can be hard, but it lets you see the world from a new perspective.
I grew up near the Pacific Ocean. My family loved going to the beach every weekend, building sandcastles and watching the waves, but I always felt bored there—nothing seemed new to me. When I moved to Germany to live with a host family, I told them about my beach stories. They were shocked and said they really looked forward to having a chance to see the ocean, which they saw as a magical place.
One Saturday morning, my host dad suggested visiting the ruins of a nearby castle (城堡). The kids complained (抱怨), “Oh no, another castle!” But I was excited because I’d never seen a real castle before. Castles are rare in my country, so the idea of visiting one was exciting to me.
We went to the castle that Saturday, and it was amazing. It had tall stone walls, old towers, and narrow stone stairs. I pictured what life was like there hundreds of years ago—knights walking on the walls, families sitting in the yards. My host brothers and sisters showed me their favorite spots, and we explored the castle together.
From this experience, I learned that both the ocean and old castles can be fun places to visit if you have a good attitude (态度). Living with my host family helped me enjoy new experiences and find beauty in old things I once missed.

C.Having a good attitude is important.
4.Where is the passage most likely from?

Since childhood, Ajar has been interested in the secret lives of little animals. The boy often spent hours watching little animals in nature. His love for wildlife encouraged him to pick up a camera years ago.
Ajar spends most of his spare time taking pictures of little animals. When it rains, he likes to watch the tree frogs hiding under the plants.
Once he was outside and noticed two frogs jumping for cover when it started to rain. While they were sitting under a flower “umbrella”, they hugged each other. To record the special moment, Ajar took a photo of them at once. This perfect photo looks just as if two good friends are looking after each other during the rain.
“I’m lucky to have such a good chance to take a picture of them. That’s an amazing moment, actually,” said the boy excitedly. It always takes Ajar several hours to wait for wonderful moments like this. For example, a frog in the rain is holding a leaf like an umbrella. Two frogs appear to be dancing together. And two birds are fighting in the air.
Catching these amazing moments needs a lot of patience, but for Ajar, it’s always worth it. “I let the animals act. I’m just waiting for the best moment,” said the boy. “I don’t mind getting wet in the rain if it means seeing nature at its best.”
Ajar says these little animals have taught him a lot about the beauty of the world. He has already filled three photo albums with these lovely photos, and he often shows them to his classmates at school. Every time he shares the stories behind the photos, his eyes are full of light.
Last month, he even brought some of his best photos to the school’s science show. Many students stopped to look, and they all said they never noticed these tiny but wonderful moments in nature before. Ajar felt really happy that he could let more people see the secret and warm world of little animals.
1.Why did Ajar take pictures of little animals?

Roy asked his mom, “Why does Allie have to come along? Troy’s sister doesn’t. Jimmy’s sister doesn’t.” His mother said, “Troy’s sister is only six months old, and Jimmy doesn’t have a sister. Guess what makes you the unlucky one.”
Roy and his friends used to play hardball, but one of them broke a window of Mr. McWhirter’s house. Mr. McWhirter wouldn’t even give them their hardball back. So Roy only played whiffle ball (空心棒球) with his friends. As usual, Allie caught up with the boys.
Quickly, the whiffle ball game started. It was Jimmy’s turn. He hit the ball hard, right into Mr. McWhirter’s yard. The boys ran over to Mr. McWhirter’s fence (栅栏) and peered through the railings (围栏). The ball lay in the grass, just out of reach. Nobody knew what to do.

He bought her a fine horse, but she didn’t like to ride. He bought her beautiful and expensive clothes, but Araminta said that they made her neck uncomfortable. “That’s easy enough,” the king replied. “But I don’t understand,” he said. “How could a fishing rod make you so happy?” Araminta simply smiled. “You don’t have to understand,” she said. “Happiness doesn’t always come from expensive things. For Emma, PE class was the most difficult part. She didn’t mind the tiredness; what bothered her were the looks her classmates gave her. Emma was bigger than others of her age. A group of students often ran behind her, laughing and talking about how Emma ran.
“Just one more year,” Emma kept telling herself, “One more year and I’ll graduate (毕业) and won’t have to take this stupid PE class anymore.”
But everything changed when a girl called Kit joined the class. She had short hair, bright eyes, and a long scar (伤疤) across the left side of her face. She introduced herself, “Hi, everyone, I’m Kit. I love sports and fashion. You might be wondering about the scar. I got it when I fell off my bike. I see it as a cool mark now.” Emma listened in surprise. How could the girl be so confident?
During lunchtime, Emma was sitting at her usual table. Kit walked over to join Emma. Emma couldn’t believe such a confident girl would like to sit with her. She worked up the courage to share what was troubling her. “Hug yourself!” said Kit. Hearing that, Emma felt a wave of warmth wash over her. And she felt the weight lift off her shoulders.
It was time for PE class again, but this time Kit was with her. Emma discovered that true confidence comes from within, not from others’ words. In the beautiful sunshine, the two girls walked together—one with a scar on her face and the other with a body that she finally felt she owned.

When we were young, we always listened to others’ decisions for different reasons. This may seem to make things easier, but it also leads to missing chances.
I still remember that when I was an 8-year-old boy, I always asked my parents, friends and teachers for help. Being afraid of doing something wrong, I seldom made decisions by myself. I asked myself many times, “What should I do? Should I always depend on others?”
However, I began to change after I became a high school student. It was when I decided to join in the School Singing Competition. Even though it was so hard to give a great performance, I took the chance and practiced hard for the competition. Then the day came soon.
My heart beat fast because it was the first time that I had sung in public. When I opened my mouth, the voice was clear and sweet. Luckily, I won first prize. I was happy with myself for the first time. I realized that if I wanted to make my life full, I had to take each chance.
From then on, I was not afraid to meet difficulties. Take the following thing as an example. When it came to the courses, I used to choose those without any challenges. But I took a difficult science course this time. I know that as long as I try hard, I can still get a good grade in the exam.
“Life is about taking up the things you are not good at,” my mother told me. Now I know that things will become easier with hard work and every chance I take.

“Fred?” Caroline cried. “Do you think I want to win like that? Do you really think that?”
“But I only wanted to help you. Look! Everyone is happy. You are, mum and dad are, your horse Apple wind is happy too, I think—and Sophie and Blossom will be okay in a few weeks.”
“Fred! Sophie was lucky that she only broke a rib (肋骨). Thank goodness she didn’t break more!!! Thank goodness she’s not dead!!!” Fred started crying. “I’m sorry. I’m really sorry. I didn’t think...” “That’s all right, Fred,” Caroline said. “I know you did it for me. But we have to tell everyone the truth. I don’t want the Cup. Not like this.”

From then on, I was not afraid to meet difficulties. Take the following thing as an example. When it came to the courses, I used to choose those without any challenges. But I took a difficult science course this time. I know that as long as I try hard, I can still get a good grade in the exam.
