We may have an interview for our volunteer work. And the following suggestions will help make the interview a success.
We should do some research on the volunteer work. We can call the organization or visit its website to find out some information about it. It’s also important for us to think about what questions the interviewers may ask. It will help us to keep the interview going smoothly.
When leaving for the interview, we must remember to take everything we need. And we’re supposed to be at the interview about 30 minutes early. It allows us to get ready for the interview.
Before we go into the interview room, we can take a deep breath to relax ourselves. When we hear someone ask us to go inside, we can enter the room. We should greet the interviewers with a smile and stand until they ask us to sit down.
In answering questions, we had better be confident to show our talent and skills. It’s important to look into the interviewers’ eyes even if we are very nervous and shy. If we can’t understand the interviewers’ questions, it’s OK to ask the interviewers to explain them further.
Before the interview is over, the interviewers usually invite us to ask some questions. We can ask a question about the work or the interview. For example, “What kind of training do you offer to volunteers?” We are supposed to thank the interviewers before we leave.

阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
As a ninth grader, learning about different cultures has opened my eyes to how different our world truly is. Every country has its own unique customs and traditions that make it special.
In India, people often greet each other by saying “Namaste” with their hands pressed together. This is very different from countries like Brazil, where friends usually hug or give cheek kisses when they meet. Even simple things like meal times can vary greatly. In Spain, it’s normal to eat dinner as late as 9 or 10 pm, while in Germany, people usually have their evening meal at 6 pm.
Food customs are particularly interesting. In China, it’s polite to leave a little food on your plate to show your host served enough, but in Canada, you’re expected to finish everything. In many Middle Eastern countries, people eat with their right hand only, as the left hand is considered unclean.
What surprised me most was learning about gestures. In Bulgaria, nodding your head means “no”, while shaking it means “yes”—the complete opposite of what I’m used to!
These cultural differences used to confuse me, but now I find them fascinating. They remind me that there’s no single “right” way to do things. Understanding these differences helps me appreciate our world and become more respectful towards people from all cultures.
1.How do people in Brazil usually greet each other?
2.When do Germans usually have their evening meal?
3.Why do people in many Middle Eastern countries eat with their right hand only?
4.What should we do if we want to show agreement in Bulgaria?
5.Give an example about a special custom in China. (答案须与文中所给例子不同)
【答案】1.They usually hug or give cheek kisses. 2.At 6 pm. 3.Because the left hand is considered unclean. 4.Shake our heads. 5.It’s impolite to stick the chopsticks into the rice.
【导语】本文通过对比不同国家的文化习俗,说明了世界文化的多样性,并强调了理解和尊重文化差异的重要性。
1.根据“This is very different from countries like Brazil, where friends usually hug or give cheek kisses when they meet.”可知,在巴西,朋友见面时通常拥抱或亲吻脸颊。故填They usually hug or give cheek kisses.
2.根据“In Spain, it’s normal to eat dinner as late as 9 or 10 pm, while in Germany, people usually have their evening meal at 6 pm.”可知,在德国,人们通常在下午6点吃晚餐。故填At 6 pm.
3.根据“In many Middle Eastern countries, people eat with their right hand only, as the left hand is considered unclean.”可知,他们只用右手吃饭,是因为左手被认为不洁。故填Because the left hand is considered unclean.
4.根据“In Bulgaria, nodding your head means ‘no’, while shaking it means ‘yes’—the complete opposite of what I’m used to!”可知,在保加利亚,点头表示“不”,摇头表示“是”。因此表示同意(agreement)应摇头。故填Shake our heads.
5.本题为开放性题目,答案不唯一,言之有理即可。参考答案为It’s impolite to stick the chopsticks into the rice.
阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
Growing up isn’t easy. Sometimes, it can be a real “pains”. We often have to do something that others want us to do. Sometimes we can’t do what we like. We might feel sad, scared, or helpless. But if we look back at these “pain” with a positive view, we’ll see that these “pains” finally turn into gains (好处).
It’s true that we’ll face many challenges and pains during our life, but we shouldn’t let them stop us from following our dreams. We need to face them bravely.
As a young boy, my parents forced me to do many things I didn’t like. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time, I hated music and I also hated them. But now, I’m so glad they encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has really made my life better in many ways. I now understand they just wanted me to have a better future.
Life needs growing pains to be interesting. They make our days meaningful. We all go through them. They are just part of life. Each pain makes us stronger and smarter. If we realize these pains are just small bumps (颠簸) on our road to success, we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!
So, the pains we face are really gains that help us get better and ready for the good things ahead.
1.What will happen if we view growing pains positively?
2.Why did the writer hate music and his parents when he was young?
3.How does the writer feel about his music learning experience now?
4.What does the writer think growing pains can do for us? (List two points)
5.Do you think growing pains are necessary in life? Why or why not?
【答案】1.We’ll see that these “pains” finally turn into gains. / “Pains” will turn into gains. 2.Because his parents forced him to learn to play the violin and then the piano that/ which he didn’t like (at that time). 3.The writer/ He feels glad/ thankful. / Glad. / Thankful. 4.They can make our days meaningful. They can make us stronger and smarter. (写出任意两点即可) 5.Yes. They’re part of life and make us stronger and smarter.
No. They bring sadness/ fear/ helplessness and may leave bad memories. (答案合理即可)
【导语】本文通过个人经历和哲理阐述,探讨了成长过程中的痛苦如何转化为收获,强调积极面对挑战的意义。
1.根据“But if we look back at these “pains” with a positive view, we’ll see that these “pains” finally turn into gains (好处).”可知,我们将看到这些“痛苦”最终转化为收益。故填We’ll see that these “pains” finally turn into gains. / “Pains” will turn into gains.
2.根据“They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time, I hated music and I also hated them.”可知,因为他的父母强迫他(当时)先学小提琴,然后学他不喜欢的钢琴。故填Because his parents forced him to learn to play the violin and then the piano that/ which he didn’t like (at that time).
3.根据“I’m so glad they encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has really made my life better in many ways.”可知,作者感到高兴。故填The writer/ He feels glad/ thankful. / Glad. / Thankful.
4.根据“They make our days meaningful.;Each pain makes us stronger and smarter.”可知,它们可以让我们的日子变得有意义。它们可以让我们变得更强壮、更聪明。故填They can make our days meaningful. They can make us stronger and smarter.
5.答案合理即可。故填Yes. They’re part of life and make us stronger and smarter.
No. They bring sadness/ fear/ helplessness and may leave bad memories.

Now, life has changed a lot. It may be difficult to predict (预测) the future, but many people believe that we will live on Mars (火星) by the year 2100. Our own planet, Earth, is becoming more and more crowded and polluted. Well, what problems will we need to solve before we prepare to go to Mars?
First of all, transport should be much better. At present, humans need to spend a few months going to Mars by spaceship. However, by 2100, spaceships can travel at half the speed of light. It might take us two or three days to get there!
Moreover, humans need food, water and air to live. Scientists should develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce the food, water and air that we need. However, there is no answer for all the problems now.
There is also a problem for us to live on Mars. Mars attracts us much less than the Earth does. This will be dangerous because we could easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space there. We will have to wear special shoes to make ourselves heavier.
In some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on the earth today. Food will not be the same—meals will probably be in the form of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will probably make many people feel very uncomfortable.
1.When will we probably live on Mars?
2.So far, how long does it take us from the earth to Mars by spaceship?
3.Why should we develop plants that can be grown on Mars?
4.What will we have to wear to keep ourselves heavier?
5.Do you think living on Mars would be better or worse than life on Earth now? Why?
【答案】1.By the year 2100. 2.A few months. 3.Because these plants will produce the food, water and air that we need. 4.Special shoes. 5.I think living on Mars would be worse than life on Earth now because food will not be the same and space travel will probably make many people feel very uncomfortable.(答案不唯一,合理即可)

3.根据文章第三段“These plants will produce the food, water and air that we need.”可知,科学家们需要开发能在火星上生长的植物,因为这些植物可以生产人类所需的食物、水和空气。故填Because these plants will produce the food, water and air that we need.
4.根据文章第四段“We will have to wear special shoes to make ourselves heavier.”可知,为了在火星上保持身体更重,人类需要穿特殊的鞋子。故填Special shoes.
5.根据文章最后一段“In some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on the earth today. Food will not be the same—meals will probably be in the form of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will probably make many people feel very uncomfortable.” I think living on Mars would be worse than life on Earth now because food will not be the same and space travel will probably make many people feel very uncomfortable.(答案不唯一,合理即可)

Have you ever seen a cat or a dog cry? Probably not a real one! That’s because animals can’t really cry. They can make tears, but only humans can cry because of emotion (情绪), reported The New York Times.
Tears come in three types, according to Discover magazine. Most of the time, our eyes make basal tears (基础性眼泪) to keep them from getting dry. When we cut onions or when something gets in our eyes, reflex tears (反射性眼泪) help wash out bad things. Then there are emotional tears. They are special because they come from strong feelings, such as sadness and happiness. Emotional tears also have more protein (蛋白质) in them than the ones that come from cutting onions, said Time magazine. Scientists think the protein makes emotional tears thicker and slower to run down the face. That way, other people can see them more easily.
Young kids cry a lot, but it’s often just because something happened to them, like falling over or dropping an ice cream. But as we grow up, we cry more because of our feelings for others. In human society, crying is a call for help. It quickly lets others see that something is not right and brings people closer. Crying also helps us calm down and think about difficult things, said Medical News Today.
1.What’s the function (功能) of basal tears?
2.What kind of tears are produced when sand gets into our eyes?
3.What makes emotional tears thicker and slower to run down the face?
4.Why do young kids cry a lot?
5.What do you think of crying? Why? (答案须与文中提到的不同)
【答案】1.To keep our eyes from getting dry. 2.Reflex tears. 3.The protein in them. 4.It’s often just because something happened to them. 5.I think crying is a sign of weakness because people should learn to solve problems rationally instead of crying.
1.根据“Most of the time, our eyes make basal tears to keep them from getting dry.”可知,眼泪是防止眼睛变干。故填To keep our eyes from getting dry.
2.根据“When we cut onions or when something gets in our eyes, reflex tears help wash out bad things.”可知,沙子进入眼睛属于有异物进入眼睛的情况。故填Reflex tears.
3.根据“Scientists think the protein makes emotional tears thicker and slower to run down the face.”可知,情绪性眼泪中的蛋白质让其更黏稠、滑落速度更慢。故填The protein in them.

Being overweight is harmful. It increases the risk of diseases such as heart problems and high blood pressure. China has made a three-year weight management plan to help people control weight. So, do you know how to manage your weight?
Both what you eat and how you eat are very important. You should eat meals regularly (规律地). Have breakfast every day and finish dinner by 7 p.m. Avoid snacks, fried (油炸的) food and drinks with lots of sugar. Begin your meal with vegetables, then meat, and finally rice or noodles. That is the right order of eating. Eat until you’re 70% full and eat slowly.
Exercise is as important as eating. Try to exercise for 150 to 300 minutes each week such as walking or swimming, along with strength training twice a week. If you sit for too long, stand up and move for 3 to 5 minutes every hour. Also, get enough sleep, about 7 hours a night.
Some cities have already set up special “weight management clinics (门诊)”. To help people lose weight safely, some experts (专家) can give advice on diet, exercise plans and Traditional Chinese Medicine methods. Schools also teach students about healthy eating. Even AI technology might be used to improve personal weight management.
Experts remind us that weight management is not a short-term goal. It’s a lifelong habit. Let’s work together for a healthier future.

The Silk Road is neither an actual road nor a single route (路线). The term instead refers to a network of routes used by traders for more than1,500 years, which went from China to Eastern Europe.
It was called the Silk Road because one of the major (主要) traded products was silk cloth from China. Besides silk, the Chinese also exported (出口) tea, salt, sugar, porcelain (瓷器), and spices (香料). Most of what was traded was expensive luxury (奢侈) goods. This was because it was a long trip and merchants didn’t have a lot of room for goods. They imported (进口), or bought, goods like cotton, ivory, wool, gold, and silver.
Merchants (商人) traveled in large caravans (商队). They would have many guards with them. Traveling in this way helped in defending from bandits (土匪). Camels were popular animals for transport because much of the route was through dry and harsh land.
Although there had been some trade between China and the rest of the world for some time, the silk trade was significantly expanded (发展) by the Han Dynasty (汉朝). Later, under the rule of the Yuan Dynasty (元朝), set up by Kublai Khan of the Mongols, trade from China along the Silk Road would reach its peak. During this time, the Mongols (蒙古) controlled a significant portion (部分) of the trade route, enabling Chinese merchants to travel safely.
The Silk Road was important because it helped to generate trade between a number of different kingdoms and empires (帝国). This helped for ideas, culture, inventions, and unique products to spread (传播) across much of the settled world.
The Silk Road was over 4,000 miles long. There wasn’t just one route, but many routes. Some were shorter, but more dangerous. Others took longer, but were safer.
1.What is the Silk Road according to the passage?
2.What was the major traded product along the Silk Road?
3.When was the silk trade significantly expanded? (扩大)
4.What advantage (优势) did traveling in caravans bring to the merchants?
5.What do you think of the Silk Road? Why?
【答案】1.It is a network of routes used by traders for more than 1,500 years, which went from China to Eastern Europe. 2.Silk cloth from China. 3.During the Han Dynasty. 4.It helped merchants to defend against bandits. 5.It was very important because it helped generate trade and spread ideas, culture, inventions, and products across the world.

I used to be the “last-minute girl”. I’d start my homework at midnight. I’d arrive at my soccer practice out of breath and late.
Then, on my 14th birthday, my aunt gave me a smart watch with a note: “Dear Emily, Time is your friend. Learn to get along with it. —Aunt Lisa” I stared at the little unbelievable gift. How could a tiny screen fix years of bad habits?
The first week, I totally forgot it. I didn’t use it until the Monday of the second week. On that day, I overslept, missed the school bus, and forgot my science project. Feeling upset, I finally decided to do something. I took out the watch and set up a new schedule (日程表) on it. To my surprise, it gave out a low sound and showed: “8:00 AM tomorrow—Science project due. Pack it tonight!” Wow! It got interesting.
Slowly, I began to trust it. The watch broke big tasks (任务) into steps: “Math homework: 3 problems now, 3 after dinner.” It celebrated small wins with a happy face. Strangest of all, it could remind me to sleep when I stayed up late.
Days passed. My classmates noticed the change. My best friend Lisa was completely shocked when I arrived early for her birthday party. Even my mom, who used to call me “an unorganized time-user” said, “Keep it up.”
But the real test was the Speech Competition. Old Emily would have written the speech the night before. New Emily let the watch plan a two-week practice schedule. On the competition day, as I stood backstage (后台), my hands shook. The watch vibrated (震动) softly and a preset message flashed: “Breathe. You’ve prepared 37 hours for this moment.” I smiled, walked onstage, and spoke about my journey with time. When the host announced my first prize, I looked at my watch and its face showed: “Proud of you!”
Some say technology makes us lazy. But for me, that little invention was a mirror showing me I could be hardworking and learn to pay attention.
1.Who gave Emily the smart watch?
2.When did Emily start to use the watch after she got it?
3.What was the strangest thing the watch could do in Emily’s eyes?
4.What did Emily let the watch do before the Speech Competition?
5.If you have the watch, what will you use it to do? (List one thing.)
【答案】1.Lisa./Aunt Lisa./Her aunt (Aunt Lisa) gave it to her. 2.On the Monday of the second week./The Monday of the second week. 3.It could remind her to sleep when she stayed up late. 4.She let it plan a two-week practice schedule. 5.I will use it to remind me to review my lessons every day so that I won’t have to cram before exams./I hope it can break down my reading goals into small daily tasks./I hope it can remind me to read for 15 minutes each day...
1.根据文章第2段“on my 14th birthday, my aunt gave me a smart watch with a note: ‘Dear Emily...—Aunt Lisa.’”可知,手表是艾米丽的姑姑丽莎送给她的。故填Lisa./Aunt Lisa./Her aunt (Aunt Lisa) gave it to her.
2.根据文章第3段“I didn’t use it until the Monday of the second week.”可知,艾米丽在收到手表后的第二周的星期一才开始使用它。故填On the Monday of the second week./The Monday of the second week.
3.根据文章第4段“Strangest of all, it could remind me to sleep when I stayed up late.”可知,在艾米丽看来,手表最奇特的功能是能在她熬夜时提醒她睡觉。故填It could remind her to sleep when she stayed up late.
4.根据文章第6段“New Emily let the watch plan a two-week practice schedule.”可知,在演讲比赛前,艾米丽让手表为她规划了一个为期两周的练习计划。故填She let it plan a two-week practice schedule.
5.此题为开放性问题。可结合文章中提到的手表功能,提出一个合理的用途。参考答案I will use it to remind me to review my lessons every day so that I won’t have to cram before exams./I hope it can break down my reading goals into small daily tasks./I hope it can remind me to read for 15 minutes each day...

We may try to join a school club. The following advice will help us do well when the club is choosing new members.
First, we should learn about the club well. We can look at the club’s notice boards, talk to the club members, or check the club’s account on the school app. It’s important to know the club’s aims, regular activities, and what kind of members they want. This helps us show that we really want to join and that we fit the club.
We need to prepare a self-introduction. It should tell about our hobbies, good points, and what we can do for the club. Practice saying it so that it’s short and interesting. Also, think about the questions the club teachers or students might ask, like “Why do you want to join our club?” and get ready to answer them. Besides this, we need to remember three key words: honest, clear and passionate when talking to the club organizers.
On the day when the club is choosing new members, we should act properly. Be on time and wear clean clothes that suit the club (for example, sports clothes for a sports club). Bring any needed things, such as a collection of your drawings for an art club.
During the talk with club organizers, listen carefully. When you answer, be honest and make your ideas clear, If you don’t understand a question, just ask them to explain it again. Keep a happy attitude and show that you love the club.
Before the club finishes choosing new members, we can ask a question about the club, such as “What fun activities will the club have soon?” Then, thank the organizers and leave a nice impression.

Have you ever felt like studying is a bit boring but watching someone else study makes you want to join in? You’re not alone. “Study with Me” is a new way you can try. The basic idea behind it is that watching someone else study motivates (激励) us to do the same.
“Study with Me” is a kind of live broadcast (直播) on the Internet. It often shows real-time scenes of someone studying, in silence or with soft music. It creates a sense of companionship (陪伴) and provides shared focus, making learning more enjoyable and effective. That’s why more and more students around the world are attracted (被吸引的) to it.
Why does watching someone else study make us want to study too? Scientists say it’s a human’s natural habit—we tend to copy the behaviors of those around us, called mimicry. We may follow their note-taking ways or use the same study tools. Also, we need social support: the people on screen are like secret study partners, and when we see them working hard on the screen, we might feel that we are part of them. It can inspire us through difficulties.
“Study with Me” can be helpful, but keep these in mind: First, we should set clear study goals because it can help us stay focused on our own work. It is important not to depend on it too much because true motivation should come from within. Lastly, we’d better stick to (坚持) learning with some trustworthy people who have well-organized study plans.
In the digital age, learning ways are changing. “Study with Me” creates global connections and encourages students to enjoy learning through focus, fun and friendship.
1.What is the basic idea behind “Study with Me”?
2.What does “Study with Me” often show?
3.When do we feel that we are part of a team according to the passage?
4.Why should we set clear study goals first before joining online study partners?
5.In the coming winter holiday, which do you prefer, studying with “Study with Me” or studying alone? Why?
【答案】1.Watching someone else study motivates us to do the same. 2.It often shows real-time scenes of someone studying, in silence or with soft music. 3.When we see the people on screen working hard. 4.Because it can help us stay focused on our own work. 5.I prefer studying with “Study with Me” during the coming winter holiday because it creates a sense of companionship and provides shared focus, making learning more enjoyable and effective.

With these suggestions, we will have a good chance of getting volunteer work.
1.How can we do research on the volunteer work?
2.Why are we supposed to be at the interview early?
3.What can we do to relax ourselves before we go into the interview room?
4.What should we do if we can’t understand the interviewers’ questions?
5.What question do you want to ask the interviewers before the interview is over? (Your question should be different from the underlined one in the text.)

Why?

Dear Mary from 2025,
I’m in 2035 now. Great changes have taken place in China. When I was 7 years old, I got a serious illness. Since then, I have dreamed of becoming a doctor when I grow up. Now my dream has come true. I work in a hospital every day to save people’s lives. Doctors can do operations (手术) even when they’re far away from patients. This is because the Internet is faster now. We have 8G and robots that are smart enough.
China now is one of the most developed countries in the world. Every car on the streets is a self-driving car. The self-driving cars use electricity from the sun, the wind and CO2 and don’t pollute the air. Robots are also widely used in every home. They can do all of the housework. Recently, a new type of AI robot has come into people’s homes. It is called “HomePal” and it can help with a lot of housework.
HomePal is about 1.2 meters tall and has a round body. Every morning, it can wake you up by playing your favorite music. Then, it can cook breakfast for you. It knows how to make different kinds of food.
After you go to school, HomePal starts to do the housework. It can sweep the floor, clean the windows and even wash the dishes. It moves carefully so that it won’t knock over any furniture (家具). When your parents come back from work, the house is always tidy and clean.
HomePal is also a good helper for students. It can help with homework and it can also tell interesting stories to help you relax. When it explains math problems to you, it won’t give you the answers directly. Instead, it guides you to think on your own.
On weekends, HomePal can play games with your family. It can play chess with your dad or dance with your mom. It even knows how to take photos. Last week, my family had a birthday party for my grandma. HomePal took many beautiful photos for us to record the happy moment.
However, HomePal is not perfect. Sometimes it can’t understand your words if you speak too fast. And it needs to be charged (充电) for four hours every day. But it brings a lot of convenience (便利) and joy to our lives.

My mother worked as a cleaner in our school when I was in the middle school. At that time she was such an embarrassment (难堪) to me not only because of her job but also her look. She had only one eye. Every time I saw her in my school, I pretended not to see her and ran away.
After graduating, I got a good job in another city. Then I got married and had two kids. I told my family that my parents had been dead, so they never saw my mother, even her photo. But one year later, I got a letter. It read:My dear son Bill,
I’m sorry to trouble you, but I really miss you all the time. I’m afraid that I will have no chance to see you again. I’m sorry that I was always an embarrassment to you when you were growing up. However, I had no choice. When you were very young, you got into an accident and lost your eye. As a mother, I couldn’t stand that you would have to grow up with one eye. So I…
I was proud of my son who was enjoying his beautiful world for me with that eye.
With all my love to you!

1.What has China made to help people control weight?
2.What is the right order of eating a meal?
3.How often should we take strength training?
4.What do experts in “weight management clinics” do to help people lose weight safely?
5.What can you do to manage the weight?

Why?

With these tips, we can have a better chance to join the club we like.
1.What three things is it important to know about the club?
2.What should a self-introduction tell about?
3.What example of clothes is given for a sports club?
4.What should we do if we don’t understand a question during the talk?
5.What question do you want to ask the club organizers before they finish choosing new members?
(Your question should be different from the example in the text.)

Why?
