As part of my history project on transport,I did some short interviews with people in my neighborhood. My first interview was with my friend Susan's grandmother, Mrs. Sanderson.
Question 1
How did you get to school when you were young?
I walked to school with my friends, except for Fridays when we had to carry all of our things for school sports. Then we caught the bus. I enjoyed walking because we could chat on the way. I didn't like it when it was raining though, but Mum always made sure I wore my raincoat and gumboots. On the other hand, I became a strong walker, and I believe that's why I've been healthy all my life.
Question 2
My parents drive me to school. Why didn't you go to school by car?
You know, we were not rich enough at that time. We could not afford a car until after I had finished school.
Question 3
How did you get around when you weren't going to school?
We often went for a family trip by train. Most weekends we went on picnics and I loved playing with my cousins in the park. The trip took much longer than it would take by car today of course.
Question 4
How do you get around now?
I still love walking, but I need to drive my grandchildren around, so I mainly use my car.

On that Saturday afternoon, the Harpers and Aunt Polly’s family went into mourning (哀悼). The village was unusually quiet. The villagers talked little but sighed (叹息) often. Children had no heart in sports and gave them up. People were sad to know that Tom, Joe and Huck were drowned (淹死).
In the afternoon, Becky found herself walking around the yard and feeling very sad. She said to herself, “I haven’t got anything to remember Tom by. He’s gone now. I’ll never, never see him any more.”
Then there was a debate about who saw the dead boys last in life. Many said they did and offered evidence. When it was finally decided who saw the dead boys last, the lucky ones took upon themselves some self-importance.
The next morning, when the bell began to toll (鸣钟), the villagers got together in the church. No one could remember when the little church had been so full before. Aunt Polly entered. She was followed by Sid and Mary and by the Harper family. They were all in deep black. As the funeral continued, people felt sorry that they did not treat the boys well before.
They only saw faults (缺点) in them. People gave way to their feelings and cried. A moment later, the church door opened slowly. People raised their eyes above handkerchiefs and they were surprised. They saw Tom, Joe and Huck—the three dead boys walk into the church! They had been hiding and listening to their own funeral!
Aunt Polly, Mary and the Harpers threw themselves upon their children and kissed them again and again. Tom got hundreds of kisses that day. Before this, he didn’t know he was loved by so many people.
13. Why was the village unusually quiet?

After a game like football, the players might get an X-ray in the hospital if they hurt their legs or arms. A dentist can use X-rays to look at teeth. And airport workers use an X-ray machine to check objects before a plane leaves. Nowadays, X-ray technology is widely used in medicine and other fields.
X-rays were first discovered by a German scientist, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845 –1923). He found them quite by accident in 1895. One day, he discovered that an unknown kind of radiation (放射线) could hardly pass through hard objects like bones (骨头). Later, Röntgen took a photo of his wife’s hand. It clearly showed her ring and her bones. That was the first X-ray photo in the world.
Why is there an “X” in the word X-ray? It’s because Röntgen couldn’t explain exactly how it worked. He just knew that X-rays were new and useful for science. In fact, X-rays soon became an important tool in medicine. With the help of X-rays, doctors could see inside the human body for the first time without surgery (外科手术).
Röntgen was awarded the first Nobel Prize (诺贝尔奖) in physics in 1901 for his discovery. When he was asked what he was thinking at the moment of discovery, he replied, “I didn’t think, I investigated (研究).” Röntgen gave away his Nobel Prize money to his university. And he never took out any patents (专利权) on X-rays, to make sure that the world could freely make use of his discovery.
41. Where is X-ray technology used?
42. When were X-rays discovered?
43. Why did Röntgen name the ray “X-ray”?
44. What do you think of Röntgen? Why? Write 30 words or more.
