New winter coat rule
The coldest months of winter have arrived. But Woodchurch High School in the UK has banned (禁止) students from wearing expensive down coats (羽绒服) after Christmas.
This is to stop ‘poverty-shaming (贫困羞辱)’ among its students, the Independent noted. Coat brands like Canada Goose and Moncler sell for£1,000 (8,674 yuan), a cost that only the richest families are able to cover. Poor students feel left out when they see others wear these coats.
“These coats cause a lot of inequality (不平等),” head teacher Rebekah Phillips told CNN. “They stigmatize (使……感到羞耻) students and parents who are less well off.”
Most parents are happy with the ban, saying that school shouldn’t be a place where students’ economic background distracts them from learning. Small changes like this have led low-income students to become more engaged in school, BBC noted.
But some people don’t agree with it. They question why children shouldn’t be allowed to wear clothes that keep them warm in winter. “Each child should have the freedom to choose what he or she wants to wear,” Jillian Roberts, a professor at the University of Victoria in Canada, told Global News.
But Woodchurch isn’t the first school to take such steps. In May, a UK primary school banned expensive pencil cases, according to Daily Mail. In 2017, the US state of New Mexico even passed a law saying that it is illegal (违法的) to single out or humiliate (羞辱) a child who can’t pay for his or her lunch at school.

Time flies when you play on your smartphone. But when you do the real business of work and study, one hour feels like a year. 1
It is because of something small and hard to see—dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical that makes people feel good. Our brains create it when we eat delicious food, after we exercise or when we feel cheered. 2 For example, checking your phone for a message leads to a 400% increase (增加) in dopamine.
3 This uncertainty, or “the magic of maybe”, makes the dopamine system active. But studying usually doesn’t provide such uncertainty. 4 When we read their comments, our brains are creating dopamine. To get more dopamine, we will continue checking our phones.
Can we change that? It’s said that apps can become less fun if we turn the screen colors to black and white. 5 You could also use what you’ve learned to make a difference to the real world. This may make knowledge much more interesting to learn.
A.But we usually don’t feel this when studying.
B.We get excited wondering if we have comments from our friends.
C.Why are we so interested in smartphones but easily bored with studying?
D.As for studying, you could check your progress weekly and then encourage yourself in it.
E.Compared (比较) with studying, playing on smartphones causes our brains to create more dopamine.
F.When looking through Weibo or Douyin, we don’t know what we’ll see next, or what comments we will get.

Singapore is a small island country known for its strict rules. People who visit are often surprised to see many signs telling them what they must not do. But these rules also mean that Singapore is a very clean and safe place.
Here are some of Singapore’s most famous rules.
Don’t litter
Singapore tries hard to keep the country clean. Everyone must throw their litter in a bin, not on the ground. If someone litters, they might have to pay a fine of up to S$1,000!
Don’t take durians on public transport
Another interesting rule in Singapore is about a fruit called durian. Durians have a very strong smell, and many people really don’t like them. Also, the smell can stay for a long time even when the durian is gone. Because of this, people must not take durians on buses or trains.
Don’t chew gum
In Singapore, people can’t buy or sell chewing gum. This is because chewing gum is very sticky and messy when people throw it away. To stop this problem, in 1992, Singapore decided to make a new law that said people mustn’t chew gum.
Cross the road safely
If you visit Singapore, be careful where you cross the road. Look for a pedestrian crossing—a safe place to cross. If there is one near (within 50 meters), you must use it. You can’t cross the road in any other place. You can get a S$50 fine if you do.
All in all, Singapore’s rules make it a clean and safe place. When everyone follows the rules, it makes the country a better place for everyone. Maybe Singapore can be a good example for other places around the world.
Don’t litter.

My Journey of Overcoming Math Fear
When I entered Grade Seven, Math was my worst subject. I was afraid of difficult problems and often got low scores in exams. Every time I saw Math homework, I felt stressed and wanted to give up. My teacher noticed my trouble and told me: “Perseverance beats everything.”
With her encouragement, I made a plan. I spent 30 minutes every evening practicing basic exercises. When I met hard problems, I asked my teacher or classmates for help instead of avoiding them. I also took notes of mistake types to review regularly.
After three months, things changed. I got 85 points in the mid-term exam—my first high score in Math! Now I no longer fear Math. This experience taught me that no difficulty is insurmountable if you keep trying. It also made me more confident in facing challenges.
6.What was the writer’s worst subject in Grade Seven?
7.Who encouraged the writer to keep learning Math?
8.How long did the writer practice Math daily?
9.What did the writer do when meeting hard Math problems?

8.How long did the writer practice Math daily?

Second, we should listen to our teachers in class and show them our respect. I like this rule too.Third,we must finish our homework at weekends. As students, studying is our duty, so it's also a good rule. But there is a school rule I don't like---we can't take mobile phones to school.

C.What students should wear under the ban.
D.How many schools have made similar bans.
