For over twenty years, fried chicken had been my absolute favourite food. I would have it at least three times a week, whether it was from a fast-food joint, a local diner, or even homemade. I planned my outings around places that served delicious fried chicken. There were times when I tried to cut back on it, especially when I started to gain some weight, but I always ended up giving in to it within a few days.
This year, a series of events changed my relationship with fried chicken forever. I began experiencing frequent stomachaches and indigestion (消化不良). Doctors couldn’t directly link these problems to fried chicken, but I noticed that every time I ate it, my discomfort worsened. Additionally, I started to realize that the once-mouthwatering smell and taste now left a heavy, greasy (油腻的) feeling in my mouth that I couldn’t ignore. One evening, after finishing a large bucket of fried chicken, I felt so sick that I couldn’t sleep well all night. That was the turning point. I decided that enough was enough.
Why was it so hard to let go before? Is there really something addictive in fried chicken? While there’s no official” fried chicken addiction” listed in medical books, experts point out factors that could contribute to its attraction. Dr. Johnson from a nutrition research centre mentions two key reasons: the high-fat content and the combination of spices. The high-fat content makes the brain release “happy chemicals” (endorphins), making us feel good, while the unique spices excite our taste buds, making us want more.
Now, I’m on Day 35 of my “fried-chicken-free” journey. The first week was tough. I had strong desires and even felt a bit down at times. But as the days passed, I started to feel better. My stomach problems became less frequent, and I even noticed that I had more energy. I’m really proud of myself for breaking this long-standing habit. If I can overcome my love for fried chicken, I believe I can overcome any other challenging habit in my life.

D. The author successfully reduced the intake of fried chicken several times.
25. What caused the author to give up fried chicken?
A. A doctor’s strict order.
B. A friend’s advice on a healthier diet.
C. A newfound dislike for the smell of chicken.
D. Health problems and an unpleasant feeling after eating.
26. What makes fried chicken appealing?
A. Its low price and availability. B. Its cultural popularity and advertising.
C. Its fat content and spice mix. D. Its cooking methods and appearance.

Dr. Jane Goodall: A Lifetime of Discovery and Compassion
Dr. Jane Goodall, the renowned primatologist (灵长类动物学家) and conservationist whose groundbreaking work with chimpanzees (黑猩猩) transformed our understanding of the animal kingdom, passed away on 1 October 2025 at the age of 91. The Jane Goodall Institute confirmed the news, stating she died of natural causes while on her ongoing lecture tour in the United States.
Jane was born in London in 1934 and her love for animals began in childhood. Despite being told “you can’t go to Africa. You’re a girl” her mother encouraged her, saying, “if you really want to, there’s nothing you can’t do.” This support fueled Jane’s dream of working with animals in Africa.
Jane’s approach was revolutionary. She gave the chimpanzees names like David Greybeard instead of numbers that they were previously called, and observed them with patience and empathy. For months, she made little progress but persisted. Her breakthrough came when she witnessed chimpanzees not only using tools, but also making them. This finding, which proved tool-making was not a unique human trait, forced the scientific community to reconsider its definition of humanity.
In the 1980s, alarmed by habitat destruction and declining chimpanzee populations, Jane transitioned from scientist to global activist. She founded the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 and later created the Roots & Shoots program in 1991, empowering young people worldwide to engage in environmental and humanitarian projects.
Even into her 90s, Dr. Goodall travels up to 300 days a year to spread hope and urge people to recognize that “every individual matters and has a role to play”. Her legacy is not just one of scientific discovery, but about compassion, perseverance, and the belief that one person can make a difference.
28. What was one of Dr. Goodall’s most important scientific discoveries?
A. Chimpanzees are the smartest animals in the world.
B. Chimpanzees are capable of making and using tools.
C. Chimpanzees can communicate by using human language.
D. Chimpanzees are strictly vegetarian (素食) animals.
29. What does the underlined word “revolutionary” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Traditional and widely accepted.
B. Slow and patient.
C. Extremely new and life-changing.
D. Controversial (有争议的) and unpopular.
30. Which adjectives best describe Dr. Jane Goodall’s character?
A. Generous and responsible. B. Patient and outgoing.
C. Honest and respectable. D. Caring and determined.
31. Where would you most likely find this passage?
A. In a novel. B. In a letter.
C. In a blog. D. In a newspaper.

D
For many people, breakfast — often called the most important meal of the day — is also the day’s least-exciting meal. Foods at breakfast are typically simple, quick, and easy to prepare and eat. And when people find a breakfast option they like, they generally stick with it, day after day, scientists have found.
When researchers evaluated the daily eating habits in thousands of U. S. And French study subjects, they saw that people repeatedly ate the same thing for breakfast and were happy to do so. By comparison, when those people sat down to have lunch or dinner, they expected greater variety and wanted a more pleasurable experience from their meals.
Researchers analyzed data in which a group of l, 275 American volunteers and a group of 2, 624 French volunteers reported what they ate for different meals to find patterns in meal experiences. They discovered that in both groups, 68 % of the participants ate the same breakfast at least twice in one week, and French people did so even more often than Americans did. By comparison, just 9 % of the people repeated a dinner they had already eaten and this repetition was higher for the American participants than for the French participants. The researchers then proposed that psychological (心理的) factors could also map onto circadian rhythms (昼夜节律) to further push people toward certain meal choice. Early in the day, when energy levels are higher, people tend to make practical choice. This makes it more likely that they’d be guided by practicality over pleasure when eating breakfast and would therefore be satisfied with a meal choice that they don’t have to think about too much. And it would be more possible for them to find one breakfast they like and then eat the same thing over and over again, according to the study.
But as the day progresses, and a person’s energy increased and decreased, the importance of practical goals reduces. Pleasure-sacking becomes more important, and a person would then be more likely to seek variety in tastes and texture.
However, even though culture, biology, and psychology make it seem natural to seek practical goals for breakfast, by consciously introducing variation into weekday breakfasts, breakfast can become much more enjoyable, which can help set a more positive tone for the rest of the day.
32. What did the researchers find in their study?
A. People have realized the benefits of eating breakfast.
B. People think it hard to find their favorite breakfast.
C. People usually spend a lot of time on cooking.
D. People tend to repeat their breakfast option.
33. Which method did the researchers most likely use to collect data?
A. Making surveys. B. Performing experiments.
C. Working with local restaurants. D. Observing participants’ daily diets.
34. What did the researchers conclude from people’s circadian rhythms?
A. Eating regularly contributes to good health.
B. People’s attitudes towards breakfast vary throughout the day.
C. People’s mood is the decisive factor in choosing their breakfast.
D. Energy changes throughout the day greatly affect people’s food choices.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. The Significance of Breakfast in Our Daily Life
B. Breakfast Habits: Why We Repeat
C. Differences in Meal Choices between Americans and French
D. The Influence of Circadian Rhythms on Our Eating Patterns
【答案】32. D 33. A 34. D 35. B

【导语】本文是一篇说明文,属于“人与自我”主题语境。文章介绍了一项关于早餐选择与心情的研究。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“And when people find a breakfast option they like, they generally stick with it, day after day, scientists have found.(科学家发现,当人们找到自己喜欢的早餐选择时,他们通常会日复一日地坚持下去)”可知,人们倾向于重复自己的早餐选择。故选D。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Researchers analyzed data in which a group of l, 275 American volunteers and a group of 2, 624 French volunteers reported what they ate for different meals to find patterns in meal experiences.(研究人员分析了一组由1275名美国志愿者和2624名法国志愿者组成的数据,这些数据报告了他们在不同的膳食中吃了什么,以发现饮食体验的模式)”可推知,研究者通过让参与者主动汇报饮食情况收集数据,属于问卷调查。故选A。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“The researchers then proposed that psychological (心理的) factors could also map onto circadian rhythms (昼夜节律) to further push people toward certain meal choice. Early in the day, when energy levels are higher, people tend to make practical choice.(研究人员随后提出,心理因素也可以映射到昼夜节律,从而进一步推动人们做出特定的饮食选择。在一天的早些时候,当能量水平较高时,人们倾向于做出实用的选择)”和第四段中“But as the day progresses, and a person’s energy increased and decreased, the importance of practical goals reduces.(但随着时间的推移,一个人的精力增加和减少,实用目标的重要性降低了)”可推知,一天中能量的变化会极大地影响食物选择。

Ways to Adapt to a New Culture When Studying Abroad
While studying abroad is exciting, it can also take time to adapt to the culture you find there. ____36____
Do your research
Learning about the culture before you arrive can help you feel more prepared and less scared. Ask your university if there is a student you can connect with who can help you learn more about the culture. ____37____ Maybe try connecting with your roommate, if he/ she is a domestic student, to learn more about the norms. Read books, watch films, and talk to people who have already been there.
Be patient
If you have never traveled outside your country or region before, then things may be a little overwhelming at first. Remember that culture shock is real, and it can take some time to adjust to a new way of life. If you’re experiencing culture shock, don’t worry. Studies show that as many as one in five international students experience this when first exposed to their new study abroad experience. ____38____
Make friends with locals

The school year was coming to a close, and the air was filled with anticipation for the upcoming annual school fair. Our class had eagerly decided to host a bake sale, with each student ready to contribute their favorite recipes.
Spirits were high. Every spare moment was devoted to perfecting the art of baking, from experimenting with different flavors to mastering the art of cake decorations. Our classroom became a hub of activity, filled with the sweet scent of freshly baked goods and the sound of laughter and chatter.
The day of the fair finally arrived, and our table was beautifully decorated with a mouthwatering baked goods. There were freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, warm and crispy, alongside homemade fruit pies. The attractive scent was irresistible, and it wasn’t long before a long line of students and parents formed, their eyes gleaming with satisfaction.
However, as the morning wore on, we couldn’t help but notice that the neighboring class’s booth (摊位) was appealing to a significantly larger crowd. There was a buzz of excitement surrounding their table, and it was clear that they were onto something special.
Among our class, a sense of healthy competition began to emerge. Sarah, our natural leader, suggested we step up our game. “We need to find out what they’re doing differently and improve our booth,” she said with determination. Out of curiosity, we sent our most inquisitive member, Mark, to investigate.
Soon, Mark returned with good news. “They’ve got a ‘Taste of the World’ theme going on over there,” Mark reported. “They’re serving up a variety of international desserts, and it’s quite the hit!”
We were intrigued by the idea and asked Mark for more details. He went on to explain that the students had gone the extra mile by dressing up in traditional costumes from the countries they were representing. “It’s like a cultural feast for the senses,” he added with enthusiasm.

24. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A. Fried chicken was only a small part of the author’s diet.
B. The author had a deep and long-lasting love for fried chicken.
C. The author never worried about the health risks of eating fried chicken.
27. How does the author feel about giving up fried chicken?
A. Uncertain. B. Confused. C. Satisfied. D. Regretful.

You’re a girl,” her mother encouraged her, saying, “if you really want to, there’s nothing you can’t do.” This support fueled Jane’s dream of working with animals in Africa.
Jane’s approach was revolutionary. She gave the chimpanzees names like David Greybeard instead of numbers that they were previously called and observed them with patience and empathy.

D. Chimpanzees are strictly vegetarian (素食) animals.
29. What does the underlined word “revolutionary” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Traditional and widely accepted.
B. Slow and patient.
C Extremely new and life-changing.
D. Controversial (有争议的) and unpopular.
30 Which adjectives best describe Dr.
