During the lively Paris Olympics, while the spotlight shone on the athletes, a group of unsung heroes worked tirelessly behind the scenes — the Olympic volunteers. This year, out of 300,000 applicants, around 45,000 were chosen as volunteers, with 20 percent coming from nearly 150 countries. These volunteers wore bright green uniforms (制服) to be easily noticed in the purple venues (场馆). They offered help to viewers and media alike, making them an important part of the Olympic experience.
On my first day as a reporter, I met a technical problem with my media system account. Thankfully, Chinese volunteer Guo came to help me out. “I hope to improve my language, communication skills, and problem- solving methods through this event,” said 24-year-old Guo from Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province, who was studying wireless communication at the Paris Institute of Digital Technology. As a former professional swimmer, Guo saw this as her chance to take part in the Olympics, though in a different role. Another Chinese volunteer, Yang, faced challenges in managing her job and volunteer duties. Despite giving up her holidays, she felt great pride in contributing to the event.
One of my most memorable experiences was meeting with a French volunteer. When I needed help to find the visitor center, a young man on a scooter (小型摩托车) appeared, like a sort of “Monkey King riding a cloud”, and offered to take me there. After helping me, he expressed his admiration for the Beijing Olympics and his desire to visit China again.
Volunteers like them were seen everywhere — from bus stops to competition venues — offering directions and helping with a smile. When large crowds left the venues after the events, causing overcrowding, some volunteers sat on high chairs with loudspeakers, providing directions to go outside in both English and French with a smile. These amazing volunteers, truly show the Olympic spirit, making the event and Paris shine even brighter.
4. Why might the volunteers wear bright green uniforms?
A. To stand out in the crowd. B. To show love for athletes.
C. To fit in with the venues. D. To stand for their countries.
5. What do we know about Guo?
A. She found it hard to balance her job and volunteer work.
B. She both swam and volunteered in the Paris Olympics.
C. She wanted to improve herself through volunteer work.
D. She wasn’t as patient and helpful as the French volunteer.
6. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To doubt the organization of the Paris Olympics,
B. To praise the service of Paris Olympic volunteers.
C. To show the meaning of hosting Olympic Games.
D. To provide a detailed schedule of Olympic events.
7. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By listing the benefits of volunteer work.
B. By discussing historical Olympic events.
C. By comparing different views on Olympics.
D. By sharing personal stories and experiences.

A radio show host recently asked me what kind of parent I am. I told him I try to be a lifeguard parent. Lifeguard parents keep an eye on what’s going on with their kids, ready to help if necessary, but stay out of the way when there is no need. Lifeguard parenting is described as a form of care with three stages — open attention, focused attention and active intervention (干涉).
Open attention should be a parent’s default (默认的) state. They care about what their child is doing while staying away from them. They let the child operate independently, though their child may get into a play which includes uncertain results and possibility of physical danger. In this state, a sense of trust develops between parents and children, and parents are likely to feel amazed by what their child can do.
Focused attention kicks in when parents notice warning signs. They might communicate with their child, reminding them to think through their actions without explicitly telling them what to do. For example, the parent might say, “Do you think that branch (树枝) can support you?” instead of shouting, “Stay off that branch”.
Finally, active intervention happens when parents recognize that they must step into a situation to protect their child. One mother told me about her active intervention, which she calls the red-white-blue rule: Only intervene if you see red blood, white bone or blue bruises (瘀伤). Maybe she was joking, but the point is, kids grow up well when parents provide a safe environment and then get out of the way.
The goal is to spend most of the time in open attention. Focused attention might happen only once every few days, and active intervention should be seldom. I’d love to see “lifeguard parenting” become something we all recognize as being a happy way to raise kids. Kids can do so much more than we expect if they are given the chance.
8. What do parents do in the state of open attention?
A. They respect kids’ independence. B. They play together with kids.
C. They amaze kids with full attention. D. They protect kids from potential dangers.
9. What does the underlined word “explicitly” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Politely. B. Patiently. C. Directly. D. Confidently.
10. Why does the author mention the red-white-blue rule in paragraph 4?
A. To explain the timing of active intervention.
B To show the value of active intervention.
C. To stress the safety of active intervention.
D. To draw readers’ attention to active intervention.
11. What effect may lifeguard parenting have according to the last paragraph?
A. Kids can show potential abilities. B. Parents can live a traditional life.
C. Kids can learn from lifeguards. D. Parents can have full control over kids.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. A 11. A

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Open attention should be a parent’s default (默认的) state. They care about what their child is doing while staying away from them. They let the child operate independently, though their child may get into a play which includes uncertain results and possibility of physical danger.(开放关注应该是父母的默认状态。他们关心孩子在做的事情,同时远离他们。他们让孩子独立操作,尽管孩子可能会进入一个结果不确定、可能存在身体危险的游戏。)”可知,在开放关注的状态下,父母尊重孩子的独立性。故选A。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Focused attention kicks in when parents notice warning signs. They might communicate with their child, reminding them to think through their actions without explicitly telling them what to do.(当父母注意到警告信号时,集中注意力就开始起作用了。他们可能会与孩子交流,提醒他们仔细考虑自己的行为,而不会explicitly告诉他们该怎么做。)”可知,集中注意力阶段父母会提醒孩子仔细考虑自己的行为,但是不会明确地告诉他们该怎么做,所以explicitly意为“明确地,直接地”,与Directly意思相近。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Finally, active intervention happens when parents recognize that they must step into a situation to protect their child. One mother told me about her active intervention, which she calls the red-white-blue rule: Only intervene if you see red blood, white bone or blue bruises (瘀伤).(最后,当父母意识到他们必须介入某种情况来保护孩子时,就会发生积极干预。一位母亲告诉我她的积极干预,她称之为红白蓝规则:只有当你看到鲜血、白骨或瘀伤时才干预。)”可知,作者提到红白蓝规则是为了解释积极干预的时机。故选A。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The goal is to spend most of the time in open attention. Focused attention might happen only once every few days, and active intervention should be seldom. I’d love to see “lifeguard parenting” become something we all recognize as being a happy way to raise kids. Kids can do so much more than we expect if they are given the chance.(我们的目标是把大部分时间花在开放关注上。集中注意力可能每隔几天才发生一次,而积极干预应该很少发生。我希望看到“救生员式育儿”成为我们都认可的一种快乐的育儿方式。如果给孩子们机会,他们能做的比我们预期的要多得多。)”可知,救生员式育儿可以让孩子展示出潜在的能力。故选A。

In recent years, 3D printers have mostly been used to create small, specialized items (物品). This includes parts for automobiles, airplanes and medical devices. Many consumer products can also be 3D-printed as well, from clothes to foods. Now, an increasing number of start-up (新创办的) companies are using 3D printing to build entire homes. Since the technology is still developing, not many have yet been built. However, the top companies plan to greatly increase production in the coming years.
The start-up company Icon, based in Austin, Texas, made news in 2018 by completing the first permitted 3D-printed home in the US. At the time, it said the home had been built in just a day. Since then, the company says it has been developing new technologies in robotics, software and manufacturing materials. It designed its own 3D printer and said the robot-powered machine could create buildings up to 185 square meters. The printing process uses a cement-based mixture that Icon says is stronger and saves more money than traditional building materials.
Up to now, Icon has completed 24 3D-printed homes in the US and Mexico. Among them was a community of 3D-printed homes in a poor neighborhood in Mexico. The company has also completed a series of buildings for homeless people in Austin. And it says it plans to open America’s first housing development of 3D-printed homes this summer.
A New York company, SQ4D, also uses 3D printing technology to build homes. In February, the company showed off a 130-square-meter model home to demonstrate (证明) its printer’s abilities. SQ4D plans to sell its homes starting at $299, 000. The company has even started listing the homes on the Internet selling site Zillow. Kirk Andersen is SQ4D's director of operations. He told Reuters the 3D printer will permit buyers to easily create their own home design, room by room.
While 3D printing as a home-building method is just getting started, Andersen said others in the construction industry need to get prepared for big changes. “This is the beginning. This is just scratching the surface,” he said.
12. What can we learn about 3D printing technology from Paragraph 1?
A. It has been perfect already.
B. It enjoys the highest status (地位n.).
C. It is being used for building homes.
D. It helps produce some large and unique items.
13. What feature do 3D-printed homes have when compared with traditional building methods?
A. They’re more comfortable. B. They’re more environment-friendly.
C. They’re more complex (复杂的adj.). D. They’re less expensive.
14. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The development of smart homes. B. The importance of 3D printers.
C. 3D printing in building homes. D. Construction industry’s future.
15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Technology. B. Health. C. Education. D. Environment.

B. To show the value of active intervention.
D
