The Growth of Global Internet Users
The Internet has changed a lot in more than 30 years. It was once a small network
for academics but now plays a big role in communication, shopping, and learning.
Global Internet Adoption Over Time
The Internet is thought to have "started"in 1983,but the public could access it in
1989 when Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web.So the early 1990s began the
age of Internet use.The chart below shows the growth in the number of Internet users and
the percentage of the global population using the Internet.

Bai Ze,bom after 1995,is an art teacher from north China's Shanxi Province. He
has recently been seeking to bring back the beauty of ancient architecture through his
brightly colored paintings, which have become a hit online. The ancient architecture in
Shanxi that he paints with his brush ranges from the age-old Yingxian Wooden Pagoda to
the world-famous Tianlongshan Grottoes.
As a child,he often went with his grandfather to visit the nearby Jinci Temple, which
gradually developed his interest in ancient buildings. His passion for these buildings
continued into adulthood, when the young man decided to take fine arts as his major in
college in north China's Tianjin. Now he values over 530 nationally protected ancient
structures in Shanxi as precious treasures.
With a brush,a palette and a sketchbook,Bai decided to record these familiar ancient

still find different beauty in these tourist attractions whenever I revisit them. It's like an
adventure full of unknowns and surprises,"he said.
The young illustrator can spend up to half a day at one place working on a painting,
and while working as an illustrator on weekdays,he also searches for ancient structures
throughout the city.So far,he has painted nearly 20 works of ancient architecture and set
up a social media account so that he can share them with a wider audience."For each
update,I post pictures as well as texts introducing the ancient buildings.I hope online
users will be able to not only appreciate the illustrations but also gain some historical

Fishes seem to hover (still in water with no effort, and scientists had long
supposed that this was a type of rest. However,a new study, led by scientists at the
University of California San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, finds that
fishes use nearly twice as much energy when hovering in place compared to resting. It
challenges the long-held scientific idea.
To learn more, lead study author and Scripps marine biologist Valentina Di Santo
and her co-authors carried experiments with 13 species of fishes with swim bladders().
The team placed each fish in a special tank and recorded their oxygen use during active
hovering and completely still resting when the fishes rest on the tank bottom. While the
fishes were hovering, the researchers used high-speed cameras to record their fin (
movements, tracking how each fin moved and how frequently they beat. They also
measured each fish's body size, shape and particularly the distance between its center of
weight and center of buoyancy ()All these provided a way to accurately measure
how stable or unstable each fish was.
The results showed that despite having swim bladders that make them nearly
weightless, fishes are unstable because their center of weight and center of buoyancy
don't line up perfectly. This makes them easily lose balance, forcing them to keep
changing their fins often, which uses so much energy.
"This changes how we see hovering. It's not a form of rest at all,"said Di Santo.
"It's an energetically costly activity but one that fishes engage in anyway because it can
be very useful for them to protect nests, feed in specific locations or keep their position."
The study's findings also show a gradually developed balance in fish body shapes,
which gives fishes the outstanding flexibility, required to get through the challenges of
habitats.Besides, the study can help design better underwater robots and vehicles to
