Best-selling books handpicked by educationists and trusted by critics have returned.
The Wonderful Wisdom of Ants
Philip Bunting
Think you know ants? Think again. Good humor and surpassing facts are the name of the game here. Though seemingly simple, the more of this book you read, the more you come to realize how little you may actually know about these tiny workers. This book is full of true fun that’ll generate a newfound respect for our hardworking neighbors. Give it to kids who know next to nothing about ants-it may just convert them.
— Betsy Bird, collection development manager, Evanston Public Library
My Thoughts Have Wings
Maggie Smith, illustrated by Leanne Hatch
It can be easy to forget that little kids have big thoughts, strong emotions and unbound imaginations spinning through their brains. And that constant activity doesn't always stop when it's time for bed. Poet Maggie Smith understands this and weaves a beautiful .comforting tale designed to ease and settle busy, anxious minds. She encourages children to build a “cozy nest” for their happy thoughts, while letting their worries fly away. A lovely conversation starter for kids and caregivers.
— Tayla Burney, director, Network Programming and Production

The Wonderful Wisdom of Ants中“Give it to kids who know next to nothing about ants-it may just convert them.( 把它送给那些对蚂蚁几乎一无所知的孩子——它可能会改变他们的想法。)”、My Thoughts Have Wings中“She encourages children to build a “cozy nest” for their happy thoughts, while letting their worries fly away.( 她鼓励孩子们为他们快乐的想法建立一个“舒适的巢”,同时让他们的烦恼飞走。)”以及The Yellow Bus中“Continuing along the path of children’s classics like Virginia Lee Burton’s Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, you will have a profound understanding of the passage of time.( 继续阅读弗吉尼亚·李·伯顿的《Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel》等儿童经典作品,你会对时间的流逝有深刻的理解。)”
B
Sisyphus, a well-known king in Greek mythology, was sentenced to forever suffering in the underworld by the angry gods: he had to roll a huge rock up a hill. When he reached the top, the stone would roll back down to the bottom, and he would have to start all over, on and on, forever. Nowadays, any task combining boredom, struggle, stress, and futility (无意义) might be labeled “Sisyphean”. One could even argue that all of life is Sisyphean: we eat just to get hungry again, and shower just to get dirty again, day after day, until the end.
Absurd (荒谬的), isn’t it? Albert Camus, the philosopher and Father of Absurdism thinks so. In his book The Myth of Sisyphus, Camus selects Sisyphus as a representative of the absurd. And yet Camus concludes, “One must imagine Sisyphus happy, because the struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart.”
This may seem impossible, but this unexpected insight in Camus’ philosophy of life and happiness can help you change your perspective and see your daily struggles in a new way. Instead of feeling desperation at the futility of life, Camus tells us to consciously accept its ridiculousness as the only way to arrive at happiness.
In fact, each of us can carry out Camus’ absurdism with mindfulness in order to live a happy life. When the broad sweep of life brings you horror, just concentrate on this moment, and enjoy it. The pleasure and meaning you can find right now are real; the meaninglessness of the future is not.
On my bad days, I wake up seeing only rocks and can’t face pushing them once again up that hill. Those are the days when my old friend Camus comes in handy. Rather than feeling despairing of the absurdity of life, I dive into it, laugh at it, and start my day in a light mood. Then I gather my beloved rocks and set out for the nearest hill.
4. What punishment did Sisyphus receive?
A. He had to climb up and down a hill.
B. He had to move a stone up a hill repeatedly.
C. He was sentenced to living in the underworld.
D. He was stopped from reaching the top of a hill.
5 Why does Camus think Sisyphus is happy?
A. He has enough suffering.
B. He can keep himself engaged.
C. He is selected as a representative.
D. He can always start over his work.
6. What will you do in a traffic jam according to Camus’ philosophy?
A. Enjoy music in the car.
B. Flash headlights repeatedly.
C. Complain of the busy traffic.
D. Regret choosing the wrong route.
7. What is the best title of the text?
A. Avoiding a Sisyphean Life B. Exploring Camus’ Philosophy
C. Finding Joy in Ridiculousness D. Accepting Happiness Consciously
B 5. B 6. A 7. C
根据第一段中“Sisyphus, a well-known king in Greek mythology, was sentenced to forever suffering in the underworld by the angry gods: he had to roll a huge rock up a hill. When he reached the top, the stone would roll back down to the bottom, and he would have to start all over, on and on, forever.(西西弗斯,希腊神话中一位著名的国王,被愤怒的神灵判处永远在地狱受苦:他必须把一块巨大的石头滚上山。当他到达山顶时,石头会滚回山底,他必须一遍又一遍地重新开始,永远如此)”可知,西西弗斯受到的惩罚是反复把一块石头推上山。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“And yet Camus concludes, ‘One must imagine Sisyphus happy, because the struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart.’(然而,加缪总结道:‘人们必须想象西西弗斯是幸福的,因为向高处奋斗的过程本身就足以填满一个人的心。’)”
根据第四段中“When the broad sweep of life brings you horror, just concentrate on this moment, and enjoy it. The pleasure and meaning you can find right now are real; the meaninglessness of the future is not.(当生活的广阔带给你恐惧时,就专注于这一刻,并享受它。你现在能找到的快乐和意义是真实的;未来的无意义不是)”可知,根据加缪的哲学,要专注于这一刻,并享受现在。由此推知,当遇到交通堵塞时,应该专注于当下,并享受它,比如享受车里的音乐。故选A项。
通读全文,结合第二段中“This may seem impossible, but this unexpected insight in Camus’ philosophy of life and happiness can help you change your perspective and see your daily struggles in a new way. Instead of feeling desperation at the futility of life, Camus tells us to consciously accept its ridiculousness as the only way to arrive at happiness.(这似乎是不可能的,但加缪关于生活和幸福的哲学中的这一意外见解可以帮助你改变你的观点,并以一种新的方式看待你日常的挣扎。加缪告诉我们,不要对生活的无意义感到绝望,而是要有意识地接受它的荒谬,这是到达幸福的唯一途径)”可知,本文主要讲述了加缪的荒诞主义哲学,告诉我们在看似荒谬的生活中找到快乐的方法。由此可知,C项“Finding Joy in Ridiculousness(在荒谬中找到快乐)”是荒诞主义哲学的核心,最适合作文章标题。故选C项。

Since 2010, nearly every country has seen an increase in the number of cancer patients. The WHO reports one in six people will develop cancer in their lifetime. At least 10 million people will die from the disease every year. If the current trend continues, new cancer cases will rise by 60 percent by the year 2040. In low- and middle-income countries, they will rise by more than 80 percent.
Andre Ilbawi, WHO’s technical officer in cancer control, says more people are dying from cancer in poorer countries. Controlling the disease does not have to cost a lot. The WHO report, he explained, shows that by investing in cancer services, governments can save 7 million lives by 2030. “And that is at the cost of $2.70 per person in low-income countries and $8.15 per person in upper middle-income countries. This is feasible,” Ilbawi said.
WHO says cancer does not have to be a death sentence. Prevention works.
There have been great improvements in research on cancer prevention and treatment. These measures are successfully keeping many people alive who otherwise would have died. Preventive policies can work in powerful ways to reduce not only cancer numbers and death rates, but also the social and economic inequality in cancer cases. An example of such a policy is one that reduces workers’ contact with cancer-causing materials. Other examples are measures to control tobacco use, vaccination against cancer-causing infectious agents and testing for early stages of cancer.
In its report, WHO describes a series of measures proven to help in preventing new cancer cases. For example, it notes that tobacco-related diseases are responsible for 25 percent of cancer deaths. Deciding not to smoke, it says, can save billions of dollars and millions of lives. WHO adds that a vaccine against hepatitis B (乙肝) can prevent liver cancer. It notes another vaccine against HPV can nearly fight off cervical cancer (宫颈癌).
8. How does the author lead in the topic?
A. By citing specific data. B. By making a comparison.
C By giving a vivid example. D. By clarifying a personal viewpoint.
9. What does the underlined word “feasible” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Practicable. B. Valuable. C. incredible. D. Responsible.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards cancer prevention?
A. Unclear. B. Unconcerned. C. Hopeful. D. Critical.
11. What can be the suitable title for the text?
A. The Latest Report By The WHO.
B. Prevention Is Better Than cure.
C. Cancers Increasing But Not a Death Sentence.
D. WHO: Cancer Poses a Great Threat To Humanity.
A 9. A 10. C 11. C
根据第一段“Since 2010, nearly every country has seen an increase in the number of cancer patients. The WHO, reports one in six people will develop cancer in their lifetime. At least 10 million people will die from the disease every year. If the current trend continues, new cancer cases will rise by 60 percent by the year 2040. In low- and middle-income countries, they will rise by more than 80 percent.(自2010年以来,几乎每个国家的癌症患者数量都有所增加。据世界卫生组织报道,六分之一的人在一生中会患上癌症。每年至少有1000万人死于这种疾病。如果目前的趋势继续下去,到2040年,新的癌症病例将增加60%。在中低收入国家,这一比例将上升80%以上。)”可知,作者通过引用具体数据来引入癌症患者数量增加这个话题。故选A。
根据上文“Andre Ilbawi, WHO’s technical officer in cancer control, says more people are dying from cancer in poorer countries. Controlling the disease does not have to cost a lot. The WHO report, he explained, shows that by investing in cancer services, governments can save 7 million lives by 2030. “And that is at the cost of $2.70 per person in low-income countries and $8.15 per person in upper middle-income countries.(世界卫生组织(WHO)癌症防控技术官员安德烈・伊尔巴维表示,较贫困国家有更多人死于癌症。但防控这种疾病的成本并非高不可攀。他解释称,世卫组织的报告显示,通过投资癌症医疗服务,各国政府到2030年可挽救700万人的生命。而这一投入的成本,在低收入国家为人均2.70美元,在中高收入国家为人均8.15美元。)”可知,Ilbawi认为通过投资癌症服务来挽救生命这个措施是可行的,因此,“feasible”在此处的意思是“可行的,切实可行的”。故选A。
根据第三段“WHO says cancer does not have to be a death sentence. Prevention works.(世卫组织表示,癌症不一定是死刑。预防是有效的。)”、第四段“There have been great improvements in research on cancer prevention and treatment. These measures are successfully keeping many people alive who otherwise would have died.(癌症预防和治疗的研究取得了很大进展。这些措施成功地让许多本会死亡的人活了下来。)”和第五段“In its report, WHO describes a series of measures proven to help in preventing new cancer cases.(在其报告中,世卫组织描述了一系列经证实有助于预防新癌症病例的措施。)”
D
If you consider yourself reasonably intelligent and educated, you might assume that you understand how the world works — from everyday inventions to natural phenomena. But think about this: How does a toilet flush? Why can sunny days be colder than cloudy days? Could you give a detailed answer, or only a vague (模糊的) idea? Many people, when asked to explain, are completely at a loss. This bias is known as an “illustration of knowledge”.
The concept was first identified in 2002 by Rozenblit and Keil at Yale, the phenomenon was revealed through studies where participants rated how well they thought they could explain scientific processes before writing in-depth explanations. Initially confident, many produced only sketchy accounts and were surprised by how little they knew. The Yale researchers argued that this overconfidence arose from the ease of visualising processes — such as picturing a helicopter’s flight — which created a false sense of understanding. Later studies showed that having online resources at our fingertips may feed our overconfidence, as we mistake the wealth of knowledge on the internet for our own memories.
The illusion of knowledge does not remain restricted to scientific curiosities. It can shape our decisions and behaviour on a daily basis. In the workplace, for example, it may lead us to overstate our expertise in interviews, overlook the contributions of our colleagues and take on jobs for which we are ill-prepared.
What can people do to avoid these pitfalls (陷阱)? One simple solution is to test yourself. If you are assessing your ability to handle an unfamiliar task, don’t rely on a vague sense of what it involves. Instead, think carefully through each step, and you may discover significant gaps to address before acting. It also helps to talk with an expert, who can help you check false assumptions. Given the role of online habits, pause and try to recall a fact before searching. Feeling the discomfort of ignorance can foster a more realistic view of what you truly know.
The aim, with all of this, is to cultivate a little more humility — one of the classic “intellectual virtues” celebrated by philosophers. By recognising our illusions of knowledge and admitting the limits of our understanding, we may all sidestep some unfortunate thinking traps to enjoy wiser decision making.
12. How does the author introduce the topic?
A By making a contrast. B. By quoting an expert.
C. By providing background. D. By explaining reasons.
13. Which daily habit most likely fuels the illusion of knowledge?
A. Watching short videos for entertainment.
B. Memorizing vocabulary lists without practice.
C. Bookmarking articles instead of reading them.
D. Downloading lecture PPTs as learning materials.
14. What does paragraph 3 focus on regarding the illusion of knowledge?
A. Its roles in job-hunting markets.
B. Its consequences in everyday life.
C. Its significance in work environment.
D. Its demonstration in scientific studies.
15. What can help us cultivate the “intellectual virtues”?
A. Handling unfamiliar tasks.
B. Hiding personal ignorance.
C. Identifying knowledge gaps.
D. Challenging philosophers’ ideas.
A 13. C 14. B 15. C
根据第一段“If you consider yourself reasonably intelligent and educated, you might assume that you understand how the world works — from everyday inventions to natural phenomena. But think about this: How does a toilet flush? Why can sunny days be colder than cloudy days? Could you give a detailed answer, or only a vague idea? Many people, when asked to explain, are completely at a loss. 故选A。
根据第二段“Later studies showed that having online resources at our fingertips may feed our overconfidence, as we mistake the wealth of knowledge on the internet for our own memories.(后来的研究表明,唾手可得的网络资源可能会助长我们的过度自信,因为我们把互联网上的知识财富误认为是我们自己的记忆。)”
根据第三段“The illusion of knowledge does not remain restricted to scientific curiosities. It can shape our decisions and behaviour on a daily basis. In the workplace, for example, it may lead us to overstate our expertise in interviews, overlook the contributions of our colleagues and take on jobs for which we are ill-prepared.(知识错觉并不局限于科学好奇心。它可以每天影响我们的决策和行为。例如,在工作场所,它可能会导致我们在面试中夸大自己的专业知识,忽视同事的贡献,接受我们准备不足的工作。)”可知,第三段主要讲述了知识错觉在日常生活中的影响,包括在工作场所可能导致的决策和行为偏差。故选B。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“The aim, with all of this, is to cultivate a little more humility — one of the classic ‘intellectual virtues’ celebrated by philosophers. By recognising our illusions of knowledge and admitting the limits of our understanding, we may all sidestep some unfortunate thinking traps to enjoy wiser decision making.(所有这一切的目的都是为了培养更多的谦逊——这是哲学家们推崇的经典‘智力美德’之一。通过认识到我们的知识错觉并承认我们理解的局限性,我们都可以避开一些不幸的思维陷阱,做出更明智的决策。)”可知,识别认知错觉,即认识到自己的不足和局限,是培养“智力美德”的关键。故选C。
三、阅读七选五:本大题共5小题,共12.5分。
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The Hidden Benefits of Learning a Musical Instrument
It’s no secret that learning a musical instrument can be an enjoyable hobby. ___16___ Scientific studies have shown that engaging with music profoundly impacts our brains and overall well-being in several surprising ways.
One of the most immediate impacts is on brain structure and function. Playing an instrument is like a full-body workout for the brain. It requires the use of various brain regions at the same time: the visual cortex (皮层) for reading music, the motor cortex for coordinating finger movements, and the auditory cortex for listening to the sounds you produce. ___17___
Furthermore, the cognitive benefits are significant. Research has linked music education with improved memory, better verbal skills, and enhanced mathematical abilities. The discipline and focus required to learn and practice music can sharpen your mind. ___18___ Struggling with a difficult passage and finally mastering it teaches resilience and the value of persistent effort.
___19___ Making music serves as an outlet for self-expression, allowing players to channel feelings like joy, sadness, or excitement into their performance. Listening to the music you create can be a deeply soothing and satisfying experience, reducing stress and anxiety levels.
Finally, music is often a social activity. ___20___ It teaches teamwork, communication, and the joy of creating something beautiful together. This shared experience can build confidence and a strong sense of belonging.
So, whether it’s the piano, guitar, violin, or even the drums, picking up an instrument is a gift that keeps on giving. It’s not just about the music you make; it’s about building a stronger, healthier, and more connected you.
A. Moreover, the emotional advantages should not be overlooked.
B. Therefore, it is crucial to start learning an instrument at an early age.
C. Mastering a new piece of music provides a great sense of achievement.
D. Joining a band, or simply playing with friends connects you with others.
E. The mental activity improves the link between different parts of the brain.
F. However, the benefits go far beyond just being able to play a pleasant tune.
G. For many students, this increased focus can translate into better academic performance.

Possible Version One
Dear English Club Members,
I’m Li Hua, thrilled about the “The Voice of Our Generation” project. For the first video, I recommend focusing on “Creative Student Initiatives”, such as eco-friendly campaigns, tech clubs, or peer-led community service. These projects reflect our generation’s innovation, collaboration, and social awareness.
This theme not only highlights our proactive spirit but also inspires others to contribute positively. By showcasing real examples of students solving problems, the video would resonate deeply with peers and demonstrate the impact young voices can have. It’s engaging, authentic, and perfectly aligns with the channel’s mission.
Thank you for considering my idea!
Sincerely,
Li Hua
Possible Version Two
Dear English Club Members,
I am Li Hua, a Senior 2 student from Mingqi Middle School. I am writing to offer my suggestions for the first video of “The Voice of Our Generation”.
I propose that the first video should focus on “campus life”. It can include scenes from our daily classes, club activities, and sports events. The reason is that campus life is the most familiar and vivid part of our generation. It reflects our efforts, dreams, and the bonds we form with classmates and teachers. Through sharing campus life, students from different grades can better understand each other and feel a sense of belonging. Moreover, it can also present our school spirit to the outside world, attracting more students to explore our wonderful campus.
I sincerely hope my idea can be considered. Looking forward to seeing the wonderful first video.
Sincerely,
Li Hua

When starting my sixth-grade year, I was nervous about many things. But nothing compared to the problem that I got to the age where my voice started changing. At first, the voice getting deep excited me. But then I learned before getting deeper, it can crack (变嘶哑).
The first time it happened I was so embarrassed. Surprisingly, my friends didn’t make fun of me. In fact, they didn’t even mention it. But in my self-conscious sixth-grade mind I was certain they made fun of me behind my back. They weren’t having the same problem.
After my first voice crack experience, I was determined to make sure it wouldn’t happen again. At least not in public. So, except for strategic times I said, “cool” and “yeah”, I didn’t talk. My logic was, “If I don’t use my voice, it cannot crack.” However, I couldn’t go without talking forever. I needed a new solution.
I began clearing my throat before speaking, which actually seemed to help. Limiting how much I spoke and clearing my voice made me much less stressful. This was great but there was a larger problem. I was much more scared about having a voice crack during class. My class had many new kids I’d never spoken with. I didn’t want their first impressions of me to be based on a voice crack.
Unfortunately, one day my concern came true. It was about two months after the beginning of the term. On the day it happened everything was the same as always until I got into the classroom. I noticed that we had a substitute teacher (代课老师) and immediately started thinking about how he would take attendance. My permanent teacher never had to, since he already knew each student, I panicked. So many thoughts rushed through my mind that I couldn’t think straight. I calmed myself down by telling myself that I only had to say one word “Here”. “Easy enough, right?” I thought so until my name was called. I did my routine — cleared my throat, took a breath, and said, “Here.” The only problem was that while saying this, I had the worst voice crack in the history of voice cracks.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
The whole class turned to look at me.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“You know, the voice problem you met in class is normal,” a classmate came to me and said.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Version 1:
The whole class turned to look at me. My face burned with embarrassment as I felt each pair of eyes fixed on me. The substitute teacher’s puzzled expression only added to the awkward moment. I wished the ground would open up and swallow me whole, but all I could do was shift uncomfortably in my seat. The whispers that followed were like knives to my self-esteem. When the bell finally rang for the break, I rushed out of the classroom, feeling utterly humiliated. It seemed like the whole school now knew about my voice crack.(87 words)
“You know, the voice problem you met in class is normal,” a classmate came to me and said. His reassuring words caught me off guard. As he shared his own similar experiences, I realized I wasn’t alone in this struggle. Knowing that others were going through the same thing made me feel seen and understood. His empathy sparked a sense of team spirit and support that I hadn't anticipated. Gradually, I let go of the fear of judgment and started to embrace my voice cracks as a natural part of growing up. This newfound sense of confidence and self-acceptance transformed my interactions at school, making me feel more at ease and connected with my peers.(97 words)
Version 2:
The whole class turned to look at me. I felt my face turning red and wished the ground would open up and swallow me whole. The embarrassment was unbearable, and I couldn’t even bring myself to meet anyone’s gaze. After what felt like an eternity, the substitute teacher finally spoke up, breaking the awkward silence. He chuckled and said, “Well, that’s quite a lovely young voice!” The class laughed friendly along with him, and I managed a weak smile, wondering whether they were just trying to make me feel better. Finally, the bell rang and I walked out to have some fresh air. (94 words)
“You know, the voice problem you met in class is normal,” a classmate came to me and said. “Everyone goes through it. It happens to most of us during this stage of life.” He explained how he had also experienced voice cracks and how he had learned to embrace them as a natural part of growing up. I looked at him in surprise, grateful for his reassurance. My initial embarrassment and concern gave way to gratitude and confidence. My classmates were understanding and supportive, just as my friends had been from the beginning. With their encouragement, I gradually became more confident in using my voice, accepting the changes that came with puberty without fear or shame. (98 words)

B
Sisyphus a well-known king in Greek mythology, was sentenced to forever suffering in the underworld by the angry gods: he had to roll a huge rock up a hill.
On my bad days I wake up seeing only rocks and can’t face pushing them once again up that hill. Those are the days when my old friend Camus comes in handy. Rather than feeling despairing of the absurdity of life, I dive into it, laugh at it, and start my day in a light mood. Then I gather my beloved rocks and set out for the nearest hill.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
