In 1961, when I was a fifth-grader struggling in school, I wasn’t too concerned about my poor grades. My older brother and I lived with our mother in a not-so-nice apartment in Detroit, and most of our evenings were spent in front of the television.
Then one day, our mother changed everything. She turned the TV off. Though she worked as a cleaner and had only completed the third grade herself, she was far wiser than we boys understood at the time. While working in the homes of others, she had seen how education could shape a life. She understood then the importance of reading. So she came home one day, turned off the set, sat us down, and made an announcement: her sons were going to make something of themselves. “From now on,” she said, “each of you will read three books every week.”
We complained, of course, and told her it was too much. We didn’t even own any books at home. But she had a plan, and soon we were on our way to the public library. Feeling uncertain, I wandered the children’s section. I loved animals, so I finally chose a book about beavers (河狸) called Chip the Dam Builder. To my astonishment, I was completely fascinated (入迷的). I had been transported to another world — a place no television show had ever taken me.
Before long, I found myself looking forward to these quiet escapes. I read everything I could about animals, then moved on to plants, and finally to rocks. With each new book, I could travel anywhere through the pages, and I couldn’t wait to return to the library to continue the journey.
Today, my brother is an engineer, and I serve as the chief of pediatric neurosurgery (儿童神经外科) at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore. It is still hard to believe, at times, how far that journey has taken me — from a struggling student to a doctor who teaches and performs important surgeries all over the world. But I know it all started the night our mother turned off the television and opened up the world of books to us instead.
4. How did the narrator (叙述者) and his brother spend most evenings BEFORE his mother’s rule?
A. They did their homework. B. They watched television.
C. They went to the library. D. They played outside.
5. What was the narrator’s first reaction to his mother’s new rule?
A. He was excited and started reading immediately.
B. He thanked his mother for her wise decision.
C. He complained and said it was too difficult.
D. He was silent and did not express his opinion.
6. What can we learn about the narrator’s mother from the text?
A. She had a lot of formal education. B. She understood the value of learning from her own life experience.
C. She wanted her sons to become a doctor and an engineer. D. She did not allow her children to watch any TV.
7. What is the main idea of the story?
A. Watching TV is bad for children’s development.
B. A mother’s strict rules are necessary for success.
C. Going to the library is the best way to find good books.
D. Reading books can open up new worlds and change a person’s life.

The term “Monday blues” is well-known, and it is also supported by medical data. Studies show that on Mondays, people are more likely to suffer from anxiety, stress, and even heart attacks. Recent research shows that the effects of Monday stress are not just temporary (暂时的). Even after retirement (退休), some people still show a strong physical stress response on Mondays, meaning it can be a lifelong burden.
To study this, researchers focused on cortisol (皮质醇), a key stress hormone. The body releases cortisol to deal with short-term stress. However, long-term high cortisol levels are harmful and can increase the risk of many diseases. The study used data from over 3,500 older adults in England. People reported how anxious they felt, and researchers measured cortisol levels from their hair, which shows stress over months.
The results were clear. People who felt anxious on Mondays had about 23% higher long-term cortisol levels than those anxious on other days. Surprisingly, this was true for both workers and retirees. This means that Monday anxiety has a lasting biological effect, even after people stop working. The stress appears to be strongest on the first workday.
Why are Mondays so stressful? One reason is the difficult shift from the free weekend to the structured workweek. Another reason is the higher uncertainty that Mondays often bring. For some people this weekly stress may have built up over a lifetime, changing how their body handles stress. It may even become an automatic habit that continues after retirement.
In short, Monday stress is a real health risk, not just a bad mood. Hospitals might need to prepare for more health problems early in the week. To reduce this risk, activities like exercise, good sleep, and mindfulness (正念) may help people better manage the weekly transition. Future research should also study why some people are more resilient to Monday stress than others.
8. What is the main finding of the recent research mentioned in the text?
A. Monday stress leads directly to higher hospital visits.
B. People tend to have more heart attacks on Monday mornings.
C. The physical effect of Monday stress can last for a long time, even after retirement.
D. Exercise and good sleep are the only ways to reduce Monday stress.
9. How did the researchers measure long-term stress levels in the study?
A. By testing cortisol levels in people’s hair.
B. By asking people how they felt each day.
C. By studying hospital records on Mondays.
D. By comparing workers’ and retirees’ health.
10. According to the text, which of the following is true about Monday stress?
A. Only people who are still working suffer from it.
B Its effect is strongest on the first workday of the week.
C. It is mainly caused by difficult work tasks.
D It has no effect on the body’s stress hormones.
11. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To explain how cortisol works in the human body.
B. To discuss why future research is unnecessary.
C. To compare different reasons for Monday anxiety.
D. To give suggestions on how to deal with Monday stress.

Nowadays generative (生成的) AI tools like ChatGPT are flooding into schools, promising to transform learning. But in a recent study, researchers uncovered a hidden danger: the better these tools perform, the more they might drop students’ ability to think by themselves.
Nearly 1,000 students from grade 9 to 11 in Turkey joined the study. They were divided into three groups: one with no AI access (使用权) — the control group, one using ChatGPT, and one using GPT tutor (助教) — an improved AI tutor designed by teachers which gave guidance instead of answers and included fixes for common mistakes. For example, when you make spelling mistakes in writing, instead of giving the right ones, GPT tutor will provide some methods, from pronunciation to differences between similar-looking words. Over four weeks, students used these tools during practice periods, and then were followed by exams without AI help.
During practice periods, students using the ChatGPT scored 48% higher than those without AI. Those using the improved GPT tutor scored 127% higher. However, in exams without AI, ChatGPT users performed 17% worse than the control group. GPT tutor users, on the other hand, did just as well as students who never used AI. This shows that while AI can better short-term performance, poorly designed tools might hurt real learning.
Researchers found that students using ChatGPT often asked for direct answers instead of trying to solve problems themselves. About 31% of their messages were simple requests like, “What’s the answer?” In comparison, GPT tutor users spent more time asking for guidance or explaining their details. The safeguards in GPT tutor — like detailed guidance — helped students think critically. Without these features, ChatGPT acted like a “stick”, making students less prepared for their own homework.
Surveys also showed another fact. ChatGPT users felt confident about their exam performance, even though their scores dropped. GPT tutor users believed they learned more, even though their exam results were similar to the control group. This suggests that AI tools might create false confidence if not carefully designed.
In short, generative AI has great promise in education, but its design matters. Tools made with teacher knowledge and focused on problem-solving can help students learn. Those that value speed more than understanding might do more harm than good.
12. What does the underlined word “fixes” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Corrections B. Solutions C. Applications D. Impressions
13. Which request is a student using GPT tutor likely to make?
A. Correct the mistakes of my homework.
B. Grade my composition.
C. Guide me through this problem step by step.
D. Translate the paragraph into Chinese.
14. What do the surveys concerning AI tools present in paragraph 5?
A. A misunderstanding of the design of AI tools.
B. A mismatch between students’ confidence and actual results.
C. A close relation between confidence and scores.
D. A score difference between ChatGPT users and the control group.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards AI tools?
A. Objective B. Supportive C. Negative D. Indifferent

Dealing with Appearance Anxiety
Appearance anxiety means worrying too much about how you look, which is especially common among teenagers. ____16____ For example, spending hours checking carefully edited selfies on social media or comparing your appearance with others often leads to negative thoughts. Such constant worries not only damage self-confidence but may also lead to avoiding social situations like school events or group activities.
Fortunately, there are ways to handle these feelings.
The first step is to practice kindness toward yourself. Instead of thinking “My hair looks messy,” try saying “My hair protects me from the sun.” ____17____ Also, writing down three things your body helps you do daily (like “My arms let me hug my friends”) also builds lasting confidence.
____18____ Painting helps focus on creativity rather than looks. Also, team sports like basketball teach players to value skills over appearance, with 72% of players claiming teamwork makes them value ability over appearance. Even easy activities like walking can calm your mind by producing stress-relieving chemicals.
Turn to trusted people for help. Choose friends who avoid comments on looks and join school clubs that welcome everyone. Adults like teachers can teach helpful tricks, like using apps to record feelings or ways to stay positive. ____19____
Remember, true beauty isn’t about being perfect physically. ____20____ When we care more about being kind and brave than looking a certain way, we start seeing real beauty in who people are, not just how they appear.
A. Join in some physical activities.
B. Social comparison is the major cause.
C. Such changes improve how you view yourself.
D. It is about the special things that make you “you”.
E. They usually buy expensive clothes and have cool hairstyles.
F. Creative activities and sports offer healthy ways to shift focus.
G. Thus, they are the ones we can rely on when anxious about our appearance.

I soon realized that I wasn’t invited to the party. I got off the bus and saw my friends gather under the tree where the six of us always stood every morning before the first class bell rang.
The group seemed to close up as I walked near them. The small white envelopes they quickly put into their backpacks told me everything. I figured out that everyone at school knew Bridget’s party would be held this weekend. Bridget was one of the most popular girls in our grade, and we were very different. She had beautiful red hair and wore clothes that looked like from the pages of magazines. Being invited to her party meant an honor.
“Hi,” I said, but even that single word sounded sad.
Thankfully, the bell rang and I hurried to English class. I couldn’t focus on the short story we should read in class. Why hadn’t she invited me? Was it because my feet were too big? No, that couldn’t be it. I tried to think of any time I’d spoken to Bridget recently. A few days earlier, we’d been partners during a sixth-period project. I focused on finishing the project, and she was lost in teen magazines, and sometimes said, “You should smile more.”
Maybe she didn’t invite me because of my hair. Maybe it’s my coat. But none of these were important, and none of my clothes were suitable. I was much too tall but there wasn’t anything I could do about that. Maybe I should smile more, but I just couldn’t unless I knew the person really well.
By fifth period, the news was out. Three girls that had been invited to the party couldn’t go. Then the discussion about who might take their places began.
After school, my friend Becky found me in the bus lines. She said Bridget told her at lunch she was going to maybe invite me to her party. There was still a chance. But what did Becky mean when she’d said Bridget was maybe going to invite me? Was there a condition?
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I saw the red hair bobbing (跳动) toward the bus lines, then stopping.

For some people, this weekly stress may have built up over a lifetime, changing how their body handles stress.
B. Its effect is strongest on the first workday of the week.
C. It is mainly caused by difficult work tasks.
D. It has no effect on the body’s stress hormones.
11. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A To explain how cortisol works in the human body.
B. To discuss why future research is unnecessary.
C. To compare different reasons for Monday anxiety.
D. To give suggestions on how to deal with Monday stress.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. D

Negative D. Indifferent
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. A

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Bridget held out an invitation. “Will you come to my party?”
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
I saw the red hair bobbing (跳动) toward the bus lines, then stopping. My heart skipped a beat and I froze, not daring to move or even breathe. Bridget stood a few steps away, looking around, and when her eyes met mine, she hesitated for a second before walking over. I could feel my hands sweating, my mind racing with all the silly reasons I’d thought of earlier for not being invited. She wore a soft smile, different from her usual confident grin, which made me a little less nervous.
Bridget held out an invitation. “Will you come to my party?” I stared at the white envelope in her hand, the same one I’d seen my friends hide earlier, and felt a warm rush in my chest. I nodded quickly, a small smile finally spreading across my face. “I’d love to,” I said, my voice no longer sad. She laughed lightly and said, “I’m glad. You worked really hard on our project, and I thought you’d make the party fun. You should smile more — you look nice when you do.” I took the invitation, knowing that maybe we weren’t so different after all.
