Dear Alex,
I’m a boy who likes to cook and do housework. However, most boys prefer sports. Because of my hobbies, I have been made fun of by other boys because they think that it’s girls’ or women’s duty to do housework. This has made me feel like there is something wrong with me. What should I do?
Yours,
Andy
Hi Andy,
It’s a shame that others are treating you in this way. In fact, it is everyone’s duty to do housework, whether they are boys or girls. So in my opinion, you are not different from others and you should be confident about your interests.
My brother is just like you. He never enjoyed sports. Instead, he loved cooking and baking. Every day after school, he would rush to the kitchen and try his hand at cooking up something delicious. When he was in the kitchen, he was at his happiest. This led him to work at a restaurant part-time while he was still at school, and this was an opportunity (机会) that opened doors to meeting new people and getting new skills.
Why don’t you try and reach out to people who have the same interests? Lots of people nowadays are getting more engaged with (投身于……) cooking or helping out around the house. Why don’t you try posting some recipes (食谱) or some tips (建议) on housework on social media (媒体) sites? These can help you find a community of like-minded people.
My advice is to stick to your interests all the time. Don’t let people who don’t understand you get in your way.
Yours,
Alex

I love college and I love you for sending me here. I’m very, very happy, and so excited every moment of the time that I can hardly sleep. You can’t imagine how different it is from the John Grier Home. I never dreamed there was such a place in the world. I’m feeling sorry for everybody who isn’t a girl and the girls who can’t come here. I am sure the college you attended when you were a boy wasn’t so nice.
My room is up in a tower that used to be the ward (病房) before the new hospital was built. There are three other girls on the same floor of the tower—an older girl who wears glasses and is always asking us to be a little quieter, and two new students named Sallie and Julia. Sallie has red hair and a turned-up nose and is quite friendly; Julia comes from one of the first families in New York and hasn’t known me yet.
Sallie and Julia live in one room. The older girl and I have single rooms. Usually new students can’t get this kind of room. They are very rare, but I got one without even asking. I suppose the registrar (教务主任) didn’t think it would be right to ask a well-raised child like the older girl to share a room with a foundling (弃婴). You see, there are advantages!
The room with the name “Jerusha Abbott” on the door is mine. It is on the north-west corner with two windows and a view. After I have lived in a ward for eighteen years with twenty roommates, it is quiet and calm for me to be alone. I think I’m going to like the life here.
5.From the first paragraph, we know that the college is ________.
A.the same as the John Grier Home B.a great place for the writer to stay
C.a place where the writer wants to leave D.a wonderful place only for boys
6.Which of the following is the right order according to the story?
① I moved into a single room in the tower.
② Jerusha Abbott felt so happy and excited that she could hardly sleep.
③ I became neighbours with three other girls on my floor.
④ Jerusha Abbott lived in a ward with twenty roommates for eighteen years.
A.①④③② B.②③①④ C.④②①③ D.④①③②
7.What does the underlined word “They” in the third paragraph refer to?
A.New students. B.Single rooms. C.The registrars. D.Younger girls.
8.What can we infer (推测) from the passage?
A.The writer used to be a foundling. B.The writer has never lived in a ward.
C.The older girl comes from a poor family. D.Jerusha Abbott is one of the writer’s friends.

Recently, researchers in New Jersey discovered the Cooper’s Hawk (库珀鹰) can understand how to use human traffic rules to hunt, so that they hunt more easily and successfully. This was discovered by Vladimir Dinets, who is an animal expert, and his research was published on May 23, 2025, in Frontiers in Animal Behavior. Other studies have pointed out that birds often use human buildings and cars to help them hunt, but recognizing traffic lights is a first.
In the winter of 2021, Dinets saw a young Cooper’s Hawk standing in a tree near the traffic lights. It flew low with the cover of stopped cars, and disappeared into the front yard across the street. A moment later, it reappeared, catching a sparrow (麻雀). This hunt left a deep impression on Dinets. It seemed to know when the traffic light was red.
Through continued watching, Dinets believes it knew traffic lights from the quiet noise when the red light was on at a certain time. Also, the hawk knew that sparrows would be at a certain house because the owner put out rubbish every day. So, the hawk used the cars which lined up to get close to the sparrows without being seen, making it easier to catch them.
This is more difficult than imagined.
The Cooper’s Hawk can’t see its prey (猎物) from the tree. So it has to remember the area around it and work out its way. Also, it has to know that quiet noise has something to do with traffic lights. This behavior must come from careful planning, a great memory, and difficult thinking skills. In a word, to have this hunting skill needs a lot of cleverness.
Maybe other animals can do the same, but this Cooper’s Hawk is the first wild animal they’ve discovered. These birds fly through this area only in summer and winter. This means the Cooper’s Hawk probably learned to do this in just a few days or weeks.
Finally, Dinets also saw a Cooper’s Hawk hunting in the same manner the following winter (2022), and he believes it is the same hawk, now an adult. However, in the summer of the year after that, the sound signal from the streetlight was gone, the people living there moved away, and there were no longer any sparrows there. From then on, Dinets never saw the Cooper’s Hawk nearby again.
9.How does the writer support the idea “This is more difficult than imagined”?
A.By explaining steps. B.By giving numbers.
C.By making comparisons. D.By offering facts.
10.What do we know about the Cooper’s Hawk?
A.It used the time of day to tell when the light was red.
B.It caught its prey with the help of the house owner.
C.It may learn the hunting skill in a short period.
D.It is the first wild animal to use buildings to hunt.
11.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The hawk stopped coming because Dinets scared it away.
B.The hunting skill was no longer useful in that place.
C.The hawk might have taught other hawks the same skill.
D.Dinets believes the hawk died after the summer of 2022.
12.Which is the best title of the passage?
A.A discovery about the Cooper’s Hawk
B.Traffic lights’ role in directing hunting
C.The influence of human life on animals
D.The value of scientific research to nature
D
Once upon a time, there was a circle. It lost a small section (部分). The circle wanted to be whole, so it went around looking for its missing piece. Because it’s incomplete, it can only roll (滚动) very slowly. It admired the flowers along the way. It talked with worms. It enjoyed the sunshine. It has met many different segments, but none of them is suitable for it. So it left them by the side of the road and kept looking for the missing piece.
Then one day the circle found a piece that fit perfectly. It was so happy. Now it could be whole, with nothing missing. It incorporated the missing piece into itself and began to roll. Now that it was a perfect circle, it could roll very fast, too fast to notice flowers or talk with worms.
When it realized how different the world seemed when it rolled so quickly, it stopped, left its found piece by the side of the road and rolled slowly away.
There is a wholeness about the person who has come to terms with (接受) his imperfection, who has been brave enough to let go of his unrealistic (不切实际的) dreams and who does not feel like a failure for doing so. There is a wholeness about the man or woman who has learned that he or she is strong enough to go through a sorrow (悲痛) and survive (救赎), he or she can lose someone and still feel like a complete person.
13.The underlined word “suitable” probably means “______” here in the passage.
A.common B.proper C.scary D.dangerous
14.Why did the circle leave the piece that it had found before?
A.Because it didn’t like that piece anymore.
B.Because it wanted to find a bigger one.
C.Because it wanted to enjoy the scenery around it.
D.Because it missed the feeling of loneliness.
15.In which order did the following things take place?
a. The circle left its found piece by the side of the road.
b. The circle encountered (遇见) many different segments.
c. The circle wanted to be whole.
d. The circle incorporated the missing piece into itself.
A.c-b-a-d B.a-c-b-d C.d-c-b-a D.c-b-d-a
16.Which of the following would the writer most probably agree according to the text?
A.You have to learn to accept your limitations (缺陷).
B.One has to be whole.
C.It isn’t great to chat with worms.
D.You need to experience more things to be better.

In a corner of my father’s house, there is a big plastic box. Inside are hundreds of Beanie Babies. These soft toys belonged to my sister. 17
Beanie Babies were the Labubu of my childhood. My sister was in her early teens when she started collecting them. She spent all her pocket money on these toys. 18 Everyone in America was after Beanie Babies. Many people, including my sister, started making money from them. Some could be sold for thousands of dollars each.
But that excitement didn’t last long. After about five years, Beanie Babies weren’t worth (值) a penny. 19 Different from my sister, I only had four Beanie Babies: a turtle, a tiger, a frog, and a lizard. They were never for sale and are still with me. 20
The same things happen today with Labubu and the like. Many kids love them and hang them on their schoolbags. But these toys are traded on the market, too. A 99-yuan Labubu doll, for example, can go for 1,100 yuan at online flea markets (二手货市场).
How many Labubu, LinaBell, or other popular dolls do you have? Do you really like them, or will you put them up for sale sooner or later?
A.But before long, these cute animals became big business.
B.She still believes they will be valuable again one day.

【答案】5.B 6.C 7.B 8.A
根据第一段“I love college…I’m very, very happy…You can’t imagine how different it is from the John Grier Home.”可知,作者非常热爱大学生活,甚至高兴得睡不着觉,这对她来说是一个很好的地方。故选B。
6.细节理解题。根据“After I have lived in a ward for eighteen years”可知,作者过去在病房住了18年,这是故事背景;根据“I love college…I’m very, very happy” 可知,作者来到大学后感到非常快乐和兴奋;根据“My room is up in a tower”以及“The older girl and I have single rooms”可知,作者随后描述了自己住进了塔楼的单人房;根据“There are three other girls on the same floor”可知,她因此与同楼层的其他女孩成为了邻居。故正确顺序为④-②-①-③。故选C。
7.词句猜测题。根据“The older girl and I have single rooms. Usually new students can’t get this kind of room. They are very rare, but I got one without even asking.”可知,通常新生无法申请到这种房间(指单人房),它们非常稀有。因此“They”指代的是上文提到的“Single rooms”。故选B。
8.推理判断题。根据“I suppose the registrar (教务主任) didn’t think it would be right to ask a well-raised child like the older girl to share a room with a foundling (弃婴).”可知,作者认为教务主任是为了避免让家教好的女孩和弃婴同住才给她分配了单间,此处“foundling”指代作者自己;且根据“The room with the name ‘Jerusha Abbott’ on the door is mine.”可知,此处确认作者就是Jerusha Abbott。故可推断作者曾经是一名弃婴。故选A。

9.推理判断题。根据“The Cooper’s Hawk can’t see its prey (猎物) from the tree. So it has to remember the area around it and work out its way. Also, it has to know that quiet noise has something to do with traffic lights.”可知,作者通过列举“库珀鹰无法从树上看到猎物,需要记住环境、关联嗡嗡声与交通灯”等事实,来支撑“这比想象中更难”的观点。故选D。
10.细节理解题。根据“This means the Cooper’s Hawk probably learned to do this in just a few days or weeks.”可知,库珀鹰可能在短时间内学会了这种捕猎技巧。故选C。
11.推理判断题。根据“However, in the summer of the year after that, the sound signal from the streetlight was gone, the people living there moved away, and there were no longer any sparrows there. From then on, Dinets never saw the Cooper’s Hawk nearby again.”
A“A discovery about the Cooper’s Hawk”(关于库珀鹰的一项发现)准确概括了文章核心。故选A。

A.Because it didn’t like that piece anymore.
B.Because it wanted to find a bigger one.
C.Because it wanted to enjoy the scenery around it.

根据“It has met many different segments, but none of them is suitable for it.”可知,此处是说“圆遇到许多碎片但但没有一个适合它”,且前文强调它在寻找“looking for its missing piece”,因此“suitable”需体现“匹配/适合”的含义。故选B。
14.细节理解题。根据“Now that it was a perfect circle, it could roll very fast, too fast to notice flowers or talk with worms.”可知,这个圆放弃碎片是因滚动过快导致无法欣赏花草、无法与虫交谈,对应C项“享受沿途风景”。故选C。
15.细节理解题。根据“so it went around looking for its missing piece.”可知,圆想要变得完整;根据“It has met many different segments”可知,它遇到了许多不同的部分;根据“Then one day the circle found a piece that fit perfectly.”可知,接着它找到了完美契合的一块并合并进去;根据“When it realized how different the world seemed when it rolled so quickly, it stopped, left its found piece by the side of the road and rolled slowly away.”可知,最后它发现快速滚动错过美好,把找到的那块留在路边又慢慢滚动离开,因此正确顺序是c-b-d-a,故选D。
16.推理判断题。根据“There is a wholeness about the person who has come to terms with (接受) his imperfection, who has been brave enough to let go of his unrealistic (不切实际的) dreams and who does not feel like a failure for doing so.”可知,末段的核心观点:接纳不完美、放弃不切实际的幻想才是真正的“完整”。选项A“接受自身缺陷”直接对应主题。故选A。

【答案】
Last month, I joined the school English speech competition. I practiced hard for weeks, but an accident hit me on stage—I suddenly forgot my lines. I felt so nervous that I just stood there, my hands shaking.
Luckily, my teacher and classmates clapped to encourage me. I took a deep breath to calm down, tried my best to recall the words and finally finished the speech.
This experience made me learn that courage is more important than perfection. Now I’m not afraid of speaking in public anymore. It’s this unexpected thing that helps me grow a lot.

第一节 阅读下面的材料,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Dear Alex,
I’m a boy who likes to cook and do housework.

C
