“Who needs that many tips?” Michael asked.
“We do.” Ethan answered.
“Who made you our coach again?” Michael asked.
“Remember ‘rock, paper, scissors’?” Cody said. “Ethan won.”
Ethan went on. “OK, as I said, only two weeks to get ourselves in running shape.” Then, Ethan took out three heavy books and gave them each.
Michael raised his book. “Let me guess. You want us to read this too?”
“No.” Ethan placed a book on his own head. “Here’s our first exercise. Proper posture (姿势) is important.”

After they ate them, Ethan asked, “Are you ready for push-ups?”
Cody watched a couple of guys from their school run past. “We’re trying out for cross-country. Don’t you think we should, uh, run?” he asked.

Michael begged. “Please, let’s just get going.”

Sometimes, you meet people who seem to have everything. They are calm and happy, and never look away from problems. Psychologists (心理学家) say these people are “self-actualized (自我实现的)”.
Psychologist Abraham Maslow used the word when he described his pyramid (金字塔) of needs in 1943. He said, “What a man can be, he must be. This need we may call self-actualization.” Abraham Maslow believes that human needs are grouped into different levels in a pyramid. Food, water, and air come first, followed by safety, love, and esteem (尊重). Self-actualization is at the top.
Psychologist Carl Rogers agrees with Abraham’s pyramid, saying self-actualization takes place when you act like who you want to be. He thinks “self-actualized” people are open to experiences, trust their own feelings and are always looking for new challenges.
Nearly 60 years later, Phil Olley sees self-actualization as rare yet possible. “Very few people experience self-actualization,” says Phil Olley. “It’s about living a life in your own way. It could be the definition (定义) of success, but of course, that will be different for different people.”
It seems far from us, right? In fact, self-actualization isn’t so far off as we think. Modern psychologists think that self-actualization is not about being perfect; it is about accepting ourselves and trying to grow better. Just like gardening, you don’t need the most beautiful flowers. You just need to know which one you like and how you can make it bloom (开花).
9.According to Abraham Maslow’s pyramid, which shows the need for self-actualization?
A.Tom has no friends in his new school. He wants someone to talk to.
B.Stephen is very thirsty after running. He wants to drink water.
C.Anna feels scared in the forest. She wants to find a safe place to rest.
D.Maria practices singing every day because she dreams of being a great singer.
10.What does the underlined word “rare” probably mean?
A.Not risky. B.Not common. C.Very easy. D.Very important.
11.According to Phil Olley, what is TRUE about self-actualization?
A.It is only possible for famous people.
B.It means being perfect and never making mistakes.
C.It means living your life the way you want, not in others’ ways.
D.It needs to follow the path (道路) successful people took before.
12.How does the writer explain self-actualization?
A.By showing what psychologists say about it.
B.By saying only rich people can be self-actualized.
C.By giving scientific studies with numbers and data (数据).
D.By telling a story about a famous self-actualized person.

Ne Zha’s story is well-known, but the film Ne Zha 2 filmed it in a new and exciting way.
In the Chinese myth, Ne Zha’s father, Li Jing, punishes him after he causes trouble. However, in the movie, Ne Zha’s parents show him understanding and acceptance (接受).
“Every work reflects the creator’s life experiences,” says the director Jiaozi. One of the reasons for this reinterpretation (重新诠释) of Ne Zha 2 is the huge support Jiaozi has received from his parents during his challenging creative journey.
From a young age, Jiaozi dreamed of becoming a comic (漫画) artist. Though he chose to study medicine in college because of practical considerations, after graduation, he worked at an advertising company while learning animation (动画) and creating animated works in his free time.
However, part-time creation wasn’t enough for him. With his parents’ support, he gave up his job and did his best to make animations at home.
Not long after that, his father died. The only income (收入) in the family came from his mother’s monthly retirement pension (退休金) of just over RMB 1,000. For three years, Jiaozi lived on his mother’s pension while focusing on his work.
Hard work pays off. In 2009, he created the animated short See Through, which received over 10 million views online and won many awards. This short film made him the director of the Ne Zha series by an animation company in the end.
“I got success because of my parents’ support and understanding, so I wanted to put my true feelings and reflections into my work,” says Jiaozi. Ne Zha 2 shows the importance of family love and care.
13.Why did Jiaozi study medicine in college?
A.Because he loved medicine very much. B.Because of practical considerations.
C.Because his parents forced him to do so. D.Because he wanted to work in a hospital.
14.What can we infer from the fact that Jiaozi lived on his mother’s pension for three years?
A.Jiaozi’s family was very rich.
B.Jiaozi gave up creating animations.
C.Jiaozi faced great financial (经济上的) difficulties.
D.Jiaozi’s mother didn’t support his dream.
15.What does the phrase “hard work pays off” mean in the passage?
A.Hard work brings no results. B.Hard work leads to success.

When Joseph handed Ms. Taylor his homework, he couldn’t have imagined what writing a short story would bring him.
Joseph, who was shy, had few close friends. In his art class, students usually discussed modern painters and skills. He kept quiet. No one except Karen seemed to notice him. 17 Every time he had a chance to invite her, he’d start by talking about his own painting. He knew his work was not as good as Karen’s. She was a born artist. But he wasn’t sure where else to begin. He never got to the invitation before the bell rang.
But things suddenly changed when Joseph received an A+ on his story. It was about a boy trying to ask a friend to an art opening. He was surprised. 18 Ms. Taylor’s comments (评价) made him think he had a special talent. Ms. Taylor encouraged him to enter a national writing competition. 19 He was worried that he would lose his new pride in himself if he didn’t win. But Ms. Taylor believed that taking risks was part of knowing who you are and what you can do. 20 Although he only won the fourth place, he was still proud of himself—of his writing and of his courage to enter the competition. He felt so good that he invited Karen to the art show, and she said yes.
A.Joseph finally agreed to have a try.
B.He didn’t realize he was good at it.

Chen Sheng, a young man from Meitan, Guizhou Province, feels that he really wants to help older people. Raised by his grandparents, he has always wanted to make the lives of the elderly better. After graduating in 2017 with a healthcare degree, he finished eight months of training at a local hospital and then started working at a nursing home.
At first, his work was harder than he thought. He woke up early every day at 6 a.m. to help with morning tasks and gave close care to those who could not get out of bed. His day often lasted until 11 p.m. Although he sometimes thought about stopping, the friendly smiles and trust from the people living there made him want to keep doing his work.
Chen Sheng uses his medical knowledge carefully. He gives regular health checkups, offers advice on what to eat and how to live, and helps the older people get healthier. Grandpa Li said, “When I came here, I was very weak and could only lie in bed. After two months of Chen Sheng’s help, I could walk again. Life here is good—daily services and medical care are just like at home.”
Besides physical help, Chen Sheng listens patiently when the elderly feel sad or worried. Grandma Sun likes to talk with him every day and often shares important stories. She feels happy and comforted because of the time and care he gives her. Her family is thankful for the care and attention Chen Sheng always gives her.

C.Joseph was quite sure of himself and decided to have a try.
D.So Joseph wanted to invite Karen to see a painting show.
E.At the beginning, Joseph didn’t want to enter the competition.

根据“Peter became a sales supervisor, but David stayed in the...position”可知,此处存在转折关系,彼得得到了晋升,而大卫的职位没有变化,还是和以前一样。故选A。
根据“he asked his boss why his friend’s work was noticed and his wasn’t”可知,大卫和彼得同时入职、同样努力,却只有彼得晋升,所以他觉得这种情况是不公平的。故选C。
根据“David thought it was unfair, so he asked his boss why his friend’s work was noticed and his wasn’t. In order to show David the...”
根据后文“Since David didn’t know, he went to the market again”可知,此处是大卫第一次从市场回来,老板才会向他提问。故选C。
根据“When David returned, the boss asked, ‘How much per kilogram?’ Since David didn’t know, he went to the market...”
根据后文“He saw that he had a lot to...from his friend”可知,大卫听了彼得的话后,明白了自己和彼得的不同,也就是意识到了差距。故选A。
根据“Hearing this, David realized the difference between him and Peter. He saw that he had a lot to...from his friend.”
because因为;so所以;if如果;while然而。根据“Successful people pay more attention to what is happening around them. They think ahead”和“most people only see today”可知,此处是对比成功人士和大多数人的不同,应用while表示转折对比。故选D。

Our school recently held a flea market I prepared 31 (careful) for it, but the event didn’t go as I had hoped. However, I learned a lot from this 32 (forget) experience.
“Don’t miss out! Ancient-style bookmarks on sale!” I stood in front of my stall, shouting 33 the top of my voice. However, most classmates only looked at my stall for a few seconds before heading to 34 (other). I 36 (try) lowering the price, but still no one wanted to buy them. 37 (feel) sad, I started walking around. I met one of my good friends and poured out my worries to him. He said, “Everyone struggles the first time! Last time, no one even looked at the old things I brought—everyone was grabbing snacks instead!” His words struck me. I had chosen products based only on my own tastes, 38 thinking about what my classmates really wanted. It was like studying the wrong materials before a test—no doubt to fail!
From this experience, I learned that when doing business, it’s important 39 (consider) your customers’ preferences. Even though I didn’t sell many bookmarks, I gained something more 40 (value) than pocket money—the ability to observe and reflect.

根据“Looking at my bookmarks…so why didn’t anyone stop to look at…?” 故填them。
根据“…sad, I started walking around.”
根据“based only on my own tastes,…thinking about what my classmates really wanted”可知,此处表示没有考虑同学们真正想要的是什么。 故填without。
根据“it’s important…your customers’ preferences”可知,此处是固定句型It’s+adj.+to do sth.,意为“做某事是……的”,it为形式主语,真正的主语是动词不定式。consider意为“考虑”。故填to consider。
根据“I gained something more…than pocket money”可知,此处空处修饰不定代词something。

With more people needing help, many young workers like Chen Sheng—especially those born after 2000—have joined nursing homes and work hard to make life better for older people.

Beep! Beep! Beep! Cody woke up. The alarm? It was Saturday! Then he remembered. It was their first day of training. Cody hurried to meet his friends at the park. He sat next to Michael, whose eyes were closed.
Ethan handed each of them a manual “Our first day of cross-country season is in two weeks. Make sure to read your running manual before that.”
Cody stared at the manual in his hands. “1001 Running Tips?”
After walking around with books balanced on their heads, Cody said, “I think I’m warmed up. How about going for a run now?”
“Do you have enough energy?” Ethan asked. “Let’s have a little snack.”
After they ate them, Ethan asked, “Are you ready for push-ups?”
Cody watched a couple of guys from their school run past. “We’re trying out for cross-country. Don’t you think we should, uh, run?” he asked.
Ethan shook his head. “We have to think about our running form. For example, over striding (步幅过大) could cause much pain.”
“I don’t even know what that means,” Cody said.
Ethan smiled and pointed to the manual. “Check out number 12 of 1001 Training Tips.”
Michael begged. “Please, let’s just get going.”
“We still need sunscreen and to drink some water,” Ethan said.
When they’d all put on sunscreen and drunk some water, Cody said, “You’ve thought of everything, Ethan.”
“Yep. Let’s go,” Michael said, running in place.
“I’m not sure we’re ready,” said Ethan.
“We won’t know until we try,” Michael said.
“Ethan takes the lead,” said Cody.
“Good idea.” Ethan said.
Cody continued, “But I’ll decide when to start.”
Michael smiled widely. “Ready, set…”

D
C.Hard work is a waste of time. D.Hard work makes people tired.
16.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The story of Ne Zha in Chinese myth.
B.Jiaozi’s creative journey and the inspiration for Ne Zha 2.
C.The making process of animated short See Through.
D.The importance of family love in animation creation.

When Joseph handed Ms. Taylor his homework, he couldn’t have imagined what writing a short story would bring him.

No one except Karen seemed to notice him. 17 Every time he had a chance to invite her, he’d start by talking about his own painting. He knew his work was not as good as Karen’s.

At first, his work was harder than he thought. He woke up early every day at 6 a.m. to help with morning tasks and gave close care to those who could not get out of bed.
