The Lion King musical, a beast of a show captivating US audiences since 1997, has been staged all around the world. Central to its success was Julie Taymor, the theatre, film and opera director and designer whose unique vision helped the musical spring into life on stage — proving that theatrical versions of Disney movies could not only be hugely profitable, but could do so while being artistically innovative in their own right.
But when Disney initially approached her, Taymor hadn’t actually seen the Lion King. “I thought, well, why not, let’s go look at the movie,” she recalls. “And I was really taken.” The challenge of adapting an epic, wide-screen story excited her: how, she recalls wondering, would you put hundreds of African grassland animals on stage?
The answer was by embracing a distinctly theatrical approach: masks and puppetry (木偶).”I went through every animal: okay, we’ve got a giraffe. I’ll put the puppet neck on top of the head of the dancer, but you’re going to see the dancer’s face…” remembers Taymor. Her designs allowed the audience to see the mechanics of how each character is made. “You can see Simba’s emotion on the actor’s face, while a mask on top of his head reminds you that this is, in fact, a lion. There is no attempt to hide the human being behind the masks or inside the puppet,” she says, a technique she called the “double event”.
“I wanted to do what theatre does best,” recalls Taymor. “Film hides the strings: we know it’s fake, but we’re pretending that it’s really there. Whereas in the theatre, we will enjoy seeing a little puppet of a boat, and a big ocean of silk... The audience is not played down to — they’re brought into the game.”
The how was a hit — and a new kind of musical was born.
4 What does Taymor believe theatre does best?
A Hiding its technical strings.
B. Pretending everything is real.
C. Competing with film visually.
D. Inviting the audience into the game.
5. How did Taymor solve the stage challenge?
A. By using advanced digital effects.
B. By hiding the actors completely.
C. By employing masks and puppetry.
D. By reducing the number of animals.
6. What does the “double event” technique do?
A. Hides the human actor entirely.
B. Shows both the character and the actor.
C. Uses only realistic animal costumes.
D. Focuses solely on the puppet’s movement.
7. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Techniques of film making.
B. The success of Disney movies.
C. The history of musical theatre.
D. A director’s creative stage adaptation.

Emotional eating is the tendency to eat in times of stress, anxiety, anger, or sadness. Here are strategies to conquer it.
Name that Mood. The first step in overcoming emotional eating is to get a clearer understanding of when it happens. When keeping your diet journal, make a note of your mood each time you eat. This will allow you to identify episodes of emotional eating. Figuring out how often you eat when in bad moods, and which foods will give you insight into your patterns and help you know when to use the following strategies.
Ride the Storm Out. Negative emotions ebb and flow like the tide. Sometimes it feels very bad and other times it pulls back and is barely noticeable, which may all occur over a matter of minutes or hours. Knowing that a bad feeling will die down is important because learning to deal with the bad feeling without eating involves developing the ability to tolerate it. This means to just feel the emotion in its entirety without intervening it. Let high tide wash over you.
Don’t Empower It. By eating during a negative emotion, you are giving food a new power beyond just meeting your nutrition needs. Food becomes a way to cope, making your desire for it intensify. You begin to believe that you need food to get through bad feelings.
Cope with It Healthily. The key is to find ways to cope with negative feelings that do not cause more problems. Eating causes more problems, and so does getting lost in TV for hours at a time. Exercise and talking with a supportive friend are good examples of healthy coping. Avoid coping strategies with potential harm. There is no sense in feeling better in the moment if it costs you tomorrow.
Conquer the Hard Times. Life is constant chaos. The secret to weight loss success is being able to keep a healthy lifestyle even in the midst of chaos. If you gain weight every time life gets stressful, your weight will always go up and down. Challenge yourself to maintain a healthy lifestyle when pressured. You will be confident that you can do this no matter what difficulties come your way.
8. What is the first step to control emotional eating?
A. Keeping a diet journal.
B. Riding out the emotion.
C. Doing regular exercise.
D. Avoiding all snacks.
9. What does “Ride the Storm Out” mainly suggest?
A. Ignoring negative feelings.
B. Eating to feel better quickly.
C. Waiting for bad feelings to fade.
D. Seeking immediate support.
10. Why should you avoid eating when emotional?
A. It makes food less nutritious.
B. It always leads to weight gain.
C. It gives food the power to control your emotions.
D. It may lead to more health and lifestyle problems.
11. What is a key to long-term weight loss success?
A. Avoiding all sources of stress in daily life.
B. Sticking to healthy habits even under pressure.
C. Setting and achieving short-term goals regularly.
D. Following a strict diet plan during difficult times.

People flock to cities for obvious reasons, all very understandable: more job opportunities; more cultural diversity; larger communities. Yet, there is a contradiction, living in a crowded, concrete-walled, green-poor environment takes something away from our very essence, our primitive need to be close to nature.
In China, the country that has one of the highest population density in the world but also vast stretches of green forests, an ancient tradition tries to balance out the crush from urban living. It’s known as forest bathing, the practice of spending prolonged periods of time with trees in order to gain from their many health benefits. In a book hitting shelves this month, Forest Bathing, Dr. Qing Li, the world’s foremost expert in forest medicine, also introduces this healing practice. featuring over 100 photographs of forests around the world, this kind of book might be dismissed as yet more pseudoscience (伪科学) babble, but Li has data to support his claims, collected in a long list of peer-reviewed articles at the end of the book. These articles reveal that individuals experience a substantial reduction of stress hormones, an improvement in sleep and a boost of the immune system when practicing forest bathing.
Forest bathing doesn’t require vast spaces to be effective. Smith, a scientist who works on the mechanism behind forest bathing, stresses that walks in parks, house plants, essential oils from trees, all offer a degree of benefits. Simple acts like increasing the amount of green in a room or taking a bath with natural oils capture the essence of forest bathing. Anyone, with some degree of effort, can find a way to connect with nature, in a city or not.
Scientific results apart, the concept of forest bathing shouldn’t be so surprising. Who hasn’t felt a deep emotional sense of well-being when walking along a forest trail, the sun filtering through the leaves to create spots of light and shadows on the ground? Stepping into a forest, or just into a small woodland, is like pushing a life reset button, reestablishing a connection with our deepest needs, away from the artificial sounds and smells of urban life.
12. What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A. Urbanization is a global trend.
B. Cities satisfy social needs but conflict with natural needs.
C. Cultural diversity cannot coexist with natural environments.
D. Economic opportunities are the only drivers of urban migration.
13. What does Dr. Qing Li’s book provide?
A. Data from peer-reviewed articles.
B. Only landscape photographs.
C. Personal opinions without proof.
D. Guidelines for city planning.
14. According to Smith, what is implied about practicing forest bathing in cities?
A. It is only feasible with large urban parks.
B. It requires complete abandonment of modern conveniences.
C. It has no significant impact without prolonged forest immersion.
D. Its core benefits can be accessed through simple adaptable actions.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Benefits of Forest Bathing.
B. The Challenges of Urbanization.
C. Scientific Research on Nature Therapy.
D. Balancing City Life with the Need for Nature.

Winter was the worst time of year if you didn’t have a home to go to. Tragically, I found myself in that terrible situation, by no fault of my own. A string of bad luck had caused it. Losing my job after twelve years of loyal service, then my landlord throwing me out because I had no money to pay the rent. Feeling embarrassed about the situation I faced, I kept it a secret from my parents, who lived miles away.
Maybe I should have asked for help, but something in the back of my mind stopped me every time I picked up a phone, hoping everything would work out in the end.
If only that were true.
In December, as happy families went shopping for Christmas, I would watch them from a shop entrance with only a thin blanket to keep me warm. On over one occasion, I would cry under the blanket so no one could see me. I was so ashamed. How could things have got so bad?
A few days later, the most wonderful thing happened. While the snow fell heavily and my blanket was wet through, a man approached me with a kind smile, and he said, “It’s freezing, fella. I can’t have you staying out here tonight, especially on the Christmas holidays, as if anything happened to you, I couldn’t live with myself.”
I looked up at him and a tear came to my eye. “Why would you help me?” I replied.
The man gently placed a hand on my shoulder, and then said, “It’d be nice to have someone with me again after losing my Betty last year. And there was me thinking I was going to spend Christmas on my own.” He laughed.
There was something about him I trusted, so I took his hand. At that moment a warmth was felt from deep down inside, and I believed in miracles again.

I followed the man to his small, warmly lit house. The fire crackled in the fireplace, casting soft light over the tidy room. He handed me dry clothes, a cup of hot cocoa and a plate of warm cookies. He told me stories about Betty, his beloved wife who loved Christmas deeply. Together we decorated a small Christmas tree, hanging colorful lights and little ornaments. For the first time in months, I felt safe and cared for, no longer cold or lonely. The blanket of sadness that had wrapped me for weeks slowly melted away.
That Christmas Eve changed something within me. I regained hope and courage to stand up again. With his encouragement, I started to look for jobs and soon found one. I later called my parents, telling them the truth, and they gave me full support. I never forgot the man’s kindness. As I got back on my feet, I began to help homeless people in winter, just as he had helped me. That Christmas was not just a holiday, but a new start of my life, teaching me that warmth and kindness can always light up the darkest days.
