"The table is the most powerful place for connection to take place,"says Tim Jones, founder
of Longer Tables.By hosting donation-based meals for diverse groups, the nonprofit aims to
relieve loneliness.
Tens of millions in the U.S.are struggling with loneliness-but the size of the crisis has not
discouraged Longer Tables.Since its establishment,a total of more than 8,000 guests have
attended over a hundred events in five states.Last July, the organization hosted a free meal for
about 3,400 people when it hosted the Mile Long Table.
Jones had been planning this Mile Long Table project for nine years and finally, with proper
funding and partners,it became a reality at the Auraria Campus in Denver. The project aimed to
connect individuals of all backgrounds."Sitting down and breaking bread with human beings who
may not look like us or have the same ideas-that's what this table is about,"Jones says. While
not required, participants were encouraged to sit apart from the people they knew. There was no
talk of work or job titles.Rather, prompt (cards had encouraged deeper conversations
around ambitions and values, which were shared despite wide differences in backgrounds.
Starting at 12:30 p.m.,the Mile Long Table hosted a range of activities.Displaced Auraria
residents shared their stories and desires for healing, while dancers and communal paint projects
entertained guests. The event wrapped up at 1:30 p.m..Normally,individual tickets required a
minimum donation of $5.28.However,Jones notes,"You are welcome to just show up as well.
Unhoused people, people walking through campus-there is a seat for you."
He concludes,"If we want to be a great city and we want to start dealing with the crisis,we
believe there's no more powerful place than the Mile Long Table.I'm excited about our city being
a leader and showing the rest of the country what it looks like to come together."
14.Why was Longer Tables founded?
A.To relieve hunger.
B.To raise donation.
C.To connect people.
D.To help the homeless.
15.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about regarding the Mile Long Table?
A.Its far-reaching effects.
B.Its purpose and core idea.
C.Its detailed arrangements.
D.Its historical background.
16.What does the underlined sentence highlight about the event?
A.Its inclusiveness.
B.Its practicality.
C.Its significance.
D.Its popularity.

Not all sports fans can see, hear,or experience games in exactly the same way.For people
who are blind or have low vision(),following fast-paced plays can be difficult even with
play-by-play audio broadcasting. An announcer can offer general information, but the details are
often lost in translation.
That's quickly changing thanks to clever new technology called OneCourt. It is a tablet that
features a raised map of the court or field. The surface will vibrate in set patterns to
communicate the action in real-time-so for instance, you can feel where the ball is as it moves
around the field.Catches, kicks, throws, passes, goals, touchdowns and home runs will be sent to
the user through different vibration patterns.
The device dates back to 2021 when a college student named Ethan Willow noticed a man
with low vision at a soccer game following the action using a handheld model of the field. His
sighted friend guided his hands along the board to match the plays, allowing him to keep up with
the action.Ethan then got to work on a similar device based on tactile feedback.
While tactile feedback has been in use on smartphones and video game controllers for some
time-think a gamepad when an enemy lands a blow-OneCourt marks one of the first instances
of the technology being used to communicate sports action to blind fans.Tactile feedback may
also be useful in helping people with low vision navigate physical spaces:A belt, for example,
might vibrate to warn the wearer of an oncoming object.
Currently the device has been tested with basketball, baseball and American football, and its
producer plans to add other sports in the near future, starting with hockey and soccer. The home
version is a little further away, but trials in stadiums are already underway.
17.What is OneCourt's key feature according to paragraph 2?
A.Sense-based.B.Sound-enhancing.C.Hand-held.
D.Sight-improving.
18.What inspired Ethan's invention?
A.His friend's guidance.
B.His love for soccer.
C.His suffering from low vision.
D.His observation at a game.
19.Why does the author mention"gamepad"in paragraph 4?
A.To criticize video games.
B.To explain tactile feedback.
C.To show the popularity of games.
D.To highlight the role of technology
20.What aspect of OneCourt does the last paragraph focus on?
A.The global promotion.
B.The user feedback.
C.The technical challenges.
D.The development path.

buildings could be saved. Finally,a document was signed, and the work began in 1960.

temples and destroy cultural relics that were an important part of Egypt's cultural heritage.
C.It is not possible to protect everything from our past as we move towards the future.Finding

government wanted to build a new dam across the Nile in order to control floods, produce
electricity, and supply water to more farmers in the area.
E.After listening to the scientists who had studied the problem and citizens who lived near the

Your self-esteem()is how you feel about yourself and is of great importance.26
It also influences how you view and react to challenges and failures. There are certainly some
ways to build your self-esteem.
Practicing self-acceptance is a good beginning.27 By doing so,you are building a
positive self-image,which can lead to increased confidence. While it may take time and effort,
practicing self-acceptance is a great step towards developing a healthy and fulfilling relationship
with yourself.
In the digital age, many accounts use social media to promote body positivity, mental health
awareness and self-care to uplift their audience. It will be a wise decision to follow the accounts
that inspire you and contribute to your self-value.28
While media is a significant part of your life, your self-esteem should not be defined by likes,
comments,or comparisons.29 By reducing your time on these platforms, you can
redirect your energy towards more productive pursuits, such as hobbies, exercise and time with
loved ones. This,in turn, will help you safeguard your mental health and cultivate a more positive
and fulfilling life.
30 This journey is deeply personal and highly rewarding. It leads us not just to higher
self-esteem,but to a more resilient and satisfying way of living.
A.Without proper practice,it may gradually weaken.
B.At the same time, social media can be of great help.
C.Meanwhile, avoid those that make you feel bad about yourself.
D.It involves recognizing and accepting your strengths and weaknesses.
E.Minimizing your social media consumption can help build self-esteem.
F.With healthy self-esteem,you are more likely to feel good about your abilities.

W:Do you think so?I love science-fiction films and they make me wonder what it would be like to live on the

M:Well,it would be hard to breathe, and there is no food to eat there.
W:You know what I mean-with the help of technology, people can live inside special space buildings, like in the

W:How are you feeling after today's hike? We've walked for so long!
M:Physically,I feel fine. The break at the tea house was just what I needed.I feel a little pain in my knees, but
they'll be fine tomorrow.I'll stretch and then put some medicated cream on them.
W:Do you have enough room in your seat to stretch out until we arrive at the guest house?
M:Yeah,I'm fine.I'm curious, though. Is this kind of tour really worth it-you know, you just wear a cap and
follow a guide with a flag?
W:Well, for many protected sites like this mountain, hiking is the best choice for experiencing those special places.
Just be sure to avoid peak times like the Spring Festival and National Day golden weeks.
M:Speaking of holidays,I have a week off next month. What would you recommend to see?
W:Fall is a great time all over the country. You've got the colored forests in Jiuzhaigou, the crystal-clear rivers in
Guilin, and the golden forests in Kanas...there are almost too many choices!Personally,my favorite place is
Changbaishan. The mountain looks like a painting then.
M:Looks like a painting? That sounds perfect.I've always wanted to see the famous Tianchi Lake with my own
eyes.

M:
As a younger man,I always considered myself pretty fit and healthy. It's true that I didn't take very good care
of myself.I ate hamburgers and chocolate most of the time!I rarely took exercise, but I was slim and didn't have
any real health problems. So,I wasn't worried. All that changed in 2022.That was the year I turned 35.I began
putting on weight.I had weighed 70 kilograms since the age of 20,but suddenly I was 10 kilos heavier!I felt
different physically, too.I felt tired and began to suffer from knee pain. Then my headache began to get more and
more serious,so Ihad to see the doctor.Shetoldme the cause was high bloodpressure.IfI didn't pay much attention
to my health,I risked developing heart problems. That really shocked me.So,I took action immediately.I joined a
gym that day and began working out at least three times a week.I also changed my diet.I still eat chocolate now.It
is hard to give up my favorite. But I've also discovered my love for salads! That has helped me improve my health.
Since then,I've lost the weight I gained and now I feel so much better. My advice for younger people would be
more exercise and more vegetables!
