If you’re thinking about leading a more active lifestyle, you’re not alone. In recent years, more and more people have started to take up sports and fitness. Whether you’re trying to get fit, build muscles, or you’re just tired of the sofa, here are some changes you can expect along the way.
You may find that working out gives you more energy at first. But prepare yourself for the day after, when you’ll have aches in your muscles for about 72 hours. However, the good news is that you’re less likely to have them again as long as you continue to regularly exercise those same muscles.
Over the next few weeks, you’ll start to feel fitter, and your endurance (耐力) will increase. So running three miles will no longer feel as difficult as it did during the first week. Once you’re six months in, all of that hard work should finally start to show. If your workouts focus on strength training, you’ll notice your muscles begin to take shape. After one year of regular exercise, your bones will be stronger and be less likely to become weak and break easily.
Research has shown that if you’re exercising regularly, you’re going to live longer than you would if you didn’t exercise. Exercise makes people feel happier and more satisfied because it lowers the risk of being anxious and depressed by reducing levels of stress. Of course, all of these benefits depend on the type and strength of your workout and how long you exercise for each week. Exercise carefully and often, and you’ll be running marathons in no time.
24. Why do a growing number of people engage in sports?
A. They are tired from life. B. Sports relax them from work.
C. They are eager to run marathons. D. They want to lead a more active lifestyle.
25. When will you feel it easier to run three miles?
A. After the first week. B. After six months.
C. After twelve months. D. After a few weeks.
26 What will come about if you exercise regularly for a year?
A. Your bones will be built up. B. You will feel more refreshed.
C. You will have your willpower improved. D. Your muscles will begin to take shape.
27. What is the finding of a research about taking exercise in the passage?
A. It can shape your muscles. B. It can increase your endurance.
C. It can reduce your stress levels. D. It can relieve your aches in bones.

Two British women have broken the record for the fastest time traveling around the world on a tandem bicycle. A tandem bicycle is one that can be ridden by two people at the same time
Cat Dixon and Raz Marsden set off on their journey on 29 June, 2019 from Oxford in England. They travelled through 25countries, including France, India, Australia, the US and Spain, and arrived back in the UK on 18 March, 2020. Their record was confirmed on 29 July.
In total, the pair travelled 18,263 miles in 263 days, 8hours and 7 minutes. They beat both the previous women’s and men’s records. The previous record of 281 days was set by UK cyclists Lloyd Edward Collier and Louis Paul Snellgrove.
In a statement, Dixon and Marsden said, “Each country was different and we had chances to meet some kind and very supportive people during the trip. The kindness of strangers was unexpected and great all over the world.”
On average, the two brave women cycled 80 —100 miles a day. They kept themselves entertained by listening to music and audiobooks. The pair, who met at a charity cycling event in 2016, faced a heatwave in Europe, storms in Asia and bushfires in Australia
Although the conditions were full of difficulty, they said, “We just got on with it and loved it all. It was important to keep laughing— and we did.”
They raised more than £40,000 for charity. Next, they say they want to cycle the length of Great Britain from Land’s End, in Cornwall, England, to John O’Groats, in Caithness, Scotland. The pair hope their record will encourage others.

When you have a problem, you want to get rid of it as quickly as possible. That’s the whole point about problems, surely? But we should look at them more closely, perhaps even with an attitude of friendliness because the solution lies hidden within. Or as the Roman emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius put it, “What stands in the way becomes the way.”
Step one is to find the courage to face reality. A lot of suffering we connect with our difficulties arises not from the problems themselves, but from the longing to persuade ourselves they re not happening. But this is a false comfort. Get over the most difficult part and face the truth, and you’ll be able to take action.
Step two is to look more closely at the problem. You think it’s clear: you are sad and want to feel better; you hate your job and want a new one; you wish your parents would treat you like a grown-up. But wait. As psychotherapist James Hollis points out problems, such as depression and anxiety, are often messages from the unconscious (潜意识). What might they be trying to tell you about what needs to change in your life? If you only try to put aside your feelings, you’ll never know.
Step three, though it may sound discouraging at first, is to realize that your problems are never going away. Hopefully, your worst ones will, but life is made of problems. We make things worse than they need to be by insisting we shouldn’t have difficulties. But a life with no difficulties at all would be one with no meaning or purpose — which would be a very big problem indeed.
32. Why is Marcus Aurelius mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce his achievements.
B. To inform us of his background.
C. To use his words to support the topic.
D. To explain his influence on the world.
33. What should we do first when facing a problem in life?
A. Face it bravely. B. Solve it quickly. C. Share it actively. D. Analyze it calmly.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards problems in life?
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Unclear. D. Indifferent.
35 What can be the best title for the text?
A. Well Begun Is Half Done. B. The Problem Is the Solution.
C. Attitude Determines Everything. D. The Beginning Is the Most Difficult Part.

When I was fourteen, my father got a new job in another city, so my family moved there. We moved over during the summer vacation, so I didn’t have to deal with school right away. Summer passed by quickly before I adapted myself to the new life in the new city.
School was coming. I was excited but anxious. I was not an adventurous person. Being shy and quiet, I read a lot and did not make friends easily. My head was filled with fears and worries. Would I make friends? Would I fit in? Would I survive in this strange new world? Anyway, there I was, attending a new school full of people I didn’t know.
I had a difficult time adapting to the new school. However, I still loved learning and reading. I even loved homework, and I was good at doing my homework. Loving books and reading helped me to get good grades. Teachers loved that about me. Other kids, though, did not. Although I always answered questions in class, I seldom talked with my classmates. I was unpopular. I felt like a total failure and nobody would like me.
Then one day, a tall boy walked over to me after an English class. He introduced himself and told me he was in the school basketball team. I knew him—he was the star player! “Hey,” he said, “You do really well in English class. And you know, my teammates and I spend much time competing and practicing. The subjects, especially English, really bother us. Do you think you could help us?” “Yes. Oh, definitely yes. I could, and I would,” I replied with surprise. We made the deal with an exchange of smiles.
Something gradually changed after that.

A They are tired from life. B. Sports relax them from work.
C. They are eager to run marathons. D. They want to lead a more active lifestyle.
25. When will you feel it easier to run three miles?
A. After the first week. B. After six months.
C. After twelve months. D. After a few weeks.
26. What will come about if you exercise regularly for a year?

Although the conditions were full of difficulty, they said, “We just got on with it and loved it all. It was important to keep laughing— and we did.”

35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Well Begun Is Half Done. B. The Problem Is the Solution.
C. Attitude Determines Everything. D. The Beginning Is the Most Difficult Part.
C 33. A 34. B 35. B

But we should look at them more closely, perhaps even with an attitude of friendliness because the solution lies hidden within. Or as the Roman emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius put it, “What stands in the way becomes the way.”(遇到问题时,你总会想尽快摆脱它。

上文“Do you know what to do during a really big earthquake? (你知道在大地震中该做什么吗)”以提问方式引入主题。C选项“Experts have looked into the matter carefully (专家们已经仔细研究了这个问题)”承接上文,既回答了“该做什么”这一疑问,又为下文中的“they (他们)”提供了明确的指代对象(专家)。下文“It may be worth your while to look over the five tips they have for us. (花时间看看他们给我们的五条建议可能是值得的)”正是基于C选项的引述而展开。该选项起到了承上启下的作用。故选C项。
【37题详解】
小标题“Protect yourself first (首先保护自己)”点明了本段的核心原则。E选项“Once an earthquake happens, try to protect yourself first (一旦发生地震,首先要努力保护自己)”紧接标题,通过创设情境重申了这一首要原则,并自然地引出了下文“If you can’t easily escape by getting out of the door or window, stay in a corner and cover your head and neck with your arms. (若无法迅速从门窗逃生,请立即躲避至墙角,并用双臂护住头部与颈部)”等具体的自我保护行动指南,使标题和内容紧密衔接。故选E项。
【38题详解】
下文“If you are at home when an earthquake happens, don’t rush out in a panic. (如果你在地震发生时在家,不要惊慌失措地冲出去)”给出了一个具体的“不要恐慌”的行动示例。B选项“Do avoid getting into a panic (务必避免陷入恐慌)”位于段首,作为本段的小标题,概括了下文具体行动背后的核心心态要求。故选B项。
【39题详解】
上文“According to some research, lots of people die from fire disaster after an earthquake (根据一些研究,很多人在地震后死于火灾)”指出地震后火灾是导致死亡的重要原因。 下文“So do remember to keep the electricity and gas off before leaving. (所以离开前切记要关闭电和煤气)”则是基于上述论证得出的结论。D选项使论证链条更完整。故选D项。
【40题详解】
上文已分别介绍了地震应对的几个关键步骤。G选项“In short, keep it in mind to always hope for the best but prepare for the worst (总之,要牢记于心:永远抱最好的希望,但做最坏的准备)”位于文末,用“In short”引出总结,升华了全文主旨。

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One day, the boy asked me if I would like to join the basketball team.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Something gradually changed after that. After knowing their obstacles to learning English, I gave each of them suggestions accordingly. By the end of the midterm exam, their scores had improved more or less. Our English teacher was amazed at their progress and praised me for offering help. From then on, more classmates turned to me for help and I even formed an English corner, which gave me great encouragement and I no longer felt like a failure. Instead, an overwhelming sense of belonging surrounded me.
One day, the boy asked me if I would like to join the basketball team. I agreed with pleasure. But as we practiced, I found it more difficult to play basketball well than I had imagined. When I wanted to give up, the boy told me that I could never make progress without stepping out of my comfort zone. He promised to help me with specific techniques, like shooting, dribbling and rebounding. With my tireless efforts, I was finally able to play a part in the team and I completely adapted myself to the new school. Now, I have the confidence to deal with any challenges and embrace the future bravely.
