It had been more than 10 years since they got together like this. The three sisters'eyes were
filled with tears, hands holding tight.Rubye was 110 years of age at the time, while Ruth was 104
and Rose was 101.These three centenarians(百岁老人)were enjoying a long-awaited reunion
made by a nonprofit charity-Wish of a Lifetime.
The charity is the passion project of Jeremy Bloom,a former Olympic skier who was impressed
by how much other countries respected their elders. When he took a trip to North China for a skiing
competition at age 15,Bloom was moved by how many passengers helped an elderly slow-walking
woman onto a bus.In that moment,a seed was planted, though it took 10 years for the seed to
germinate into Wish of a Lifetime.
In the summer of 2008,Bloom took the steps to form his charitable organization. He wanted to
adapt the concept of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which fulfills requests for ill children,to fit
folks on the opposite end of the age range.
Today,Wish of a Lifetime has a staff of 26 full-time employees and some 25,000 volunteers
nationwide, and is funded by donations and corporate sponsorship. The 3,000 wishes fulfilled so
far have all been reviewed by a member of the team.A World .War II veteran()returned to
the beaches of Normandy for the first time since D-Day;a woman wrote and performed a play based
on her life story;a former Air Force captain got the chance to meet.his heroes, the Rolling Stones.
英语试卷第3页(共8页)
Wish of a Lifetime is not Bloom's full-time job,but his full-time focus."It was my 100

lives as we can."

Following the steps of the blockbuster Ne Zha 2,a 3D animation, another Chinese animated
film has gone viral with its innovative interpretation of ancient Chinese mythologies.
Nobody has become a box office hit this summer, having grossed 776 million yuan since its
release,breaking the record for Chinese-made 2D animations.On Douban,.a film review platform,
the animation has scored an impressive 8.6,edging out Ne Zha 2 by 0.1 points
Based on the classic novel Journey to the West, the film does not focus on the original hero-
the Monkey King.Instead,it highlights the unknown yaoguais. In the film,a group of low-level
yaoguais decide to start their joumey to the west and eventually save human villagers from fierce
yaoguais. They are remembered by ordinary people as great heroes.
The film puts contemporary themes onto nameless yaoguais that the original work never
developed,finally crafting a story with modemn significance.On China's social media,movie-goers
are impressed by the animation's vivid description of moder-day work culture, the ink-and-wash-
painting style and its focus on the lowly characters rather than the big heroes.
In recent years, many Chinese cultural creations have won great popularity in China and
beyond.Black Myth:Wukong is based on the same story of the Monkey King but adopts a darker
narrative. The game sold over 10 million copies in three.days.Ne Zha 2 has soared to the highest-
grossing animated movie.in history, overtaking the likes of Disney's The Lion King and Inside Out.
Ne Zha 2's director Jiaozi believes that literary classics are the most valuable source of cultural
IPs for animated films.Still,.the classics need a modemn touch for revival ()."Today's
Chinese creators don't simply copy the past-they reinvent traditional stories through modem visual
language and innovative storytelling while honoring the core values and appeal of the original
works,”says Jinozi.
28.Why does Nobody become a hit?
A.It broke the record.
B.It modemized traditional myths.
C.It gained huge profits.
D.It highlighted the Monkey King.
29.What are the lead characters of Nobody?
A.Great heroes.B.Cruel monsters.
C.Minor yaoguais.
D.Ordinary villagers.
30.What can be learned about Chinese cultural creations from paragraph 5?
A.They rise to global success.
B.They centre on commercial interests.
C.They rely on traditional storytelling.
D.They learn from Western competitors.

The Amazon rainforest is often called the"lungs of the Earth"and credited with producing 20
percent of the world's oxygen.But that's a misleading claim.
"There are a number of reasons why you keep the Amazon in place, but oxygen just isn't any
one of them,"remarks Earth systems scientist Michael Coe.To Coe,the claim doesn't make any
sense because there isn't enough carbon dioxide in the atmosphere for trees to photosynthesize(
合作用).For carbon dioxide molecules(分子)trees pull out of the air, they push a comparable
number of oxygen molecules back out.The atmosphere contains less than half a percent of carbon
dioxide, and 21 percent of oxygen. It's impossible for the Amazon to generate that much oxygen.
Yadvinder Malhi,an ecosystem ecologist at Oxford University, estimates tropical forests are
responsible for around 34 percent of photosynthesis occurring on land.Based on its size, the
Amazon would account for about half of that, which means the Amazon generates around 17 percent
of oxygen produced on land.
The oxygen we breathe is the gift of plankton(浮游生物)in the ocean that have over billions
of years steadily accumulated oxygen'that made the atmosphere breathable. This oxygen could only
accumulate because the plankton became trapped at the botom of the ocean before they could roL
Otherwise, their breaking-up by other microbes would have used up that oxygen.
However, the 20 percent claim.has been making the rounds for decades.Malhi and Coe think
it comes from the fact that the Amazon contributes around 20 percent of the oxygen produced by
photosynthesis on land-which may have mistakenly slipped into public knowledge as"20 percent
of the oxygen in the atmosphere."
Obviously, none of this is to say that the Amazon isn't important."It pulls tons of carbon
dioxide out of the atmosphere, which cools'the planet,"notes climate scientist Carlos Nobre,"The
Amazon is also the most bio-diverse ecosystem on land and one of nature's most powerful tools for
easing climate change, playing an important role in stabilizing rainfall cycles in South America."
For its importance to the world, the Amazon might as well be a pair of "lungs".
32.What is a widespread misunderstanding of the Amazon?
A.It features rich biodiversity.
B.It eases climate change effectively.
C.It produces 20%of Earth's oxygen.
D.It breathes in oxygen like human lungs
33.Why does Michael Coe doubt the claim?
A.Oxygen is mainly from plankton.
B.CO,is too little for photosynthesis.
C.The Amazon is not large enough.
D.The Amazon generates little oxygen.
34.Why do ocean plankton contribute most to the breathable atmosphere?
A.They absorb more CO2.
B.They spread across vast ocean regions.
C.They photosynthesize faster.
D.They build up oxygen over long periods.
35.What can we infer from Carlos Nobre's words in the last paragraph?
A.He denies the claim on the Amazon.
B.He underestimates the Amazon's function.
C.He stresses the Amazon's ecological value.
D.He confirms the Amazon's role in carbon reduction.

girl to the nearest hospital,280 miles away in Anchorage.
38 Driving her SUV to the end of the airplane runway, she shone her headlights on the
runway for the plane to follow.Great idea,but it wasn't enough.More light was needed,so a
neighbor called nearly every home in the village-32 of them.Within 20 minutes,20 vehicles
arrived at the airport, mainy of the drivers still in nightwear.Following directions from the medevac
pilot, the cars lined up on one side of the runway.
The medevac made its final approach and, guided by the headlights, landed safely.39

It was just past noon when Jacob Bell decided to call it a day. He'd gained a dozen fish."Not
a bad day's work,"Bell thought to himself, drying his hands on his shirt-until a sharp scream cut
through the lake's calm,echoing from about 50 yards offshore.Bell's smile disappeared.He started
the engine of his boat and raced toward the scene, where a boy came into view, crying crazily for help.
"My goodness!"thought Bell."He's drowning!"Bell's mind raced.He leaned over the
boat's edge, grabbed the boy's wrists, and pulled him with all his strength out of the water and onto
the deck(甲板).
As he looked at the unconscious teenager lying on the deck of his boat,he thought,"The kid's
gone!"A wave of desperation washed over Bell-until his recent CPR training kicked in.Just six
months earlier,he had taken a first-aid course. His eyes fixed on the kid's pale face, and he began
pressing his chest,his movements firm and rhythmic,just as he'd memorized.Within seconds,the
kid's lips parted, and he coughed out a lot of water.
"He's back!"thought Bell,watching his face regain its color.The boy was alive.Once they
reached the shore,an ambulance-called by onlookers-was waiting. The boy was rushed to the
hospital immediately.
This incident drew great attention in the small town, and the media soon flocked to cover it.
Reporters came to take photos and named Bell a "quick-thinking savior."However,he was
uncomfortable with the praise, telling his wife,"I'm not a hero.I just.did what I needed to do."
“You are a hero,”she corrected him.“You saved someone's life.”
The "hero"label still sat awkwardly on Bell.He was relieved to slip back into his routine-
driving his truck-with the lake rescue fading into a distant memory until six weeks later.
That day,as he was driving,he spotted a cloud of smoke pouring from a buring car,and the
driver was shouting for help.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Without any hesitation,Bell pulled over and hurried to the car.
A week later, the rescued driver together with reporters came to Bell's house.
