A confident shoulder shake, a fingertips tap to the brow, and a point to the sky — hurdler (跨栏选手) Wu Yanni’s pre-race routine is as strong as she is. Some people say it is “too much,” but Wu stays true to herself. “Every athlete has their own way of getting into the zone. This routine reminds me to believe in myself,” she said.
Wu’s journey has been full of strength and courage. From winning silver at the 2023 Chengdu FISU Games to breaking an 11-year national record in the 60m hurdles at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, she keeps climbing. Her 8.01-second finish made her Asia’s best and improved her confidence. “The version of me giving everything on the track — that’s the one I love most,” she said.
The road, however, has not been easy. A wrong start at the Asian Games once affected her season. But Wu rose again. “These two years had more lows than highs, but I’m thankful for everyone who supported me,” she said. She believes the sport shapes her. “When you’re down, you see how people treat you. When you rise again, you see it clearly.”
Born in Sichuan in 1997, Wu first loved dance. But after winning a 100m race in 2009, she found her path in track and field. Hard moments, like the passing of her grandfather, only strengthened her. She went on to win national titles and compete in the Paris Olympics, though she did not reach the semifinals. “Every race is a chance to learn,” she said.
Supported by her coaches and fitness team, Wu continues to push her limits. Her goal now is to go sub-eight seconds and fight for gold at the National Games. She always runs with courage.
4. Why does Wu Yanni stick to her pre-race routine?
A. To show off her strong power.
B. To step out of her comfort zone.
C. To improve her self-confidence.
D. To make her competitors stressed.
5. How did Wu Yanni face failures?
A. She lost heart and gave up. B. She gave herself a treat.
C. She chatted with her friends. D. She kept moving forward.
6. Which words can be used to describe Wu Yanni?
A. Friendly and creative. B. Curious and brave.
C. Selfless and hard-working. D. Determined and positive.
7. Which might be the best title for the text?
A. The Journey of a Star
B. Wu Yanni’s Race to Rise
C. How to Become Successful
D. The Dancer Turned Champion

Google has used motion sensors on more than 2 billion smartphones to create an earthquake early-warning system, a new study shows. Between 2021 and 2024, Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts (AEA) system detected more than 11,000 earthquakes using smartphone sensors and sent over 1,200 alerts (警报) to Android users in 98 countries including the United States, Japan, and Turkey. It has increased the number of people who can receive earthquake alerts from 250 million in 2019 to 2.5 billion today. The researchers published their findings in Science on July 17.
AEA works by using smartphone accelerometers (加速度传感器) to find the fast-moving P-waves that happen before the stronger S-waves of an earthquake. This system can estimate (评估) the earthquake’s size and location and send warnings to people in danger zones. In the past, earthquake alert systems have been expensive and only used in certain areas. AEA helps fill this gap by using many smartphones already in use.
Generally speaking, the system performs well: 85% of people who experienced an earthquake received a warning, with 36% getting one before the shaking started. However, the researchers face some challenges, one of which is that smartphone sensors cannot measure (测量) the earthquake exactly right, especially estimating the magnitude of large quakes, such as those that hit Turkey in February 2023. The AEA greatly underestimated these shakes, which researchers said was because of problems with data collection methods, which have now been fixed.
Though AEA helps improve earthquake warning systems, Google says it is meant to help, not take over official systems. The AEA earthquake warning system is a good helper.
8. What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A. More people are getting earthquake alerts now.
B. Android smartphones perform better than others.
C. Few earthquakes have happened in recent years.
D. Early-warning system is used in all Android smartphones.
9. Which is one of the disadvantages of AEA system?
A. It always fails to find strong P-waves.
B. It often fails to work in many developing countries.
C. It usually fails to send alerts in time before shaking.
D. It sometimes fails to tell correct magnitude of large quakes.
10. How should the AEA system be used?
A. Users should download the app.
B. Users should totally rely on this system.
C. It should be used to replace official systems.
D. It should be used along with official systems.
11. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A book review. B. A travel brochure.
C. A science magazine. D. A movie comment.
D
While touring museums, Kachkine realized that the art on the walls is only a part of the works that museums have. Many pieces are stored away because they are too old or damaged, requiring time and careful restoration (修复). It was then that he thought artificial intelligence (AI) could play a key role in this process. By combining traditional knowledge with modern technology, AI is changing how the world’s artistic heritage is protected.
One major advantage of AI in restoration is its ability to study a large number of details and discover what people may not notice. For example, it can study the colors of a work, comparing them to the original paintings. This allows experts to better understand the artistic works, guiding the restoration more clearly.
AI also plays an important role in rebuilding damaged or unfinished works. For example, generative adversarial networks (GANs) can recreate lost parts of paintings using information from the rest.
In addition, AI can study future damage. With advanced technology, systems can watch changes in a work’s color or materials and warn protectors before serious problems appear. This is especially useful in works open to severe environmental conditions.
However, the use of AI in restoration also raises moral (道德的) challenges. Some experts argue that depending on AI to finish works could change the artist’s true purpose, turning restoration into a personal explanation. Furthermore, it could also widen the gap in cultural heritage protection between developing and developed areas.
Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the restoration of historical works of art. Although it raises moral questions and technical challenges, its help in protecting artworks is extremely valuable. By combining technology with traditional knowledge, AI not only protects our past, but also makes sure that future generations can enjoy and learn from these cultural treasures.
12. Why does the author mention Kachkine’s visit to museums?
A. To explain why Kachkine loves art.
B. To stress how many works are stored in museums.
C. To introduce the importance of AI in art restoration.
D. To discuss the challenges in restoring artistic works.
13. What can AI do to help restore artistic works?
A. Create a new painting. B. Prevent future damage.
C. Rebuild lost parts of a work. D. Avoid some natural disasters.
14. According to paragraph 5, what is some experts’ attitude towards AI in art restoration?
A. Doubtful. B. Satisfied. C. Uninterested. D. Supportive.
15. What does the underlined word“revolutionizing”in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Changing. B. Destroying. C. Exchanging. D. Impressing.

“You need to work hard to win the race, Jim. Why aren’t you practicing?” Jim’s mother asked.
“Mom, I’m already the fastest. Why waste time running? I’m the only one who’s going to win — no one else stands a chance!” Jim replied.
“Jim, talent alone isn’t enough without hard work. This laziness will cost you someday,” his mother warned. But Jim just laughed. He was confident that no one in his class could beat him.
David, Jim’s classmate, was also taking part in the race. Though not a natural runner, he practiced late into the night, building up strong endurance (耐力).
With only a few days left until Sports Day, Jim still hadn’t practiced. Meanwhile, David kept training day and night.

A. Changing. B. Destroying. C. Exchanging. D. Impressing.
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. A 15. A

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sports Day was fast approaching, and the school was alive with energy. All the children were busy practicing for the big race. Jim, one of the school’s fastest runners, felt sure of victory without even trying.
Finally, Sports Day arrived. The playground was filled with students cheering for their favorites. At the coach’s whistle, everyone raced toward the finish line. The race was thrilling — Jim and David quickly pulled ahead, leaving the other runners far behind. Soon, it was just the two of them, running neck and neck.

With David’s victory now certain, Jim’s mother praised him for his great effort.

【答案】
Suddenly, Jim went ahead of David. Filled with pride, Jim believed that his natural speed would win. He gave a quick look at David when students cheered him on. But soon, lacking practice became a big problem. His breath grew heavy and his legs ached terribly. Just steps from the finish line, Jim slowed rapidly. At the moment, David found the chance and passed Jim. David crossed the finish line first, and the crowd burst into cheers for their new champion.
With David’s victory now certain, Jim’s mother praised him for his great effort. “Your hard work has paid off, David.” she said warmly. Then she moved to Jim. He was sitting alone on the grass, looking deeply upset. “This is what I mean,” Mom said gently. “Talent alone isn’t enough.” Jim looked up, his eyes full of regret. He finally saw how his overconfidence made him lose the race. That day, Jim learned a lasting lesson: Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
