On October 11, over 1,600 athletes joined the 2025 Ironman World Championship Triathlon (IWCT) in Hawaii. The race has three challenging parts: a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a full 26.2-mile marathon. Though 60 athletes quit halfway, 80-year-old Natalie Grabow made it to the end, setting the record as the oldest woman ever to finish the hard race.
The Ironman World Championship is one of the hardest triathlons around the world. The heat, the winds and the uphill sections make it a huge challenge even for young professional athletes. For an 80-year-old grandmother like Grabow, finishing the race seems almost impossible — but she made it.
What makes Grabow even more impressive is her late start in swimming. She couldn’t swim at all until she was 59. It was her running friends who inspired her to try triathlons, so she made up her mind to learn swimming. She practiced hard, slowly improved her skills and took part in her first half-Ironman race in 2005.
Now Grabow has completed the full ironman 11 times. This year, as an 80-year-old, she raced the same course as everyone else. She fought through the terrible heat and uphill, never thinking about giving up. “I was going to beat it,” she told The New York Times.
It took her 16 hours, 45 minutes and 26 seconds to cross the finish line. As she finished, the announcer called out, “Really unbelievable”. Tired but pleased, Grabow said she was thankful to still race at her age. And she’s not done yet. She’s planning on running at least two half-Ironman races next year.
4. What do we know about the IWCT?
A. It includes three sports. B. It is for professional athletes.
C. It has a 26.2-mile swim. D. It is the hardest in the world.
5. What made Grabow try triathlons?
A. Her love for swimming. B. Her desire for fame.
C. Her record-setting dream. D. Her friends’inspiration.
6. Which of the following can best describe Natalie Grabow?
A. Creative. B. Determined.
C. Patient. D. Concerned.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The 2025 IWCT took place in Hawaii. B. Athletes face the challenges in triathlons.
C. Natalie Grabow trained hard for triathlons. D. An 80-year-old woman set a record in IWCT.

“The real question is not whether machines think but whether men do,” American psychologist BF Skinner once said. And as AI continues to become more popular, many people might be worried about whether people are really thinking at all anymore — and that includes students.
Oxford University Press surveyed 2,000 students aged 13 to 18 all over the UK. It found that about 80% of students in the UK already use AI for schoolwork. However, not all students are necessarily happy about their use of AI. More than 60% say they feel that AI has harmful effects on their skills and learning, with one in four saying AI makes it too easy for them to find answers without having to do much work themselves.
Many students say they’re worried that AI tools encourage copying instead of creating work by themselves, and they also worry about the correctness of the information AI offers. In fact, fewer than half of students who took part in the survey say they can tell if AI content is correct, and many say they’d like their teachers to help them understand what information they can believe in. A lot of students are also not sure when they should use AI for their schoolwork; about half say they’re worried that other students are using AI, and that teachers don’t always know this.
However, the results aren’t all bad. Many students say that AI has helped them get new skills, such as getting better at understanding problems, and thinking of new ideas. One student said AI also helps him “think faster.”
Alexandra Tomescu from Oxford University Press said the results of the survey show that students have a mature understanding of how AI affects learning, in both good ways and bad.
8. What can we learn from the survey according to paragraph 2?
A. All students are unhappy about using AI.
B. About 80% UK students use AI for schoolwork.
C. 60% think it easy to find answers with AI.
D. The survey covers 2,000 students under 18.
9. What do students hope teachers do for them?
A Tell whether AI content is correct.
B. Decide when AI should be used.
C. recommend some useful AI tools.
D. Prevent other students using AI.
10. How does AI help students according to the text?
A. Develop practical life skills.
B. Understand themselves better.
C. Improve their thinking ability.
D. Correct mistakes in homework.
11. What does the underlined word “mature” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A. Narrow. B. Clear. C. Basic. D. Simple.
D
Young children really struggle in the heat. Their small bodies cannot cool down by sweating like adults, and they depend fully on adults for relief such as cool places or drinks. A new research shows that extreme heat may cause lifelong developmental problems, which is becoming more common due to climate change.
In a study of 20,000 children, researchers from New York University found that kids in hotter areas were less likely to reach basic developmental goals than those in cooler nearby areas. Children in poor and city families were especially affected. “Early childhood is an important period of development,” says Jorge Cuartas, a researcher who led the study. “If kids experience too much stress from heat without any help, it can lead to long-lasting effects on brain and skill development.”
The team analyzed (分析) data from 3-4-year-olds across six areas. These places collect data on early childhood development in similar ways, and have detailed climate records. They found that cognitive (认知) skills like reading and math were more affected than physical or social skills.
Marshall Burke, an environmental economist at Stanford University praised the study, saying it matches another research. According to that research, that kids experience with climate extremes in early childhood has lasting influences on their health and lives.
The study does not show how heat causes these issues, but lots of research suggests heat can slow thinking and learning, increase family fights and mess up sleep. It can also close off opportunities to learn and play, an important part of kids’ growth. “Maybe children are having more difficulties attending early childhood education and care centers, or spending time outdoors because it’s too hot,” says Cuartas.
12. Why are children easily affected by extreme heat?
A. They can’t find enough cool places. B. Their parents pay little attention to them.
C. They are too poor to buy cool drinks. D. Their bodies fail to cool down by sweating.
13. Which skills are more likely to be influenced by extreme heat?
A. Physical skills. B. Cognitive skills.
C. Social skills. D. Sports skills.
14. What is Marshall Burke’s attitude towards the study?
A. Doubtful. B. Hopeful. C. Supportive. D. Curious.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. When Heat Affects Kids’ Development.
B. Climate Change Threatens Kids’ Health.
C How to Protect Kids From Extreme Heat
D. Extreme Heat Harms Kids’ Development.

I had already been a teacher for 15 years when I met my greatest teacher. She was my daughter Kelsey.
Kelsey was born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫). However, she has taught me many lessons about courage and determination, and I’m a better person because of her.
When she was four, she wanted to learn to tie her shoes just as her best friend had done. I was stumped (难住了). Because of her cerebral palsy, Kelsey has very little use of the fingers on her left hand. How could I teach her something I couldn’t do with one hand myself?
After two years of tireless practice, Kelsey finally did it. I learned about determination from her achievement, and much more. How fast she did things wasn’t important—achieving her goals within her own timetable was what mattered most.
When she was seven, she wanted to take ballet lessons. Her weak muscles, poor balance and light weight worried me—not just about her body, but about her feelings. Yet, she wouldn’t give up on the idea, so I signed her up for a ballet school. Kelsey danced with all her heart! Did she fall? Of course. Was she awkward? Very. But she never cared, throwing herself into the process, completely unaffected by what she couldn’t do.
She danced for four years. Then came the opportunity for her first stage performance. However her ballet teacher, Ms. Elena, gently suggested Kelsey join the backstage staff instead, as the stage (舞台) would be too challenging for her.
That evening at home, I saw the disappointment she tried to hide. I said nothing but hugged her tightly. Later, she sat on the floor, staring at her ballet shoes quietly. After a long silence, she lifted her head, as if she had made a decision.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next day, Kelsey knocked on Ms. Elena’s office door.

A. Tell whether AI content is correct.
B. Decide when AI should be used.
C. recommend some useful AI tools.
D. Prevent other students using AI.
10. How does AI help students according to the text?
A. Develop practical life skills.
B. Understand themselves better.
C. Improve their thinking ability.
D Correct mistakes in homework.
11. What does the underlined word “mature” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A. Narrow. B. Clear. C. Basic. D. Simple.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B

【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Many students say that AI has helped them get new skills, such as getting better at understanding problems, and thinking of new ideas. One student said AI also helps him ‘think faster.’(许多学生说,人工智能帮助他们获得了新技能,比如更好地理解问题,以及思考新的想法。一位学生说,人工智能还帮助他‘思考得更快’。)”可知,AI通过帮助学生更好地理解问题和激发新想法来提高他们的思维能力。故选C。
【11题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“Alexandra Tomescu from Oxford University Press said the results of the survey show that students have a mature understanding of how AI affects learning, in both good ways and bad. (牛津大学出版社的Alexandra Tomescu说,调查结果显示,学生对AI如何影响学习有着……的理解,包括好的方面和坏的方面。)”结合上文可知,学生们既认识到了AI带来的便利和新技能,也清楚地表达了对其鼓励抄袭、信息准确性等负面影响的担忧。这种能全面看待事物利弊的理解是深刻而清晰的。因此“mature”在此处为“清晰的,透彻的”之意,与“clear”含义相近。故选B。

C. How to Protect Kids From Extreme Heat
D. Extreme Heat Harms Kids’ Development.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. D

Dear Eric,
I’m glad to offer my advice on choosing between the Basketball Club and the Art Club.
If you enjoy teamwork and physical activity, the Basketball Club would be a great choice. It’s fantastic for building fitness and making friends through practice and matches. However, if you prefer quiet, creative expression and improving your painting skills, the Art Club could be more suitable. It allows you to develop patience and a keen eye for detail.
Think about which activity aligns better with your personality and interests. I’m sure you’ll thrive in either club!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
However, her ballet teacher, Ms.
注意:

The big night finally came. Kelsey waited for her turn, dressed in her ballet costume.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The next day, Kelsey knocked on Ms. Elena’s office door. With a calm but determined voice, she explained how much dancing meant to her and respectfully asked for a chance to perform on stage. She didn’t promise perfection, only her very best effort. Touched by her sincerity and courage, Ms. Elena agreed to let her join the group dance, placing her in a spot where her movements could be supported by other dancers.
The big night finally came. Kelsey waited for her turn, dressed in her ballet costume. When the music started, she stepped onto the stage, her movements graceful in their own honest way. She stumbled once but quickly regained her balance, her face glowing with pure joy. In that moment, she wasn’t a girl with cerebral palsy—she was a dancer, shining with the light of perseverance. The audience rose in a standing ovation, not out of pity, but in genuine admiration for her beautiful spirit.
